In a Reality TV show, or rather, any competition show that involves contestants being Eliminated from the Race or Voted Off the Island, some players may actually be eliminated from the game without being either. Sometimes, factors beyond their control caused them to be eliminated from the game. It's usually counted as being an actual elimination, sometimes taking the place of a scheduled elimination episode or changing it into a double-elimination period.

Legendary Season 2 contestant Jah Luxe injured himself while rehearsing for the House of Luxe's first performance, and because Legendary's challenges require a lot of physical exertion, it was determined that he should not be allowed to continue lest he strain the injury further, though the rest of his House remained in the competition.

This Show: The Strictly Formula and constant stream of debuters replacing the previous ones every episode got on Folder's nerves until she snapped and demanded to leave this never-ending cycle of a show. Raven:
Series 1: in the first week, Gaale suffered a knee injury during the challenge Stepping Stones on day 3 and left at the start of day 5 when said injury was aggravated on day 4. At the start of the second day of the second week, Kefra left due to illness and was replaced by Racar.
Series 3: Denat got injured during High Walk on day 5 of week three and was replaced by Maska rather than Keari, the warrior eliminated before him, for some weird reason.
Series 8: Thyran pulled out after injuring her wrist in Ring Rack and was replaced by Vilsar.
Series 9: Yenja left for reasons that were not revealed on camera. He was replaced by Tridic, who finished in third place overall.
In the spin-off Raven: The Island, Tanla quit when she refused to do an abseiling challenge due to having a fear of heights.

The Almost Valentinesly Object Show: Bean Bag had to disqualify Box of Chocolates as a potential suitor once she reveals her true colours as a demented, love-obsessed sicko and becomes too much to handle. Whether she was removed for the round or the entire gameshow is ambiguous given she wasn't put up for voting though it's likely the latter for Bean Bag's own safety.

Mickey Mouse Battle House: Hex abruptly disappears between episodes 1 and 2 with Cole taking her place due to a real-life controversy which led the crew writing her out of the show, much like the Tyce incident above. The next episode has Michael quitting, having enough of the show, in spite of being saved from the bottom two with Cole (In this case, the decision is probably so the crew doesn't let Cole's debut go to waste quickly).

The Simpsons: Duffman injures himself in one episode and the Duff brewery sponsors a reality show to find a replacement. The eventual winner is someone we'd never seen before (or since) and asked to change into his Duffman costume. While he's doing this, one of the judges spots a tattoo on his back of a rival brewery's logo. He's disqualified and Homer is named the winner. (This is possibly the latest this trope can possibly occur.)

Dancing with the Stars (US):
Several people have had to drop out due to injury or health issues.
In Season 3, Sara Evans withdrew for personal reasons (she had just filed for divorce), so it was decided that no one else would be eliminated that week. Instead, they combined that week's scores with the next week's to determine the next elimination.
In Season 8, Misty May-Treanor tore her ACL in rehearsal and had to withdraw from the competition. The same season, Jewel had to withdraw before the competition began, throwing a monkey wrench into their promotions with her and her husband Ty Murray.
Tom DeLay in Season 9.
In season 16, Dorothy Hamill was forced to drop out after dancing exacerbated a back injury to the point she risked being unable to walk or skate if she suffered further injury. Whether or not the decision to make the announcement at the last possible minute before the standard elimination would be announced was really a spur-of-the-moment decision, though, was never addressed.
Season 18 had Billy Dee Williams withdraw due to doctor's orders for a chronic back problem.
Season 21 had two multiple withdrawals. The Real Housewives' Kim Zolciak-Biermann was forced to leave when a mini-stroke prevented her from flying to California, and Tamar Braxton made it to the top 5 before leaving after developing pulmonary embolisms.
Season 28 had Ray Lewis withdraw aftering injuring his foot in rehearsals which would require surgery. Also, Christie Brinkley Cook was originally supposed to be a contestant, but her breaking her arm in rehearsals five days to the premiere resulted in her withdrawal and her daughter, Sailor, taking her place instead.
Season 29 had Jeannie Mai withdraw in week 8 after she was hospitalized with epiglottitis, an inflammatory condition that could've potentially blocked her lungs.

Canada's Worst Driver
Season 2: Colin Sheppard deliberately performed so poorly in every test that he was expelled from Driver Rehab in the fourth episode. All participants relinquish their car keys upon arrival and are returned when they graduate; Colin's keys were destroyed and his vehicle towed back to his hometown. Host Andrew Younghusband remarked "Let's hope Colin loses his license before his life."
Season 4: Donna Hicks was sent home in the fourth episode after exceptionally poor performance coupled with an angina attack. Donna was convinced that she could drive, despite all evidence to the contrary. The province of Ontario reviewed her driver's license after the show; she did not pass the review.
Season 5: Crystal Hubley-Fararo left in the fifth episode after learning that her brother-in-law had been killed in a vehicular collision. A video retrospective of the rest of the rehab subjects revealed that they consistently failed to yield, the same behaviour that got Crystal's brother-in-law killed.
Season 6: Scott Shurink was expelled in the second episode after revealing on-camera his numerous undocumented vehicular crimes: more than just excessive speeding (which ended his first test in the first episode), he drove while drunk, while suspended, and used his friend's license. Said friend immediately cancelled the vehicle insurance Scott needed to drive, while resident traffic law expert and retired OPP sergeant Cam Wooley contacted the Calgary police with this information. He was arrested for drug charges in December of 2010 then later was caught speeding in 2015.
Season 9 (Canada's Worst Driver Ever) saw three drivers and one nominator leave for non-gameplay related reasons:
Henrietta Gallant was sent home at the end of the first episode, after admitting that she pretty much gave up driving after being named the worst driver in Season 2, and didn't intend to start driving regularly again no matter how well or poorly she did in the season.
Angelina Marcantognini was sent away for mental health treatment at the end of the fourth episode, after her severe emotional problems had caused her to fail every single challenge she attempted (along with abusing alcohol and anti-depressants), and it was obvious that the stress of being on the show would only cause her to get worse.
Michael Telford's nominator Yolanda got the dubious honor of being the first nominator ever to be ejected after Michael and the judges decided that she was more of a hindrance than a help to Michael's rehabilitation. She was replaced with her husband and Michael's friend (and original nominator back in season 2) Eric.
Dale Pitton ran away from rehab, injured her hand (deliberately, in the opinion of the experts) and showed no signs of taking the lessons to heart, and was ejected at the end of episode 7. In a twist she nearly got named Canada's Worst Driver Ever anyway, but avoided it mostly because the show's judges had already decided to contact the relevant authorities and request that her driving license be revoked, in which case the "worst driver" title would be redundant.

