Violence Jack is a Post-Apocalyptic, Dark Fantasy anime and manga series by Go Nagai that was released from 1973 to 1990. A Stealth Sequel of sorts to Devilman, the series is particularly infamous for not only including large amounts of sex and gory violence, but also has cameos from several of Go Nagai's other manga as well. In fact, many of the chapters seem to be dedicated to taking classic Go Nagai series and then Deconstructing them by placing them in Violence Jack's brutal setting. The entire Kanto region of Japan is destroyed in both an earthquake and a volcanic eruption. Any survivors are now forced to fight for their lives, due to biker gangs and warlords having taken over. The worst of them is Takatora Dōma, also known as the Slum King, who practically has all of Kanto under his control.Luckily, there's Violence Jack, a mysterious, gigantic man with an equally gigantic knife. Unluckily, he's not exactly careful about collateral damage or danger to bystanders, although he's still the closest approximation to a good guy in this Crapsack World. Jack travels around Kanto, killing warlords and, eventually faces Dōma himself. However, just as it seems that peace is finally on the threshold of being returned to Kanto, an old foe from a previous world returns, revealing some surprising twists about who Jack really is.Violence Jack has three OVAs based on three different arcs from the manga (Harlem Bomber, Evil Town, and Hell's Wind). All three have been released in the US, the UK, Italy, and France, but were heavily censored (especially Evil Town). Italy got lucky with Evil Town and got the least censored version, leading many to seek it out. It wasn't until a few years later that uncensored editions were released. Later, in March 2022, Discotek Media announced that they had gotten their hands on the masters for the OVAs, and would be releasing completely uncensored HD remasters of all three on Blu-Ray later that year. The series got a short revival in 2005, a short 2 Volume adventure under the title of Shin Violence Jack. And 2021 saw the start of a remake under the pen of Yuu Kinutani, called Violence Jack 20XX.As for the manga, the only place it's ever been released outside of Japan is Italy and very few arcs have been scanlated into English (though this is slowly changing). No relation to Samurai Jack.

Bloodier and Gorier / Hotter and Sexier / Darker and Edgier: Even though the manga was already pretty gory and dark while running in a shounen magazine, it got even gorier, darker, and gained more sex, nudity, and Fanservice when it began running in a magazine geared toward middle-aged men. The OVAs themselves are much more darker adaptations of the manga story arcs, it added many cases of rape and related sexual violence.

Adaptational Villainy: Kawamori was never a good person to begin with in the manga, however he is significantly more evil in the OVA. While in both the manga and the anime he was involved in the rape of Aira and the other women, as well as shooting the mayor out of panic, the anime tones up his evilness by shooting a young girl at the beginning for stealing a loaf of ham, killing both the mayor and his allies then switching sides with Mad Saurus to save his own skin, murdering Rikki and attempting to rape Aira again. He meets a well deserved fate by being stabbed in the back by Blue.

Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Officer Kawamori from the Evil Town arc. He first appears to be a very ruthless, but well-meaning police officer trying to keep the peace. In reality, he is the worst kind of Dirty Cop and a repulsive psychopath who was involved in raping Aira and her female friends from section C. The Anime makes him even worse, where he murders and back-stabs his own men and then joining sides with Section C in a cowardly attempt to save his own sorry ass, and he attempts to rape Aira again, before being killed by Blue. Tahei Shibaki, the mayor of section A from the Evil Town arc, first seems like a friendly guy, until it is revealed that he, like Kawamori, was Involved in raping the females in section C.

Even Evil Has Standards: Mad Saurus and his Gang of Section B are disgusted upon hearing how the men of Section A drugged and raped the women of Section C months after the earthquake and went back to acting civil and upstanding. Blue remarks how at least Section B don't pretend to be anything other than monstrous bastards while the men of Section A are just as evil but put on a righteous face. They also don't approve of backstabbing. When Slum King goes to get revenge on the Cult of Dante for turning his Rogue-Drake Regiment into sex slaves, He encounters Jack shielding Jubei and Yamagishi, he tells his men that Jack isn't his enemy and slaughter the Cult of Dante instead.

After the End: Violence Jack is probably the first post-apocalyptic anime/manga series, even pre-dating Fist of the North Star. Kick the Dog: Until the battle against the Heretics, you could believe that Jack is a good guy and the rumors about him destroying towns are just that — after all, he's defending orphans and only being excessively murderous against bad people. Then he goes and beheads a little girl being used as a human shield, complete with Slasher Smile. This would be a Moral Event Horizon in any other work, except he's still not as monstrous as many of the other characters. In the Harlem Bomber OVA, he thanks Kenichi and girlfriend for saving his life by using their gyrocopter as a weapon to kill Bomber, resulting in Kenichi's death.

