Fruits Basket is a shoujo manga series written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya. It first ran in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine from July 1998 to November 2006.After the death of her mother, young Tohru Honda has been secretly living on her own in a tent. Her life changes forever when she stumbles upon the secret of the estate she is living on illegally: the land is owned by the Sohma family, who are afflicted by a Hereditary Curse that changes thirteen members of the family into animals of the Eastern Zodiac (plus the Cat, an animal who would have been part of the Zodiac but was left out) when they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex that is not also a Zodiac member. Oh, and the family is a hotbed of horribly abusive parents and children with enough emotional issues to make a shrink very wealthy.Upon being discovered and taken in by the Sohmas, sweet-natured Tohru becomes embroiled in the dysfunctional family's various crises, bringing the outside world to the closed-off family while also having to confront some issues of her own.One of the best-selling shoujo manga series in both Japan and America, Fruits Basket is often the second best-selling manga series in the US period, beat only by a certain ninja. Originally translated to completion by Tokyopop, the story was re-translated and re-released in omnibus format by Yen Press in North America.The series was first adapted as an anime TV series in 2001, which ran from July 5 to December 27 on TV Tokyo. It was produced by Studio DEEN and directed by Akitaroh Daichi.In July 2015, Takaya announced that Fruits Basket would be receiving a sequel in the form of a side story titled Fruits Basket another. Taking place after the main trio graduate, the story focuses on a young girl named Sawa Mitoma instead as she goes through her first days in high school. The side story premiered online starting in September 2015, and ended with three volumes in 2018. This sequel has a few one-shots written after the conclusion of the main manga, however.Another post-series spinoff, Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc, concerns the titular trio of Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame discussing the aftermath of the main story. This lasted for three chapters, but was announced to have a follow-up installment.In November 2018, it was announced that Fruits Basket would have a second animated adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment and directed by Yoshihide Ibata, that follows the original manga's story more closely. It premiered on TV Tokyo (which also aired the first anime) in April 2019; the second season premiered in April 2020 and the third and final season premiered in April 2021, nearly twenty years after the 2001 anime's premiere. The 2019 anime is also licensed by Funimation and features Role Reprises from several core members of its English voice cast.The series received a compilation film titled Fruits Basket: Prelude, which premiered on February 18, 2022. To put it another way, there's a grand total of three caring biological parents in this family still alive at the start of the series, Hiro's mother, Kisa's mother and Ritsu's mother, and the latter's parenting has its own issues. It is shown sitting in her tent on the very first page, hanging off the iconic picture of her mother. Turns out to be one of the most driving plot devices as Tohru has a dream remembering her receiving the hat from a little boy when she was lost as a child and he led her home and in the second volume goes into full detail about the event. But while hinting at the significance of this story, what at first seems like it might only be a cute accidental meeting as we don't know whether the mysterious boy is Yuki or Kyo at first and when we find it was Yuki it is still unsure who the Official Couple will be, it actually turns out to weave into a whole Jigsaw Puzzle Plot between Kyo, Yuki and Tohru's Dark and Troubled Past where Everyone Is Related in ways that ultimately turn every character relationship on their head and clears up all their past actions towards each other, in one Reveal right after another. Adaptation Expansion: While the 2019 anime follows the manga much more closely than the 2001 anime did, it also adds and alters scenes to fill in the runtime. In episode 4, Kagura decides to make dinner for the family and ends up having to run to the store after she destroys their meal while beating up Kyo. Tohru gets the chance to have one-on-one bonding time with her when she follows her to the store and they walk home together. The scene where Tohru learns about Kyo's passion for martial arts is also altered; as it takes place before Kagura finishes cooking rather than before bedtime like in the manga. In episode 5, additional scenes showed what Yuki and Kyo were doing as they searched for the Honda home while Tohru herself had to face her relatives. Episode 7 adds an expanded flashback of Akito pulling an Eye Scream on Hatori's left eye, complete with blood. It would seem like a Gory Discretion Shot like the manga... but then the Gory Discretion Shot got averted right after that first flashback and we're shown to how the Eye Scream happened in the first place during the latter half of the episode! Yikes... In episode 8, we get to see what Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo were doing in between the latter two making it home and the three of them watching the New Year's sunrise on the roof. Uo-chan is also shown calling Tohru to check in on her. Episode 14 shows that Momiji's mom attempted suicide by stabbing herself with a pair of scissors in her insanity, causing the talk between Momiji and his dad afterwards to be done outside her operating room. Mitsuru has a part in episode 19, and she and Ritsu manage to connect very well after a trick from Shigure and an accidental ruined story draft, the latter of which was the reason for Ritsu's more serious Interrupted Suicide here. Episode 24 makes The Reveal of the cat's true form much more tense by actually showing Kyo's (painful) transformation into the form, and having him use enough force to send Tohru flying into a pond when he's trying to scare her away. Half of episode 29 expands on the effect being dumped by Rin has on Haru, and the other characters planning events for summer vacation. Late in the series, when Akito gives Rin her Traumatic Haircut, she just cuts off the ends of a bunch of clumps, making Rin look quite a bit more crude by the time she's rescued. Sure, on paper having the ability to transform into an animal sounds like it would be pretty fun and/or cool for some people, but it's eventually made clear that the Sohma family curse really is a curse with far more cons than pros. It's stated very early on that the Sohmas don't get any particularly cool powers and abilities regarding their given animals; they have some form of non-verbal communication with their animals (such as when Shigure intuits that a cliffside has collapsed when he hears a dog howling), and when transformed they can only do whatever comes naturally to their respective animal (which may be cool for animals like the Rooster, but not so much for animals like the Sheep). In addition, those who are cursed can't control their transformations and there's also the issue of how the people around them who know about the curse will react, especially their parents, who would have to deal with the shock of their child turning into an animal shortly after they're born. As a result, most members of the Zodiac have to deal with their parents being either abusive, neglectful (or full on disowning them), or even going to the opposite extreme and becoming extremely overprotective. Worst of all, as members of the Zodiac, they're all bound to be subservient to the one who's possessed by the spirit of the "God" that brought all the animals together, no matter how much said God abuses them. | |

