LADYBABY was a Japanese Kawaii Metal Idol group. Following in the footsteps of Babymetal, it began as the unlikely combination of two cute Japanese girls and a male, long-haired, bearded, cross-dressing Australian wrestler turned Death Metal singer. The original lineup consisted of: Ladybeard (real name Richard Magarey) Rie Kaneko (金子理江 – the older [brown-haired] girl) Rei Kuromiya (黒宮れい – the younger [black-haired] girl)The project was announced by Magarey in March 2015. Their first music video, "Nippon Manju"* (Nippon is one of the two native ways to say "Japan", and manju is a Japanese confectionery often rendered as "red bean bun" in English due to the sweet adzuki-bean paste inside, so the song's name could translate to "Japan Sweet-bun"), hit Youtube that July 4th and quickly went viral. Since its initial upload, it has been viewed over twenty-five million times. Over the next year, the trio followed up with more singles. Japanese music fans, in their best tradition of embracing the eccentric, were very enthusiastic about the group. So were people overseas, and the group took advantage of Magarey's ability to jump language barriers to perform shows in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, London, and Cologne to delighted fans.In mid-2016, a poorly timed contract dispute resulted in Ladybeard leaving the group. Rie and Rei opted to continue the project as a duo, rebranding themselves "The Idol Formerly Known As Ladybaby". The new songs were often extremely different in style, resulting in a Broken Base.In 2017, Rei abruptly left. Her official reason for quitting was an acute throat problem that, if not dealt with, could permanently damage her ability to sing. Her statement also heavily implied there were other factors at work.Rie announced a memorial compilation album entitled Beside U, to be released in Japan two months later. She also said that she intended to hold open auditions for new members to join her. On February 25th 2018, she revealed the new lineup (and the original "LADYBABY" branding albeit with new logo), consisting of: Rie Kaneko (金子理江) – Lead singer (only original member left) Nana Ikeda (池田菜々) – Singer and Rapper Emily Arima (有馬えみり) – Screamer and backup singer (often has pink hair) Fuka Karasawa (唐沢風花) – Singer (and the only one under 18 at debut time)Rie subsequently announced a tour in Spring 2018 which culminated in the reborn group's first solo live in Shibuya on April 21st. In May 2018, Ladybeard temporarily returned to the group as a featured guest vocalist on the song "Biri-Biri Money". On October 27th 2018, they performed a solo concert entitled "We Are Ladybaby", their first show with a live backing band (known as "The Chaos") since Rei's final show exactly one year earlier. They would perform another show with The Chaos five months later to cap off their "Invisible Rice" tour – this show has been given a DVD release (the first since 2016). They continued to tour the small-club circuit in Japan and perform at various alt-Idol festivals and Two-Man Lives, along with the occasional international show in Asia, Europe, and the USA.On October 29th 2019, the group announced it would "Suspend Activities" at the conclusion of its SEE YOU Reburn TOUR on January 13th 2020, with a compilation album of the same name also released on that day – a DVD of the farewell performance came out a few months later. While there were plans for occasional one-off reunions throughout 2020, the worldwide SARS-CoV2 pandemic ensured those never happened, and the girls went their separate ways.For awhile, the only end-stage member still active in the music scene was Emily, who became the lead singer for the band Shades, for whom she also served as lyricist; and created a Soundcloud where she would upload new music, often a mix of screamo and Vocaloid. In August 2021, she was hired by Alt-Idol group PassCode to replace its original screamer Yuna Imada who had retired due to failing health. Around the same time, Rie suddenly returned to the scene with a new solo project, "Ilie". As with Rie's previous solo runs, the music is much more Indie-Pop and more than a little confusing.Meanwhile Rei, as she has been since before Ladybaby ever began, remains the frontwoman of her and her sister Aya's rock band BRATS. Ladybeard eventually decided, after his previous singing/wrestling partner Reika Saiki suffered a nasty injury in the ring, to resurrect the original Ladybaby 1.0 concept as Babybeard.However, at the very end of 2022, suddenly and surprisingly Rei and Rie came back together as a duo named (appropriately enough) REIRIE, whose first live concert is scheduled to happen on March 25, 2023.Ladybaby's official website is here. Genre Roulette: Even more than most groups, alt-Idol fusion or otherwise, Ladybaby has never been tethered to a single style of music. Individual releases can and probably will have songs with wildly different tones. Hell, their very first single had