In fiction, there's a tendency for high school and college athletes to not be very bright and for top students to be poor in physical challenges. This trope is concerned with the latter. This belief likely stems from the idea that focusing too much on studies doesn't give the nerd enough time to take care of his physical condition. They may develop a Geek Physique as a result. Often, a story with this type of character will have a more sporty character try and teach them how to play sports. Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_3'); })If this character is paired up with the Dumb Jock, you have Brains and Brawn. If the character is paired with a jock father, you have Jock Dad, Nerd Son. Compare Squishy Wizard, for the close equivalent in fantasy settings. Contrast Academic Athlete. Examples: |

In Runaways, Gert is possibly the smartest member of the team, but years of disdaining sports or any physical activity has made her such a poor combatant that she once got utterly thrashed by a thirteen-year-old with no actual superpowers.

In the Looney Tunes short "Little Boy Boo", Foghorn Leghorn tries to bond with little Egghead, Jr. over a game of baseball. Egghead, despite being a science genius, has no idea how to play — he tries to eat the ball when Foggy hands it to him — but after some calculations, he is able to hit the ball right down Foghorn's throat.

In Harry Potter, Hermione does brilliantly in school, but is rubbish at Quidditch, the wizarding sport played on broomsticks. By contrast, Fred, George, Ron, and Harry all do about average in school, but are all on the Quidditch team.

The Big Bang Theory: A Running Gag is that the guys, all accomplished scientists, have no aptitude for sports. (Sheldon does have a good knowledge of football due to having a father who coached his school's team, but otherwise has no interest in it.) This is often contrasted with Penny, who is not outstandingly athletic, but is still better at sports than they are. The episode that probably demonstrates this best is "The Rothman Disintegration", where Sheldon and Sitcom Archnemesis Kripke compete over who gets a newly vacated office. Since they're not in equal terms intellectually, they then decide to compete on the one field they are equally bad at: sports. They head to the basketball court and play a game of horse; when neither one manages to score one basket, they switch to a free-throw contest; and after not sinking a single one for forty-five minutes, they settle for who can bounce the highest, which Sheldon wins. |

Drake & Josh: Josh is one of the smartest people in his school, rivaled academically only by his rival, Mindy. He also chronically sucks at sports — in the pilot, he only barely passed his one-day karate course and was still immediately knocked out in a fight, and when he tried out for the football team, he failed so badly he got stuck as the equipment manager.

My Hero Academia: At first, Izuku is wicked smart in his studies, but lacks the athleticism needed to be a hero — especially compared to his rival, the Genius Bruiser Bakugo. It takes months of training with All Might to even stand a chance, and even then, he's still last-in-his-class. As the series progresses, however, Izuku becomes far more athletic.

A Song of Ice and Fire has Samwell Tarly who doesn't want to fight and is not good at it either which got his father to disown him for not being manly enough and send him to the Night's Watch. However, Samwell is book-smart and has a huge interest in the history of Westeros as his first interest is to become a Maester. His intellect makes up for his contribution for the Night's Watch in finding ways to defeat the Others and he is the first to kill one.

In The Stepfather III, one of the first signs that the Villain Protagonist is losing faith in his latest family is how the wheelchair bound son of his latest single mother target, is a nerd who is interested in criminal justice and investigations, and not interested in sports, which the Stepfather believes all good American boys should be into. The kicker? the boy is not really handicapped and let himself get weak enough to where he can't walk, out of the emotional impact of his parents getting divorced. This becomes crucial during the climax of the film.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: In "Common Ground", Quibble Pants is a fanboy of the Daring Do book series who particularly likes the more intellectual aspects of the series as opposed to the action sequences. Quibble tries to impress his athletic future stepdaughter by learning how to play buckball, and fails because of his extreme lack of athletic ability. In My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Friendship Games, this becomes an overseen flaw of Cinch's plan to win the Friendship Games. Cinch blackmails Human Twilight into participating to ensue Crystal Prep would win the competition. Twilight aces the academic portion, since she's the smartest student at Crystal Prep. However, come the athletic portion, Twilight causes Crystal Prep to fall spectacularly behind. If Applejack hadn't stepped in to help Twilight with the target out of a sense of fair play, Canterlot High would've won uncontested.
