Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })The manga version of Dragon Ball Super is serialized monthly in V-Jump, with its story by Akira Toriyama and illustrations by Toyotarō (who previously created the Dragon Ball Heroes spin-off manga Victory Mission). As Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ was adapted in V-Jump just prior to the start of Super, the manga begins with the Battle of Gods arc before skipping into the Universe Six arc.An interesting observation regarding the manga is its deviance from the anime continuity. Events in arcs leading up to where the anime ends at the Tournament of Power play out differently, hence the need for a separate page discussing it. While the art is handled by Toyotaro with some corrections by Toriyama, the current story is penned as a collaborative effort between him and Toriyama.

Dirty Coward: Goku Black comes off as this since he brags about how he murdered the gods while fighting Vegeta and how his word is now law. Goku points out that Black technically cheated since he didn't fight the Gods of Destruction and just killed the weaker Supreme Kais since their lives are linked. Black shoots back that the method doesn't matter. While Black in the anime did the same thing, he comes off less cowardly and more pragmatic since no one calls him out for 'cheating' and he didn't use the death of the gods as a Badass Boast. Also in the manga, Black chose Future Trunks' timeline because Beerus died thanks to Future Dabra killing all the Supreme Kais and Goku and the others are long dead, leaving no one powerful enough to stop him. Which makes Black look like a bully since he torments Trunks to get stronger, after he purposely avoided anyone who could challenge him. Black having a Villainous Breakdown as Vegeta beats him up highlights this trait. Also, when Gowasu and the U7's Supreme Kai saves Future Trunks and Mai, he becomes scared that they may tell Zen'o what happened, so Future Zamasu and he are ready to flee into another timeline. In the anime, Black never mentions Zen'o, although it's unclear if he simply didn't fear Zen'o or he did't think he would interfere. Merged Zamasu also fits this trope as when Goku almost kills him with an incomplete version of Beerus' Destruction technique, he proceeds to portal out and grab Future Mai as a human shield, distracting Goku enough for Zamasu to take him out of the fight. He's also pretty cocky and smug when he corners the heroes in his infinite form, but when Goku summons Zen'o, he and the rest of his clones pretty much shit themselves on the spot and spend their last moments running for their lives in terror.

Frost and Freeza's Villain Team-Up subplot during the tournament of power's early part receives more focus, revealing that Freeza himself suggested that Frost target Krillin, Tien, and Master Roshi. In the anime, there was nothing particularly special about his role in the elimination of the first and third on that list, simply being portrayed as U6's Token Evil Teammate doing what he does best.

Magetta gets a minor case of this in the Super manga. In the anime, Magetta gives Vegeta a hard fight and nearly rings him out twice thanks to his species' ability to produce and withstand heat, having a nearly indestructible body that can withstand a Final Flash from Super Saiyan Vegeta, and can drink and spit up lava. In the manga, Vados doesn't produce a second barrier, which greatly limits Magetta since he can't fly nor can he suffocate Vegeta with his heat. He does no real damage to Vegeta during their match and the entire fight is treated as a gag similar to the early Dragon Ball fights. Vegeta also get hit with the Adaptational Wimp since Super Saiyan Vegeta apparently can't lift 1000 tons.

Bloodier and Gorier: In comparison to the anime, which largely went by Bloodless Carnage. This is especially the case during the Moro arc, where the violence and brutality reaches graphic levels not seen since the Z era, with characters dying in gruesome ways; most notably, Saganbo is pumped full of energy by Moro until his muscles swell beyond capacity and his organs rupture, causing him to cough up a torrent of blood and drop dead.

Manga Black is far less impressive than his anime counterpart. His higher form appears to be Super Saiyan 2 and he gets his shit kicked in by Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta. Even worse, Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta can beat back his Super Saiyan form. He would have died if Future Zamasu hasn't intervened and healed him. Keep in mind, in the anime, Black in his base form was able to take hits from Vegeta at full power and not take any noticeable damage. Chapter 20 mitigates this and has Black curbstomp Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta and Goku in a similar fashion to his anime counterpart - by using his Adaptive Ability to increase in power and surpass them. He also gains Super Saiyan Rosé, although he does take a downturn in his last fight where he doesn't grow stronger after Vegeta beats him to a barely living pulp, instead choosing to whine about it to Future Zamasu.

In the Super manga, Champa is portrayed as this. While Beerus causes chaos on Earth during the Battle of Gods Saga, Champa is flying around with Vados searching for the Super Dragon Balls, and giving grief to Old Kai and the Supreme Kai who don't know what he wants. He also tells Sorbet to revive Freeza just to troll Beerus. In the anime, Champa doesn't even appear until the Resurrection 'F' Saga and he has nothing to do with Freeza or his revival.

