This trope is under discussion in the Trope Repair Shop. The intersection of Rule 34, the Third Law of Gender-Bending, Trans Equals Gay, and All Gays are Promiscuous, Transgender Fetishization is the practice of placing a transgender character in a hypersexualized role, often as someone that does Fanservice better, or focuses on sexual content more candidly, than the other characters in the setting. For this trope, "Transgender" is being used as a catch-all for many different forms of gender-nonconformity, such as Crossdresser, Ambiguous Gender, Ambiguous Gender Identity, Sex Shifter or others. A form of escapism that makes transgender/gender-nonconforming characters exotic and hypersexualized, this trope can be quite the double-edged sword. On one hand, demonstrating that trans persons can be conventionally sexy goes a long way in dispelling harmful myths and discomfort with their identities. It also allows creators to push boundaries, explore sexual themes, and experiment with mature ideas, as well as encourage their audiences to do the same. Parts of the transgender community (especially those who are closeted) enjoy the trope, as it allows them to explore sexual themes through the characters. On the other hand, this trope can still degrade into exploitation with all of the associated problems and pitfalls. It can reinforce the belief that the most significant thing about LGBTQIA people is whether or not other people find them sexy or repulsive, and carries implications that trans people need to conform to conventional standards of beauty to be valid. Like other Flawless Token characters, characters that fall into this trope may be displayed as confident and sexy, but lack depth or agency. Usually, they also lack reciprocated feelings or romance aside from a Lovable Sex Maniac, or another LGBTQIA member of the cast. It can also reinforce the Stereotype that all non-heteronormative activity is sexual by nature. When abused, this trope can allow a work to seem progressive while still invoking traditional gender role tropes. In the context of transgender women, it can also come across as cynical Loophole Abuse — often an attempt to include tropes such as Ms. Fanservice or the Male Gaze without drawing accusations of sexism by using trans female characters in place of cis-female characters. As this comes from the assumption that the sexualization of male characters in general is less problematic by default than with female characters, it can carry the implication that transgender women aren't technically "real" women. If effeminate cis-male characters are involved instead, they can also used to provide feminine sex appeal while circumventing taboos such as the depiction of female nipples. This trope is extremely rare to be played for anything except laughs in the United States. The US still has huge problems with homophobia and transphobia in general, and so for the benefit of Moral Guardians, rarely will a transgender person be treated as unironically sexy. Of course, if it's not played for comedy, it's played for drama; while sex work is seen as a common profession in the trans community due to issues of finding work in other trades both during and after transitioning, the portrait of trans sex workers usually leans into a seedy sort of sensuality that makes them objects of desire with hints of pity, tragic creatures of the demimonde. In more niche (or foreign) markets, however, a blatantly fetishistic transgender character isn't that uncommon. Japan, in particular, took this trope to an extreme with the "Newhalf" sensation starting in the 1980s. This trope is Older Than Feudalism. Various ancient societies have used this trope in varying degrees, such as with the Köçek in Turkey, Onnagata in Japan or the Hijra in South Asia. However, it's also common for such groups to be both sexually desired and heavily discriminated against. One of the more negative uses of this trope occurs when it's combined with the Unsettling Gender-Reveal, as the "sexiness" of the character is twisted for the audience's disgust/amusement. Subtrope of the Third Law Of Genderbending, where a gender-bent character willingly or unwillingly embraces the stereotypes associated with their new gender. A form of Flawless Token, because it assigns a quality that superficially seems "good" but in such an exaggerated way that the character often becomes a device or object. Related to Attractive Bent-Gender, Bifauxnen, Everybody Wants the Hermaphrodite and the Third Law of Gender-Bending. Also related to Elfeminate, whereas elves are considered universally beautiful and attractive because of the ambiguity of their gender. |