Character Development: Jack during his streaks of violent rampage in the post-apocalyptic world. Initially he made it clear that he didn't care whom he was fighting or saving — it was all collateral whether he felt like saving/killing one person here or there. However as the series progressed, Jack became quite focused on saving people, mostly women and children. After his new-found resolve, the body count of people who sought his help dropped considerably.

Two-Faced: Mad Saurus in the Evil Town OVA has a subtle case; the skin around one eye and upon one side of his nose is either burned red or flayed raw, presumably an injury he took during the hellquake. Combined with the way it distorts that side of his upper lip into a permanent sneer, and the blind, staring eye, it serves as a Red Right Hand.

Would Hurt a Child: Pretty much nearly all the villains in Violence Jack are not above either killing or abusing children. Even Jack himself wasn't exempt from this initially. In one of the early chapters, a yakuza takes a young girl hostage and threatens to kill her in the hopes of preventing Jack from killing him, unfortunately, he not only kills the yakuza, but also the young girl. Thankfully Jack moved out of this territory where he actually starts rescuing children.

Early-Installment Weirdness: The Harlem Bomber OVA compared to the following two. Jack looks far more monstrous and acts much more bestial, saying a single sentence in the entire movie, and is also closer to manga canon by being indifferently murderous towards everyone in his path; even his Pet the Dog moment (sparing Kenichi despite the latter stabbing him in the eye) is undone when he uses Kenichi and his girlfriend's Gyrocopter as a weapon, killing Kenichi in the process. The follow-up episodes, he looks less monstrous, is more talkative, and is generally a nicer guy — he still brutally massacres people, but only evil ones.

Body Horror: Mad Saurus' violent mutation after cannibalizing Blue in the Evil Town OVA. Takadora Doma was born with an incredibly overdeveloped musculature, so much it needs to be exerted all the time, else it would crush his bones and internal organs. The heavy armor he wears all the time is not for show, his life depends on it; even the mask is necessary to prevent the muscles from damaging his skull and brain, but it also causes his face to lose the skin, and it's not pretty.

Invincible Hero: Jack himself, who is physically stronger than a good number of the bad guys. Though the story seems to be well aware of this, since, in a similar vein to Vampire Hunter D, Jack is treated as more of a Deus ex Machina that the characters rely on fight stronger enemies that they themselves can't take on. And considering how vile the villains in this series are, it's still enjoyable to see Jack hand their asses to them. He does avert this trope a few times, particularly when he's up against Takatora Doma, Mad Saurus, and even Sumo wrestlers at one point.

Psycho Lesbian: Rose from the Harlem Bomber arc, although as her only sex scene was raping one of the women she intends to break in as a sex slave, she may be a Depraved Bisexual. In the Evil Town OVA; Blue (who, as Mad Saurus's lover, counts more as Depraved Bisexual) and Bitch of the Mad Saurus gang of Area B, eagerly join the men of Areas A and B in raping the women of Area C. Blue actually stabs Kawamori to death with a crowbar so she can take his place raping Aila Mu.

Animal Motif: Jack and tigers. His art in the Harlem Bomber OAV makes it more blatant, giving him a mouthful of a "tiger-like" fangs. In the subsequent OAVs, he has pronounced canines (to make the teeth reference more subtle), and his wild hair style branches across his cheeks, to invoke a tiger's whiskers/stripes.

Pragmatic Adaptation: The arcs the OVAs cover, Harlem Bomber (Harem Bomber), Evil Town and Hell’s Wind, are actually set quite far apart in the manga; that’s why Jack’s behavior in Harlem Bomber seems completely odd compared to how much of a nicer person he is in Evil Town, in the Manga he had already gone through several experiences that made him become a better person.

Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Mad Saurus in the Evil Town OVA and his moll, Blue. He's devastated when he finds Jack killed Blue whilst he was badly injured and struggling to catch up, breaking down weeping as he calls her the only one he ever loved. Then he snaps, eats her corpse and promptly mutates into a monster that almost manages to kill Jack in revenge. When he dies, he has a dying ramble about how happy he is to be with Blue again in hell. Zuba-Ban is genuinely concerned for his sister Jeanne's well being, so much that he decides to let her free upon realizing that she had found love.

Fangs Are Evil: Violence Jack's canines, although of a subtlety that would normally deem them Cute Little Fangs (except in the Harlem Bomber OVA), are a warning of his ruthlessly bloodthirsty nature. Mad Saurus has vaguely fang-like, peg-teeth, as if he needed more of a sign of his evilness. After cannibalizing Blue's corpse and mutating, he sprouts full-on fangs.

Came Back Strong: Near the end of the story, Jack reveals Satan unintentionally did this when he resurrected him back when he was Akira. Due to how strong his despair was over killing Akira, he made Jack just as strong as the despair he felt. This ends up making Devilman as powerful as Satan himself, though lacking most of Satan's other unique abilities.