Adaptation Expansion
Dragon Ball Super (Manga) / int_23473ae7
comment
Adaptation Expansion: Although events in the Super manga usually falls into Adaptation Distillation since it is a monthly publication, it does some times expand on storylines that are glossed over in the anime: Vegeta's fight with Frost is much longer in the manga. In the anime, Vegeta literally one-shots Frost. In the manga, Vegeta beats on Frost for several pages and knocks him unconscious for the rest of the tournament. The second fight between Future Trunks and Goku Black is longer in the manga. In the anime, Goku Black takes Trunks down quickly after allowing one free hit, while in the manga, they fight for several panels and Goku Black uses more of Goku's moves like the Instant Transmission. Chapter 16 tells what happens during Future Trunks' struggle to prevent Majin Buu's awakening. Trunks trains with the Z-Sword and takes out Pui Pui and Yakon off-screen. Kibitio dies, making Trunks ascend to Super Saiyan 2, the Z-Sword is destroyed by Dabra, killing Old Kai, the Supreme Kai is fatally injured and eventually dies of his injures, but not before he holds down Dabra, giving Trunks the killing shot. Since all the Supreme Kais are dead, Beerus also dies. Goku Black is also watching all of this from the distance. The manga shows Black earning his Super Saiyan Rosé form. He started off with a standard Super Saiyan 2 transformation and battles Vegeta, who kicks his butt and have to be saved by Future Zamasu. Taking advantage of the Saiyans' ability to grow stronger from near-death, he becomes stronger and is able to beat back Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta with just his Saiyan Saiyan 2 form. To show off his evolution, he transforms into his Super Saiyan Rosé form. The fight with Merged Zamasu is longer than the anime. While Goku and Vegeta fusing was the climax before Future Trunks slices Merged Zamasu's body, the manga keeps the fight going long after Vegeta and Goku defused with Goku fighting Merged Zamasu solo for a second time. From what little Future Trunks tells us in the anime, the Supreme Kai's role is the same as his present counterpart, coming to Earth to warn about Majin Buu's revival. This is not the case with Future Supreme Kai in the manga, who made Trunks into a Supreme Kai disciple, which allowed him to gain healing powers.

Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: While Zamasu in the anime starts out as a well-meaning Kai who has a very strict sense of justice and a strong distrust towards mortals, manga Zamasu was always a jerk since he wanted to kill mortals from the start, seeing them as unneeded beings. Unlike the anime version who slowly slipped into evil through a series of events, manga Zamasu gets triggered just seeing powerful mortals and decides to kill his master and commit mass genocide.

Awesome, but Impractical: Super Saiyan Blue in the manga version. Overall, it comes off as more powerful than its anime counterpart in raw strength, but it comes at the cost of being a major energy drain to the point that you lose 90% of your power if you transform too many times and its full power can only be maintain for a short time. It is basically a more powerful version of Super Saiyan 3. When Goku does master the form by keeping his energy within himself, he becomes so powerful that he can fight Merged Zamasu on almost equal footing. However, this causes a rapid breakdown in Goku's body making this form similar to Super Saiyan Blue/Kaioken from the anime.

A slight change between the anime and manga version of Gowasu. In the manga, Gowasu is much harsher towards Zamasu when he talks about killing mortals for peace, saying that Zamasu should know his place and how his arrogance will lead him to ruin if he doesn't shape up. He also does little to quell Zamasu's issues with mortals. He just tells him how the gods should act. In the anime, Gowasu is much softer when dealing with Zamasu's views. He tries to gently guide Zamasu to the right path and even agrees with him to a point about the mortals. He attempts to quell Zamasu's issues by giving him his own viewpoint of good and evil and reminding Zamasu that the gods are not infallible. He also still shows sympathy for Zamasu even when he sees the monster he has become, while manga Gowasu reached his breaking point after Goku Black impales him.

The manga gives Black another one in the way that it doesn't explain why Black never wanted immortality. In the anime, Black doesn't want to be an immortal since he just wants power and losing the ability to die would eventually make him rusty and battles no fun. While shortsighted, the reason why Black feels this way while none of his other counterparts share this view is because Goku's body corrupted him and he's taken on several of Goku's character traits. In the manga, Black acts more like his true self Zamasu. Outside of having Goku's battle lust, he is still basically Zamasu in personality so he should want immortality like Future Zamasu. The manga not explaining or discussing Black's mindset on this matter makes him look like an idiot to the point that even Future Zamasu indirectly threw spades at Black for abandoning his godly body for power.

The manga also gives one to Goku Black. In the manga, he was watching Future Trunks fight Future Dabra, making sure the Supreme Kai died in the battle, assuring that Beerus will also die because the Supreme Kais and the Gods of Destruction are link. The idiot part comes in that he leaves after Trunks kills Dabra, instead of taking out a weakened and hurt Trunks, assuring that he would have one less powerful enemy to deal with in the future. Given how pragmatic and no-nonsense Goku Black has shown himself to be, especially in the anime, his inaction against Trunks is out of character for him. The manga drew further contrast to the anime by Black telling Trunks to his face that he's keeping him alive to get stronger and even spares Trunks when he has the chance to kill him.

His dynamic with Future Zamasu is also different. In the anime, Black is the calm one while Future Zamasu tends to be more emotional with all his Motive Rants. He is also the one who has a Villainous Breakdown when Future Trunks nearly seals him using the Evil Containment Wave, while Black remained in control even when Vegeta temporarily overwhelmed him. In the manga, Black is the one who is more emotional while Future Zamasu is the calm one and seems to be the leader of the pair instead of the kindred spirits relationship from the anime. They even had infighting when Goku and Vegeta overwhelmed them with Future Zamasu blaming Black for everything and Black calling Future Zamasu useless when they never once fought in the anime. Even Black turning down becoming an immortal was treated as a friendly disagreement that Future Zamasu eventually accepted. They also never worked together, preferring to fight on their own in the manga, while Black and Future Zamasu are very much a team in the anime to the point that Vegeta cities this as one of the major reasons they're unstoppable in a straight fight.