this – "Ultra☆Lucky" sounds absolutely nothing like "Nippon Manju"; the latter is the speed-metal-plus-cute-with-growling the group is known for, but the former is full-on J-Pop with no growling whatsoever (yes, Ladybeard actually sings). "Pelo" and "Easter Bunny", both of which are punctuated with growling, were paired with the soft-rock "Lady Baby Blue". "Pinky! Pinky!", which arguably has some of Ladybaby's harshest riffs, was released alongside "Generation Hard Knocks". The latter is a slow melodic pop ballad that Rie is unable to perform without crying. "Haten Ni Raimei", the girls' 2019 single whose title track rivals "Pinky!" for heaviness, is pared with "LB 4 Future" (featuring more Emily screaming)… and the soft-rock ballad "God's Not". | |

Evidently, this was just as annoying a mouthful for Rie as it was for the fans, so she changed the name back in 2018, though the group got a new logo. Several post-Beard videos show them getting extremely close to each other, Holding Hands, kissing (typically pecks, a few times on the lips). How much of it was genuine and how much of it was just playing to the audience is unknown. However, there's plenty of reason to conclude Rie did not take Rei's departure well – the solo songs she made after Rei left practically scream "Not Over It". As noted above, they were doing this during the Ladybeard era too. From the group's second live show in July 2015 we have Rie and Rei (both still underage at the time) locking lips. Here is another example from a few months later; the tweet even starts with "kiss!" if it wasn't already obvious what Rei is doing. Showing this was the entire point of "Escape Dream", a music video with Rie and Rei filmed before Ladybaby even existed.† The original upload is long since deleted, though it was written about at the time and dated to January 2015. Ladybaby formed less than four months after. When it was filmed is unknown, though given how short Rie's hair is, Fall 2014 is likely. Anime Hair: Every girl associated with the group (except Rei) has toyed with this. As you can see in the photo above, 2018-era screamer Emily Arima's naturally black hair is pink. The actual shade has varied from neon to pastel to nonexistent except for the tips. In July 2018, Nana dyed her black hair pink, though she went for cotton-candy instead of neon. She later dyed it strawberry blonde (and chopped off at least 30cm), then back to black. As of Summer 2019, her hair is a very very light pink, almost white, and extremely short — she wears wigs and hair extensions. Rie, whose hair is naturally brown, has been known to dye her hair odd colors. In the "Easter Bunny" video she has maroon tips Photos and video shot at the beginning of the Foursome Era show her hair with a reddish or orange sheen depending on the light. She dyed it back closer to her natural brown later in the year. In early 2019, Rie sort of went off the deep end on the dyeing front, eventually ending up with a sort of silver with greenish sheen. Later, with Fuka's help, she painted it purple. In September 2020, her longtime friend and former choreographer Mikity posted a photo of himself with Rie in which her hair is dyed bubblegum pink (so are her eyebrows). Along with food, the country's famously low crime rate, cute girls, etc. "Agé-Agé Money" has, as is typical for Ladybaby 1.0, extremely upbeat music, but the lyrics are actually a not-too-subtle condemnation of the mechanics of 21st century economics (specifically as applied in Japan, plus the USA where the music video was filmed) in which wages barely keep up with inflation. The music video can also count as a hard-rock take on The Mel Brooks Number since Rie, Rei, and Ladybeard are wearing absurd garish costumes throughout the entire thing. If one counts his time with the group from the first promo video on March 25th 2015 until his official departure on July 31st 2016, that's a total of 495 days (exactly 16 months plus a week). If one only counts live performances, well, their debut was on May 31st 2015 and the last show with Ladybeard was April 15th 2016. That's 321 days, or just 10½ months that the original Ladybaby trio actually performed together. Note 1 To math this out further: Rei worked alongside Rie for just over three years including the pre-LB video "Escape Dream". Counting from LB's first promo video to her withdrawal on 2017/11/17, Rei was part of Ladybaby for 968 days (a week shy of 32 months). While the TIFKA era was shorter than the Ladybeard era by three weeks – 473 days to 495 – Rie and Rei performed as a duo longer than they performed with Ladybeard; their first TIFKA performance was September 17th 2016 and their last was October 28th 2017, a total of 407 days. Note 2 Rie and Rei also officially released more songs as a duo than they did with Ladybeard. The Ladybeard era had three singles with two songs apiece, and the One Year Best compilation adds "School Of Hard Knocks" for a total of seven.
