TWICE (Hangul: 트와ì´ìŠ¤) is a South Korean Girl Group formed by JYP Entertainment in 2015. They debuted through the reality show Sixteen, where sixteen girls competed against each other to decide who would be the ones to debut in a long-planned project of the agency. Eventually, nine winners – seven who won outright, plus one each based on audience votes and JYP's personal recommendation – were chosen and became members of the group. Of the members, five of them are Korean (Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung), three are Japanese (Momo, Sana, Mina) and one is Taiwanese (Tzuyu). The group debuted on October 20, 2015 with the EP The Story Begins and it was a massive success. The title track "Like Ooh-Ahh" broke records for K-pop debuts, and the girls landed numerous endorsements, claimed to be enough to maintain JYPE as a company for 10 years. Record-breaking trends continued with their second EP Page Two, which also landed the group their first music show wins.During promotion of Page Two, Taiwanese member Tzuyu was caught in a political proxy war between China and Taiwan which made international news. She got backlash for waving Taiwan's flag in a Korean TV show*  (provided by a staff member to promote Korean-Taiwanese friendship), forcing her to make a video apology. Reactions to this were extreme, from likely influencing the Taiwanese elections already scheduled for that period in favor of the pro-independence party*  (that party, the DPP, was set to win anyway, but the mistreatment of Tzuyu by JYPE at the behest of China is believed by political scientists to have had an effect on over a million young Taiwanese voters), to the Chinese government censoring searches for the controversy in order to defend her.In June 2017, Twice officially debuted in Japan, with their first Japanese-language EP #TWICE – adaptations of their first 5 Korean title songs (coupled with the Korean originals) – being certified Platinum, and made their first live appearance in Tokyo that July. They later followed this up with Japan-only singles and albums, technically also making them a J-Pop group. While Twice usually perform their Japanese songs only in Japan, they sang some of the most popular ones ("Doughnut" and "Celebrate" for example) for western audiences during the Ready To Be world tour. The group's mainstream success in Korea during their early years led to Twice being rather controversially dubbed The Nation's Girl Group, the title once held by Girls' Generation. Less controversially, Twice is the best selling current girl group in Kpop, with not only mega-hit singles but also selling more albums than every other girl group in Kpop combined in 2017.In November 2022, they became the first Korean girl-group to sell 10 million albums domestically. Two months earlier, they cemented their status as Household Names among American K-pop fans by becoming the first Korean girl-group to have had three albums make Billboard's Top 10, two of those in the Top 3, while "The Feels" became their first song to earn Gold certification by the RIAA.Twice made their first international appearance at KCON-LA in July 2016, along with several other groups including BTS and Girls' Generation.*  Twice would also appear at KCON in 2017 and 2018; they missed 2019 due to being on tour in Japan at the time. They embarked upon their first international headline tour in early 2017. Twicelights, their 3rd international tour, included their first headline shows in the West (specifically the USA and Mexico City). Their early 2022 North American tour was successful enough to be followed by two more sold-out "Encore" shows at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles – the first time any Korean Girl Group had played, much less sold out, a stadium show in the USA.*  Six months later, Blackpink would finish the North American leg of their tour in the same stadium, having already performed at several venues in America and Canada of similar capacity. A couple days later, Twice performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, marking their first in-person appearance on an American TV show (earlier performances were remote due to the pandemic). In May 2022, JYPE, through Twice's social media channels, announced they would release Nayeon's first solo EP – a Self-Titled Album – the next month, marking the first commercial solo music release for any of the members. In 2023, Jihyo released her long-teased solo EP, and the three Japanese members released a group EP aimed (naturally) at the Japanese market. Worth noting that, thus far, ALL of Twice's solo/unit releases have been promoted through the group's primary channels rather than creating new channels for them.On July 12th 2022, JYPE formally announced that all nine members had renewed their contracts, making Twice the agency's first girl-group to break the so-called "seven-year-curse", and one of the very few Korean groups to do so without losing or replacing any members.note  The only other JYPE group to break the curse is Boy Band 2PM but they lost a member early on. Got7 doesn't count due to leaving JYPE once their contracts expired and then re-forming as an independent group. BTS and Red Velvet are the other major groups to have gone over seven years at the same company without any lineup change. While BLACKPINK did renew their group contract with YG Entertainment, they notably did NOT renew their individual contracts, which the other mentioned groups did.Two members thus far have had to go on hiatus at separate times for mental and/or physical issues – Mina in 2019, followed by Jeongyeon from 2020-2021. Unusually for K-Pop, fans (especially outside Korea) have been very accepting of this and appreciative of the girls being candid about their issues.Like many other K-pop acts, Twice has also starred in reality shows. Their current one, Time to Twice, has had new episodes uploaded on Fridays to the group's official YouTube channel since 2020, with a new theme every three to six weeks.