Adaptational Ugliness: In the Super manga, Black is drawn more like a psycho with his Slasher Smiles and dark eye outlines much like Majin Vegeta. His body also has the same bulk as Goku. In the anime, Black is drawn more slender compared to Goku and has a softer appearance overall. He becomes even more attractive when he achieves his Super Saiyan Rosé form, something he's fully aware of. Zigzag. Much like Goku Black, the manga version of Merged Zamasu is drawn more like a brute and has a heavier built than Future Zamasu. In the anime, he is drawn far more elegant and slender, until Goku melts half of his face and his appearance becomes that of a purple slime monster.

Smug Snake: Goku Black comes off as a smug snake since he gives a long Motive Rant to Vegeta about how he's righteous because he's a god, while getting his butt kicked. He demands to know what era Vegeta came from to be so powerful and can't go no further than a Super Saiyan 2. Vegeta would have outright killed him if Future Zamasu didn't save him. Also, before then, he isn't happy to see Goku and Vegeta nor is he amused by how powerful they are, while in the anime, Black is little surprised, but delighted to see Goku. He only starts acting smug again after he gains his Super Saiyan Rosé form and stomps Vegeta. In fact, the only real reason why he didn't get squashed like a bug in the wake of Vegeta and Goku and made it as far as he did was luck and little else.

Adaptation Distillation: The Super manga is to its TV counterpart due to it being a monthly publication: The manga cuts down or abridges some of the details from the anime while adding new scenes that werent' in the show (such as the birthday cake incident, the Supreme Kai and Kibito defusing earlier, and Champa being introduced much eariler). As noted before, the manga completely skips Resurrection 'F' and goes straight into Champa's Saga. The fight between Piccolo and Frost only takes up a few pages in the manga before Frost cheats to win the match. In the anime, the first half of episode is devoted to Frost and Piccolo's fight. The conclusion of the tournament and the summoning of the Super Dragon Balls is also less than a chapter long, while the anime version had an entire episode. In the Future Trunks Saga, Goku Black never comes to the past. Instead, Zamasu learns about Goku indirectly from U7's Supreme Kai, who was visiting U10, when asked about Majin Buu. He then become obsessed with Goku after watching Godtube videos of him. Beerus and Whis learn most of their information about Black from Future Trunks and suspects that he's connected to the gods since he murdered all the Supreme Kais to kill the Gods of Destruction, something that only high-leveled gods know. The entire mystery of Black's identity is condensed into one chapter via Info Dump and the characters makes two trips to the past instead of the three like the anime. Vegeta's beat down of Black is also a combination of Goku's first match with Black from Episode 50 and Vegeta's third rematch with Black from Episode 63.

Botamo is tough in both the manga and anime, taking all of Goku's attacks with no damage. In the manga, Botamo's ability works like a rubber ball where he absorbs damage because everything bounces off of him like Luffy from One Piece. In the anime, Botamo outright absorbs damage, sending it to another dimension. So while Botamo in the manga gets knocked around like a stress ball, Botamo in the anime doesn't even flinch when he's taking a hit. It's also noted in the manga that Goku probably could have hurt Botamo with brute force by going Super Saiyan and not holding back. While in the anime, Goku says he probably would have lost in a standard fight, although it is not elaborated if Goku is referring to base or his Super Saiyan forms.

Although Bulma and Gohan's wish wouldn't have amounted to much since Goku died from natural causes and couldn't be revived, and Vegeta was already revived once by the Earth's Dragon Balls and couldn't be wished back again, their wish would have been more beneficial than Pilaf's self-serving wish.

Plot Hole: Gowasu explains that Merged Zamasu's fusion isn't permanent since he wasn't officially a Supreme Kai. He usurped the position when he killed his versions of Gowasu. In the very next chapter after this statement is made, U7's Supreme Kai wishes he was still an apprentice Supreme Kai so he could heal. Gowasu tells him that if was still an apprentice he wouldn't have been able to use the Time Rings since only full-fledged Supreme Kais can use them. This contradicts Gowasu's previously statement that Merged Zamasu wasn't a Supreme Kai since both Black and Future Zamasu could use the Time Rings. Unless Toyotarō explains this as only the Potara Earrings being needed to used the Time Rings or Merged Zamasu doesn't defuse, this is one heck of an oversight.