While this applies to a lot of the Sohmas after meeting Tohru, this is best exemplified with Yuki, who froze upon meeting two people heavily responsible for his issues after an extended period of time of not being around them (Akito, who appeared suddenly at his school when he decided not to attend the first New Year's Banquet and his mother, who attempted to bulldoze her way through her parent-teacher conference regarding Yuki's future). In both situations, despite having healed a bit from his experiences with Tohru, Yuki's unable to navigate his way through the mental fog that overcomes him when faced with his abuser right away. He finally gets a lot better at helping himself by the time of the second New Year's Banquet. Despite good intentions and overwhelming support Ayame has for Yuki now, Ayame can't force Yuki to forgive him for all the years Ayame ignored Yuki. Rin is incredibly bitter to find out that the curse breaking doesn't immediately relieve her of the feelings of abandonment and abuse that she suffered from her parents and Akito. Even though the final chapters of Fruits Basket end on a high note, with most of the Zodiac members (sans Rin) choosing to forgive Akito for all of the abuse she had done to them, Another shows that her relationship with them is nearly nonexistent - the only character she remains in active contact with outside of her immediate family is Tohru, primarily due to the friendship between their children. Although this is somewhat Akito's decision due to her own guilt, it's clear that the years of emotional and physical torment she caused them have done irreparable damage to most of her relationships with the former Zodiac members. | |

