Parody Episodes or Whole Plot References of The Wizard of Oz. The parodies are usually of the Judy Garland film, not the original books, mainly because of Small Reference Pools, but also due to that film's conceit of Dorothy's companions being portrayed by recognisable human actors in costume (as opposed to an actual lion, scarecrow, and tinman), thus allowing for existing characters to be easily slotted into those roles. If it's a Formula-Breaking Episode in a series, it will almost certainly be based on the film sufficiently to take advantage of the pre-existing But You Were There, and You, and You concept.
A handy way to abbreviate the story that has been used with this trope repeatedly is to have the main character travel to see the Wizard, probably meeting the equivalents of Dorothy's companions on the way, and then jump straight to the final confrontation with the Wizard.
As an interesting footnote, while the original book is in the Public Domain in the U.S., the movie is not. So you may run into a Lawyer-Friendly Cameo standing in for elements that come only from the film, such as the ruby slippersnote in the book they're silver shoes, the Lollipop Guild, or the song "Over the Rainbow".
Compare to Dystopian Oz for dark references and adaptations of the Oz series.

There was an episode of The Jetsons called Elroy in Wonderland. note  Despite the name of episode, this has more in common with The Wizard of Oz than Alice in Wonderland. The episode involves Elroy and Astro winding up in an Oz-like world inhabited by antique robots. During their journey, Elroy and Astro meet three robots who sound a lot like George, Jane and Judy.

Sketch comedy show Roundhouse based a whole episode on this concept, as the Anyfamily daughter ends up in Hollywood and the plot plays out with a lot of mid-1990's-specific gags: Luncheon Land, The Wicked Witch of the West Coast (aka Shannen Doherty), The Horse of In Living Color!, etc.

Bill Nye the Science Guy had a segment on probability called "The Wizard of Odds", which parodies the scene where Toto reveals who the Wizard is. In the parody, Dorothy asks him about her odds of getting home. He teaches her that it doesn't take a wizard to know about probability.

MADtv, where Dorothy beats up Glinda because she didn't tell Dorothy how the Ruby Slippers worked in her first scene in Oz.
MADtv had another Wizard of Oz parody where Dorothy (Nicole Parker) is caught in a hurricane (as she's now living in Florida) and ends up in Oz. She clicks her heels to return home and not have to go through the plot again — until hurricanes keep bringing her back to Oz and crushing members of the Lollipop Guild.
And another, where Dorothy wakes up to find that her Auntie Em and her family are replaced by M&M's and that the whole ending is being shamelessly used for a commercial.
There was another one before that, where Dorothy meets a black slave with one leg in Oz — she ends up having sex with him in the bushes.

That '70s Show has an Imagine Spot in which Jackie visits Oz to seek advice from the Wizard. Unfortunately, the rest of the gang expresses dissatisfaction with the roles Jackie assigns them, note Kelso as a brainless Sarecrow, Hyde as a cold-hearted Tin Woodsman, Fez as a Cowardly Lion that looks more like a bear, Donna as the Wicked Witch, and Eric as Donna's flying monkey and they chase her down the yellow brick road instead of performing a traditional spoof. When Jackie finally reaches the Wizard, played by Pamela Sue Martin, she helps Jackie realize, "Winning titles and being a good person are the same thing!" This is a rare example of the parody being based on the books rather than the Judy Garland film; the costumes are straight out of W.W. Denslow's original 1900 illustrations.

The Wonderful Galaxy of Oz. Yes, such a thing exists. Dorothy is a native of New Kansas; the Tin Man is (what else?) a robot; the Scarecrow is some kind of mutant plant hybrid wossname; and the Lion is a humanoid lion. The Wicked Witch is basically Mumm-Ra, and plots to take over the galaxy.

Magic Adventures of Mumfie has a few similarities to The Wizard of Oz-first off, there is a scarecrow, a character who wants to return home like Dorothy did (Pinkey), a powerful ruler, a scary villain, and a magic item the character has to keep safe like the ruby slippers (in this case, it was a jewel).

