The stereotype of the Romani as dishonest has been so prevalent that exonyms like "gypsy" and "Zigeuner" connote it. They are depicted as living off theft, scams, and selling fraudulent fortune telling and magic cures. Some works even depict them kidnapping children. Older Than Steam, the stereotype goes back centuries and is especially common in older works. To a lesser extent, it is also associated with other nomadic groups such as Irish Travellers even if they're unrelated to the Romani. For once, this stereotype actually originates from an actual facet of Romani culture, albeit a completely innocent one in actuality. Namely that they originally only considered something to be personal property for as long as it remained on one's person. Keep in mind that this is no longer the case with actual Romani people, however. Note also that the word "gypsy", though commonly used in a lot of media, and accepted by some Romani, is considered by others as an ethnic slur. Old World of Darkness: The basic stock for members of the Ravnos Vampire Clan are the Romani. Their clan discipline is making illusions, and they are one of the few clans who prefer the open road to city strongholds (though unlike Gangrel, they seldom have friends amongst the Were). They are also mistrusted by the more citybound kindred, and often accused of any petty acts of larceny when the Sabbat or Giovanni isn't handy. It didn't help that the clan's curse was a compulsion to break taboos, which was outright characterized in earlier editions as a tendency towards crime and vice. As of the Fifth Edition of Vampire: The Masquerade, the Ravnos no longer conform to this trope, being recharacterized as compulsive Thrill Seekers who wander the earth because they are cursed by their undead blood to do so, and are no longer explicitly associated with any specific ethnic group or culture. White Wolf even published an entire supplement devoted to the Romani, World of Darkness: Gypsies, which leaned hard into every single stereotype. The book is now considered something of an Old Shame for the game line. |

Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft: The game has a long history of this trope in the form of the Vistani, a Romani-inspired Fantasy Counterpart Culture. In the setting's debut form, the module I6: Castle Ravenloft, the proto-Vistani are simply called "gypsies", and are characterized as a clan of wagon-using human nomads who have been forcibly bound into the service of the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich. They hate Strahd, but they fear him too much to actively resist him, and so they serve him for unknown reasons. As a result, "gypsies" are one of the potentially hostile foes that players may have to fight as they explore the castle and its surroundings. There is also a mandatory sequence where the players visit the "gypsy camp" and get their fortune told by the "gypsy seer", Madame Eva, which is used to determine the randomly generated aspects of the adventure. When the setting version of Ravenloft debuted in 2nd edition, the Vistani were given their now-iconic name and expanded upon as a mysterious race of mist-traveling, caravan-dwelling nomads who clearly know far more about the mysterious Demiplane of Dread than they share with others. They are described as having an in-universe reputation as being not only thieves, kidnappers and willing agents of evil, but also powerful wielders of dark sorcery. The reality is that, whilst there certainly are Vistani who live down to their negative reputation, they are mostly just isolationists who want nothing to do with other races, though they do have genuine magical powers, in the form of their signature Evil Eye, being able to leave the Demiplane at will, and being able to use Divination without impediment. They even got their own sourcebook, Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani, which fully fleshed out their Fantasy Counterpart Culture, whilst a playable offshoot in the form of the Half-Vistani appeared in the final 2nd edition iteration of the setting. It's noted that amongst the Vistani tribes, the Corvara live down to the Vistani's evil reputation the most; having no unique stand-out skills and being inferior to all of the other tribes in terms of their specialties, they have largely chosen to embrace theft, grift and peddling vices — animal fighting matches, freakshows, and the sale of alcohol, drugs, and black market goods — to provide their families with financial support. The most iconic of the outright evil Vistani are the Radanavich clan, who were willing to kidnap a human boy to become the "bride" of a vampire in exchange for payment. This led to their inadvertently inspiring Dr. Rudolph van Richten to take up the cause of the monster hunter when they stole his son Erasmus for this — and also led to their deaths at the doctor's hands. 