Batuque is a manga by Toshio Sako, first published in Young Jump in July 2018. It follows Ichiri Sanjou, a skate-boarding high-schooler who chafes under the restrictions set on her by her parents. A chance encounter in the park, followed by a convenience store robbery, introduces her to a seemingly homeless Brazilian man who practices Capoeira (later revealed to be named Mestre Buscapé). Ichiri and her friends begin tutelage under him, and Ichiri seems to be a natural at it, embracing both the combat and also the message of freedom in the art. However, there is more going on beneath the surface than she realizes, as parts of her early life start coming back to her and she begins to realize that her family has secrets they have been keeping from her about their origins... | |

Mestre Mao's complex and trickery style of Capoeira Angola gets dismantled by Yusa's simple MMA strikes, and Mestres Koizumi and Rua are defeated by his grappling, getting finished by his ground strikes and submission holds respectively once they hit the ground. Ichiri holds her own against him as she has co-trained grappling alongside her own Capoeira and at best, she manages a draw against the MMA champion. | |
