Some people are just good at certain things. Sometimes they have a natural talent. Sometimes they're a prodigy from a young age. Sometimes they're The Ace and can pick up talent like nobody's business without any real struggle. However, this person who's so good at what they do isn't able to pass those skills on to any students.
In this case, the idea that all their natural talent means they have no idea how to teach someone who lacks that same amount of talent.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Maybe it's because they're so quirky that their methods for training sound like nonsense. Maybe they just can't fathom why anyone else needs to try hard at what seems easy and obvious to them. Maybe the skill is something that comes so naturally or supernaturally to them that it's impossible for them to explain how they got it in words. Or maybe they just suck at teaching.
This is a deconstruction of Strong, but Unskilled, because when you have The Gift naturally how are you going to pass along any of those skills. You didn't work for them, so honestly don't know to help someone else work for them. Never mind that teaching is a hard skill in and of itself, and that just being able to demonstrate a skill doesn't mean that you can break down the steps required to be able to use the skill.
This is a trope that could be the reason for someone being an Anti-Mentor. It could also become Apathetic Teacher if they don't bother to teach if someone doesn't have their same talent. This can also be used to compare the Technician vs. Performer, usually (but not always) in the technician's favour. It can also be compared with an Obsolete Mentor, when the teacher did have the relevant skills at some point, but either the skills or their teaching method is no longer viable, and because that training worked for them they try to use it anyway with bad results. See also Achievements in Ignorance, for when someone performs a feat that they didn't know was supposed to be impossible.

Zigzagged a little in Mushoku Tensei with Paul Greyrat. Regularly described as naturally talented with the sword he's not all that good at teaching as his grasp of sword techniques is so instinctual he can't accurately put into words what needs to be done to teach others how to do the same. Zigzagged becasue his old adventuring companion Ghislaine actually outranks him (in one particular sword-style at least) and is a much more effective teacher despite her reputation for being rather Book Dumb due to having to work out everything the hard way.

Played very darkly in Über. The only way that Maria can think of to teach the second-generation Soviet supers her unique ability to synthesize her own activation catalyst is to play out what happened to her on them, which is basically hounding and torturing them until they develop the ability themselves, or die from exhaustion and/or catalyst withdrawal.

Medaka from Medaka Box has The Gift which allows her to be the best at EVERYTHING. This however means she has absolutely no empathy when dealing with people who aren't like her, when she needs to teach a remedial course she doesn't actually teach any coursework, focusing instead on handwriting because it never occurred to her that other people wouldn't automatically know the answer.

In The Big Bang Theory episode "The Thespian Catalyst," Sheldon, a renowned theoretical physicist, is asked to be a guest lecturer for the university's top science students. Following the lecture, he believes that his lecture was a success, but the rest of the gang show him that the attendees posted on social media that despite his knowledge of theoretical physics, they didn't really learn anything because Sheldon has no idea how to teach.

Subverted in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?. When Ais, a Child Prodigy turned Teen Genius of an adventurer, agrees to help Bell train, he's initially put off by her air-headedness and can't wrap his head around what she's doing. So rather than try to explain her skills, Ais beats her techniques into Bell the hard way by sparring while pointing out all of the flaws in Bell's struggles to defend himself against a far more powerful opponent. It's brutal Training from Hell, but it works and Bell quickly becomes a much more formidable adventurer.

In the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics, Toph had something of this problem when teaching metal bending for the first time to others for a similar reason. Unlike Aang who was A: being taught just earthbending, and B: also has The Gift despite his reluctance to face things head on her usual method of tough love didn't work for her students. Sokka wasn't able to help either as his faking an emergency to make a do or die scenario didn't work. The students had to go around looking for help, and they only actually responded when they overheard that despite everything Toph really did have high hopes for them. Because of that they actually manage to figure out metal bending on their own.

When the gems try to teach Steven how to summon his weapon in Steven Universe, each of them explain how they summon their weapon but not how one learns their individual method of doing so.
This is much the same for a lot of the skills gems have because gems are born as adults and already know everything they need to know to fulfill their roles in gem society. Given this doesn't mean they can't teach skills they themselves had to learn (like Pearl who was taught how to fight).

In Chicken Run Rocky attributes this as the reason that his attempts to teach the chickens of the farm to fly are coming up short, he was gifted and they're not. In reality, chickens can't fly and his whole act as a flying rooster was him being shot out of a cannon.

In Delicious in Dungeon, Laios, a warrior by trade, once tried getting lessons in magic from his sister Falin, a talented cleric. However, Falin's grasp of magic was entirely intuitive, and as a result Laios couldn't follow her vague descriptions of "feelings" and "right moments". When Laios starts taking lessons from Marcille, an extremely by-the-book mage, he gets the hang of a basic healing spell so quickly Marcille comments that magical talent must run in his family.

Dark Skies: Prince Killian has been Marked by War God Tremon and as a result is a highly skilled warrior with Improbable Aiming Skills to boot. However, when he tries teaching Lydia, he's got a lot of problems with that because he is simply unable to put himself in a position of someone lacking any skill. His subordinates, Bercola and Sonia, who are not gifted, just well-trained and experienced, turn out to be much better teachers.