3rd edition saw two different versions of the Vistani. The Wizards of the Coast-produced "Expedition to Castle Ravenloft", a reinvention of the original I6 module, brought the Vistani back to their original incarnation as bandits in service to Count Strahd, but dropped as much of the "gypsy" motif as it could, reimagining them as a newly-formed bandit clan made up of humans and halflings in league with a cursed seer. The 3rd edition continuation of the Ravenloft setting, done by Sword & Sorcery Studios, continued with the Vistani lore presented in "Van Richten's Guide to the Vistani". 4th edition saw another reimagining of the Vistani, this time as a planes-traveling nomadic society rather than a singular ethnicity, and with no specific ties to Ravenloft. These Vistani were characterized as fully heroic individuals, and even playable without needing to take the now-forgotten Half-Vistani race. The most overtly "Gypsy" element to their lore was their retained focus on the Evil Eye, with the Vistani feats providing various ways of broadcasting magic through the user's eyes. 5th edition first saw the Vistani return in the module "Curse of Count Strahd", an Updated Re Release of I6: Castle Ravenloft. Here, they were presented as a kind of blend of their 1st edition and 2nd edition elements, being largely retreads of their 1e incarnations, but maintaining the Vistani name and evil eye powers of their 2e selves. A social media backlash denouncing these Vistani as racist stereotypes saw first a sensitivity-based re-make of the module, and then led to a heavy redevelopment of the Vistani in the 5e campaign book for Ravenloft: Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. This incarnation goes out of its way to present the negative stereotypes of the Vistani as unjustified and baseless, even reimagining the Radanaviches as human traffickers who pretended to be Vistani to use their fearsome reputation as cover. It also incorporates the idea of the Vistani being a multi-racial society linked by common customs rather than a singular racial ethnicity from 4th edition. The last Ravenloft iteration of 2nd edition, "Domains of Dread", included a new Rogue-type class called the Gypsy, only accessible to humans, half-elves, and half-Vistani. Although considered a Rogue classnote in 2e, the modern "Rogue" class was called the "Thief", and "Rogue" was a broad category of classes that included the Thief, the Bard, and the Gypsy the gypsy actually had no innate affinity for roguish skills unless the player was a multiclassed Gypsy/Thief. Instead, it was more of a squishy gish, having limited access to armor even for a Rogue, but gaining access to a small pool of 1st to 4th level Divination spells (and to all magic items that use Divination magic) and being master knife-fighters Greyhawk: The Rhennee are a nomadic human ethnicity implied to be actual Romani who were somehow stranded on Oerth and decided to just make the best of it. The biggest difference is that the Rhennee are a river-dwelling people who sail the lakes and streams of the Flanaess... though there are a Rhennee offshoot called the Attloi who still use the traditional caravans. The two people look down on each other, the Rhennee dismissing the Attloi for not joining them on the water and the Attloi dismissing the Rhennee for not truly preserving their ancestral ways. Rhennee are highly distrusted throughout the Flanaess and have a reputation as thieves, swindlers, liars and con-artists, leading to an abundance of negative stereotypes and active anti-Rhennee prejudice — Rhennee riverboats are often confronted with petty cruelties such as being ordered to pay extra taxes, prohibited from using the trading areas, or being punished for lacking local fishing permits. Anti-Rhennee sentiment is especially prominent in the Duchy of Urnst. Of course... all the hostility might be largely because Rhennee social traditions dictate that lying, cheating, stealing from and deceiving others is no crime if done to non-Rhennee. Spelljammer: The Aperusa are usually in roles of harmless entertainers, salvage scavengers, petty thieves or scammers, or at most not-too-brave Lovable Rogue. They even travel on unarmed (and patchwork) ships. On the exotic side, they're slightly magic-resistant and immune to mind-reading, but can't have Psychic Powers. They also have an extremely misogynistic culture; men are the brains and the brawns while women do all the work and make babies, men get first pick at the loot, a widower can remarry but a widow must stay chaste, etc., and the menfolk in particular love to take advantage of non-Aperusa women who are foolish enough to fall for stories of the romanticism of the Aperusa lifestyle. Dragon magazine #93 adventure "The Gypsy Train" thoroughly describes a band of Gypsies, including complete character descriptions and stats. The Gypsies are stated to be "light-fingered", including stealing things from PCs. The AD&D 2nd Edition supplement The Complete Bard's Handbook has the Gypsy-Bard kit, which can be used with bard characters. Gypsies are members of a clan, are considered to be thieves by non-Gypsies (because they feel free to take anything that's not on someone else's person, due to their own culture believing all goods are communal properties), travel using horse-drawn carts and wagons, entertain non-Gypsies with song and dance, have a gift for dealing with animals, can be Fortune Tellers and sometimes call themselves a king or queen. |

