They've Outrun the Fireball, survived the Death Course, ridden the Rollercoaster Mine and, amazingly enough, gone through it with their extremities intact, making them bonafide Action Survivors. While the other characters are catching their breath and trying to regain their bearings, one of them quips, "Well, wasn't that fun?", "Let's do it again!", or some other enthusiastic rejoinder. Depending on the speaker, this could be either a sincere statement or old-fashioned sarcasm. A popular way to end a Chase Scene or an Indy Escape. The Deadpan Snarker, Lovable Rogue, or Nightmare Fetishist is the odds-on favorite for delivering the line. Opposite of I'm Not Doing That Again. Bridge of Birds: In Barry Hughart's The Story of the Stone (sequel to Bridge of Birds), four characters go over an improbably long series of rocks and other nearly lethal water hazards while escaping from enemies via a river. The narrator (known as "Number Ten Ox") and the story's sensible heroine are forced to sit on the Old Master ("Master Li Kao") and the ridiculously oversexed sound-master Moon Boy until they stop demanding to go back and shoot the rapids again. In the third book, Eight Skilled Gentlemen, Master Li Kao has apparently learned his lesson; after shooting through yet another series of water-filling tunnels, Master Li simply looks at them wistfully and comments that the man who could re-create that experience would make a fortune. |
