In the sequel of Tales of Symphonia, Lloyd will, in the same place, and depending on a player choice: declare love for one of his female friends, or have a romantic chat with one of the characters (the others are less romantic, but definitely shippy) (as long as it's with a female— all of the male options are made quite clear that they're platonic only), when he finally joins you at the end of the game. Lampshaded and subverted in Tales of the Abyss. All of the girls (and Ion) discuss how romantic the snowy city of Keterburg is and how lovely it would be to walk with a gentleman through the snow. Unfortunately, Jade is, off visiting his sister, Guy is terrified of being close to women and the fact that all of the women in town like to keep close is driving him crazy, and Luke's outfit has a bare stomach which is now freezing. Naruto: Defied and Subverted with Naruto and Sakura in the Five Kage Summit arc. Sakura spends half of Chapter 469 trying to convince Naruto that she loves him and that she loves Sasuke no more, claiming that she now loves him for the hero he's become after he defeated Pain rather than the "mischievous, prankster loser" that he always was and always will be, all in a snowfield with the snow falling softly. Then on the very last panel of that chapter, Naruto rejects her outright by telling her that he hates people who lie to themselves. The text on that panel even Lampshades it: "In the falling snow..." Rurouni Kenshin uses the trope twice: During the Jinchuu/Memorial arc, Kenshin and Tomoe share a physically and emotionally intimate scene with each other in their cabin as it is snowing. (With the OAV being more explicit about the first part.) However, much like the case in Berserk, it was later mixed with death. In a rare villainous case, it's used as Ship Tease between the teenage orphan Tsubaki and her protector, the gentle and friendly monk Anji Yukyuzan, whom she has a huge Precocious Crush on. She's hurt her ankle and Anji carries her on his back towards the temple they live in, and as this happens she promises him that no matter what, she will always be with him, which can be easily seen as a sort-of Love Confession... However, this is a case of Foregone Conclusion, because Anji is already known as The Destroyer. He used to be a sweet, caring guy determined to help the poor, but when the new government killed his adopted children when the government tried to outlaw Buddhism, and he did not take it so well. For extra effect, the snow scene happens literally right before he finds all of his children (Tsubaki included) burned to death by government agents. |