A two-part episode of the Christian radio series Adventures in Odyssey was a KYDS Radio presentation that reinterpreted the Wizard Of Oz story as an allegory to how Jesus described the paths people take to get to happiness. The story involved a girl named Dottie winding up in an Oz-like land after a tornado, and the scarecrow and tin man were a department store mannequin and robot, respectively (the lion was still a lion, except he talked like Yoda), and they set off to meet the "Wonderful Wishy Woz" as directed by the Fairy Odd Mother. (No relation to Cosmo and Wanda.) In a twist on the usual formula of these Wizard Of Oz parodies, the Wishy Woz is just a neurotic and stupid little man who is no help at all; the Yellow Brick Road, er, Big Fat Road, leads to nowhere, and the Fairy Odd Mother and the Wicked Witch of the West analogue are one and the same. In the end, it turns out that Dottie had needed to speak to a seemingly unimportant fisherman (who is subtly implied to be either God or Jesus, if the fact that he calls himself "I AM" is any indication) that the Fairy Odd Mother had told her to avoid in order to get home.

In the Dennis the Menace episode "The Wizzer of Odd", after being read the story of The Wizard of Oz on a stormy night, Dennis has a dream where a tornado sends him and Ruff to "Munchville". There, Dennis meets the Scaredy Cat (PeeBee), the Tin Kid (Gina), and the Cowardly Lion (Joey). Margaret takes on the role of the Wicked Witch, who imprisons Dennis and his friends for eating her gingerbread castle, which melts during a rainstorm rather than her. RWBY:
Several of the teachers and mentors are based on Wizard of Oz characters. Ozpin is the Wizard, as The Chessmaster behind several events, and whereas the Wizard is an ordinary man pretending to be a mage, he's a mage pretending to be ordinary. Qrow is the Scarecrow, going by his childishness and heavy drinking habits to shut down his brain. Ironwood is the Tin Man, as a cyborg with a notable Lack of Empathy. Leonardo Lionheart is the Cowardly Lion, being a leonine faunus who betrays the heroes to save his own skin. And Glynda Goodwitch is... well. She uses a riding crop like a magic wand, and despite her stern personality, is rather compassionate.
Main characters Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang, while being respectively based on Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Beauty from Beauty and the Beast and Goldilocks, also have elements of characters from the Wizard of Oz. Ruby is Dorothy, a Naïve Newcomer who loves her pet dog, and her name is a reference to the ruby slippers. Weiss is the Tin Man, outwardly cold and unemotional, yet grows more in touch with her feelings. Blake is the Cowardly Lion, as a Cat Girl who laments her tendency to run away from problems. And Yang is the Scarecrow, as she acts like a shonen hero and rushes headlong into situations without thinking.

The Scrubs episode "My Way Home", manages to be a subversion, containing many Shout Outs rather than being a Whole Plot Reference. It starts with J.D. listening to Toto; When he arrives at the hospital, the Janitor has painted different routes on the hallways, with yellow leading to the exit, and spray paints J.D.'s sneakers ruby red; J.D.'s only goal is to get back home and enjoy his day off; Eliot needs brains to give a lecture; Turk needs a heart for surgery; Carla needs courage to become a new parent; Drs. Cox and Kelso act as the Wizard at a time; Jordan has a one-off "I'm melting"; and at the end, Ted's band does a beautiful cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow (ukulele included)".

Earthworm Jim did this in "Wizard of Ooze", casting Jim and Peter Puppy in the roles of Dorothy and Toto. In the Scarecrow's place, Walter plays the Fat Lad (who wants dental floss to alleviate his horrible tooth hygiene); the Tin Man is the Grim Reaper (he wants frozen yogurt, as the humans he takes get to try it and he doesn't); and Hamstinator plays the Brave Hamster in lieu of the Cowardly Lion (he is so brave he cannot resist putting himself in danger, so he wants "a reasonable dose of fear"). The Wicked Witch of the West, predictably enough, is Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, while Princess What's-Her-Name is the Good Witch, Mrs. Bleveredge is the Wicked Witch of the East (from whom Jim swipes a pair of sapphire toe socks instead of ruby slippers) and Professor Monkey-for-a-Head plays one of the Flying Monkeys (in fact, he's the only one). The episode even sneaks in a parody of The Seventh Seal when the Professor invokes Chess with Death. And the Wizard? a suitless Jim!