Adaptation Distillation: Due to the first anime only running 26 episodes, a lot of events were moved around in the 2019 anime: The chapter where Tohru first visits the Sohma estate and the chapter where she first sees Hatori's Zodiac form are combined into one episode in both adaptations of the anime. In the manga, Tohru meets Hiro and Ritsu after the incident with Kyo's "true" form, but in the first anime, it happens before, since their particular meetings are self-contained. Rin and Kureno's meetings with Tohru, on the other hand, take place during the Beach Arc, so they don't appear in the first anime. In the 2001 anime, Mayuko-sensei is replaced with the gym teacher in all of her scenes, and she isn't mentioned when Ayame gives Hatori the pictures of Kana's wedding, which he got from her in the manga. In episode 3 of the 2019 anime, some events from chapter 8 (the preparations for the culture fest, Momiji's first meeting with Tohru, and the riceball analogy) are moved here. The last one nicely foreshadows episode 5, however. Episode 6 combines the culture fest with the sleepover. The two events also occur in reverse order, transitioned by Tohru accidentally slipping out that she's been staying with the Somas when Uo and Hana confront her about being casual with Yuki. Episode 23 has the Sick Episode in its first half, extracting the Poor Communication Kills that resulted from Kyo taking leeks from Yuki's garden. The second half has the buildup to Kazuma's introduction and foreshadowing for Kyo's true form. Two of Hanajima's most significant focal chapters in the series - the Yuki Fan Club's visit to her house, as well as her backstory - are placed back to back in season one of the 2019 anime as episodes 21 and 22, respectively. In the manga, these events occur at completely separate times; Hana's backstory is not seen for several volumes after the Yuki Fan Club's visit. The 2019 anime, aside from some brief references from Kyoko here and there, completely removes her backstory with Katsuya. However, it was later announced that Kyoko and Katsuya's backstory would be covered in 2022 with their own anime, Kyoko to Katsuya no Monogatari. The 2019 anime removed some rather notable Yuki/Machi moments, which results in their relationship progressing at a much faster rate than the more natural development they were provided in the manga. The 2019 anime also removed Komaki, Kakeru's girlfriend, whose father also died in the same car accident that killed Kyoko and causes some tension between Kakeru and Tohru because of it. In the manga, Kyo is barred from visiting Tohru in the hospital after Yuki tells Hana and Uo about what Kyo said to her, but the 2019 anime removes this moment and reframes it so that Kyo is simply avoiding her. This makes Kyo's decision to simply abandon her seem a lot more preemptive, as opposed to a reaction to Hana and Uo's wrath/being told that Tohru does not want to see him. Yuki's rant however, is more powerful as a result because he knows Kyo's running away from his problems again. | |

When Tohru and the others visit Kyoko's grave, Kyo is visibly nervous during the visit and at one point asks Hanajima if she could see spirits, hinting that they not only knew each other, but Kyo blaming himself for Kyoko's death. This becomes even more overt when Hanajima point blank tells Kyo that his waves are in total disarray, and asks why he is filled with such regret and guilt. After Yuki's collapse due to a respiratory attack in Haru's introduction, despite being reassured Yuki will be all right, Tohru insists on staying to watch over him due to how a cold shouldn't be taken lightly. Stating how her mother would agree, it's later learned that Tohru's father's death was due to a cold that quickly developed into pneumonia. When Tohru suggests to Rin that they ask Kureno for help with breaking the Sohma curse, Rin immediately dismisses the idea, saying that Kureno isn't one of them despite the fact that he's the Rooster. This is because Kureno has actually been free of the curse for at least ten years, and despite keeping this a secret, the other Zodiac members still subconsciously feel as though he's no longer one of them. | |

Good Parents: In this series, a parent can get a pass simply by not being a nihilistic asshole, but there's actually a few shining examples of goodness: Tohru's mother was almost obsessively doting, but she was still a loving parent and her wisdom is what guides Tohru and allows her to help others. Hiro's mother totally accepts him being a sheep and goes out of her way to shower him with love and affection, which makes his brattiness somewhat glaring. Saki has a loving family who tries their best to emotionally support her, especially when she was bullied during elementary and middle school. Shigure's parents are briefly shown, and he seems to have a slightly disinterested but relatively stable relationship with them (as he does with most people) - he chats with them at a party in Volume 17 without too much fuss. Kisa's mother has her own issues to deal with, but she's still ultimately a better mother than most parents of cursed Sohmas. When we first meet her, it seems Kisa's mother has fallen into the trap of being an overprotective Sohma parent, and is at the end of her rope. But some time apart does the both of them good—When Kisa decides to stay at Shigure's house for a few days to be with Tohru, her mother calls everyday to make sure she's eating properly and to tell Tohru what her favorite food is—worrying, but not smothering. Ritsu's mother, though asphyxiatingly overprotective of him, does genuinely care about him and even very dramatically tells Tohru (before the latter even meets him) that he's "a good boy" despite all his...quirks. According to the author notes, Kagura and her mother are very close, although this isn't really shown in the series proper. The 2019 anime shows their closeness a bit more by including the mother in more scenes at Kagura's house. | |

