Often, a Super Hero with a Secret Identity faces situations where he must change into his superhero identity, and do so without revealing the identity. This calls for a Secret-Identity Change Trick, and fast. Usually, the superhero will try any excuse and/or use any situation to his advantage in order to change, such as ducking into a telephone booth to swap outfits. On film, such an act allows for an easy way to have the audience understand where and how the hero changes without needing to explicitly show it (Scene X: Civilian enters phone booth. Camera stops rolling, actor leaves booth, changes clothes offstage, re-enters booth, camera re-starts. Scene X.1: Hero leaves phone booth). Bruce Wayne Held Hostage is a specific situation where this may be necessary. See also We Need a Distraction. If the hero isn't very good at it, he may claim he needs to go iron his dog. |

The Flash: After his identity became secret again, Wally West had to start doing this sort of thing. In one instance, when there's a problem at a social gathering of some sort that he and Linda were attending, he does his standard take-off-so-fast-no-one-sees-it routine, leaving a note in Linda's hand along the lines of "make my usual excuses," thus indicating that (unlike some characters' off-the-cuff and often strange excuses for running off) they'd quite possibly discussed and planned for such situations. Barry Allen came up with a pretty cool trick: By moving at high speed, he could blur back and forth between costumes so quickly that, to the normal human eye, it looked like the Flash and Barry were in the same room at the same time. Wally borrowed it a couple of times when his identity was still secret. |

In the live-action version of Wonder Woman with Linda Carter, Diana Prince was always running off as if she was scared, only to return as Wonder Woman. Examples include: In one episode, terrorists are holding everyone hostage. Everyone is standing there with their hands in the air. Diana Prince (a supposedly highly-trained secret agent of the IADC at this point) takes off running through the crowd. Her actions don't cause panic or get anyone else to flee and the terrorists don't bother shooting her, although they had the ability to do so. In another episode, aliens have landed in a field. Steve Trevor, Diana Prince, and a bunch of soldiers are sent out to meet with them. When Diana realizes she could do more as Wonder Woman, she casually walks away only to return to the exact same spot dressed as Wonder Woman. No one realizes that this tall, attractive brunette walked away, changed clothes and returned. Despite Diana's cowardice, she never gets in trouble for running away from danger, essentially abandoning her job and endangering civilians at the same time. |

Let My People Grow!: Superman exploits the chaos caused by Brainiac's literally ground-shattering arrival to sneak out of a company party and change clothes. In The Leper from Krypton, Superman has been infected with an incurable alien disease. As Clark Kent, he slips into his office at night to leave a goodbye note for his friends when Lois opens the door. Clark quickly takes advantage of the darkness in his office to change clothes at Super-Speed before Lois sees his greenish, marred face and realizes Clark Kent is Superman. Superman and Spider-Man: Hulk is approaching Metropolis, but Morgan Edge wants Clark Kent to cover the news as his anchorman. However, Clark's super-vision has already spotted the green giant, so he uses a ventriloquism trick to make his co-workers hear someone screaming the Hulk is out on the street. Right away, Clark stomps the floor tough enough to make the building tremble, causing Edge to order everybody to evacuate the building. As everybody is rushing towards the stairs, Clark easily slips into a storeroom to change clothes. "Superman vs. Muhammad Ali": As Ali is squaring off against an alien who has just shown up and shoved Lois Lane aside, Clark Kent mumbles he is going to look for a police, and sneaks into a nearby alley to change clothes. In Superman/Masters of the Universe crossover "From Eternia With Death", Prince Adam needs an excuse to change into He-Man and meet up with Sorceress, so he pretends to be annoyed at Teela ruining his evening (when she stopped a bar brawl) and dashes off quickly. In crossover "Fate Is The Killer": When Zodac appears and Teela suggests Adam to get out and leave the fighting to the royal guards, the prince pretends to agree, and leaves to transform into He-Man. The Super Duel In Space: Clark Kent and other reports have been invited to fly in the Columbus spaceship during the first manned space voyage. When they are attacked by Brainiac, though, Clark needs an excuse to abandon the spaceship, so that he picks a spacesuit and a jetpack, pretends he has becomes frightened enough to try to fly back to Earth on his own, and leaps out of a hatch. Once he is out of sight, Clark changes clothes. "Brainiac Rebirth": Clark Kent notices Brainiac's ship approaching Earth right when his boss is berating him about his unexplained absences and ordering him to getting down to the studio. Clark is not in the mood to come up with some good lie, so he makes a show of snapping back at Morgan Edge and storming off and into his own office, where he changes clothes. |

The first time he changes, he goes into Kit's locker to "make a call" and comes out wearing his costume. Later, when Craig's staff is stolen in the middle of an awards ceremony, JP suddenly declares that he has to go to the bathroom. Spider-Man: This happens all but constantly when Peter Parker has a secret ID. His running off every time there's trouble generally makes him look like a coward and causes him to miss all kinds of engagements. Probably his best excuse came in The Spectacular Spider-Man: "A green guy is holding my boss hostage, and he wants me to come take pictures. Otherwise I might get fired." Spectacular also subverted the trope by exposing the lie once (though not the reasons for making it); After Doc Connors becomes the Lizard, Peter makes the lame excuse as usual and everyone assumes he's just freaked out - but the next morning everyone sees Spidey and the Lizard in the paper with the byline "Photos by Peter Parker", making him look uncompassionate and selfish. A classic subversion of this came in the issue where a D-list villain attacked Peter in his apartment while Mary Jane was there and he had to shove her into another room while he dealt with said villain. After he runs the guy off and is scrambling for another lame excuse to give MJ about what happened, she admits to Peter that she figured it out a long time ago. The two undisputed kings of this trope, Spider-Man and Superman, had an opportunity in the late 1990s to perform this on each other. During the massive Marvel/DC crossover, where characters from either universe get cosmically transported to the opposite universe. IE: Spidey winds up in DC, Robin winds up in Marvel, etc., freelance photographer Peter Parker gets assigned to work with reporter Clark Kent. Naturally, while they're out covering a story, something goes down. Spider-sense goes off, super-hearing picks up trouble. Despite their practice at keeping secrets, they both start an excuse and don't even finish it. In Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man, Peter and MJ are taking a stroll on the way to the theater when Peter notices Doctor Octopus' blimp flying overhead. He mumbles "'Scuse me, MJ — feeling sick — gotta get some water —!" before dashing off. Also played with during one issue of The Amazing Spider-Man (Dan Slott): Peter, in his role as CEO of Parker Industries, is talking to Max Modell when there's a villain attack. Peter tries to think of an excuse and Max teasingly suggests he has to go and take pictures for the Bugle. Peter starts to agree and then remembers he doesn't do that any more. Max instead suggests that maybe he wants to go and contact PI employee Spider-Man. Peter goes along with this one, but realises that if Max doesn't know, he at least strongly suspects. |