The basic stock for members of the Ravnos Vampire Clan are the Romani. Their clan discipline is making illusions, and they are one of the few clans who prefer the open road to city strongholds (though unlike Gangrel, they seldom have friends amongst the Were). They are also mistrusted by the more citybound kindred, and often accused of any petty acts of larceny when the Sabbat or Giovanni isn't handy. It didn't help that the clan's curse was a compulsion to break taboos, which was outright characterized in earlier editions as a tendency towards crime and vice. As of the Fifth Edition of Vampire: The Masquerade, the Ravnos no longer conform to this trope, being recharacterized as compulsive Thrill Seekers who wander the earth because they are cursed by their undead blood to do so, and are no longer explicitly associated with any specific ethnic group or culture. | |

Conan the Barbarian: The world of the Hyborian Age is supposed to be a distant era of our own past. With this as the base, many of the nations and peoples of this world are explained to be distant ancestors of ethnic groups from our current age. The gypsies would find their ancient lineage during this era on the nations of Zingara and Zamora. The Zingarans are mostly painted on a positive light or at least no more negatively than their neighboring kingdoms, except for one detail. The trait they are most famous for are their fleets of corsairs, which get paid generously by the crown for disrupting trade and stealing ships. In resume, they are mostly portrayed as pirates with a fancier name. The Zamorans, on the other hand, are constantly described as decadent and evil, whose capital city of Shadizar is usually described as "the Wicked", and one of their main gods is set to be Bel, the God of Thieves. The Interns: The main focus of Sophia and Alexei's plot in Season 11 Episode 2 is that Alexei stubbornly believes what all Romani are thieves, while Sophia thinks he is a bigot. In the end, Sophia turns out to be right: When Romani guy asks Sophia whether he and his relatives may visit Sophia's patient, Alexei warns her to be careful around this guy, or he may try to rob her, because, you know, they all are thugs! She dismisses it as his prejudice. When Sophia's patient's relatives finally appear, Alexei has an Imagine Spot about gypsy tabor stealing everything they could find, ranging from money from pockets to fish from an aquarium, hospital's drug supply and even patient from a gurney. He asks Sophia to check her pockets to see whether they robbed her, and it turns out they silently put some money in; when Alexei tried to claim what money must be fake, Sophia accuses him of being paranoid. Alexei's patient (who is just as prejudiced) starts suspecting that the Romani hides something under mattress. When the guy leaves with Sophia, Alexei decides to check himself — and notices several golden neck-chains, two expensive smartphones, and two wristwatches. He immediately jumps into the conclusion of what it must be stolen and takes it away. Sophia calls him a moron. Then their actual owner appears and not only confirms what they belong to him but also justifies why he needs them. Alexei's attempts to find weak points in the patient's story, despite Sophia outright telling him to just shut up already, only makes Alexei look even more like a fool. |

Greyhawk: The Rhennee are a nomadic human ethnicity implied to be actual Romani who were somehow stranded on Oerth and decided to just make the best of it. The biggest difference is that the Rhennee are a river-dwelling people who sail the lakes and streams of the Flanaess... though there are a Rhennee offshoot called the Attloi who still use the traditional caravans. The two people look down on each other, the Rhennee dismissing the Attloi for not joining them on the water and the Attloi dismissing the Rhennee for not truly preserving their ancestral ways. Rhennee are highly distrusted throughout the Flanaess and have a reputation as thieves, swindlers, liars and con-artists, leading to an abundance of negative stereotypes and active anti-Rhennee prejudice — Rhennee riverboats are often confronted with petty cruelties such as being ordered to pay extra taxes, prohibited from using the trading areas, or being punished for lacking local fishing permits. Anti-Rhennee sentiment is especially prominent in the Duchy of Urnst. Of course... all the hostility might be largely because Rhennee social traditions dictate that lying, cheating, stealing from and deceiving others is no crime if done to non-Rhennee. | |