Hotter and Sexier: The concept for "FANCY" is more mature than their previous singles. Even the MV uses a darker colour scheme. They've since been slowly cranking it up to a subtle degree with each passing comeback, as they grow more experienced, thus aging them out of the cuter side of themselves that was most evident from their debut to Fancy. Their tours are an even more overt display of this happening; their Ready To Be tour has them cranking up the sexiness quite a lot more compared to past tours, for example.

Faux Yay: Sometimes, like when Jeongyeon and Nayeon pretended to make out on stage. Lips did not touch, but it was pretty prolonged, with the live audience going absolutely nuts. Sana by contrast is very affectionate towards those she cares about and has at least once (Tokyo Dome 2019) gone on a very real kissing spree at the end of a show. Usually on the cheek, but still… it brings the misheard lyric from "Heart Shaker" (Is Sana Gay) to a whole new level. During one variety show, Nayeon went up to Mina and, completely blocking any cameras, appeared to kiss Mina on the lips. She pulled away wiping her lips with a smug expression as Mina sat stunned. The other members asked if lips actually touched, to which Nayeon replied "I'll leave that to your imagination." (her go-to answer when asked questions about dating and such). Many months later, Mina said they did.

My Friends... and Zoidberg: Invoked in Momo's special video for "Like Ooh-Ahh", as the rest of the group can't be bothered to dance along with her when she's not looking. Tzuyu's video is similar, with the difference being that the others are in the back of the bus and are more interested in interacting with the zombies outside while she's not looking at all. Parts of the "Knock Knock" video show clips of the group chucking pillows with whoever is standing in the middle of the shot. When it's Tzuyu's turn, the other members are too busy fighting amongst themselves to pay attention to her.

Blind Without 'Em: While the majority of Twice members wear glasses when not working, this is most often discussed regarding Nayeon, whose eyesight is absurdly poor. When she appeared on Korean TV show The Manager, the hosts noted how thick her lenses are. Nayeon sometimes pokes fun at her terrible eyesight during livestreams and admitted she uses colored prescription contact lenses during performances.

Darker and Edgier: Eyes Wide Open is by far their darkest album, being heavily influenced by 80s synthpop and bearing almost no resemblance to most of their other albums, especially their 2015-18 releases. It has themes of descending into evil ("I Can't Stop Me"), the painful side of falling in love ("Hell In Heaven"), insomnia ("Up No More"), struggling to accept a parting ("Handle It"), and feeling distant in relationships ("Behind the Mask"). Their second original English single, "Moonlight Sunrise", is this to its predecessor, "The Feels", by being a sensual R&B song more in line with their usual post-"Fancy" sound than the more upbeat disco sound of "The Feels".

Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Well, single girl seeks good boy, as they all were so much younger at the time (Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu were underage). But the lyrics for "Like OOH-AHH" talk about a narrator who's pretty In Love with Love, except she won't give herself to someone so easily. They even chant "Let me see how you're gonna treat me!" when the beat drops.

The Stoic: Tzuyu is prone to being rigid and not expressing emotions easily, especially on camera. In fact, she didn't cry on camera until June 2016 according to Jeongyeon. She doesn't even get scared easily earning admiration from fans. She's been growing out of this more as she gets older however, and even her fellow members note much of this is nervousness over being shown on screen that's fading with time & experience; she's very expressive when not under pressure to perform. She exploited this in her vlog for her mission on the Ready to Be tour, in which her unnies noted she was being more energetic than usual. It turned out that her mission was to get at least three people to say something along the lines of "Why are you so energetic today?"