Obsolete Battle Show: Since Square forgot and therefore lost the ability to recover people, as well as there being no recovery centers in sight, those who ended up permanently dying are disqualified from OBS.
Baseball Bat was eaten by dinosaurs (And killed before the contest could start), Question Mark presumably fell to his death, Iceberg was believed to have melted at the earth's core and H got impaled by spikes. Even when it turns out Question Mark and Iceberg are still alive, the former was dismissed as their evil clone and the latter didn't bother to climb out of the pit.
Barry gets teleported to a Blank White Void for allegedly rigging the votes (Turns out the host forgot to put him up for elimination) and nobody knows where he went since he was inside Circle all along. After Circle dies in the middle of space, the void collapses and kills Barry.
Cinnamon ceases to exist after calling Circle impatient (To which he himself admits).note This was also for personal reasons out-of-universe as Sacri used it as an excuse for her to be written out of the show entirely
Lava Lamp is the only non-fatal disqualification since she was hospitalized for her sustained injuries from episode 3note She had landed on a rock that left a nasty crack that drain all her fluid and left her in a catatonic state since then. This also inadvertently saved Oreo from elimination.

Tough as Nails: In a series where normally nobody is eliminated, to boot, as normally those who lose in the individual competition still stick around for the whole season to keep playing in the team competitions.
Tara Elverson was injured in the second episode of Season 2 and lost the individual competition, and it was revealed in the opening of the third episode that she was not medically fit to continue on and would not be returning to the series.
At the same time as Tara, it was revealed that Mikey "Eyebrows" Guerriero was gone as well. While no explanation was given for his being out on the show, on an episode of Rob Has a Podcast host Phil Keoghan later explained that he had broken a rule off screen. As Tara was from Dirty Hands and Mikey was from Savage Crew, this meant that both teams were down a member.
Later in the same season, Patrick "Freight Train" Harmon had to receive medical attention during a window-washing competition, and could not continue on the show. His teammate for the competition, Iraida, punched him out on his behalf. Although it was said later on that he had recovered to the point where he might be able to come back, ultimately COVID restrictions meant that he was not able to return in time to compete in any further team competitions. Freight Train was from Dirty Hands and thus Savage Crew had to sit out a team member in each remaining team competition of the season. He did eventually come back in the finale, just to provide moral support.

Take Two - Malachite was eliminated in place of Treasure Chest since the latter plays Gamebot Berry's unused Immunity Token at the last second. The former, however, takes this in stride and wishes his team the best of luck.

On Daisy of Love, so many people left the competition that the users of Television Without Pity speculated that many of them were dropping out just to get away from Daisy.
Flipper left the house after getting in a heated argument with the rest of the cast.
Brooklyn walked because he still had feelings for his ex-girlfriend.
London refused to continue in the competition because he didn't think that he had a real connection with Daisy. He returned five episodes later and wound up winning.
Cage pulled himself out of the game because he feared he wouldn't be able to control his anger issues.
Fox was thrown out when Daisy found out that he still had a girlfriend and was calling her from the house.

America's Next Top Model
In the middle of the second episode of season 3, the girls received an envelope eliminating Magdalena, no explanation given.
In season 5, during the makeover, Cassandra was frustrated that her hair was cut very short. Tyra was still not pleased and asked to cut her hair even shorter, to which Cassandra refused - and quit the show.
Season 9 saw Ebony decide to leave after she was chosen over Ambreal, citing Modelling wasn't for her.
Season 10 saw Kimberly walk out of judging before the first evaluation because she had trouble focusing due to the suicide of a friend.
Terra was ejected from the game in episode 3 of season 15 right after The Makeover because she treated her Expository Hairstyle Change as a Traumatic Haircut and the judges (Mr. and Ms. J) found it very unprofessional.
Ondrei quits in the early episodes of season 16 because she can't keep her focus on the competition due to her dead brothers.
Angelea was disqualified in the finals of the All-Star season for (at the time) unspecified reasons (Preston has given interviews stating that it was due to escort work she had done between previous seasons of the show, but had already disclosed to producers.)
In the US vs UK season, Louise stormed out of the panel because of judge Kelly Cutrone telling her to get her attitude in check. It's worth noting that the two fought during the photoshoot as well. Louise chose not to come back. Near the finale, Alisha did what Ebony did in season 9 when she was chosen over that season's Eboni. She quit because she doesn't want to be the Elimination Houdini.
In cycle 21, Romeo was disqualified for headbutting another contestant while drunk.

Kamen Rider Geats features a Deadly Game called the Desire Grand Prix that pits heroic Kamen Riders against evil monsters. While players are supposed to just be sent home for failing challenges, some fatalities are inevitable. But occasionally someone leaves the game some other way:
In one episode, Keiwa makes himself the bait for the monster they're fighting so that the other players can defeat it. They succeed in doing so, but Keiwa is judged too injured to continue.
During the next game, Ittetsu is an old man who comes to realize that he can't keep up in the combat that the DGP demands. Meanwhile, Keiwa gets caught up in the game as a civilian, and he's healed from his injuries and has regained his desire to fight. Under pressure to let Keiwa back in, management allows it as a substitution for an existing player, and Ittetsu gives up his place.
Then there's an odd case where a member of the staff got eliminated. Game Master Girori had started engaging in ever-more-heavy-handed Executive Meddling to try and get Ace out of the game, even to the point of suiting up and fighting Ace in battle himself. The players revolt, and not only kick his ass but they go over his head and get the DGP's producer involved, who immediately fires Girori for abuse of power and calls off the season.

