Shawn dominated nearly two decades of Match of the Year up until his retirement. Tragically averted when Shawn was finally lured back into the ring for one more match at WWE's execrable "Crown Jewel" event in 2018. Teaming with old friend Triple H for a tag match against the Brothers of Destruction one more time, Shawn showed painfully visible ring rust from his 8 years of retirement, although he at least didn't totally embarrass himself (in fact, he was generally considered to look pretty good, but for a man considered to have been possibly the greatest worker of all time "pretty good" is still a hell of a step down). Combined with Trips injuring himself early in the match and 'Taker and Kane just looking terrible (forcing Shawn to effectively carry the entire match, something he just didn't have in him anymore, although he broke his nose and forehead trying) the match ended up a tragedy that was considered one of the worst of the year, and Shawn swore he would never repeat the mistake by coming out of retirement again, no matter how much money he was offered.

His return match against Darby Allin at All Out 2021 proved that not even 7 years out of the ring and a failed MMA career could stop CM Punk from being a top-tier professional wrestler, but as his run has continued, while Punk was still undefeated for a time (and even his first loss there to MJF came through cheating), he would often be struggling to put away opponents who would normally be considered far beneath the level of someone who calls themself "the Best in the World" (e.g. QT Marshall, a guy not particularly portrayed as threatening in AEW). Punk is clearly affected by this and is desperate to prove he can still keep up with the new generation of wrestlers after so long away from the ring. A verbal example would have to be his instantly-legendary promo-off with MJF on the November 24, 2021 episode of Dynamite. As lampshaded by MJF in this promo, Punk still proved to be a competent talker but most of his promos involved invoking a Cheap Pop and saying how happy he was to be wrestling again against whoever his opponent was, with only a single segment with Eddie Kingston showing any spark of the man that captivated the wrestling world a decade prior. Then this segment happened, where Punk allowed MJF to get his jabs in, no-sold them, and then proceeded to verbally destroy his younger rival (who is one of the greatest talkers in the industry today), proving that even with seven years out of the game, he's still the greatest wordsmith in modern-day professional wrestling.