The Quiet One: Mina and Tzuyu, despite the latter also being one of the snarkiest members. There was even an interview clip that went viral because neither of them said a word amid a group conversation. A late 2022 episode of their reality show Time to Twice had Mina sleep through the whole episode, saying pretty much nothing. They're both very shy, and it shows when they're left alone on VLive. Tzuyu's quietness extended into her acting roles in a 2016 SNL Korea episode, especially the parody of the k-drama The K2, in which she only had four lines in the ten-minute sketch. Mina for her part is so naturally quiet that she tends to have less than five minutes of talking in most of TWICE's content. There was one episode of TTT when she slept through pretty much the whole thing, something which did not go unnoticed by ONC Es. That said, as of the Ready to Be World Tour era, Tzuyu has become more openly chatty on camera as shown in her appearances in other members' TW-Logs.

Neat Freak: In interviews and on variety shows, the group has discussed how Jeongyeon was in charge of making sure their shared living space was tidy and hygienic. They also shared good-natured stories about how she would post pictures of their mess into their group chat, as a method of shaming each member into taking responsibility for whatever hadn't yet been cleaned up. Jeongyeon has tried to explain this away as being respectful to the members who were far from home and had to have all their belongings with them, but she has thus far been unable to explain why she would cope with her early career stresses by furiously vacuuming. Related to the above, Jeongyeon also occasionally veers close to Safety Freak territory, though not unjustified. When shooting the rooftop scene in their very first music video, Chaeyoung stepped into a drainage hole and barely avoided tripping and falling. Jeongyeon took it upon herself to gather up all the gravel and stones she could find to level out the surface and prevent further accidents.

invoked Sana is terrified of thunder to the point she immediately collapses into the fetal position and needs someone to comfort her in the event of an especially loud burst. This was once caught on camera while she was leaving Inchon Airport during a storm. It was also (unintentionally?) exploited and retained during the Korean version of the "TT" music video where Sana, dressed as a superhero, crouches on a roof but hears fake thunder – the metal sheet type often used on sets – and flinches.

As pointed out by Jeongyeon during the reaction video, it's relatively easy to turn "Im Nayeon" into "I'm Nayeon", which happens twice during the video, once when she throws her jacket up to hang off the "I" (where it stays until the end) and at the end when she's lying over a smaller sign and lazily hangs her hand between the "I" and "M".

Hidden Depths: Across their discography, there are forays into a wide range of genres, even Japanese style city-pop in "Say Something", but this extends to their respective singing styles as well (both Dahyun and Chaeyoung, TWICE's go-to rappers, have very clear and soothing singing voices, while Momo is no slouch in the rapping department). Notably, Jihyo has a characteristic powerful singing voice and very rarely uses falsetto, which makes her performance in "First Time" (which she also wrote the lyrics for) stand out, for singing in falsetto for almost all her lines yet remaining distinctive.

The Baby of the Bunch: Invoked constantly by the other members with Tzuyu, the tallest member but also the youngest (thus the occasional nickname "Big Baby"). Even years after she became an adult, the other members go out of their way to not tease her too hard and often give her a pass when she fails challenges. Tzuyu herself said Jeongyeon continues to treat her like a baby to the present day. Even after seven years together, she remains everyone's adorable dongsaeng. Chaeyoung also gets this sometimes due to being only seven weeks older than Tzuyu, being noticeably the shortest member, and sporting a babyface into her early-20's. Most of the time it's her unnies poking fun at her height, although she does have occasional moments of immaturity. Nayeon pretends to be this on-camera – she's the oldest but will often act childish to get a reaction from the others. This earned her the nickname "Fake Maknae" (contrasting Tzuyu, the real one).

Lethal Chef: At first, none of them could cook. Their reality show, "TWICE's Elegant Private Life," showed the girls struggling to make pancakes. They've gotten better at it over the years, as they've been able to cook potato pancakes and chicken feet. Jeongyeon and Momo have since shown themselves to be decent cooks – Jeongyeon's father is a high-profile chef after all, while Momo loves food too much to afford constantly eating out. And as shown in the Time to Twice Cooking Battle, they're fully capable of cooking even somewhat complex dishes under enforced restrictions.