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! has had a few (but to be fair, the possibility of people quitting is inherent in the title):
Danniella Westbrook walked out after 9 days, due to being unable to adapt to life in the jungle.
John Lydon was kicked off Season 3 for saying the viewers were “f*cking c*nts on the air.
Brian Harvey walked out of Season 4 due to the death of his grandmother. Natalie Appleton soon joined him, due to frustration at always being voted to do the Bushtucker Trials.
Elaine Lordan was evacuated after fainting on the first day of Season 5. Kimberly Davies left the same season due to suffering a Game-Breaking Injury.
Malcolm McLaren pulled out on Day 1, due to disliking the show’s premise, and was replaced with Katie Hopkins.
Camilla Dallerup left after a few days of the 2009 season, due to exhaustion from lack of food. Katie Price soon followed voluntarily due to the surprise being ruined by the media, and George Hamilton left because he’d come to have fun rather than win.
Nigel Havers walked off the 2010 season due to disliking the “Jungle Jail challenge.
Freddie Starr was evacuated in the 2011 series after an allergic reaction.
Brian Conley quit the 2012 series on medical grounds.
Gemma Collins and Craig Charles both left the 2014 season, the former on medical grounds, the latter due to his brother’s death.
Spencer Matthews was asked to leave due to steroid abuse, while Lady Colin Campbell left on medical grounds during the 2015 season.
Jack Maynard was removed from the 2017 season after offensive tweets of his were discovered
John Barrowman was evacuated after falling down a slope and injuring his ankle, and was declared immune from eviction that episode, but he later returned (with crutches and an ankle brace).
Richard Madeley, Olivia Attwood, Grace Dent and Jamie Lynn Spears were removed on medical grounds in 2021, 2022 and 2023 respectively.

Masterchef Australia
In Season 1, one of the chefs quit after making the top 50, due to the stress of the competition.
In Season 2, Sarah quit after making the top 24, due to feeling that her heart was no longer in the competition.
And just to make it a pattern, season 3's Paul withdrew due to "work commitments" having his spot taken in the top 24 by another contestant.
After making it to the top 14, Adam resigned his position after ending up in a pressure test, saying he felt he lacked the commitment the others in the pressure test felt towards cooking.
After making it to the top 9, Mat was eliminated after it was revealed he'd been breaking the rules by bringing a smartphone into the Masterchef kitchen.
Season 5 had Andrew "retire" due to an injury that would've hindered his abilities if it was left untreated. Another contestant (Jules) also had a hip injury, but was deemed fit to continue.

The Apprentice (US):
In season 3, Verna attempted to quit the show halfway through the second task because she was too stressed out, but Donald Trump's adviser Carolyn chased after her and persuaded her to return. Verna stayed on until the end of the task, at which point she quit anyway.
In season 6 (the Los Angeles season), Michelle quit during the third Boardroom session. She had grown tired of sleeping in a tent, she was an outcast within her team, and she said she would probably get fired that episode anyway.
In Celebrity Apprentice 1, Vincent Pastore quit the show after a massive fall-out with Piers Morgan.
Khloe Kardashian got thrown out of Celebrity Apprentice 2 when Trump found out that she had a DUI conviction, and had taken a break from her community service assignments to do the show. Dennis Rodman had also been fired the previous episode for his constant drinking, though that more directly affected his performance in the tasks.
Michael Johnson withdrew from Celebrity Apprentice 3 due to an implied family emergency.
The last civilian season gave us Anand, who- in a relatively rare occurrence for reality TV- was expelled for cheating. During the sixth task, in which he was project manager, he sent out a bunch of text messages to his friends in an attempt to sell chariot rides. Nobody responded, but his team won anyway. Trump eventually found out about it, and it hit the fan at the start of episode 9. When confronted about the texts, Anand actually lied right to Trump's face, saying that he hadn't sent any, only coming clean when Trump read some of them aloud to everyone else. His elimination still technically counts as a firing, but as it's safe to say it wouldn't have happened were it not for the texts, it counts as this as well.
Anand was actually the second Non Gameplay casualty from that task. The first came in episode 7, when it turned out that Mahsa had blabbed to the men's team about how much money the women had made, prior to the boardroom for that task. When it was brought up in the boardroom, Mahsa tried to claim that she had only said it in response to opposing team-member Clint telling her what the men had made. This led to Clint and the other guys storming back into the boardroom and calling Mahsa a liar, which was backed up by Mahsa's own team-mates. This finally caused Mahsa to go crazy, drop a Cluster F-Bomb at Trump, and then accuse the other candidates of conspiring against her. Trump said that Mahsa was either a complete idiot or totally disloyal, and sent her packing.
Celebrity Apprentice 4 had two withdrawals. The first was when Jose Canseco had to leave in the fifth episode, after discovering that his seriously ill father had just days to live. The second saw NeNe Leakes storm off the show for initially unspecified reasons; Trump called her later in the episode, at which point she basically accused him of having a hard-on for fellow contestant Star Jones, and told him to go fuck himself.
In what became the final season, Chael Sonnen was expelled for cheating as well. He cut a cord to a computer to buy his team some extra time on a task. He didn't think it was cheating, but Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had replaced Trump after he ran for President, thought otherwise. Notably, when expelling Chael, rather than saying "You’re terminated" like he did with everyone else, Arnie outright said, "You’re fired".

One stunt during the third season of Fear Factor, involved eating certain organs of a cod fish, determined by reaching into a whole fish and pulling out a numbered chip. A contestant named Nancy did this, but before she could actually start eating, she commented that her arm felt like it was burning. It was discovered that she was severely allergic to fish. The reaction was most likely caused by her scraping her arm against the fish's jaw, evident by the blood on her arm. It was deemed too risky for her to continue; the remaining female contestants did not have to worry about elimination for that round as a result (the men had gotten their turn already, with the slowest one eliminated as planned). One has to wonder how it could have played out if the meals were chosen through an entirely different method and she didn't find out until halfway through the dish, however...