Cookie's Crumby Pictures segments once did a Wizard of Oz spoof called "The Cookie of Oz" where the Good Witch of the parody teaches Cookie Monster about following directions.
There was also an episode in the 1970s in which Margaret Hamiliton reprised her role as the Wicked Witch of the West. Unfortunately, it was pulled from circulation because it scared too many children.

Season 41 has two references to The Wiz in the episode hosted by Ryan Gosling, which aired two days after NBC premiered their own version of the musical, The Wiz Live!:
Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che reports, "On Thursday, a gang of Black people, who were allegedly under the influence of narcotics, murdered two high-ranking community leaders on live television..." then reveals that he was reading the Fox News Channel recap of The Wiz.
A crossover between The Wiz Live! and 1939's The Wizard of Oz features Ryan Gosling as the '39 Scarecrow, who awakens from a train ride to find himself in "East Oz", the setting of The Wiz Live! A culture clash ensues when the "West Oz" denizen meets a 2015-minded Dorothy (Sasheer Zamata), her similarly modern friends (Michael Che as the Scarecrow, Jay Pharoah as the Tin Man, and Kenan Thompson as the Cowardly Lion), and the sassy Wiz herself (Leslie Jones, following the lead of The Wiz Live! by casting a female performer in the role of the Wiz).

Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show is partially a send up of the Wizard of Oz. The titular trio travel to the city to see a man that will solve their problems and along the way they gain the things they needed; for Ed, a brain (he uses a door to beat Eddy's brother instead of his own strength), for Double D, a spine (he stands up to Eddy's cruel joke and Eddy's brother for beating on Eddy), and for Eddy, a heart (he finally admits his guilt and takes the blame for his actions and attitude). By doing this, they earn a happy ending for themselves.

In "Old World Blues" DLC of Fallout: New Vegas, you start off with your brain, your heart and your spine removed and your main goal is to find a way to get them back into your body. Doctor Mobius is a combination of the Wizard of Oz and the Wicked Witch, being the primary antagonist and as it turns out a much less intimidating figure than he first appears since as it turns out, he's a senile Anti-Villain who bears you no ill-will and is attempting to stop his former colleagues from turning the world outside into their testing grounds. Similarly, Mobius reveals that the the three pieces of technology you you had to collect before facing him can serve as the organs needed by the Think Tank (the Stealth Suit represents the heart, the X-2 Antenna represents the brain, and the Sonic Emitter represents the spine), so in a way, you basically have what you need all along. He then recounts how this is similar to a story he remembers of a gang of murderous thugs who continued massacring all in their way despite this.

Farscape often references The Wizard of Oz (along with Alice in Wonderland) with its human protagonist unexpectedly picked up and thrown into the midst of a universe of bizarre and often insane alien lifeforms. The first two times John Crichton thinks he's returned to Earth use the But You Were There, and You, and You to reveal he hasn't, whereas the episode where he does return for real is called "Kansas" (even though he's actually in Florida for most of it). This trope is also a Fourth Wall gag on how the episodes were filmed in Australia, the "Land of Oz".

How It Should Have Ended showed an alternate scenario, in which one of the Munchkins shoots the Wicked Witch of the West dead as she threatens Dorothy. Glinda comments that this feat puts a damper on her plan to make Dorothy kill the Witch, accidentally letting a darker side of herself show through. Embarassed, she quickly teleports Dorothy back to Kansas.

