DIIV is an American shoegazing band from Brooklyn, which began as the solo project of Soft Black/Beach Fossils guitarist Zachary Cole Smith. Originally named Dive after the Nirvana song, it was changed to DIIV after Smith learned that was already a band named Dive, a 1990s Belgian industrial group (Smith says it wasn't due to legal pressure, but purely out of respect for the original band). The reasoning for the name DIIV and the aquatic themes of their debut album Oshin is due to the band members being water signs. The band originally consisted of Smith, guitarist Andrew Bailey, bassist Devin Ruben Perez, and drummer Colby Hewitt. Hewitt left the band in 2015 due to drug addiction, and was replaced by Colin Caulfield.Their debut album, Oshin, was released in 2012 to favorable reviews. Their followup, Is the Is Are, is a double album released on February 5, 2016. | |