Inanimate Insanity II: Marshmallow, who had grown tired of the show's toxicity, decides to run off to live with a friend and is officially eliminated after being gone for too long. Three episodes later, Microphone withdraws from the show, despite winning immunity for the challenge, after having enough of Taco's manipulations.
Inanimate Insanity Invitational: After Box suffers injuries from a hammer, tumbling down from a 60-foot cliff and spontaneous combustion, he is deemed too severely injured to continue competing. Unlike the previous season, however, this is all Played for Laughs since Box is an Inanimate Competitor. While Cabby was voted off as per normal, the reasons for so were completely unrelated to her performance in the competition but rather her tendency to emotionally manipulate her teammates using her insanely detailed yet incriminating files. Needless to say, she was eliminated in a landslide once they found out.

Animated Inanimate Battle: Pear quits out of the feeling like he's being forced to compete (More like he's too lazy to even give a damn about competing) but what really made sure he'll never come back is when he snaps at Oodle, unjustifiably calling him and his show "pointless". The normally nice host, who just wants to make the Blank State a better, happier place for his contestants, doesn't take this baseless accusation too lightly and throws Pear into the Doodleverse right then and there without his iconic "Toodles!". This turn of events also saved Pitchfork from certain elimination given how the viewers are not too kind to her attitude.

The Biggest Loser
Season 3 was the first to end with four finalists instead of the three from the first two seasons. Apparently, the producers had planned to have viewers vote which of the two lowest achieving finalists to eliminate like in subsequent seasons, but this was never announced. In the finale, it was announced that one of the finalists had withdrawn from the competition, but still showed up to reveal why. It turned out to be Heather who had become pregnant.
In Season 11, Week 17, one of the favorites to win, Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner, dropped out of the competition for "personal reasons", the first Biggest Loser contestant to actually quit, rather than throw the weigh in to get eliminated. However, there are rumors that he was encouraged to drop out, due to supposed rule breaking, though the rumors have not been proven.
Season 13 has Joe, who walked off the show the week after his brother was eliminated, simply because he was missing his family too much. Bob did not take it well.
Every season has several eliminations that tread the line between this and Heroic Sacrifice, as contestants volunteer to be voted off so people who need it more can stay. This is especially common in seasons where Parent-child teams are common. In fact, in season 11, the parents all made a pact to make sure they were all gone before any of the kids.

In Season 3, Sara Evans withdrew for personal reasons (she had just filed for divorce), so it was decided that no one else would be eliminated that week. Instead, they combined that week's scores with the next week's to determine the next elimination.

Project Runway
In season 3, Keith was ejected for having fashion books- in clear violation of the rules.
In season 4, Jack had to drop out due to illness; the Project Runway solution to a Non-Gameplay Elimination tends to be bringing another recently eliminated contestant back mid-challenge and still having elimination that day.
In season 7, Maya quit after suddenly deciding she wasn't ready for the big time. Keep in mind, she was only two challenges away from the finals, and hadn't been in the bottom 3 even once!
In season 9, Cecilia Motwani quit when she stopped enjoying the competition and felt like this wasn't the place for her. This brought Joshua Christensen back for a little bit.
Andrea actually runs away from the apartment at the end of the third episode of Season 10, possibly due to Christopher's comments during the previous day's judging. Kooan drops out the following morning, saying that the competition "just isn't fun anymore."
In Season 12, Sandro ended up being eliminated when, after he was declared safe, he got into a massive argument with some of the other designers and then stormed out of the building, threatening and then smashing a camera that tried to film him. The judges declared that he had evicted himself, and next episode he came back briefly to apologise and confirm that he was out.

The Masked Singer: Dreamy Edition has a convoluted one for the Knight aka Terra Branford. Balan, the show's organizer, was instructed to invite "Terra from Square", but was not clarified as to which franchise that entailed. As a result, he also wound up inviting another Terra, the one from Kingdom Hearts. During the second elimination ceremony, Terra stormed the stage and punched Terra Branford, knocking her mask off and rendering the ceremony null and void.