One of the many parodies in the 200th episode of Stargate SG-1. Vala as Dorothy; Mitchell as the Scarecrow; Teal'c as the Tin Man; Daniel as the Lion; Carter as the Good Witch, and Landry as the Wizard.
For extra fun, other than the plot itself no overt references to Wizard of Oz are made until the end, either in dialog or in aesthetics (the house is replaced by a spaceship, the Witch of the East and Wizard expires are only ever referred to as the "Evil Ruler" and the "Supreme Being" and the munchkins analogs look like typical Stargate transplanted ancient human peasants, and the similarity between Vala's outfit and Dorothy's Iconic Outfit are subtle enough that it can easily be mistaken for just a new outfit) so inattentive viewers might not realize it's an Off To See The Wizard plot until Michell, Teal'c and Daniel suddenly pop out from Behind the Black in full costume.

The cast of Gilligan's Island do this in Gilligan in Oz. Gilligan is Dorothy (and gets a pair of ruby shoes), Mrs. Howell is Glinda, Kinkaid the hunter is the Wicked Wizard of the West, the Professor is the Scarecrow, Mary Ann is Elleree (an Original Character who's the last of the Porcelain People), Ginger is the Tin Woman, the Skipper is the Cowardly Lion and Mr. Howell is the Wizard. Ironically enough, Mary Ann of the original show is herself meant to be a parody of Dorothy Gale. Being Trapped in a Strange Land ain't helping her case with the show's premise, but she does often mention living with her aunt and uncle back in Kansas...as well as occasionally donning ubiquitous pigtails and a gingham dress.

Flower Knight Girl: The story event "The Mysterious Wizard of Eda" is a Storybook Episode where several Flower Knights find themselves in the country of Doulily, subsequently going on a journey across the land to find their way back home, meeting the equivalent story characters in the form of alternate versions of pre-existing knights, and lampshading various story moments. The Flower Knights introduced in the event are even based on several of the lead characters: Peristrophe's a young girl accompanied by a dog named Toto; Reed's a scarecrow-looking girl who believes themselves to be an idiot; and Screw Flower's a Tin Man in another sense.

Phineas and Ferb did one in which Candace read the book and fell asleep, having an Oz-based dream in which (in order of appearance):
Perry is Toto.
The Fireside Girls are the Munchkins.
Suzy is the Wicked Witch of the East.
Isabella is the Good Witch.
Doofenshmirtz is the Wicked Witch—er, Warlock of the West ("It's a robe, not a dress.")
Baljeet is a Scarecrow who wants to be cool.
The (rusted) Tin Man is replaced by Jeremy as a talking tree.
Buford is a cross between a Lion/Tiger/Bear ("Oh my!") and doesn't want anything in particular (though he gets a sandwich).
The Wizard is Linda.
Phineas and Ferb have no real role from the story, but pop up occasionally to try to show Candace how to have fun by deviating from the Yellow Sidewalk.

The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley had an episode called Blowin' in the Wind which plays with this trope. Bugs Bunny, of all people, likes to do Wizard impressions in Tiny Toon Adventures. He's got a giant talking head set up in his office in at least two episodes. The second of these, "The Learning Principal" (part of "Looniversity Daze"), has Bugs copping to his inspiration when Buster (who didn't know Bugs was the principal) unmasks him. "Well, it worked in The Wizard of Oz."
Also from Tiny Toon Adventures, in "Happy Birthday Hamton" (part of "Playtime Toons"), Buster, Babs, and Plucky sing a parody of "We're off to See the Wizard" on their way to the toy store to buy presents for Hamton.

As the World Turns once did a Storybook Episode as a St. Valentine's Day Special, with the Framing Device of all the characters reading fairy tales to one of the show's little kids, and the final story being a Wizard of Oz parody. Being a soap opera, Dorothy's companions all fall in love with her, explaining why she wants to get back to Kansas. Hilariously, the reader points out the whole story is too long to finish in one night, especially as the last sketch, only for another character to tell her not to skip the part with the Wicked Witch, since that's everyone's favorite part, and finishes off the story.

