Traditionally, vampires were seen as mindless monsters- a corpse reanimated by demons and little better than a Flesh-Eating Zombie. Then came Gothic Horror and the vampire was reimagined as a wealthy, suave, aristocratic seducer with the powers of the night at its beck and call, but firmly villainous. When vampires started being re-re-imagined as more nuanced and less evil characters, writers stumbled upon a problem- how do you make a blood-drinking Serial Killer somewhat moral? Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Sometimes, a vampire (or a group of vampires) will invent a sort of moral code to justify their preying upon humans. As befits a monster, this will probably be some combination of Bad is Good and Good is Bad, Blue-and-Orange Morality, and The Social Darwinist. Some works will portray this as a sincere attempt to be heroic when killing is a necessity for life, while others will view at as simply an excuse to indulge in violence guilt-free. Compare Religious Vampire, as religion usually has to replace or integrate with this. Contrast Vegetarian Vampire, where a vampire's moral code does not allow bloodsucking at all. |

Tanz Der Vampire: After becoming vampires, Shagal and Magda decide that everyone sucks something from other people, whether it's love, blood, or money, and vampirism is no worse. All the other vampires believe that indulging in greed is the most important thing for an individual to do. |

Discworld: Vampires who are part of the Uberwald Temperance League (vampires who recognize that getting blood from elsewhere is a minor inconvenience compared to getting staked every few years) get their blood from raw meat, while others manage to shift their addiction to something else like coffee.

The titular character of Carmilla believes that vampire predatation of humans is natural, and thus is no worse than a wolf killing a deer.

Vampire: The Masquerade: This is necessary for the Sabbat, as the game's Karma Meter means that following their Fully-Embraced Fiend ideals and not becoming a mindless monster requires an alternate morality system. Enter the Paths Of Enlightenment, which replace killing as the greatest sin with (depending on which Path) not indulging in hunger, submitting to others, using tools in hunting other than innate powers, dabbling in Infernalism or something else. Most of the Paths don't make much sense as philosophies, but that's hardly the point of them- their aim is keeping the Enemy Within in check.

The Vampire Chronicles: The vampire Nicki decides that there is no good or evil, only good and bad art. Since he is living in a cheap theatre, this isn't exactly a comfort to him. With the exception of Early Installment Weirdness in Interview With The Vampire, Lestat always has a moral code of only killing evildoers. |

Preacher: Cassidy beats the crap out of and then kills a fellow vampire for taking human victims since vampires in this setting are able to survive on animal blood (the only trait Preacher vampires share with the Classical Movie Vampire is catching fire in sunlight). Cassidy is still evil, he just manifests it in more mundane ways like being a Domestic Abuser and pathological liar.