Karma Houdini: Multiple characters, and It Makes Sense in Context. Two of the main themes in the series are forgiveness and second chances, after all. Akito — however, this particular culprit does show remorse for what she pulled on everyone, even realizing with horror that there's simply no way to obtain forgiveness from the most abused members of the cast. That, and she has now the knowledge and strength of self to break off the cycle of abuse that was started by Ren... Ren really doesn't get punished for all of the emotional abuse and trickery she racks up over the course of the manga. Although she still doesn't end up too well, given that Akito is able to move past her manipulations and thus can't be tormented by Ren anymore, leaving Ren just a slightly crazy woman who is ignored and/or disliked by the Zodiac, a lot of the servants, and the family at large. However, considering how a good part of Ren's motivation is her desire to completely ruin Akito, this might actually be the best punishment for her. Now Akito is free and somewhat redeemed, and she will be more or less happy from now on — while Ren will always be there to see this and will never get over herself. This might as well overlap with Cruel Mercy as well, as the Sohma's head maid mentioned that it's a much better choice for Akito to cast Ren into exile than to let her stay inside the Sohma household. But it still stands that Ren will only stew in her resentment for the rest of her life while Akito found a chance in happiness. The neglectful or actively Abusive Parents or get away relatively unscathed. Rin's Abusive Parents? Well, Hatsuharu called them out, and Rin went to live with Kagura, but no action is actually taken against them. Momiji's mother and father? He's called out by his son for his neglect but that's it; while she retains the "perfect life" that her husband created for her at Momiji's expense — even his violin lessons were stopped when his little sister decided she wanted to play. Perhaps the latter's mental fragility gets her off the hook, but considering what her son went through... Tohru's massively Jerkass relatives, minus her paternal grandfather. They treated her like crap before the story began, treated her like crap when the readers/viewers see them momentarily, and then Tohru leaves for good and we never learn if they repent, regret or get any kind of consequences. The most punishment any of them get is the male cousin getting a slap and a scolding from Tohru's grandfather and some vague threats from Yuki. | |

Tohru's very presence at Shigure's house is revealed to be the result of a bet Akito made. Ren made a bet with Akito that the Zodiac members would willingly gravitate toward and bond with an All-Loving Hero like Tohru than an abusive Psychopathic Womanchild like Akito, thus proving that the curse cannot truly force the Zodiac members to love their God; if Ren won, Akito would have to leave the family for good. Unfortunately for the owner of the dragon spirit, a little wordplay means that instead of turning into an actual dragon (which would be badass), he turns into a ç«œã�®è�½ã�—å� ("tatsu no otoshigo"; "baby dragon"), or "seahorse". However, Shigure in the manga says that the curse is falling apart and even the animal forms are half-baked forms of what they used to be, and he actually says: "Look at Hatori, for example.". While the traditional legend says there was one banquet and that the rat tricked the cat into missing it, the end of the manga reveals what really happened: the animals partied with the god all the time, but when they started approaching death, the god came up with a drink of reincarnation and gave some to the unconscious and dying cat. The cat woke up after drinking it and gave a Who Wants to Live Forever? speech that pissed everyone else off. Dramatically Missing the Point, they felt betrayed by the cat, drank the elixir, and died at some later point. | |

Kagura beating the tar out of Kyo nearly every scene they're in together is entirely Played for Laughs, since Kyo knows martial arts and should be tough enough to endure Kagura's violence. The only time Kagura is ever scolded for hitting someone is in the case of Tohru, another girl, who ends up knocked out on the floor after receiving a single slap from Kagura in the manga. To a slightly lesser extent, Uotani towards Kyo as well. She picks fights with him whenever she feels like when he's otherwise not bothering her at all. Kyo explicitly states after having his chair kicked by her because "it's easy to kick" that he doesn't retaliate because she's a woman. It's not even mentioned how long the detective had been trailing Tohru, one must wonder if the aunt knew Tohru was originally living in a tent and just didn't care. The male cousin smugly mocks Tohru and tries to shame her by asking if she fooled around with the Sohmas. In fact, in the dub of the original anime he blatantly calls her a little tramp. The female cousin's the least offensive, but is still openly rude to Tohru by whining about having to share a room with her and expresses a backhanded compliment about Tohru having supposedly "shacked up" with a bunch of guys. The rest of the Hondas are implied to be just as bad, if not worse, considering how horribly they treated Tohru during Katsuya's funeral. One has to wonder how in the hell Katsuya turned out the way he did when his family was made up of such loathsome people. | |
