The first 8 volumes center on Thorfinn as a revenge-obsessed teenager, before a Time Skip into his life as a young adult facing a different kind of struggle.Ultimately the series has a lot of brutal (but fun!) battles. It's also fairly accurate about viking culture, so it teaches you stuff while you read (yes, it's that awesome). It's also got some pretty snappy dialogue and humorous little exchanges between characters both major and minor.It's a Historical Fiction retelling of the classical Viking sagas known as The Vinland Sagas, although focusing on Thorfinn Karlsefni rather than on Leif "The Lucky" Erikson.The series is licensed in English by Kodansha Comics USA, with 13 omnibus volumes released so far and deluxe, 3-in-1 editions on the way.A 24-episode anime series, covering the manga's first arc, was announced in 2018 and released on July 7th, 2019. It is animated by WIT Studio with supplemental animation by studio MAPPA. The irony is that vinland means farmland so the fan nickname is a proper translation of the manga's title.

Thorkell and his private army are all hardcore warriors and believers in traditional Norse mythology, and long for Valhalla. Thorkell says as much to Ragnar and Canute, and one of Thorkell's men comments that he believes dying at the hands of Thorkell is probably the highest honor for a Norse warrior, and if a proper death in battle didn't occur he'd choose to die fighting his boss. Near the end of the first arc, Bjorn takes a gut wound that will inevitably but slowly kill him from infection. Rather than wait around for the wound to kill him, he asks Askeladd for a Duel to the Death, implicitly so he can die the way he lived and perhaps earn his way into Valhalla. In the Baltic Sea War arc the Jomsvikings wind up in a Civil War over who will become their next leader. A captured Jomsviking about to be executed angrily/desperately begs to be allowed to fight someone to the death instead so that after his life as a soldier he'll have a chance of going to Valhalla, and is outraged when his request is ignored. In the same arc, a mook in Thorkell's army is on the edge of death after performing some great deeds, and thinks with satisfaction that he has earned his way into Valhalla. He's left horrified when he doesn't see any Valkyries coming for him and concludes that maybe there is no Valhalla, only The Nothing After Death. He tries to tell Thorkell and his other friends this, and beg them not to die, but is too far gone to say anything.

Season 2: Einar does more talking about how his home village was burned down by both the English and Danes at different points during the fighting, and instead of first seeing him as a captive on the slave ship, we see him living in his village before it is attacked by raiders, and then both the audience and Einar witness his mother and sister being killed by the raiders before he is carried off. Ketil as a young man lost a woman he loved to a rich and powerful man who named Ebbe who, it's implied, she didn't love or even want to marry. Ketil wanted to fight for her even if it meant provoking conflict with Ebbe, but Sverker convinced him not to do so, fearing what would happen if such a rich and powerful man held a grudge against them. So Ketil reluctantly gave her up... only for a rival of Ebbe's who envied Ebbe's wealth to kill both Ebbe and his would-be bride at their wedding. This likely ties into both Ketil's refusal to let go of Arnheid and reinforced Sverker's fears about how growing too rich or too prominent breeds resentment and attracts enemies. Gardar's death takes considerably longer, and unlike the manga where events are seen from Arnheid's point of view, we get to see Gardar's life flashing before his eyes, giving insight into both his time as a slave and his life before becoming a slave. There's also a Dying Dream he has where he goes home and is reunited with his son Hjalti. A detail is also added to when he escaped from slavery; in the anime he killed his master, but spared the man's wife and child. Flashbacks not present in the manga show Canute and Harald as children, and Harald being a kind older brother to a young Canute.

Vinland Saga (Manga) / int_23e32a30	comment	Genre Deconstruction: To anyone who's actually read them, it's easy to see how Vinland Saga series deconstructs the classical Icelandic Sagas by looking at the values of the time through a modern lens. Things that would be described as laudable or commonplace in the sagas are here seen as moral evils. Pacifism, humility, humanism and the ability to break a Cycle of Revenge are decried by the setting's society even though it's shown as the "right" thing to do, people aren't always fated to follow in their parents' footsteps and that's a good thing, and people who act like the stereotypical saga hero are usually seen as villainous or highly destructive. Though given most Icelandic sagas end with most of the cast dead (including the hero), Vinland Saga isn't threading new ground on the latter part.

For instance, the great explorer Thorfinn didn't join a band of vikings at the age of 6 to avenge his father's murder, followed by being sold into slavery for a good 8 years before beginning his expedition. Likewise, his father wasn't a Jomsviking and his grand uncle wasn't Thorkell the High. He may have been descended from the semi-legendary Bjorn Ironside, though. And Canute's rise to the throne presumably was not so dramatic as having his father assassinated by a descendant of Artorius, the figure King Arthur is based on. The extent that the Welsh keep to their old Roman identity and culture (since they were formerly Romano-British under the Western empire) is exaggerated for dramatic reasons. Also the Welsh Roman past and present as depicted falls victim to Hollywood History with their dress, technology and even naming conventions being centuries out of date, such that they would not look too out of place alongside the Romans of Asterix. Granted, they're supposed to be deliberately out of sync with the world around them. Related to the above, the series goes along with the theory that the historical King Arthur was (or was based on) a Romano-British warlord who fought the invading Anglo-Saxons (English). Disregarding the fact that the very existence of a "real" King Arthur is still hotly debated among historians, this lines up with the earliest depictions of Arthur, and with contemporary or near-contemporary figures whose historical existence is accepted like Ambrosius Aurelianus who entered early Arthurian legend as Arthur's uncle (and weirdly, one of the prototypes for Merlin). But the historical Arthur in-universe is implied to have been named Lucius Artorius Castus since Askeladd was named after him. Artorius Castus was a verifiably real person, but the theory in particular that he was the "real" King Arthur has been largely rejected since he lived at least three centuries apart from Ambrosius and supposedly Arthur, and he had little in common with Arthur besides somewhat similar names and having been in Britain. Even the time he served in Britain was as a senior officer with a desk job (camp prefect) in contrast with Arthur's warrior reputation.

While there is a fair amount of Charles Atlas Superpower going around, a number of the fighting techniques and tactics depicted are accurate. Thorfinn's method of withstanding 100 punches from a man much larger than him, for example, is a legitimate technique seen in boxing and various martial arts that boxers call "rolling with the punch", which involves turning your head in the same direction that your opponent's punch is traveling. If done correctly (and it's risky because it requires excellent timing) this will dissipate most of the force of the blow and turn it into a glancing blow instead of connecting flush.