Adaptation Personality Change
Dragon Ball Super (Manga) / int_6fbe85e6
comment
Adaptation Personality Change: Black from the manga is quite different from his anime counterpart to the point that they can be classified as different characters: In the anime, Black is a Smug Super that always stays calm and never loses his composure, even when he started to lose against Vegeta, and is a clear No-Nonsense Nemesis who will kill his opponents swiftly if giving the opportunity. On the contrary, in the manga, he is more prone to losing his composure the moment things don't go his way, such as Goku and Vegeta appearing in the future, and he goes into a Villainous Breakdown when Vegeta gains the upperhand. He is also more prone to holding the Idiot Ball, like him sparing Future Trunks for the sake of fighting him and to gain better control of Goku's body. Basically, Black in the manga acts more like his true self, Zamasu with Goku's battle lust, while Black in the anime behaves more like a mixture of Goku and Zamasu's personalities. Namely, Black has Goku's calmness. His demeanor is also different between the two versions. In the anime, Black wears a Mask of Sanity and acts polite to those he slaughters and demeans. He will also compliment his opponent if they impressed him, although this is usually only reserved for Goku. Manga Black doesn't bother to hide how Ax-Crazy he is, openingly relishes in his sadism, and doesn't think highly of anyone except himself. Manga Black also tends to shout and is a bit of a ham, while Anime Black is a Soft-Spoken Sadist who almost never raises his voice, and when he does it's on the Cold Ham side. Another big difference between the two is how they react to pain. Anime Black is a straight Combat Sadomasochist who giggles and smiles when hurt since getting injured makes him stronger. Manga Black gets stronger from being hurt too, but he doesn't like it. This is also reflected in his fighting style. Manga Black fights more like a brute, is more aggressive, and his eyes as a Super Saiyan Rosé has a dark outline like Majin Vegeta. He also prefers to beat his opponent down with pure force instead of using a specific style. In comparison, Black in the anime fights with an air of elegance and indifference which is reflective in his Super Saiyan Rosé form that is drawn more refined and ethereal even compared to Super Saiyan Blue. He is also more flamboyant, talking about how beautiful his Super Saiyan Rosé is, and he tends to go for quick critical hits instead of just beating his opponents into submission. His relationship with Vegeta. In the manga, Black finds Vegeta annoying and arrogant after he manages to beat him twice and he takes great pleasure using his Super Saiyan Rosé to clobber him up. In comparison, Black in the anime never takes Vegeta seriously even when he overwhelms him. To him, Vegeta is a warm-up or as he puts it 'an appetizer'. It is hinted in the manga by Goku that Goku Black is a Manipulative Bastard who is just using Future Zamasu and has no real kinship towards him. Given Future Zamasu's freak out and how Goku Black called him useless, it probably has a grain of truth. In the anime, Future Zamasu and Goku Black are a straight up team who have undying trust and care in one another. Similar to Merged Zamasu, he sees killing the old gods as a necessary evil to bring peace to the multiverse since the gods would never understand his ideals. When he tells Goku what he has done, he only takes pride in how powerful his body is to do such a task. When he tries to kill Gowasu for the third time it's done in a matter-of-fact manner and in a way that would cause instant death since he still seems to have some level of respect for his old master. In the manga, Black uses killing the gods as a Badass Boast and declares himself as justice. He also gleefully impales Gowasu with a huge grin on his face after he seemingly accepted Gowasu's peace offering to make amends. To add further salt to the wound, he brags to Gowasu while he's dying about all the times he killed him. Present Zamasu also has several changes between the manga and anime: Minor example. When confronted by Beerus, Whis, the Supreme Kai, and Goku for the second time, Zamasu manages to keep his cool the entire time and even wants to spar with Goku again. When his murder of Gowasu is revealed, he tries to justify his actions calmly and doesn't bother to lie once they figured out most of his plan. In the manga, when Zamasu is confronted by Beerus and Whis he is noticeably nervous and stumbles to find an excuse about why he attacked Zuno. When his plans are revealed, he rants about his views of justice and attacks Beerus. Another small change, in the anime Zamasu is willing to admit that his actions are evil, but from that evil will come a greater justice. Manga Zamasu refuses to see anything he does as evil and mocks Beerus of all people about his justice. His relationship with Gowasu is portrayed slightly differently between the two versions. While Zamasu initially respects Gowasu in both versions, manga Zamasu is more vocal about his opinions and scoffs at Gowasu's mindset about mortals and the role of the gods. In the anime, Zamasu talks about his conflict with Gowasu, wonders why the gods act the way they do, and is somewhat opened to Gowasu's views since he doesn't dismissed them right away. He only decides Gowasu and the other gods are being sinful because they're willing to do nothing while evil flourish because evil leads to justice and he can't accept or understand that the gods are also flawed. Future Zamasu is also a minor example. While Future Zamasu in the anime is very supportive of Goku Black taking Goku's body and even wished he would gain immortality to make himself truly invincible, manga Future Zamasu appears to look down on Goku Black for abandoning his godly body for power. In fact, he seems to only support Goku Black because his immortality alone can't kill all the mortals in the multiverse. His fighting style also differs between the two mediums. Much like Goku Black, Zamasu has a very elegant fighting style and tend to do quick attacks. He also has a bad habit of dropping his guard because he's an immortal, allowing weaker fighters like Super Saiyan 2 Trunks to tag him and will purposely jump in front of attacks meant for Goku Black to protect him. In the manga, he has all of Kibito-Kai's attacks like telekinesis and the ability to paralyze his opponent. He usually fights other opponents to keep them away from Black so he can fight one-on-one. A Downplayed example. While both the anime and manga versions of Merged Zamasu are egoistical Jerkass Gods who wants to reshape the multiverse in their image in the name of 'justice', the anime version of Merged Zamasu sees the death of the old gods as a regrettable step towards peace. He also takes Goku's shell as his own so he can always remember the mistakes of the gods and even shed tears over all he's done. In the manga, Merged Zamasu is a straight up asshole who doesn't give two craps about his fellow gods and happily wants to wipe out anyone that isn't himself and mocks Gowasu and U7's Supreme Kai as inferior gods. He's less about justice and more about becoming a multi-universal ruler. Another different is that Manga Merged Zamasu fights on the ground and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty, using similarly defensive techniques like the anime version of Present Zamasu. Anime Merged Zamasu refuses to fight on the ground, choosing to hover above his opponents and hammers them with over-the-top energy attacks since mortals shouldn't touch a god. When he does directly confront the heroes it's because he's having a mental and emotional breakdown.