RuPaul's Drag Race
Season 4's Willam Belli has the distinction of being the first (and for the longest time only) Drag Race queen to be disqualified. Other than RuPaul saying Willam had "broken the rules", no explanation is given until the finale when it was revealed he had been meeting up with his husband for sex while he was supposed to be sequestered in his hotel room during filming. However, very few people including his fellow castmates believed this to be the truth. Willam would later go on record on his Race Chaser podcast with Season 5 contestant / All Stars Season 2 winner Alaska that meeting up with his husband was not the only rule he had broken, which included getting drunk on set with Sharon Needles and sneaking off set to buy supplies (once with Dida Ritz).note Dida herself revealed this in an interview in 2021. This was all in retaliation to the terrible conditions the queens were subject to on set which ranged from the infinitesimal budgets the queens were given for food to the crew not knowing the cast's names and instead giving them rude and dismissive nicknames.
For her return on All Stars Season 2, Adore was caught off guard by the harsh criticism she faced at the end of the first episode by guest judge Raven-Symoné and particularly by Michelle Visage, with whom Adore had recently been on tour and had developed a deeper friendship. As the rest of the cast prepared for the Snatch Game, they were even able to pick up on Adore being upset and once Ru came in to interview them all, Adore expressed her desire to quit. Even after an apology from Michelle, and her castmates pleading for her to stay, Adore ultimately decided to quit, later admitting in the All Stars 2 reunion that she regretted the choice.
Season 9's Eureka felt her knee pop after landing a split during episode 2's cheerleading-themed dance challenge, but she hid this from her fellow competitors and the crew until producers realized her knee was swelling up, forcing Eureka into a chair at the end of one episode and on crutches by episode 5. After that episode's Lip Sync For Your Life between Farrah Moan and Cynthia Lee Fontaine, Ru leaves the stage suddenly. Once she returned, she asked Eureka to come forward and revealed that the medical team had informed her that Eureka had torn her ACL and would need medical attention immediately and in no way could allow Eureka to continue. Ru gave Eureka an open invitation to Season 10 if she recovered, which she did, and she ultimately made it to the final lip sync for the crown.
All Stars elimination rules changed in Season 2 such that every week there were two top All Stars each week and they would Lip Sync For Your Legacy against each other, and the winner of that would reveal a lipstick with the All Star they chose to be eliminated. In All Stars Season 3, BenDeLaCreme swept the competition, winning all but one of the first five episodes and winning two Lip Syncs. Come episode 6 in a Spice Girls-themed challenge featuring the eliminated All Stars, she was in the top again, and won, which let her pick one All Star to eliminate and pick an All Star to return. However, when it came time to reveal the eliminated queen's lipstick, she revealed one with her own name on it hastily scrawled on in white correction fluid, surprising everyone in the room. She went on to say that she felt like she proved what she could do on the show, and that winning meant much more to her competitors than it did to her.
The second ever disqualification in Drag Race came in Season 12, but this time the disqualification happened in post-production. When Season 12 premiered, competitor Sherry Pie was accused by several men of posing as a casting director to elicit explicit fetish porn out of aspiring actors. Following her admission of guilt, the production team announced she would be disqualified from the competition and would not be invited back for the reunion or finale episodes filmed later that year (which inadvertantly spoiled that she was one of the final four). Sherry Pie would be ''heavily'' edited out of the season unless it was absolutely necessary for her to be on screen and she was actively removed from the show's social media presence and companion shows like Fashion Photo RuView. World of Wonder Productions also matched her episode winnings in charitable donations to the Trevor Project.
Season 14's Kornbread suffers an ankle injury while giving an over the top performance in the fourth episode's main challenge. When she is absent at the beginning of the next episode, a video message is played where she reveals she had been given doctor's orders to stay off her feet for 6-8 weeks and thus couldn't participate in the rest of the season. In a later interview with Michelle, she reveals that once production took her to see a doctor about the injury, she wouldn't have been allowed to return regardless, as she had left the production bubble and could have been exposed to COVID in the process.
RuPaul's Drag Race UK Series 2 had not one but two non-gameplay eliminations, and in the culmination of the same episode at that. At the end of episode 4, both Sister Sister and Ginny Lemon were up for elimination, and as the lip sync song began, Ginny Lemon blew kisses to the judges, walked to the back of the runway, then turned to the camera, cackled maniacally, and walked off stage, confusing everyone on stage. Backstage in the Werk Room she said she was tired and didn't want to lip sync against her friend Sister Sister. Later that night, as the remaining queens talked in the Werk Room about the episode, they were all informed that production had to cease immediately, as the COVID-19 Pandemic had began forcing mass quarantines and lockdowns. Production would not begin again for another seven months when some pandemic restrictions were lifted to enable filming to continue. However, Veronica Green had tested positive for COVID-19 and would not be allowed to return, and was given an invitation to appear on Series 3 instead. This led to one of the prior eliminated queens to be invited back, except Ginny who "done already done had herses" to quote Ru.
During UK Series 3, Victoria Scone injures her knee during a lip sync in the first episode. After struggling through a dance challenge in the second episode, she is absent at the beginning of the third, and Ru reveals that she will not be returning to the competition due to the injury. Unlike Eureka and Veronica before her, Victoria is not explicitly given an invitation to compete on the next season, although Ru says "I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of her". This would indeed follow through, however, with her casting on Canada Vs. The World.
Inti on the inaugural season of Drag Race España did not feel that the judges understood her drag persona which emphasized her Quechua (indigenous Bolivian) heritage, particularly on the episode 3 runway meant to emphasize their roots for which she wore a traditional Bolivian Carnival costume.note Which judging from her social media posts would have been much different if production hadn't forced some changes. Following the judges' critiques, Inti returned to the Werk Room, wiped off all her make-up and got back into her boy clothes, and despite her castmates' and even host Supremme de Luxe's requests for her to stay, she told them she made up her mind and would be quitting.
Canada Season 2 winner Icesis Couture was the only previous winner to have appeared in a “Vs. The World season, and she originally sought to hold on to her winning title going into Canada Vs. The World. However, come Episode 4, Icesis was noticeably feeling vacant and exhausted while still in the Werk Room preparing for that week’s challenge. It was there that she expresses to the other competitors that she wanted to drop out the game, because she realized she was not mentally prepared to return to the pressure of the competition, especially with the added pressure of being a previous winner. It was there she left before the challenge began. No one would be eliminated that episode. However, she does make an appearance alongside her eliminated competitors during the finale.

The Masked Singer:
In the fourth season of the US version, the Gremlin chose to eliminate himself without voting and was revealed to be Mickey Rourke. The Gremlin claimed his costume was too uncomfortable, but it is more than likely he felt he would be eliminated anyway.
In the fifth season of the US version, the Bulldog was ordered to unmask at the ceremony immediately without any voting or even revealing the judges' first guesses. This was because the Bulldog was really host Nick Cannon and the whole thing was a stunt to have him return and assume hosting duties again after Cannon allegedly tested positive for COVID-19.
In the eighth season of the US version, the Scarecrow willingly withdrew from the competition to thank the judges for everything they did. She was revealed to be Linda Blair.
The ninth season promos featured a mask called the French Hen that ended up not appearing in the season. As it turns out, the French Hen tested positive for COVID and had to withdraw, most likely being replaced by the Night Owl. The costume was later reused in the following season as the Royal Hen.
In the eleventh season, the Book eliminated himself as part of what he claimed was a prank and was revealed to be Kevin Hart.
There are several contestants who quit the show in foreign versions:
In the second season of the German version, a family member of the Cockroach became ill with COVID-19 and the Cockroach quit the competition to check on him. The Cockroach chose to be unmasked from outside the studio and was revealed to be singer Angelo Kelly. The Cockroach also did not appear for that season’s finale, which had a group performance by all the contestants, regardless of if they’d been eliminated or not.
In the second season of the Brazilian version, the Bear was forced to drop out after testing positive for COVID-19. She was revealed to be gymnast Daiane dos Santos.
In the second season of the Italian version, the Baby Alien withdrew due to having breathing issues and was revealed to be pop group Ricchi e Poveri. Oddly enough, the costume rejoined the competition with a new group of celebrities the following episode.
In the third season of the Italian version, the Penguin withdrew due to overheating, and was revealed to be singer Edoardo Vianello. Just like the Baby Alien, the Penguin rejoined the contest later.
In the first season of the Ukrainian version, the Buffalo quit and was revealed to be singer Oleh Vynnyk.
In the first season of the Peruvian version, the Lion quit to be with his family and was revealed to be racer Mario Hart.
In the second season of the Hungarian version, the Pig withdrew after testing positive for COVID and was revealed to be actress Claudia Liptai. Like the two Italian costumes, a new contestant was brought in to replace her.
In the second season of the Romanian version, the Owl quit after overheating and was revealed to be tennis player Ilie Năstase.