The Driver: Jeongyeon normally gets this job and an outfit or a hero role to go with it.note  This was a natural choice. While several members have said they earned their licenses, Jeongyeon drives regularly – she's known to still live with her family and drives to work rather than walking or taking public transport. So, she won't look fake behind the wheel. No word on if she's bulldozer certifed though. The motorcycle that breaks up the staid dinner party in "I Can't Stop Me" is driven by Jeongyeon. In the video for "BDZ", Jeongyeon is absent for most of the espionage and sabotage action (she's running ops in Twice's hideout) until turning up at the controls of the titular bulldozer used to save the day. Jeongyeon gets the first verse of "Yes or Yes" at the wheel of a vintage European car in a chauffeur's outfit. While an animated JYP drives the getaway van in "Candy Pop", he can't follow the group into the real world, so Jeongyeon takes the wheel for the final stunt jump.

Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?
 TWICE (Music) / int_5beef860
comment
Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: More than one member has this… Dahyun is deathly afraid of heights, as shown during the group's trip to Switzerland and the Thrill Walk. She was practically attached to Sana's hip when they were slowly walking the entire way down. Momo is afraid of heights as well. Unlike Dahyun, she didn't even go through the Thrill Walk. She ended up going an alternate route down with some of the managers to meet up with the other members. Momo is also very averse to anything which might induce an 'adrenaline rush' as shown in the group's package tour to Da Nang, Vietnam. The high speed (for a cable car, at least) journey to Bana Hills left her very jittery, while she did her best to go as slowly as possible down the roller coaster track. invoked Sana is terrified of thunder to the point she immediately collapses into the fetal position and needs someone to comfort her in the event of an especially loud burst.

Inconsistent Spelling: Has happened with more than one member. Jeongyeon's given name was originally transliterated as "Jungyeon" as shown in this reveal for SIXTEEN. It changed to the current spelling by the time Twice debuted, but some longtime fans still use the older spelling. Nayeon's family name is transliterated as "Lim" in official subtitles despite being pronounced by her and spelled as 임 ("Im") in Korean. The latter spelling is used by fans and That Other Wiki. Nayeon used the latter spelling for her solo Self-Titled Album. The reason for the discrepancy is rules changes for both Romanization and Hangeul itself since the Korean War – her family name was traditionally spelt "림" (Lim/Rim).

Five-Aces Cheater
 TWICE (Music) / int_6dec83b9
comment
Five-Aces Cheater: Perhaps the most unifying quality of the members of Twice is their eager and shameless willingness to cheat at every low-stakes challenge or competition they're confronted with in any Korean variety show. In the JTBC show "Carefree Traveller" documenting the group's package tour of Vietnam, host Jung Hyung-don casually suggests to three group members a version of truth or dare with rock-paper-scissors. Without saying a word, Nayeon is able to communicate to Momo and Sana that they should coordinate their hand gestures to ensure that Hyung-don can't win any round of the game outright. In "Twice: Lost Time", the group is given a mystery to solve in form of puzzles and tasks themed around classic fairy tales. In one late episode, Tzuyu is tasked to bounce a badminton shuttlecock off of a racquet thirty times without dropping it. After much pleading and batting of eyelids, Tzuyu convinces the referee to lower the number to twenty. But in her scored run, she drops the shuttlecock at the count of seventeen but lifts it right back up into the air. Dahyun and Chaeyoung are with her and cleverly continue counting anyway, and since Tzuyu's back is turned to the referee (who doesn't have an angle to see the failure state) they get away with it. Backstage at the Soribada Awards in 2019, Tzuyu is filmed having trouble with a crane skill tester. Without missing a beat, Jeongyeon opens the front panel of the cabinet, but doesn't simply remove any of the plush toys they want. She instead strategically positions them inside the machine upright and separated so that they're more easily grabbed by the claw mechanism. In general, this aspect is most on show in the "Time to Twice" series on Youtube. For the 2023 New Years mini-series, they are rewarded for winning challenges with credit (measured in Korean currency) that they're permitted to exchange for tasty food at the recurring Tdoong Snack Bar. In episode 3, after a few disappointing rounds Mina is inspired to create counterfeit credit vouchers, and ropes Tzuyu and Sana into testing the scheme. After they successfully scam the Tdoong Snack Bar out of multiple purchases with the fake credit slips, Jihyo does them one better by walking out of the place with an armful of food that she doesn't even bother paying for. During the Cooking Battle, nearly all of them tried their best to find and exploit loopholes for the ingredient choosing mini-games.