Emerald City Confidential is a "retelling" of sorts through a Film Noir lens, as a detective is hired by Dorothy (who prefers 'Dee') to find her missing fiance. It plays with the canon from both the film and books: The Lion's now a sleazy lawyer, the Tin Man is an ineffectual ruler who allows crime to run rampant, the Scarecrow is a jaded advisor to Queen Ozma, and Toto can speak.

Archie Comics did a couple of these:
One story featured Betty as Dorothy, wearing a pair of ruby sneakers coveted by Veronica as the Wicked Witch of the West. Archie, Reggie and Jughead played the roles of the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, Mr. Lodge was the Wizard and the Good Witches of various compass points were played by characters like Big Ethel, Midge and Nancy.
Another story featured Veronica as Dorothy, carrying the "ruby credit card" and pursued by Cheryl Blossom, who took over the Wicked Witch of the West role. The male characters all reprised their roles, while Betty became the Good Witch of the North.

VeggieTales brings us The Wonderful Wizard of Ha's, combining the Wizard of Oz with the parable of The Prodigal Son. Junior Asparagus (or rather, Darby O'Gill for some reason) and his dog Tutu leave his father's Kansas farm in search of adventure in the Land of Ha's, by following Old Yellow McToad. It turns out that the Wizard of Ha's is a con man who is just out to take people's money for his amusement park, and Junior was better off at his father's home.

Saturday Night Live parodies:
The Season 5 episode hosted by Elliot Gould has a Canadian version (The Incredible Man) where Dorothy follows yellow snow instead of a yellow brick road and befriends a hockey player, a Mountie, etc. (This sketch became notorious when Garrett Morris {SNL's token black cast member at the time} had a nervous breakdown backstage after being cast as a flying monkey.)
Seasons 20 and 29 have similar parodies involving Dorothy's arrival in Munchkinland. In Season 20, the Munchkins aren't impressed by her accidental killing of the Wicked Witch of the East and want her to go away. In Season 29, it turns out that her house landed on not just the Wicked Witch, but also several Munchkins — and the latter aren't quite dead yet. (This sketch ends with an announcer entering the scene and recommending the viewer to rewatch it while stoned and listening to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon.)
Season 36 has the movie as the focus of an episode of Turner Classic Movie channel's show "The Essentials". The episode shows deleted scenes featuring a nerdy weather vane (played by Fred Armisen) joining Dorothy (Anne Hathaway), The Tin Man (Taran Killam), The Scarecrow (Andy Samberg), and the Cowardly Lion (Bill Hader) on their trip to Oz.

This appears in the Muppet Babies (1984) episode "By the Book" along with parodies of Robin Hood and Peter Pan. Piggy and Rowlf get the Dorothy and Toto roles, Scooter is Glinda note  yes, Scooter, since Skeeter is not interested in books and doesn't play along with this , Kermit is the Scarecrow, Fozzie is the Cowardly Lion, and Gonzo is the Tin Man (again, presaging how these three characters were used in The Muppets' Wizard of Oz). Bunsen plays the Wizard, with Beaker as his assistant, and tries to send everyone home in a hot-air balloon, only for it to be attacked by Animal as the (unseen) Wicked Witch's flying monkey.

Black Dynamite's special hour-long musical episode "The Wizard of Watts" or "Oz Ain't Got S&@# On The Wiz" does this with The Wiz. Black Dynamite is Dorothy, Creamcorn is the Scarecrow, Honey Bee is a Dot Matrix inspired Tin Woman, and Bullhorn is the Cowardly Lion. Additionally, Basehead appears as a "Flying Junkie", the Witch role is fulfilled by Corrupt Cop "The Wicked Bitch of the West Side" note His police brutality being caught on tape taking the place of a bucket of water, and the Wizard role is given to Magic Johnson, though the man behind the curtain is actually Donald Sterling.

The Amanda Show had a Blockblister mockbuster of The Wizard of Oz, titled The Wizard of Voz. Blini and Biscotti played Dorothy and the Scarecrow, respectively, and basically recited dialogue similar to quotes from the movie until Dorothy tapped her fuzzy red "ruby" slippers to return home.