Kelly Brook pulled out after the death of her father.
Jade Johnson pulled out after a knee injury.
John Sergeant quit (because he feared he would've won otherwise, and thought that would be taking the joke too far).
Nicola Adams left the 2020 series after her dance partner tested positive for COVID-19; it had been made clear at the start of the series that either half of a couple testing positive would automatically result in this trope. note Normally, if one of the professional dancers is unable to appear in an episode, the celebrity they are partnering is given a temporary partner. However, covid restrictions meant that wasn't an option in this case.
Robert Webb was advised to leave because of his heart condition.
AJ Odudu had to drop out right before the 2021 final due to an injury.
Zig-zagged with Tony Adams in the 2022 series. He ended up in the dance off, but was unable to take part after suffering an injury backstage, and withdrew; however, it's likely that had that not happened, he would have been eliminated by the judges anyway.
Amanda Abbington has to miss a week of the 2023 series due to health reasons; the following Monday, she was confirmed to have withdrawn.
Nigel Harman was forced to withdraw right before the quarter final due to an injury; missing a week at this point in the competition means elimination as it would be unfair on the others.

Frankie Cocozza got ejected from Series 8 for boasting in front of several crewmembers that he had used illegal drugs (supposedly cocaine and cannabis) during filming.
Lucy Spraggan withdrew from Series 9. At the time her withdrawal was claimed to be the result of her contracting a severe chest infection, but she revealed a decade later that she had actually left after being sexually assaulted in-between the third and fourth weeks of the live shows.
Brooks Way were one of the three groups to make it to 2016's live shows but made a No Show during the first Saturday show. It had come out just beforehand that one of the two members had allegedly engaged in domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend as well as his brother/band-mate. At ITV's suggestion the band withdrew from the competition which was announced the day after that week's elimination. The Mole (Dutch)
In season 5, Roeland became severely ill and had to leave the show. Another contestant was brought back to the show just before he left, and there was no execution in that episode.
In season 10, Manuel, like Roeland, became too ill to continue playing. There was also no execution in that episode.
In season 13, Janine jumped the wrong way during a challenge and fractured her spine as a result. She assured the viewers in a post-production scene that she was recovering fine and that The Show Must Go On. There was still an execution at the end of that episode, but the executed contestant was brought back in the next episode Doubles as a case of What Could Have Been, as it was revealed in the reunion episode that she had been one of only three contestants in that season who had suspected the correct Mole.
In season 17, Jean-Marc left the show at the end of episode 2. In his case, it wasn't illness or injury — it was the psychological stress of being on The Mole affecting him so much that he had been unable to sleep for three straight days.

The Traitors (US):
At the end of Episode 5 in Season 1 it was revealed Amanda had left the game due to reasons beyond her control. She later stated that she had tested positive for COVID and had to be removed.
In the Season 1 finale, the two remaining traitors (Cirie Fields from Survivor and Arie Luyendyk from The Bachelor) and two remaining faithfuls (Quentin and Andie) voted whether to end the game or not. If all four voted to end the game, Cirie and Arie, as the remaining traitors, would win and split the pot. However, Cirie chose to vote for the game to continue and thus enact another banishment, hoping to eliminate Arie so she could get the prize for herself. Realizing this, Arie opted to reveal himself as a traitor and withdraw before the banishment, allowing Cirie to win the game.

One contestant on Cutthroat Kitchen was removed from the contest by accidentally cutting off the tip of a finger (although given the sheer number of absurd things chefs on CK have to do it's honestly surprising it hasn't happened more often). The rule, it transpires, is that if a contestant leaves due to injury, all remaining participants go on to the next round - but the judge nominates their favourite dish, and that contestant's war chest is immediately refilled to its original $25,000 US. The wounded contestant came back in a subsequent episode and won.

Total Drama Do Over:
In Island:
Blaineley is kicked out early for being too old to compete on a teens-only show.
Izzy runs away in "If You Can't Take the Heat..." to avoid being tracked down by the RCMP for blowing up a kitchen.
Duncan is eliminated in "Hook, Line, and Screamer" for wielding a weapon with the intent to harm an alleged serial killer, which violates his parole.
Chef randomly kicks out Katie to allow the returning Sierra back in "Brunch of Disgustingness."
Action:
Katie gets ousted again in "Full Metal Drama," as Eva needed a spot to return to the game and Mama DJ volunteers Katie for breaking her son's heart.
Cameron gets his jaw shattered in "Buns of Steel" and is medically evacuated to heal. This leads to another nonstandard elimination, as Mama DJ forces DJ to quit the game out of fear for his safety.
Vanessa quits in "Love at First Fight" when it's revealed that Heather kidnapped her and took her place for several episodes, leaving the actual Vanessa locked away and traumatized.
World Tour:
Abigail volunteers for elimination in "Loch Where You're Going" as a debt to her boyfriend, who would have been eliminated instead.
Gwen quits the show in "The Ex-Files" to help an eliminated Charlotte, who's suffering from Laser-Guided Amnesia, get home safely.
In "Russian Away," Chef, who's hosting for the day, doesn't want to actually read the votes and gives Mel the power to vote off anybody she wants. Mel chooses Brick out of spite.
Noah is ejected by temporary host Dakota for destroying Dakota's stuff.
All Stars: Cody is deemed too injured to compete in the game after Mal sends him flying off a cliff.
Revenge: In "A Mine is a Terrible Thing to Waste," Chris has one member of each losing team volunteer for elimination. Dave quits the game out of guilt for how he treated Candace, and Rodney quits the game so he doesn't end up "cheating" on his new girlfriend.
Pahkitew:
Zachary gets "eliminated" immediately because Chris needs somebody to take Chef's place as his assistant. He's properly eliminated once Chef returns.
Fallon quits in "Error! Sanity Not Found" because she's frightened of what the island is becoming and she wants to start a relationship with Zachary.