In the manga however, he still retains his sanity and is still capable of speech even when he mutates into his Infinite form note Which in this version, is basically him duplicating himself into multiple Fused Zamasus, even point blank declares to Goku that he could Time Travel to the past when they tried to ran away and upon seeing Zen'o, he showed complete fear and ran away as he and his armies are about to be erased from existence.

Idiot Ball: In Chapter 13 of the Super manga, Vegeta lost 90% of his power when fighting Hit since he transformed too many times into Super Saiyan Blue, which severely sap his stamina. What makes Vegeta an idiot is that the transformation only saps stamina when transforming, meaning that Vegeta would've kept his power if just stayed transformed after showing off to Cabba. Since Vegeta trained with Super Saiyan Blue for over four years, he should have known better.

Adaptational Badass: Zigzagged by Frost. He fares a lot better against Super Saiyan Goku in the manga, even if it's clear Goku is still stronger. However, he does overall worse against Piccolo who comes close to overpowering him. Also zigzagged by Piccolo. In the anime, he puts up a magnificent fight against Frost despite not being on the same level of power. In the manga, he seems to have more raw power, but doesn't use any advanced battle tactics and his performance is comparatively lackluster. Zigzagged. Future Trunks, who in the Super manga is more powerful than his anime counterpart. In the anime, Future Trunks is about as powerful as Super Saiyan 2 Goku and Vegeta in the Buu Saga if we used his fight against Future Dabra. Manga Trunks has a mutated Super Saiyan 2 form that is almost on par with Super Saiyan 3 Goku. Instead of using Super Saiyan 3 to knock Trunks out, Goku uses Super Saiyan God. Also, he trained with the Supreme Kai and pulled the Z-Sword. Even better, he fights Dabra with it, before he spits on it and shatters it, killing Old Kai. On the other hand, in the anime Trunks gets a transformation that puts him close enough to Super Saiyan Blue/Rose that he can use his pragmatism to knock out Goku Black, a feat he never comes close to in the Manga. Future Dabra in the Super manga is far more impressive than his anime counterpart. Not only did he kill Kibito and the Supreme Kai of the future, but he broke the Z-Sword by spiting on it, turning it to stone, and then shattering, killing Old Kai who was still trapped, which indirectly killed Beerus since his life is linked with the Supreme Kais. Future Trunks only won because the Supreme Kai used the last of his strength to hold Dabra down so Trunks could kill him. Zigzagged: While he's weaker than Goku Black in both mediums, the manga gives Future Zamasu all of Kibito-Kai's abilities like telekinesis, the ability to heal others, and the ability to paralyze the movements of others. He used these to easily freeze Goku during their fight. At the same time, the manga portrays him as a weaker fighter compared to the anime version, being taken down by Goku and resorting to his immortality almost immediately whereas in the anime he can still fight and inconvenience Goku in an 1-on-1 fight for a while, and even hold down Goku and Future Trunks simultaneously. In fact, according to Goku, he's way weaker than even Super Saiyan 2 Trunks and he gets overwhelmed by Super Saiyan God Goku after he used the Evil Containment Wave. From what little we hear from Future Trunks, the anime version of the Supreme Kai isn't that different from his present counterpart. He's more successful stopping Buu thanks to Trunks not fooling around like his father and Goku. In the manga of Super, he fought with Trunks against Dabra and he made Trunks into a Supreme Kai disciple, which allowed Trunks to gain healing powers (although he didn't know).

Bond Villain Stupidity: In the manga, Goku Blacks falls for many of the same failings as Perfect Cell. He keeps Future Trunks alive for the sake of growing stronger and because he enjoys fighting, while anime Black tries to kill Trunks whenever he gets the chance, although he doesn't hunt Trunks as much as he should. Merged Zamasu's manga counterpart is even worse than his anime self. Much like in the anime, he could have easily killed Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks upon fusing, but chooses to toy with them. Unlike his anime counterpart, he still screws around with them even after Vegito Blue smashed him into the ground. What makes this even worse is that he knows that he has a one hour time limit since he isn't a full Supreme Kai, yet he still wastes time.

Future Trunks in the manga gets this since he has a mutated form of Super Saiyan 2 that makes him even with Super Saiyan 3 Goku note In the manga, Goku didn't absorb godhood. Instead, Super Saiyan God is its own form.. How Trunks got this mutated version Super Saiyan 2 when all the other fighting geniuses didn't has no explanation other than he trained for it, somehow. The closest one can reason is that Trunks' Super Saiyan 2 is based off of Vegeta's rage Super Saiyan 2 form that he got after Beerus slapped Bulma. Even then, that was just a brief power-up and an explosion of rage. He also knows the Solar Flare, something he claimed that he learned from Gohan before he died. Except, we never see Gohan, future or present, ever used the Solar Flare. In fact, Gohan has never witnessed it in use since when Krillin performed it against Dodoria in the Namek Saga, Gohan's back was turned because he was flying away. Later, Trunks conveniently discovers that he can heal people with his hands since he trained as a Supreme Kai's attendance when he was preparing to stop Babidi from awakening Majin Buu.