Related to the above, Jeongyeon also occasionally veers close to Safety Freak territory, though not unjustified. Jeongyeon took it upon herself to gather up all the gravel and stones she could find to level out the surface and prevent further accidents.

Singer Name Drop: "Like Ooh-Ahh" has the line "better think about it twice." "One More Time", "What Is Love?", "BDZ", "Likey", "Fancy", and "Kura Kura" had them yell out the group name. "ICON" starts its second verse with "Don’t gotta tell me twice". One of Sana's lines in "Moonlight Sunrise" is "ey, come with me, don't think twice." In "Heart Shaker" one of Tzuyu's lines is literally "My name is Tzuyu". Very cute and fitting the meaning of the song, as it's about trying to approach the person you like.

Fashionable Asymmetry: Chaeyoung and Mina both have beauty marks that fans consider critical components of their looks – Chae's is a large mole below the left side of her lip that she took care to add onto a cake with an icing caricature of herself. Mina has smaller marks on her nose, upper lip, and lower lip (the latter often unseen). During one video, Mina told Chaeyoung that after SIXTEEN, a trainer demanded she get her moles removed before Twice's debut. Mina agreed… but then never did it.

Beware the Quiet Ones: As noted elsewhere, despite being one of the quietest members on-screen, Tzuyu doesn't have the nickname 'Savage Maknae' without good reason. Mina also has her moments, even if it's typically more often played for laughs, having played the strict company director and gang boss in various Time to Twice content, while also not hesitating to take opportunities to display her competitive streak. Cool Car: The video for "Feel Special" features Sana hiding out behind a 1976 Jaguar XJ Series 2. A 1964 Lincoln Continental is the backdrop for the rap break in "Likey". In their music video commentary the group remarked on how the owner was nervous about all the dancing happening around his vehicle. Jeongyeon is your chauffeur in a 1966 Volvo 122 S in the video for "Yes or Yes". Chaeyoung waits out a storm safely inside a 1949 Mercury Eight in the video for "Kura Kura". Nayeon poses on top of a stretch-Hummer during "POP!". During the music video reaction, Jeongyeon and Chaeyoung asked Nayeon if she got to go inside the limo… She did not. "Moonlight Sunrise" features Mina and Jeongyeon splitting time behind the wheel of a 1986 BMW 7 Series. The Japanese version of "TT" features the group watching a drive-in movie in a pair of candy-colored Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Carbiolets with the tops down. Another Karmann Ghia (in sleek black) is Jihyo's getaway car in "Set Me Free", and after escaping the scene of the crime she swaps to a 7th generation Dodge Charger. The coastal road trip depicted in the video for Jihyo's solo song "Killin' Me Good" happens in a red 1980 Chevrolet Corvette.

Nayeon = 9*  (because her birthday is in September, and TWICE is 9) Jeongyeon = 0*  (she doesn't have a favourite number so she chose null) Momo = 64*  (her dad's jersey number from back when he played American Football) Sana = 12*  (her birthday is in December) Jihyo = 21*  (her birthday is February 1st) Mina = 37*  (a Japanese number-pun on her name) **  (37 can also be read as "Sana", and yes Sana originally wanted this number but Mina got to choose first) Dahyun = 7*  (she joined JYPE on a July 7th and also survived the final episode of SIXTEEN on July 7th) Chaeyoung = 29*  (nothing special here, just Twice is Nine) Tzuyu = 25*  (she thinks this number is cute, no more no less)

Nature Lover: Jeongyeon (and to a certain extent Chaeyoung and Sana) is probably the most nature-inclined of the group. One of her oldest and favorite hobbies is camping, and as noted in the Neat Freak entry below, she takes general cleanliness very seriously. And according to Sana in a Mono Tube video when she participated in the Re: Earth initiative by collecting trash in the area around the JYPE training facilities, Jeongyeon routinely encourages the others to sort their rubbish and recycling. And from the video, Sana cheerfully wandering around the city streets picking up trash, smiling broadly and chatting all the while, is also a sight to behold.

Brand X: Chaeyoung wears a Moschino-branded gold chain belt in outdoor scenes filmed on location for "Signal". The costumers seem to have had second thoughts about featuring the brand so prominently in close-ups, so later shots of the outfit show that the letters 'O', 'C', and 'I' have been removed from the dangling charms.

