These are the outsiders, the social outcasts, the misfits and the weird EXCEPT that people value their opinions. They have a reputation for wisdom even though their wisdom is unconventional. This trope is Older Than Dirt. Many ancient cultures would cast the disabled out to die in the wilderness. If these disabled survived, they were believed to have the protection of the gods or divine favor. Such individuals often became prophets or witch doctors. They continued to be excluded from the tribe but at the same time, they were sought out whenever anyone sought the favor of the gods. Many of these had mental illnesses and were considered to be possessed by demons. Others, like the oracles, were believed to be the mouthpiece of the gods and their gibberish was translated as the wisdom of the gods. Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_3'); })This trope evolved over the centuries and in Medieval times, these individuals became court jesters. They were fed and clothed and hung out with royalty. They were still regarded as social outcasts but they enjoyed protection and care because their foolish ramblings contained unconventional wisdom. In modern times, this trope has faded in popularity but it still can be seen often. Sometimes it is seen as a racial thing where someone from a minority race is depicted as being wise but still not allowed to socialize as an equal. Another common modern occurrence is when a magical person or creature shows up to teach a lesson and then leaves because he or she doesn\'t fit in conventional society. Overlaps with Inexplicably Awesome in cases where the awesomeness is a source of wisdom. Overlaps with Madness Tropes except that those deal with levels of real madness whereas this deals more with the perception of madness. Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_2'); })This is a Super Trope. All Sub Tropes should include some form of the wise fool being respected or listened to. Sub Tropes include: Is wise and is perceived as wise but in an unconventional manner. Absent-Minded Professor Cunning Like a Fox Ditzy Genius Eccentric Mentor Hermit Guru Noble Savage Smarter Than You Look The Jester The Wonka Trickster Mentor Wisdom from the Gutter Is a fool but perceived as wise or acting like a fool in order to be perceived as A Riddle Wrapped in a Mystery Inside an Enigma or to propose a Riddle for the Ages. Crazy Sane Mad Oracle Seemingly Profound Fool Too Dumb to Fool Is a fool but is occasionally right or has wisdom in a specific area. Dumbass Has a Point Genius Ditz Idiot Savant The Cuckoo Lander Was Right The Rain Man Some Sub Tropes are mistaken as Wise Fools even though they aren\'t. Sub Tropes that are not Wise Fools include: Is the standard wise one. Old Master Only Sane Man Reasonable Authority Figure Wasteland Elder Is wise but perceived as a fool. Obfuscating Insanity Obfuscating Stupidity Is a complete fool in both fact and perception. Cloud Cuckoo Lander The Ditz The Cassandra Since this is a Super Trope, please only include examples that do not fit one of the subtropes. |

Wit: In which a brilliant young doctor fails abysmally to understand the non-physical needs and fears of his patient, while the less well-educated and probably less intelligent nurse both understands and affords the patient dignity and care, and it is the latter character who ultimately understands life and death more.

In 3rd Rock from the Sun, Harry is a wise fool, but in a way so are all the aliens. They are all outsiders and yet they say some of the most brilliant things. Harry is just doubly outside because he's even an outsider to his fellow outsiders.