All Love Is Unrequited: During Jack’s first confrontation against the Dragon Army, it is heavily implied that Jun Honoo developed feelings for the giant after saving her during the Hell’s Wind arc. Once getting shot by the Dragon soldiers, Jun is then trapped in another dimension having a rather suggestive healing vision after which Jack apologizes to Jun and sends her outside of Kanto. It is hinted that Jack acknowledges Jun’s love, but cannot return it because he isn’t meant to live as an ordinary human being. The same could be said of Child Jack and the sassy schoolgirl he saved in The Backcountry Academy

Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The female Decoy Protagonist in the Harlem Bomber arc insists she and her long-sought boyfriend have to save Jack from the OVA's Big Bad, even though her boyfriend Kenichi insists it's too dangerous. She ignores him and throws Jack a rope, saving his life... and Jack uses the rope to pull the gyrocopter out of the air and crush Bomber. The crash sends her and Kenichi flying, and Kenichi suffers an implicitly fatal head injury. When she regains consciousness, they're all dead/gone, and so she has nothing to do but wander hopelessly off into the wasteland again.

Gainax Ending: The Harlem Bomber OVA ends with Jack calling down a lightning bolt to heal his injuries, followed by turning into a giant golden bird and flying off, with the only surviving character following him to who knows where. It comes out of nowhere without any kind of explanation. Although, given the canon that he's Akira Fudoh reincarnated, it's sort of explainable. But not by much. It's later revealed that the golden eagle is a manifestation of Jack's that watches over and protects every arc's respective protagonist, granting them the strength to strive against evil in the process.

Back from the Dead: Violence Jack is Akira Fudoh reincarnated as the Human Avatar of Death. Jinmen reappears in Shin Violence Jack, having possessed the leader of the New Shu Army, even showing off his ability to take the souls of his victims into his shell. The Slum Queen and Miki Makimura appear at the end of volume 1 of Shin Violence Jack. The former refers to herself as "Queen", while the latter has the body of a dog. However, dog-Miki is actually revealed to be her face, with the rest of her body locked up in the Skull King's dungeon at the Skull Castle. At the end of Shin Violence Jack's second volume, she gets her face back and becomes some sort of warrior woman with Cerberus as her steed. The Yakuza Heretic leader whom Jack beheaded at the Earthquake Fortress in volume two of the original Violence Jack manga returns as a demon who challenges Jack to a rematch. Before Jack can respond, the Heretic leader is attacked by the townspeople and burned to death. Shin Violence Jack also introduces Killer Sara, who is secretly Sirene.

Ambition Is Evil: In the El Dorado arc, there were rival gangs attempting to gather large amount of gold bars and expand their territory. Both his partner and Jack notice, but faces Karmic Death when the leader of the Flesh Eaters kills him with a rocket launcher. The boss also dies when Jack slices her vertically (but not enough to cut her in half). Tellingly, greed will give you a very nasty demise.

Balance Between Good and Evil: It's revealed by Jack to Kid and Lady Jack that everything that has happened, from Kanto's destruction, Takatora Doma's rise to power, the villains of each arc, the heroes of each arc, etc. has all been a massive conflict between Ryo Asuka's darkness(the villains) and his light(the heroes). The feud between his light and darkness continued to escalate and create more Literal Split Personalities of Ryo Asuka or gathered to each side people whose hearts aligned with both-locking them into an endless struggle. Only through Jack's constant interference and slaying of villains does the balance tip. Unfortunately, Honey Kisaragi failed to save Ryo and he became Satan once again to destroy the world he created. Jack becomes Devilman and manages to end the conflict for good by stopping Satan from destroying the world he created as they disappear in a ball of light.

Eye Scream: A particularly painful example in the first OVA, in which Kenichi throws a knife at Jack and it lodges into his eye. Jack barely even reacts, and lets Kenichi live because he knows that he's also trying to stop the Harem Bomber. There is also Jim "Z" Mazinger from the manga, who has to be guided by Koji after losing his sight in a karate match. Jack also falls prey to this after being tortured and enslaved by Kraken's men in the Kraken/ Naojiro Oyama arc. Jack regenerates, anyway.

Until the battle against the Heretics, you could believe that Jack is a good guy and the rumors about him destroying towns are just that — after all, he's defending orphans and only being excessively murderous against bad people. Then he goes and beheads a little girl being used as a human shield, complete with Slasher Smile. This would be a Moral Event Horizon in any other work, except he's still not as monstrous as many of the other characters.

Armies Are Evil: Generally, the biggest villains will have their own armies, starting with Takatora Doma himself. Subverted in the case of good guys like orphan boy Ryou Takuma and others who lead armies against Takatora. Special mention goes to the Marvel Pirates in Shin Violence Jack, who are all former U.S. Marines who decided to go rogue and steal treasure from the now-partially submerged Kanto region. They use their training to murder, rape and pillage throughout Tokyo Bay.