The Amazing Race (US)
The threat of being "evacuated" has been cited by contestants several times, the first being Steve & Dave in Season 4. Dave wrenched his knee badly while doing a glacier trek on the first episode, and rather than allow the show's medics the chance to declare him unfit to continue, he declined medical attention. It was, it turns out, badly enough damaged that he required surgery to repair it once he got home. Despite that, they made it several more legs before they were eliminated.
It seems that, unless they're in risk of dying, like when Bopper was disqualified at the beginning of Season 24, the Race's policy is to let the team decide whether or not to keep going. In Season 22, Dave tore his Achilles tendon, and desperately needed surgery to even walk, yet was allowed to keep running the Race until they finally dropped out at the beginning of the fifth leg.
Jim and Marsha during Season 5 nearly missed the very first flight of the game after Jim tripped on the run from the starting line to their baggage for the first clue and tore his knee open in the fall. The airlines refused to let him board without getting medical attention first, and the time it took to get to the first aid center and back nearly made them too late to board.
As for the quitting, there was Marshall & Lance, who simply stopped during a task in Egypt in season 5. In this case, there was also a knee injury involved, but they did quit rather than being removed from the Race for medical reasons.
In season 11, Uchenna and Joyce took a gamble on a flight where they had an hour to connect and ended up missing the connection. They ended up about twelve hours behind everyone else and when they finally got to Malaysia, they were sent straight to the pit stop and eliminated.
In Season 15, Maria & Tiffany chose to quit when they were unable to complete either Detour choice.
As already mentioned, Dave & Connor had to drop out of Season 22 due to Dave's injury, making them the only team to drop out when they already weren't in last place and about to be eliminated anyway.
Meanwhile, there usually is at least one Mercy Kill per season. Season 2 had three Mercy Kills, including two legs in a row.
Mercy Kills were administered in both Season 1 and 4's finales, with Bill & Joe and David & Jeff not even making it to the Final Destination city before the race ended.
Similar to the Mercy Kill is the Field Elimination, which happens when a team is unable to complete a task (or unwilling to quit), so Phil goes out to eliminate them on the course. It happened twice on Season 16.
One of the most famous was in Season 6, where Lena and Kristy were field eliminated by Phil in the field after spending ten hours unrolling hay bales for a clue. (They weren't eliminated until two hours after the final team checked in.)
Season 15's Zev & Justin are the only team to officially be ejected, when they lost one of their passports, and were therefore unable to continue on the race.
Season 13's Toni & Dallas also would have been ejected from the game for losing their passports in Moscow, that is had they not lost all their money as well. Instead, they were subject to a Field Elimination.
Season 21's James & Abba had their stuff and the former's passport stolen in Moscow by a taxi driver. They were saved by a non-elimination leg and allowed to run (and lose) the next leg thanks to it also taking place in Moscow.
In Season 18, Mel & Mike recounted after their final episode they were told by the medical team to end the task they were doing (searching around in mud during the Japanese winter) because they both had hypothermia. The only other team behind them finished the task and made it to the Pit Stop before producers told Mel & Mike to do the same to be eliminated.
In Season 23, Chester & Ephraim hit not one, not two, but three delayed flights on their way into Portugal, getting in long after night had fallen and the other teams had checked in. It took them so long, Phil met them at the airport to eliminate them.
In Season 26, Bergen & Kurt couldn't drive a stick shift, so they abandoned their car - only to arrive at a task that required a car to complete. After finishing a penalty, they tried to get to their next destination via train, only for them to get hopelessly lost. They wound up going to a train station and waiting there until Phil came out to eliminate them in the field.
In Season 27, Kelly & Shevonne struggled on the first leg's Detour so much that, by the time they completed one of them, Phil came to eliminate them.
Season 33 has a unique case. Production halted on February 28th, 2020 due to the worsening concern of Covid-19 and the nine teams left were sent back home. Production resumed a year and a half later in September 2021, by which time four teams couldn't return for various reasons. These teams and reasons include: friends Anthony & Spencer because Anthony had just started a new job and couldn't get the time off, married couple Sam & Connie because Connie was pregnant, dating couple Caro & Ray because they'd broken up and the former had moved back home to Sweden and didn't have a visa, and married couple Taylor & Isaiah who were set to return but had to back out at the last minute due to a death in Taylor's family. To make up for the loss of four teams, the first two eliminated teams, Michael & Moe and Arun & Natalia, were brought back.
In Season 34, Abby & Will were medically removed after testing positive for COVID-19. As they were technically eliminated, the leg continued as scheduled, with the last team not being eliminated but instead starting the next leg in last place. The season was originally planned to have zero non-elimination legs.
Also in Season 34 came Aubrey and David's elimination on the course when they had to quit because David wasn't a good enough swimmer to do either side of the detour.

Episode 4 of Top Chef: Just Desserts had two non-gameplay eliminations: first Seth was "evacuated" by the producers when (after several weeks of erratic behavior) he had a panic attack and collapsed during the prep for the Quick Fire challenge. Then Malika quit at Judges Table (while the guest judge was trying to tell her how much she enjoyed her dish!), saying that the stress from the competition was ruining her enjoyment of cooking.