Small Role, Big Impact: If it wasn't for the Future Majins, the Future Trunks Saga would not have happened in the way it did. Dabra killing the Supreme Kai caused the God of Destruction to also perish (since their lives are linked), which then in turn was what led to Goku Black to invade the timeline, since he was only doing so for timelines without a God of Destruction. Future Supreme Kai turned Future Trunks into a Supreme Kai disciple. Not only did he do the silly ritual to Trunks, he gave him healing powers, which in turn allows Goku to use his perfect Super Saiyan Blue form.

In the manga, he's only angry with Hit (and it's unknown if he even planned on killing him) and it's because Hit threw the match on purpose against Monaka. An extremely minor example. In the anime, Goku Black not only killed Goku upon taking his body, but he also murdered Goten and Chi-Chi out of spite. In the manga version, he only kills Goku.

Adaptational Dumbass: Unlike the anime, Goku Black is more likely to grab the Idiot Ball such as not killing Future Trunks after he's weakened from fighting Future Dabura and actually spares Trunks' life again because he wants to keep fighting him, while anime Black is far more pragmatic and no-nonsense since he tries to kill Trunks every chance he gets and even traps him in the past by destroying the Time Machine. However, the sparing Trunks is justified: much like Captain Ginyu, this version of Black couldn't access anywhere close to all of Goku's power at first, requiring him to use the Saiyan race's innate Came Back Strong abilities to tap into it by having Trunks injure him and being healed by Future Zamasu in turn. In the manga, Gowasu is even more of a Horrible Judge of Character toward Zamasu than he is in the anime. While Gowasu in the anime is aware of Zamasu's issues and tries to help him, manga Gowasu is completely unaware that Zamasu hates mortals until he slices the Barbarian in half, and just harshly tells him to know his place and act like a god without actually trying to quell his issues with mortals. Also, while in the anime, Gowasu chose Zamasu as his successor in part because of his pure heart and strong sense of justice, in the manga, it's heavily implied that Gowasu chose Zamasu as his successor based purely on his battle power, which Whis himself states was a stupid move.

Goku Black comes off as this since he brags about how he murdered the gods while fighting Vegeta and how his word is now law.

As Whis puts it, Gowasu should have chosen his successor based on their compassion and not just based on their fighting strength. In the case of the anime, Zamasu demonstrates why having a pure heart and a strong sense of justice are not good things to have if you're so set in your belief that you can't even consider the possibility of being wrong.

Greater-Scope Villain: In the Super manga, Champa is portrayed as this. Also in the manga, Goku Black was watching Future Trunks' battle against Future Dabra, making sure the Supreme Kai of U7 died along with Beerus.

A minor example. In the anime, when Zamasu slices the Babarian in half, he has a shocked, almost horrified expression on his face. He is so ashamed that he doesn't try to defend himself when Gowasu tells him off, at least until later. His attack on the Babarian also comes off as almost instinctual. In the manga, Zamasu not only purposely cut the Babarian in half, he did it with a Slasher Smile and seems shocked that Gowasu didn't approved of his actions. When Gowasu confronts him about this, Zamasu dismisses his concerns since 'that mortal was trash'. Later, just before he tries to kill Gowasu he indirectly admits that his actions are evil, but they will eventually lead to good. Manga Zamasu scoffs at the notion that anything he does is evil.

Adaptational Jerkass

Adaptational Jerkass: Beerus is much harsher towards Gowasu in the manga about choosing Zamasu as his successor. In the anime, he simply tells Gowasu to choose his students more wisely after Gowasu apologizes for everything that has happened. In the manga, Beerus not only tells Gowasu to picks his students better, but threatens to destroy him if this happens again or at the very least beat the crap out of him. Also, when he confronts Zamasu in the anime he refuses to act despite all the evidence since he needed more hard proof of wrongdoing since Zamasu is the successor of a Supreme Kai from another universe. To that end he lets Zamasu kill Gowasu and has Whis rewind time, giving Zamasu the benefit of the doubt. In the manga, once U7's Supreme Kai confirmed that he messed up Future Trunks' world, he declares that he can destroy him, while adding that he didn't really need a reason since he's a God of Destruction. He also doesn't bother to explain to Gowasu what's going on with Zamasu before killing him. Champa and Vados are more villainous in the Super manga compared to the anime. In the manga, Champa gives Sorbet the idea to revive Freeza just to troll Beerus when no such thing happens in the anime. There is also no mention of the birthday cake incident where Vados set up Beerus and Champa to fight, which leads to several planets being destroyed. Champa is also overall nicer, treating Goku and Vegeta with some degree of respect and even shares food with them. Present Zamasu gets a few: A minor example. The manga version of Merged Zamasu is also worse than his anime counterpart. In the anime, despite his huge ego and calling himself the 'supreme god' of the multiverse, he does somewhat regret killing his fellow gods and sees taking Goku's body as his duty so he can always remember the sins of mortals and the failure of the gods. He even shed tears over his 'burden'. Manga Merged Zamasu declares that any intelligent life that isn't himself will be destroyed, god and mortal. He also mocks Gowasu and the Supreme Kai as lower gods. Finally, after his long battle with Goku and the others, he decides to just nuke the entire galaxy to be rid of them. Minor examples for Goku and Vegeta in the Future Trunks Saga: In the anime, Vegeta wants to fight and kill Goku Black because he murdered his future wife and tortured his future son. He's also fighting for the sake of Trunks' world to the point that he states to Goku Black that he isn't fighting for himself even after Goku Black humiliated him. Goku Black lampshades how this doesn't sound like a Saiyan and even deduces that Vegeta got stronger from righteous fury. Against Merged Zamasu, he willingly fights alongside Goku and even fuses with him, although he says no at first and only relents when he learned that the Potara Fusion isn't permanent for mortals. In the manga, Vegeta wants to fight Goku Black because he looks like Goku and gets stronger to fight him again because Goku Black kicked his butt after going Super Saiyan Rosé. He also does his usual Trash Talk to Goku Black while Vegeta in the anime was dead serious to the point that everyone took note of it. Most of all, Vegeta in the manga never fights alongside Goku to the point that they actually take turns fighting Merged Zamasu. He also absolutely refuses to fused with Goku until he hears the Potara Fusion isn't permanent for mortals and Trunks gives a speech about why he can't let Vegeta die. Overall, anime Vegeta was willing to put aside his pride and fight for the sake of others. Manga Vegeta in comparison wasn't, at least until Chapter 24 where Vegeta asked Trunks to heal Goku since he was the only one who could fight Merged Zamasu as an equal since he mastered Super Saiyan Blue. Trunks even notes how Vegeta swallowed his pride. Goku in the manga never takes Goku Black and Future Zamasu completely seriously despite everything they did. Even hearing that Goku Black killed his alternate self is treated with some humor. He gives Future Zamasu several chances to walk away, while also mocking him for being a weakling who would lose to Future Trunks even with his immortality. In the anime, while Goku does treats Goku Black with some measure of respect, despite being disgusted by his mass destruction, he comes to despise Goku Black and Future Zamasu after they bragged about how Goku Black murdered him and his family after taking his body. After that, he offers no mercy and actually tries to kill Goku Black when he's down.