The Between 1&2 EP, for example, is one of their lightest latter-day releases, even revisiting bubblegum with "Talk That Talk" and "Basics", but it also contains one of their darkest songs, "Gone".

Cross-Cast Role: Some of the roles in the "What Is Love?" music video. In one scene, Chaeyoung is given a drawn-on mustache. (Behind the scenes, however, Dahyun got upset over being told that her character in one scene didn't really look like a man) For her brief cameo as Albert Einstein in "SCIENTIST", they didn't have a fake moustache for her, so she cut her wig and made one herself. Jeongyeon was the go-to for playing male characters (Leonardo Dicaprio's Pretty Boy Romeo; Pinocchio; etc.) before her self-imposed Girliness Upgrade. Inverted during the Ghost homage in "What is Love?" where Sana of all people spoofs Patrick Swayze and Jeongyeon is Demi Moore.

Production Foreshadowing: "The Best Thing I Ever Did" is an R&B ballad that hints at a shift to a more mature sound with their next Korean release, the Fancy You EP. The b-sides on the Yes or Yes EP hint at this as well, despite its title track, by being generally more reserved while still remaining close to their usual style at the time.

The Show Must Go On: The video for "Perfect World" shows Twice performing on a small stage in front of a sparse audience of men. As the group delivers their brush-off message, the set behind them falls down, the lighting rig collapses, the stage catches fire and a car crashes through the side of the theater. But nothing will stop them from finishing the performance and making their polite but firm point.

Homage: The Cheer Up MV revolves around this trope. To be more precise, Nayeon homages the movie Scream, Mina the Japanese movie Love Letter, Sana Sailor Moon, Tzuyu Breakfast at Tiffany's, Momo Resident Evil (2002), Jeongyeon the Hongkongese movie Chungking Express, Jihyo homages Bring It On, Chaeyoung can be homageing any Spaghetti Western, and Dahyun the Korean movie Hwang Jin Yi. The TT MV has the girls dressed in different costumes from popular franchises. Momo as Tinkerbell*  (but with red hair), Jihyo as The Snow Queen*  (but with dark hair), and Jeongyeon as Pinocchio have the most faithful costume reproductions. Sana dressed as a superhero (most likely a Batman Parody given that her line starts with na na na na na na), Mina as a pirate, Chaeyoung as a mermaid, Dahyun as the Easter Bunny, and Nayeon as the devil don't homage a particular franchise, but they are popular Halloween costumes. Tzuyu's costume has been subject to many different theories*  (ghost, witch, and Morticia Addams among others), but was confirmed in the "making of" video to be a vampire costume. The What Is Love? MV pays homage to more films. Nayeon becomes Mia Thermopolis, Jeongyeon and Sana homage the classic pottery scene from Ghost, Mina and Dahyun recreate the headphone scene from the French classic La Boum, Sana and Tzuyu participate in the Twist Contest, Jihyo pines over Jeongyeon in their version of Love Letter, Momo and Tzuyu recreate an iconic dance scene taken from La La Land, Tzuyu and Jeongyeon recreate the fateful meeting of Romeo and Juliet from across the fish tank, and Chaeyoung shows off Mathilda's various disguises for Dahyun's Leon in their homage of The Professional. Stray Kids in turn often do homage to them. Felix especially loves to dance to their songs.

Ms. Fanservice

Ms. Fanservice: These members stand out on stage and in some videos: Sana Minatozaki. She's often referred to as the "cute-sexy" member of the group, and it shows, given that she's the one most likely to attract new people in the fanbase, both male and female. Sometimes, her outfits (notably in "FANCY" and "Feel Special" stages) show off her figure in a very flattering light. Her touchy nature with her fellow members certainly adds to this. Momo. Like Sana, some of her outfits are noticeably less modest compared to the other girls, to show off her more muscular (and curvier) body. Her more fanservice-y outfits increased as the group matured from their cutie concept, starting in "FANCY" era, and have peaked with their Ready To Be tour featuring her in more shorts, more revealing outfits, and more midriff-bearing tops that show off her chiseled abs than ever before, along with a pole dancing performance to go with it. Needless to say, the grown-up era of Twice has done her especially well. Nayeon has more fanservice than usual in the "Pop!" video, in which she sports an Unlimited Wardrobe of revealing outfits. Jihyo also got this treatment after getting a glow-up in later years, her outfits especially tending to accent her strong body. Her solo debut makes this even more obvious, and her outfits were often very sexy. Mina has become this in more recent years, particularly since their Ready To Be tour. She's always had shades of it over the years to a small degree, but it's really come to the forefront with the most notorious examples being her casually sexy dance moves, her skimpier outfits and her performing a seductive cover of Ariana Grande's 7 Rings on-stage that's complete with booty shorts, ass shaking, and twerking.