In one Robot Chicken sketch the Nerd ends up dreaming that he's in the Wizard of Oz. Soon he realizes that this is his dream and he can make it as awesome as he wants, and turns the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion into The Crow, Optimus Prime, and Lion-O respectively. They end up going to beat up the witch themselves, culminating on all of them (yes, even the robot) peeing on her to melt her. The Nerd then manipulates the dream one last time to get them all on a beach with topless French models.

Once Upon a Time's third season features the Wicked Witch of the West as an arc villain, gathering the heart, brain, and courage of three characters for her ultimate plan. Two episodes' flashbacks are set in Oz:
"It's Not Easy Being Green" casts Zelena in the Dorothy role, brought to Oz by a tornado and eventually headed to the Emerald City to see the Wizard so he can help her return to her home realm. When she feels rejected there, she returns to Oz and turns the Wizard into her first flying monkey, completing her transformation into the Wicked Witch.
"Kansas" brings Dorothy herself to Oz, where she eventually throws water on Zelena, causing her to melt, then goes to see the Wizard. The Wizard gives Dorothy the silver slippers, allowing her to return to Kansas. The Wizard, in this instance, is revealed to be Zelena, who faked her death.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has never done a whole plot reference, but it does make several references to The Wizard of Oz.
Possibly a coincidence, but there is a character named Oz.
Buffy refers to the hyena-possessed bullies in "The Pack" as the "winged monkeys".
In "Flooded", Andrew boasts that he trained flying demon monkeys to disrupt a school play.
In "Nightmares", Billy Palmer awakens from his coma and, seeing the Scoobies around his bed, says, "I had the strangest dream. And you were in it, and you..."
In "The Yoko Factor", Willow says, "If ever a whiz there was."
In "Empty Places", Rona says, "Ding, dong, the witch is dead" when Buffy is ousted from the house.
In "Grave", Dark!Willow gleefully says, "Fly, my pretty, fly!" when she sends her ball of fire to seek Andrew and Jonathan. Anya refers to her as the most powerful witch in the Western Hemisphere, which would make DW the Wicked Witch of the West.
The book "Halloween Rain" makes more than a few comparisons of Cordelia to the Wicked Witch of the West. Willow also calls her Beta Bitch Aphrodesia a winged monkey.
The episode "No Place Like Home" takes its name from the movie, obviously. A similar reference is made in the Angel episodes "Over the Rainbow" and "There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb". In that former, Cordelia clicks her heels three times (as Dorothy does in the film) and grumbles, "Worth a shot."

All That had a sketch titled "The Wizard of Cos". In it, Dorothy journeys through the Land of Cos to Bill Cosby's house, in hopes that he could help her go home and take a shower. Along the way, she befriends Mr. Toad, who wants a way to keep his face from accidentally scaring children, and Pasta Man, who wants some sauce to go along with the noodles that adorn him. This was All That's longest sketch, and took up two acts.

The De La Soul music video for "Oooh" (from their 2000 album, "AOI: Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump") was a ghetto version of The Wizard of Oz. In the video, a woman with a chihuahua in her purse is denied access to a club (by Dave Chappelle, using the voice he uses for his crackhead characters on Half Baked and Chappelle's Show). When she tries to sneak in, the woman falls and finds herself in the land of "Oooh" dressed as Dorothy with the three members of De La Soul as the Lion, The Scarecrow, and the Tin Man heading off to Brick City to see the Great Wiz (played by Wu Tang Clan member Redman). The difference between this parody and all other Wizard of Oz parodies is that: (1) The shoes "Dorothy" has on are silver platform heels (which is a reference to the Wizard of Oz book, which had Dorothy's shoes as silver rather than ruby like in the popular film version), and (2) The whole thing turns out to be a thought in the woman's head as she's being insulted by the bouncer, averting the But You Were There, and You, and You trope (and referencing "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge"'s ending in which everything the protagonist did was just an extended fantasy), and the woman enters the club unnoticed.