Cloudcuckoolander: The New Shu Army in Shin Violence Jack. They are a group of Chinese and Japanese actors and extras who were filming a movie based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. When the Kanto Hellquake struck, they went collectively insane and began to think that they were real heroes from China's Three Kingdoms era. Their three leaders seek to take Kanto, a "land stripped of history and culture," and turn it into a tyrannical state for the strong, using the ancient China motif to keep their men unified. In that respect they resemble Caesar from Fallout: New Vegas. Oh, and they are also Ax-Crazy killers who terrorize the populace. And a good proportion of them have become hosts to demons as well.

Lighter and Softer: Despite the notes about the OVAs under Darker and Edgier above, both the OVA version of Evil Town and of Hell's Wind are far lighter than the manga, or even the Harlem Bomber OVA. Jack is shown in almost "good guy" terms, being willing to use his capacity for violence only on scumbags who deserve it and deliberately trying to help people who are innocent. Hell, most of the "good guys" in the second and third OVAs actually survive, even if they do get tortured and/or raped.

Hijacked by Ganon: Takatora Doma, the Slum King, is the supreme warlord of the post-apocalyptic Kanto region with no equal. It was by Satan's own will that Takatora reigned; except that when Takatora's slave, Ryo Asuka, sacrificed himself to help Jack kill the warlord, Satan came back and quickly 'killed' Takatora, (in reality, simply relegating him back to his true self as Satan's second in command, Zennon) wanting to resume the eternal grudge between Violence Jack (Akira Fudou) and Ryo Asuka (Satan) in yet another epic fight. This backfires.

Continuity Snarl: This series is a sequel to Devilman, but so is Devilman Lady, making it a complicated topic. Fans have been discussing it for years, noting that Lady has much more solid connections to the original than Jack, but without having an official answer to which is supposed to be the true sequel. At the end, Nagai stated that Violence Jack should be treated as its own universe, which implies Lady is meant to be Devilman's true continuation. However, considering that the franchise's world is on a constant loop thanks to God's continuous punishment against Satan, it is also possible to believe that both Jack and Lady are simply separate iterations of the cycle.

Unbuilt Trope: Violence Jack was probably the first After the End manga published in Japan. Compared to it, manga set in a post-apocalyptic setting, such as Fist of the North Star, are Lighter and Softer. The manga devotes its entire first chapter to showing how it all happened — with plentiful Nightmare Fuel scenes of people dying awfully, lovingly depicted by Go Nagai — including a very tense build-up to the earthquake — providing plentiful geographical details and giving a death toll. And afterwards it shows that the resulting world is a Crapsack World where people suffer horrific death and abuse at the hands of the worst villains Go Nagai has put to paper, things ALWAYS go From Bad to Worse, and The Hero is a borderline Villain Protagonist who does not feel compelled to protect helpless people and only intervenes into a fight if something draws his attention or he would like to bust some heads.

Earn Your Happy Ending: Even if the story is overtly cynical, any characters who actually survive can finally have peace prior to their hellish experience.

Canon Immigrant: A large chunk of the characters featured in Violence Jack originated from Go Nagai's other notable works, including Mazinger Z, Harenchi Gakuen, God Mazinger, Shutendouji, Cutey Honey, and many others. Only here, their backstories are largely rewritten, and some even have their ages changed. Aira Mu originates from God Mazinger. Koji Kabuto, Sayaka Yumi, Boss, Nuke, Mucha, Dr. Hell, Baron Ashura, viscount pygman/count broken (who are now both the same character here), Jun Hono and Tetsuya Tsurugi all come from Mazinger Z Rikki and Iron Kaiser came from Shutendouji Shingo Susa and Gouda come from Susanoo Mondo Saotome, Tatsuma Mido and Tsubasa Nishikiori come from Guerilla High Honey Kisaragi comes from Cutey Honey, and her six friends, Hurricane, Idol, Fancy, Cutey, Flash and Misty are all based on Honey's several different disguises. Iyamon and Bau from the 1972 Devilman anime appear in Shin Violence Jack as members of the Skull King's army, and are rather unusual examples in that they're the sole demons in the series that aren't original or returning from the main manga series. Kikuno, Naojiro, Goemon, and Kichiza are all from The Abashiri Family.

Pet the Dog: Jack uses his necromancy skills to revive Shingo's Tiger in King of Brutes. Jack spares Jun from her suffering and a lifetime of hatred by transporting her with his powers to a peaceful dimension. In a rare case of humane mercy, Slum King himself refrains from fighting Jack after realizing the giant was shielding Yamagishi and Jubei in Advent of Evil .