Modesty Shorts: Many of the group's performance outfits feature skorts rather than actual skirts, but even under short trousers and formalwear nearly every costume includes black shorts that serve to obscure and negate any impropriety. If you're not a dirty pervert and haven't been carefully scrutinizing every frame of every music video, modesty shorts are most evident near the end of "What is Love?" on Nayeon's costume, and also in "Wake Me Up" preserving the whole group's dignity under the athletic uniforms.

It's All About Me: Nayeon lightheartedly exhibits this attitude. When Mina talked about "Shot Thru The Heart", a song she co-wrote about a guy not requiting her feelings, Nayeon asked if he didn't like Mina because he liked Nayeon. In a Private Life episode as well, the producers brought in a pair to show "daring" PDA when each girl entered the elevator. Even "clueless" Sana was flustered by the PDA, but Nayeon didn't notice a thing.

Dahyun insists she is 160cm tall though the other members have expressed doubt about this, and as long as it's clear everyone is aware she is taller than Chaeyoung (as played for laughs in their Switch to Me teaser as well as an Idol Human Theatre episode), she's fine.

Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: They have a lot of comeback with these hair colors, however these examples play it straight: For "Like Ooh-Ahh", Momo was blonde; Jihyo, Mina, and Jeongyeon had red hair (pink in Jeongyeon's case); and everyone else had brunette hair. For "CHEER UP", Sana's blonde; Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, and Jihyo are brunettes (black in Nayeon's case); and Chaeyoung had reddish-brown hair while Mina is a ginger. For the 2 examples above, Dahyun is a more complicated case, as her hair in the above comebacks were multicolored. Her hair was brown in both eras but she had orange and magenta streaks in "Like Ooh-Ahh" and blonde and blue tips in "Cheer Up". In "MORE & MORE", Momo, Mina and Jeongyeon are blonde (then Jeongyeon's hair became silver in the music show performances), Nayeon had brown hair, Dahyun and Chaeyoung also count as brunettes even though the former's hair is indigo and the latter's black hair had bluish-green streaks, Tzuyu's hair is wine red and Jihyo and Sana are technically also redheads as their hair colors were pink and orange respectively. During their first online concert and Eyes Wide Open and Better eras in late 2020, Chaeyoung joins Mina and Jeongyeon as one of the blondes, and Nayeon, Sana and Dahyun's hair was different shades of brown, Momo complicates it a bit with dark blue hair in the concert, "Eyes Wide Open" photoshoot, then she and Dahyun went back to their natural black hair in the "I Can't Stop Me" MV while Nayeon complicates the trope again when she gained blonde streaks in the "Better" MV, Jihyo had red hair again, and Tzuyu's hair was a unique copper (brownish-orange) shade. In the Formula of Love: O+T=<3 photoshoot, Chaeyoung and Jeongyeon were blonde, everyone else had black/brown hair (save for Tzuyu who had deep purple hair), Sana had strawberry blonde hair and the Explosion concept where Nayeon and Momo joined the redhead with pink streaks. In the "SCIENTIST" MV, Sana changed her hair to silver and Momo had red streaks in her hair.

Dancing Is Serious Business: Momo is considered one of the best dancers in the industry, having won a "Queen Of Dance" award in 2021 and has earned the praise for her skills from many, even choreographer Lia Kim, which is considered a really big deal in Korea. All the girls in general, befitting a group from JYP, which is well-known for all their groups having hard choreographies. Even their "easiest dance" is a bit complicated, while the group agrees one of the most difficult pieces of choreography was for ''More & More'', and it's easy to see why.

Lighter and Softer: Most of their 2021-22 singles, save for a couple of Japanese ones, show the group lightening up again after their darker 2020 releases without going back to their old sound. This extends to some of the b-sides, though they're generally still on the more mature side.