In the first season, Tara left because her father was dying of cancer.
In the second season, John had pulled both hamstrings; he left rather than be a millstone to his team.
In the third season, Jake was railing against everyone involved since the first time he was sent to an Elimination Challenge. The second time he was sent to it, he stormed out of the game. Mike, who had gotten eliminated just before, took his place in the Elimination Challenge and won his way back into the game. Jake had previously attempted to invoke this by trying to provoke Mike into hitting him. It didn't work.
Earlier in season three, Billy Rogers left because his wife was having complications with her pregnancy.

Face/Off:
Season 3 had Jerkass Joe storm out after a stressful team challenge and arguing with his partner and the judges, in the first episode. He was counted as that episode's elimination and nobody else was sent home.
Laney from season 5 left voluntarily, after making it to the top 5. In the show, her reason was mainly homesickness, but she later explains that she was feeling guilty about getting in the way of the other contestants.

Most "eliminations" in Squid Game do not count as this, as even things like the riots and Sae-byeok being killed by Sang-woo were all planned by the staff. However, there are a handful that are not planned or part of the game in any capacity:
Player 271, after being informed that Jang Deok-su stole his lunch, gets into a fight with the man and is subsequently beaten to death.
Byeong-gi is shot by the staff after he is discovered to have been working with a few of the guards to receive an unfair advantage in the games.
Player 069, after having won the marbles game but lost his wife, Player 070, in the process, hangs himself just before the next game.

American Idol
Season 1 had Delano Cagnolatti who was disqualified for lying about his age (being 29 when the cut off at the time was 25). He was in the final 30 by Ejay Day, who would go on to compete in the top ten.
Season 2 had two contestants disqualified for criminal pasts, despite one contestant disclosing it to Idol and him being acquitted of said charge laid against him. Another early contender, Frenchy Davis, was disqualified (somewhat late in the process) for nude pictures she had posed for an incest-tinged website.
Season 5 had twins that were disqualified for identity theft.
Chris Golightly from Season 9 was disqualified for having a record contract at the time of his audition (the rules stated that if you have a previous deal, it ends right then and there)
In season 11, Jermaine Jones was disqualified after making it to the top 12, when it was revealed to the producers that he had more than one outstanding arrest warrant under other names.

The Masked Toon Singer currently has ten eliminations like this so far.
The first was the Bee aka Squidward who was eliminated after Spongebob followed him home, which gave away their identity to one of the judges.
The second was the Spider aka Grim who was forcibly unmasked by Mandy. This creates a double elimination as the Knight (Ryuko Matoi) had just been unmasked.
The third was the Wizard aka Plankton, who broke the rules by sending a robot to compete in their place.
The fourth was the Mole aka Brittany, who broke their foot during a practice and dropped out to recover.
The fifth was the Mango aka Lord Hater, after losing his temper at Wander, who was asking questions. This may have created the double elimination the previous episode, resulting in the eliminations of both the Lion (Baloo) and the Cerberus (Spyro the Dragon).
The sixth was the Dragon aka Courtney who is forcibly eliminated after it comes out that she was trying to fix the game in her favor. This creates a double elimination, as Tree (Iris) had gotten the least amount of votes.
The seventh was the Moneybags aka The Earl, who quit after being unable to take the pressure of keeping his identity secret.
The eighth was the Pirate aka Jack Cayman, who was disqualified after attacking a guest panelist in response to him adding a fee to vote. It wouldn’t have mattered as he got the least votes anyway.
The ninth was the Birthday Cake aka both versions of Pinkie Pie, as this was a near exact repeat of the Bulldog scenario from the main show. Fortunately, the night wasn’t a total waste as Bookcase aka WordGirl is voted off normally.
The tenth was Fast Food aka Chanda Besu and Elizabeth Wagner, who quit after a fight, causing them to fear that the contest was straining their friendship.
Smile, aka Glenn Martin subverts this, as they are found out by their family, but Pinkie decides to allow them to perform again before a final decision is made on if they are going home or not...only for it to not matter as Smile is eliminated that round anyways.

The Traitors (UK) offered this as a gameplay mechanic in one episode, as part of a game in which the contestants were asked to name the fellow contestant that they most trust, with each person named sitting down. The person who was left standing, Maddy, was then offered the chance to leave with the day's winnings (£3,000), or to turn it down and put the money back in the prize pot. She didn't take the offer, though it should be noted that she also had won the shield that day which protected her from murder (which nobody bar her knew).

Random Drama Series: This happens several times during the series, with ROTI and All-Stars 2 being the only seasons so far not to have one.
Island:
In "Paintball Deer Hunter", Malcolm is eliminated after being mauled by a bear. He's brought back only to quit in "Wawanakwa Gone Wild".
Action:
In "Top Dog", Victor is disqualified for voting out Heather when he was only brought back to make sure she made the finale.
World Tour has the most examples:
The first episode has Noah quit after getting fed up with the new singing rule.
In "Jamaica Me Sweat", Duncan ends up being medevaced after being crushed by the plane.
Victor is disqualified once again in "Scarlett Fever", this time for not singing.
Just like canon, Chris disqualifies Sierra for blowing up the jumbo jet, albeit under different circumstances.
All-Stars:
In "You Regatta Be Kidding Me", Angel is disqualified when Chris believes she destroyed his home.
Matthew is disqualified in "The Bold and the Booty-ful" for destroying Chris's house, rigging votes, attempted murder, being last in the challenge and being too severely injured to continue.
Pahkitew Island:
In "Splash Dash Redemption", Dave quits to prevent Britney's elimination, per Courtney's advice. It turns out that Courtney was going to be eliminated.
"Blast From The Past" has two: Geoff is disqualified for slamming Matthew into the island's computer while Izzy is chased off by the RCMP.
Danger Island:
In "Fright or Flight", Lindsay is eliminated after she is severely injured crossing a minefield.
In "By Hook or By Cook", Owen quits out of guilt for revealing Contessa's orientation to Olivia. Unfortunately, he ended up doing exactly what Olivia expected him to.