Tokyo Ghoul: Fans are divided on whether Mutsuki's (implied to be either genderfluid, a trans man, or a crossdressing woman) moments of being depicted in little to no clothing or girls clothes is fanservice or fan disservice considering their increasing Sanity Slippage and the contexts of the situations they're in, one in which they stabbed and assaulted Uta's (as Haise) corpse while half-naked and declared their love for Haise. However, some fans were pleased when Mutsuki was drawn in woman's clothing, as a Cat Girl, and a bikini in illustrations, the manga, and the calendar. Also many fans find them very gorgeous and to clean up nicely when dressed in a suit. In particular they are popular among both men and women, with one man named Torso having a sexual attraction to them to the point of masturbation and wanting to marry them. They are misgendered as a woman and objectified and seen as a Lust Object by Torso who feels he is Entitled to Have You. There is an ambiguous situation regarding Suzuya's gender identity as they were raised as a girl and castrated by their ghoul mother (who is stated to have been born male but isn't attractive unless you like heavy set trans women/crossdressers with revealing clothing) and occasionally is shown looking stunning in women's clothing and attracts people of both genders. Kaneki/Sasaki is considered by some fans to be genderfluid, as he gets a couple scenes where he is portrayed as a woman or made to cross-dress whether for cosplay, as part of an April Fools' Day comic, portraying Cinderella, accidentally getting a female uniform when going undercover with Touka into the CCG, or willingly cross-dressing as "Sasako" as part of a mission. He makes for a beautiful girl, and his innocence and Real Men Wear Pink qualities add to the effect. There are also hints of Kaneki being genderfluid or intersex, as Nishiki and other characters comment on his androgynous smell,note Rize's strong female ghoul smell from her kakuhou that was implanted into him and his underlying human male smell his effeminate behaviors/qualities,note started as a skinny weak bookworm, skilled with makeup and fashion and in having to act/sound like a woman for an undercover mission, being compared to a woman in a poem, doesn't like to fight, acts like an adoring fanboy when he first sees the fellow male Tsukiyama, had Hide to fight his battles/stand up for him in the past, does things like hitting Nishiki with his bag if he does fight for his life (which makes Nishiki mockingly call him a chick), Furuta emasculating him (by saying he has a baby face, calling him "my dear Kaneki" and trying to be the alpha male enemy), and his occasional interactions with men and women scenes where he is almost submissive or is beat up, which he sometimes doesn't fight back against due to his Extreme Doormat nature his constant Ship Tease moments with other characters regardless of gender, his association with calico cats,note which are almost always female, the exception being a calico with XXY chromosomes: an intersex cat that leans more towards the male spectrum and Haise/Kaneki's associations with the fenghuang (or phoenix),note Originally the bird was two, the feng 鳳 being the male bird and huang 凰 being the female. The fenghuang is a combination of a man and woman but is the representative figure of the Empress (the tarot card suits Kaneki as well). Buddhanote A man so beautiful that he was sometimes mistaken for a woman alongside his other androgynous qualities; nobody really minded his androgynous appearance because he was so beautiful and wise. and Odin.note Who not only gained an immense amount of knowledge after hanging from Yggdrasil for 9 nights, but also became intersex as well as fertile — as in, he could birth his own children. The argument continues to this day over the meaning of 'fertile' in Odin's monologue after coming down from the Tree, but the majority conclude that for the time period, the word 'fertile' meant 'child-bearing' and womanly'. If that isn't convincing, keep in mind that Loki was a male god who gave birth and was the mother to three different beings. Kaneki is also considered quite a pretty Bishōnen who keeps racking up admirers, some of them of the Villainous Crush variety. He doesn't mind being referred to by the French term "Maman" for mother by Saiko. There are also quite a few scenes where he's dressed in outfits that showcase how built he is, and he has many shirtless/nude/shower scenes, and even a sex scene. |

Yuureitou: Official art is weird about this. The chapters' covers would make you assume that Tetsuo is an androgynous woman and often present him in fanservicey poses or limited clothing. He wants to stay young and beautiful and crossdresses, presenting himself as a woman a few times and looks gorgeous if a bit unhinged. |

Ménage à 3: The only actual trans woman in the series, Senna, is considered one of the most beautiful women in her world, probably rivaled only by the likes of Di Di. This applies both in-universe and out. Unfortunately, she is portrayed with pretty much every negative transphobic stereotype about trans women there is, including rape (she penetrates the male lead anally while he was too drunk to even properly understand what was going on), a moment that is portrayed as a double standard rape as comedy scene without any consequences of any kind. This caused major criticism from real trans folk about portraying the only trans character as an egotistical, obnoxious, self-absorbed diva with a fetish for anally deflowering drunk men, which writer/artist Giselle responded to by arguing that every character in her Sex Comedy is just as bad. However, the story arc in question specifically characterized Senna as being more selfish, more vain, and more sexually forward than most other characters. So whether or not Senna qualifies as this really depends on how you view trans women to begin with. Sticky Dilly Buns: Angel/Angie is genderfluid and alternates between presenting as female and male. They are gay when male and straight when female. ContraPoints: The trope is discussed in the "Autogynephilia" video, in which she points to J. Michael Bailey's The Man Who Would Be Queen as popularizing the trope for modern audiences. In the book, Bailey and his assistants refer to trans women as unnaturally attractive (to the point of Uncanny Valley), and with a natural affinity toward sex work. The negative implications of this trope when combined with Unsettling Gender-Reveal are also examined in her video "Are Tr*ps Gay?", where she dissects the homonymous meme (popularized in Western anime fan communities) and the stereotype it promotes that trans women "deceive" men into having sex with them, the implication being that trans women aren't really women. As she explains, this normalizes long-existing beliefs that result in cis heterosexual men reacting to their own attraction to a trans woman as though it were a threat to their own heterosexuality, leading to the murder and general lack of safety of real trans women in their daily lives (especially poor trans women of color). She also goes further to talk about the popularity of trans women-fetishizing porn with heterosexual male audiences in anti-LGBT states in the US. Not only she uses this to demonstrate that heterosexual men are attracted to trans women, but to explain that the fetishization and dehumanizing representation of trans women in porn (from which cis men often first find out about trans women) also results in a country "full of people who will jerk off to you, but won't give you rights". |

In the shared universe of the Final Fight and Street Fighter franchises, Poison fits this trope. This was an Unbuilt Trope according to the common urban legend of her origin. Poison (and her counterpart, Roxy) were originally created as female adversaries in the Final Fight series, and to provide blatant fanservice. But when the game was ported over to the SNES console, Nintendo of America had a problem with violence against women. So the solution they settled on was to say the two were trans women... because that makes them okay to beat up. The truth is that Poison was always intended to be genuinely transgender. Her concept art had her labeled as "newhalf", which is a somewhat derogatory Japanese term for trans people, similar to "shemale" in English. Regardless, she has always been trans. See this documentary for details. In a general sense, The New '10s have seen a resurgence of the Poison character, thanks to her inclusion in both Street Fighter X Tekken and Ultra Street Fighter IV. Aside from Juri, she's the most provocative character in the setting, and aside from Elena, wears by far the least clothing. Even her fighting style is somewhat based on a dominatrix. In X Tekken, she had very little personality or story beyond that and her status as a trans woman was often alluded to or joked about, but this was heavily toned down in Ultra and she gained some Hidden Depths in her winquotes, though she kept the fighting style for gameplay purposes. |