Demoted to Extra: Many of the Tournament of Power participants who had a memorable or important role in the anime count. For the earliest part of the saga, Krillin counts on team Universe 7. His status as the first eliminated member of the team came as a huge shock, after getting a whole well-received mini-arc about him regaining lost strength and resolve, not to mention going down after taking out several opponents on his own. Here, the instant the starting formation he and the rest of team U7's more cautious half formed breaks, he's knocked out of the ring by Frost without a chance to do anything.

New Powers as the Plot Demands: Vegeta reveals that Goku found a way to hold in the aura of Super Saiyan Blue so he can fight at his max power for a longer period of time without the power drain the form is known for. This mastery of Super Saiyan Blue allows Goku to fight Merged Zamasu on almost equal terms. This revelation comes out of nowhere with no foreshadowing and Vegeta only learns about it because he fused with Goku earlier to form Vegito. In Chapter 25 of the manga, Goku reveals that he knows Beerus' Destroy technique. This comes out of nowhere since Goku has never even seen the technique in the manga, at least on screen.

Adaptational Wimp
Dragon Ball Super (Manga) / int_d500b978
comment
Adaptational Wimp: Botamo is tough in both the manga and anime, taking all of Goku's attacks with no damage. Vegeta seemingly gets hit with this in the manga adaptation of the Universe 6 arc. In the anime, Goku and Vegeta are statically equals. Goku only manages to surpass Vegeta because he can combine Super Saiyan Blue with the Kaioken and can take it up to times ten. In the manga, Vegeta not only loses to Hit as rapidly as in the anime but it's revealed that Goku is able to dominate Hit using Super Saiyan God, a form which Vegeta has never shown he could access and that is markedly weaker than Blue. Subverted in this arc as it's revealed that Blue has a major stamina weakness and using it multiple times reduces its power to only about 10% of normal. Further averted in the Goku Black and Universal Tournament arcs. Vegeta not only shows he can use Super Saiyan God but develops a way to shift between God and Blue a huge number of times in order to bring out the best in both forms. While Goku gains the upperhand by completing Blue, allowing him to compete if not defeat Merged Zamasu, their equilibrium is restored in the next arc when Vegeta masters the form as well. Hit is also not spared in the same manga chapter. In the anime, Hit was on par with Super Saiyan God Goku, although he was overwhelmed once Goku learned how to counter his time-skip. That is until Hit improved and increased the time so he can freeze time, forcing Goku to use the Kaioken to counter it. Even then, it was an even match and Hit was holding back since he couldn't use any of his killing techniques. In the manga, Hit is overwhelmed by Super Saiyan God Goku and he doesn't improve. He has just been holding back and can only use his full power time-skip for a few minutes before burning out since he's out of practice, much like 100% Freeza on Namek. After Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan Blue, he has the match all but won, but forfeits since Hit can't use his killing techniques. Goku then tells Vegeta that he may have beaten Hit if he didn't waste so much energy with Cabba. Even Goku underwent this in the Super manga. The reason he can use Super Saiyan God at will now is because he never absorbed its power during the manga's adaption of Battle of Gods. This also keeps Goku (and Vegeta) around the same level of power they were in the Buu Saga, because the manga skips over Resurrection 'F' and the Base Goku vs. 4th Form Freeza fight. In Chapter 15, Whis indicates he's slightly weaker than Future Trunks while both are using Super Saiyan 2 and Trunks even outmatches Super Saiyan 3 Goku with his mutated Super Saiyan 2 form. Like his mortal component in the manga, Merged Zamasu isn't as impressive as his anime counterpart. For one, his fusion didn't bring a halo, and most of his techniques are fairly standard powers the Supreme Kai has done in the past. His personality is changed too, with him fighting with a defensive fighting style, similar to Present Zamasu in the anime, compared with his anime counterpart who loved to show his abilities by hovering above those beneath him. And worse, Gowasu explains the fusion is temporary because Zamasu isn't a true Supreme Kai since he usurp his position. On the bright side, unlike his anime counterpart, his immortality is left fully intact. Nearly every fighter in the Tournament of Power gets hit hard with this. Notable examples are: Katopesla, who manages to endure attacks and humiliation from fighters like Freeza, Kale, Vegeta, Android 17, and the Pride Troopers, is one of the first eliminated in the opening chapter of the battle. Android 18 and the Maiden Squadron both had significant roles in the anime, but while Android 18 did fare a little better during the early parts, she and the girls get easily taken out by Gamisaras (or possibly even Damon). Kale gets a huge buff in the manga, at the expense of almost an entire fourth of the fighters. Her victims who were rather formidable in the anime include Darkori, Ganos, Anilaza, Zarbuto, Zirloin, Rabanra, Obni, Magetta, Pirina, and Saonel (keep in mind that almost all of these fighters were the Last Stand of the respective universes that gave their opponents a tough fight, while Ganos himself proved to be quite a showdown for Roshi). Ironically enough, the Pride Troopers she fights afterwards give her more of a hard time.

