Rena Haze is an ordinary teenage girl except for a simple detail: not only does she possess the rare ability to see spirits, but she is also haunted by a good hundred of them simultaneously. She learned to not pay attention to them and lives a simple life though she often feels lonely, having no one to share that burden with and her mother often leaving her alone due to her job.Enters Joh Mitama, an exorcist from the SecuREIty Associationnote "rei" (霊) meaning "ghost" or "spirits" who made the oath to protect Rena Haze from the ridiculous amount of spirits following her despite being himself absolutely terrified of ghosts. However, they will soon both realize that her spirits aren't actually very dangerous at all. In fact, they are quite friendly and even start to bond with Rena Haze as she finally acknowledge them because of Mitama's antics. Despite this unexpected turn of event, Mitama doesn't let his guard down and continues to keep an eye on Rena Haze as her unusual connection to spirits begins to attract powerful entities and sketchy exorcists.Don't let that summary fool you: Mitama Security: Spirit Busters (ミタマセキュ霊ティ) is absolutely not a battle manga nor a Horror story, but a lighthearted Slice of Life Gag Series, most chapters being about our two protagonists meeting and reacting to a cast of colorful characters gravitating around Rena Haze including a muscled spirit with ten feet for a face, a Mon catching Yakuza, a talking salmon, and Babe Ruth.Mitama Security is written and illustrated by Tsurun Hatomune (who previously did the equally absurd Mukidashi no Hakuchou a.k.a. Naked Swan on Shōnen Jump+). Outside of the series proper, Hatomune also drew a tribute to the late NBA player Kobe Bryant. Kojime Edoichi and his illustrious ancestor Holmezaburo Edoichi are a parody of Hajime and Kosuke Kindaichi. Janca's way of treating spirits are inspired by Pokémon. He throws Yin Yang-shaped Poké Ball devices to catch spirits and calls Rena a "SpiREImon Master". The BODY group uses the same catching device and boldly claims that they're gonna "catch 'em all". Mr. Stripe showed a picture of Sadako as an example of spirit to his pupils. It was immediately mimicked by young Joh's spirits who physically recreated the TV set with one spirit creeping out of it. The entire Code 29 was filled with references to The Lion King, down to the entire chapter basically being a giant setup to Shakejiro singing "No worREIs for the rest of our days".note The original joke was that in Japanese "no worries" is pronounced the same as "no heart or lungs". Mitama's comic book that we wrote as a child included some impromptu cameos of famous characters such as Goku and his "Dragon Rubees". In Code 42, Rena and her friends watch a movie called Planet of the Plates. In some chapters, Mitama will be presented as a professional with weird mannerisms or a Big Brother Mentor giving questionable life advices (boke) while Rena Haze, shocked by his buffoonery and Insane Troll Logic, either leaves in frustration or succombs to the madness herself (tsukkomi). In others, Rena Haze will display a carefree and overly friendly attitude towards spirits, even dangerous looking ones (boke) while Mitama, suspicious and overprotective, makes an ass of himself trying to prevent dangers that never existed in the first place (tsukkomi). Soya is the wild card when he appears alongside them, being both a Foil to Mitama's eccentricity and paranoia and Rena's reserved and loving nature, switching to one or the other's side depending of what the chapter asks for. | |
