A classic Stock Phrase with a number of familiar variations. Generally it's a witty remark on the part of the protagonist, when the villain starts listing all the good things they've done. Sometimes it's played for comedy, and the villain (or whoever's holding the Idiot Ball) comes up with good, concise, and valid answers. The latter version tends to happen more in pastiche. Can be the Lampshade Hanging if the Ungrateful Bastard is called on their behavior. Might be a sign that the character is outliving their usefulness or is not appreciated back at home. Compare It's All About Me, which has the same self-centered connotations. |

The Lament Series (ChaoticNeutral): During Chloé's Lament, Chloé questions what Marinette ever did for her. Even after having it spelled out in explicit detail how Marinette repeatedly went well out of her way to try and help her long-time tormentor out, such as trying to help her repair her relationship with her neglectful mother or giving her several opportunities to redeem herself as Queen Bee, Chloé dismisses all of her efforts.

The Karma of Lies: Adrien, Alya and the rest of Marinette's classmates take her generosity and support completely for granted. When she learns that they've donated all the clothes she made for them to Lila's Fake Charity drive, Adrien "reassures" her that she can always make more, since "they're just clothes". This only gets worse after they learn that their "everyday Ladybug" was actually Ladybug all along, with Alya particularly convinced that being Marinette's "bestie" entitles her to exclusive interviews and access to the Fox Miraculous.

In The Walking Dead, this is Kenny's largest flaw. No matter how badly you stick your neck out for him, he is incredibly fickle and will turn on you the second you don't side with him on so much as one (1) single thing. Luann: Toni's brother Jonah treats her as a free daycare service for his daughter Shannon that he can call upon anytime he likes, without advance notice. Whenever there's any kind of conflict that comes up, he expects her to cancel and reschedule things on her end — even when she was busy preparing for her own wedding! And when she finally tried standing up for herself, suggesting he needed to start taking responsibility for his own life, he fires back that he'd have an easier time doing so if he'd ever receieved any help from her. The opportunistic bastard also dumped Shannon off on his future in-laws the moment they met, declaring that "Toni will pick her up in a few hours."

A recurring phrase in The Silence of the Lambs is "gratitude has a short half-life." Ardelia Mapp first says it to Clarice Starling as a warning that she risks falling behind on her Academy training while helping Jack Crawford on the Buffalo Bill case, and a reminder to use that gratitude while she can to avoid being held back. Crawford himself repeats the advice after the case has been solved and the would-be victim - the daughter of a US Senator - has been rescued. He points out that the Senator could be a useful ally to Clarice if she's willing to take advantage of her goodwill.

Hell Is a Martial Artist: Played for Drama when Ranma lists out all of the things he's done for the sake of Akane and her family, asking her just what it will take for her to stop Easily Condemning and assuming the worst of him. Akane blows off the reminder and tells him point-blank that she will never, EVER give him the benefit of the doubt. It doesn't matter what he does, how strong the evidence for his innocence might be, how weak the accusation is — she will ALWAYS assume the worst and treat him accordingly, and there is absolutely NOTHING he can do to change this.