Hypocrite: Zamasu and his counterparts are huge ones. Goku Black looks down on mortals and thinks they all deserve to be destroyed, yet he steals Goku's body in order to attain a perfect form.Even more, in the manga, he let mortals like Future Dabra and Babidi kill U7's Supreme Kai. Then, after Future Trunks flees the timeline and with all the gods in his time dead, he becomes bored without anyone to oppose him — just like how he and Zamasu believe mortals can't go on without war and destruction]]. Goku Black hates Vegeta because he finds him an arrogant prick. This is coming from the same person who bullied Future Trunks for over a year and rubbed his face in about him being weak. He also declares himself to be beyond any mortal after he obtained his Super Saiyan Rosé form. Merged Zamasu mocks Goku and Vegeta for being arrogant when they fought his components. You know, the same Goku Black and Future Zamasu who were both Smug Supers and Smug Snakes. Not to mention he has an ego bigger than both of them combined.

Curbstomp Battle: Merged Zamasu is utterly stomped by Vegito Blue. The only reason why he isn't killed is because of his immorality. Vegeta vs Beerus round 2. Initially Beerus effortlessly tosses Vegeta around like a ragdoll. Then Vegeta gets mad and brings out his trump card SSB-Complete. He puts Beerus on the defensive and finally gets a hit in on him...it does nothing but, anger Beerus who instantly defeats Vegeta in a single attack. It's very clear Beerus was massively holding back against SSG Goku now that we see him effortlessly defeat SSB Vegeta.

Contrived Coincidence

Contrived Coincidence: Because the Super manga is a monthly publication, it has to cram a lot of information and events into one chapter. Meaning certain events and information that are spread out through several anime episodes can get rammed together or altered into one chapter, which can make certain events happen because of coincidences: In Chapter 14, just before Future Trunks makes his return to the present, Bulma just happens to be messing around with time travel for makeup products, for some reason. Jaco is there to tell her the dangers of time travel and split timelines. On the side, we see Trunks and the Pilaf gang's teacher talking about time travel and how drastic different timelines can be. Future Trunks also returns when everyone happens to be at Capsule Corp celebrating their victory over Universe 6. Also, on the day Future Trunks comes to the present, the Supreme Kai of Universe 7 happens to be visiting Universe 10. Zamasu congratulates the Supreme Kai and Kibito for defeating Majin Buu, saying how much he admires them (keep in mind, Kid Buu died over five years ago at this point). The Supreme Kai corrects him, saying it was actually a bunch of mortals who killed Buu. This disturbs Zamasu since he never thought mortals could surpass gods. Chapter 18 of the manga runs on contrived coincidences where everyone figures out Black's origins thanks to Zamasu specifically asking Zuno if it was possible to switch bodies with a mortal using the Super Dragon Balls. This allows Trunks to figure out that Zamasu must have traded bodies with Goku after speaking with Kibito, who Goku decides to ask about Black (who sparred with Zamasu in an earlier chapter) for no real reason. Whis also has a picture of Goku Black, somehow, and guessed that he's a Supreme Kai based on his different color earrings and correctly figures out that Zamasu learned from Goku from the Universe 6 tournament. Because the manga doesn't have the Stable Time Loop that leads to Goku Black's creation, Future Trunks returning to the past just in time to stop Zamasu from using the Super Dragon Balls to steal Goku's body is this since Trunks coming just a little too soon or too late would have prevented Beerus from killing Zamasu and figuring out who Black is.

While Anime Black managed to remain likable despite being an utter monster because of his calm and somewhat charming personality, Manga Black is an outright prick who has tantrums when things don't go his way and seems to only get ahead because he's a lucky bastard. Info Dump: The Super manga in general has this problem; Because it only has so many pages to convey information over a month, any plot details are often dumped into long dialog boxes between characters. Character development gets sidelined in favor of plot infomation, with the characters some times repeating themselves or the same info being said in a different way by another character. While the mystery of Goku Black is slowly unveiled through several episodes and twists in the anime, the Super manga dumps all the information about Black into one chapter.
