Then after committing the murder he plants a second, identical knife at the scene, contaminated with musk. Sure enough, the bloodhounds follow the scent to the wrong person. Thorndyke also criticises the use of bloodhounds in crime investigation (implicitly, in detective fiction) in the story, noting its advocates are thinking of the former use of bloodhounds to recapture escaped slaves in the US South - but those slaves were known individuals, whereas a criminal is usually an unknown without a recognised scent.