Genre Throwback: "Fancy" echoes 1990s to early 2000s pop in terms of sound and aesthetic, particularly the hyper-kitschy green screen sets. Unlike 1990s-2000s music videos, of course, this one is available in crisp 4K footage. "I Can't Stop Me" had a lot of influence from 80s synthwave pop. "Talk That Talk" is intended to be an homage to "Y2K" songs and styles.

The Unpronounceable
 TWICE (Music) / int_d5656fbe
comment
The Unpronounceable: Tzuyu's name pronunciation has been a topic of debate. Korean doesn't have the same phonemic inventory as Mandarin and it lacks tonality (for the record, neither English nor Japanese are tonal either) so they try to approximate åç‘œ*  (Standard Chinese IPA [dÍ¡z̥ɨy], approximately bands + roses + French u/German ü or for those confused, just input the Chinese characters into google translate and click the speaker button) as much as possible with 쯔위 "jjeu-wi" which is very different from the pronunciation in Mandarin. Her name is transliterated in Hanyu Pinyin (not universal in Taiwan, especially in the south where she's from) as ZÇyú, just to add to fan frustrations on what pronunciation to use. Tzuyu herself embraces "Jjeu-wi" when she speaks Korean, however she uses the original pronunciation when she speaks Mandarin. To settle the differences, fans have given Tzuyu the affectionate nickname "Chewy" based on her Korean pronunciation.

Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Tzuyu has a reputation for being one. She's drop-dead gorgeous (although the darkest-skinned member of TWICE, not the standard Raven Hair, Ivory Skin example of this trope), and she's nicknamed the "evil maknae" due to how blunt and detached she can seem. Mina also counts. Like Tzuyu, it's because she is very shy, mostly keeping to herself and not joining in the others' antics. Unlike Tzuyu, Mina is rarely blunt. During her pre-debut days, Dahyun played a role of this in a role as JB's Love Interest in GOT7's "Stop Stop It" music video.

Product Placement: The bridge of the "What Is Love?" music video has an advertisement for Acuvue contact lenses when Dahyun, known for her bad eyesight, holds a box as its logo appears onscreen. This is nowhere near as blatant in the Japanese version of the MV (which lacked sponsorship). Other product placement has been more subtle. In a case of visible fashion logos, Nike athleisure tops and trousers are featured prominently in the music video for 'Better' and Sana sports an activewear dress from the Adidas x Gucci line in 'Hare Hare'. The dance practice video for 'Scientist' features Jeongyeon in a pink New York Yankees wool cap, a function of the group's Major League Baseball promotional relationship. Then there's the super-expensive Marchesa Notte eveningwear gowns that show up on Mina, Sana, Momo, Dahyun, Jihyo and Jeongyeon in 'I Can't Stop Me', each of which cost something like $3,000 at the time that they filmed the video. No logos or visible branding though, because when you're Up Marketing then the people of discernment already know what it is you're selling to them and everybody else can just remain clueless.

Team Mom: Nayeon occasionally becomes this to the other members, to the point of being considered the unofficial second leader. For instance, during a rehearsal for "TT", she saves Momo from falling off the stage; and during the actual performance, she pulls Momo back from the edge. Jeongyeon also counts, according to the other members (and demonstrated during the Sieze the Light web documentary when she took the lead in making sure Dahyun was OK when she felt ill prior to a concert). In fact, the girls say Jeongyeon is like this to everyone except Nayeon and Jihyo – the former is older and the latter has more performing experience – who she prefers to alternate between good-natured sisterly bickering and teasing mercilessly.

Team Pet: Boo, Momo's adorable little dog that frequently appears in TWICE's Instagram posts and behind the scenes videos. Boo even made a cameo in the "SCIENTIST" music video, playing with Momo. Note that several other members of Twice have dogs, and Momo herself got a second dog in early 2021 (Dobby) to be Boo's companion, but only Boo has become so thoroughly associated with Twice.

Theme Naming: Most artists from JYP Entertainment have a number-related name: 2AM, 2PM, 15&, Baek Ayeon (baek = 100 in Korean), GOT7, TWICE, and DAY6. Wonder Girls, miss A, NMIXX, and TWICE have the same "s" sound, and all but miss A incorporate the syllable "스" (miss A's is written as 미쓰 in Korean).
