The Slim Shady LP is the second studio album by Eminem, released on February 26, 1999.The album served as Eminem's major-label debut, and became his first work to receive significant public recognition, but is not actually his first-ever release. That title goes to his debut album Infinite (1996), which was a critical and commercial flop upon release, only selling around 1,000 copies and evoking many a complaint of Em's rapping style on the album being overly similar to rappers like Nas and Jay-Z.Following a suicide attempt and the invention of an angry and violent (yet darkly humorous) alter ego, Em released The Slim Shady EP a year later, and things started turning around. Most notably, the EP gained the attention of Dr. Dre, who quickly got in contact with Em, signed him to his label Aftermath Entertainment, and began work on an album with him, the end result being this. The album takes a look into Em's psyche both through the cartoonish obscenity of his alter ego Slim Shady (introduced in the namesake EP) and his real-life struggles with poverty and bullying among other subjects. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, won two Grammy Awards (Best Rap Album and Best Rap Solo Performance for "My Name Is") and would go on to be certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA in 2000, elevating Em from underground buzz to mainstream celebrity.

Hypocrite Has a Point | |
The Slim Shady LP (Music) / int_19da80d3 | comment |
Hypocrite Has a Point: "Guilty Conscience" revolves around Dr. Dre and Eminem being the respective angel and devil of several men's consciences. Dre spends the song trying to talk the men out of committing crimes, but in the song's final verse, Em calls out Dre for doing so while having a criminal history of his own, bringing up his 1991 assault of TV host Dee Barnes and the violent gangster persona he had when he was in N.W.A. He asks Dre how he can tell others not to be violent, and Dre replies that it's because they "don't need to go the same route that I went". He's on the right side of every argument he gets into in the song (trying to prevent a store robbery, the rape of a minor, and the murder of a woman and the man she cheated on her husband with), but Em pointing this out (and taunting him for it) ultimately makes him give up the struggle and turn to the dark side.

Immediate Self-Contradiction / I Resemble That Remark!: In the last verse of "Guilty Conscience", Dre tries to convince a man not to kill his wife and the man he caught her in bed with. Em then rebuts by pointing out that Dre has his own history of violence, having assaulted TV presenter Dee Barnes in 1991 and presented a gangster image as part of N.W.A. Dre reacts indignantly to this characterization of him...by threatening to kill Em.

"Bad Meets Evil" features Royce da 5'9", who closes the song by saying: "See you in hell for the sequel", which would become the name of his own debut EP: "Hell, the Sequel". Downer Ending: "My Fault" ends with a girl named Susan overdosing on a bag of mushrooms Em gives her. The song closes on Em bawling and trying to get Susan to wake up. "Guilty Conscience" has a Good Angel, Bad Angel premise, with Em as the bad angel and Dr. Dre as the good angel fighting over control of several people's conscience. The song ends with Em getting Dre to turn to the dark side and tell a man to shoot his wife and the man she was cheating on him with, not to mention that the previous verse ended with Em successfully convincing another man to commit statutory date rape.

Sampling: "My Name Is..." contains a sample from Labi Siffre's "I Got The..." The openly gay singer only allowed use of his song if the misogynistic and homophobic references were removed from the song. "Guilty Conscience" features a sample of "Pigs Go Home", composed by Ronald Stein for the film "Getting Straight". While the album notes mentioned that the song is an "interpolation" of "Pigs Go Home" Stein's widow filed a lawsuit for not being paid royalties. She won her case. "If I Had" has a sample of "Impeach the President " by The Honey Drippers. "Cum On Everybody" relies on a sample of "Gimme What You Got" by Le Pamplemouse. "Bad Meets Evil" has a sample from "Me & My Girlfriend" by Tupac Shakur and "Modaji" by Dave Grusin. "Rock Bottom" samples "Summertime" from Janis Joplin's Cheap Thrills. "I'm Shady" is based on "Pusherman" by Curtis Mayfield and "I'm Your Pusher" by Ice-T. "Just Don't Give A Fuck" samples "Catch The Beat" by T-Sky Valley. In the EP version, it also sampled "Gavotte and 6 Doubles" by Bob James.

Real Life Writes the Plot
The Slim Shady LP (Music) / int_786bf97f | comment |
Real Life Writes the Plot: A lot of songs have autobiographical elements, though Eminem often dramatizes things a bit for effect. The line about the Spice Girls in "My Name Is" was inspired by the fact that many radio DJs had asked him which Spice Girl he would date if he had the choice. "Brain Damage" addresses Eminem's childhood experiences with being bullied at school and going into a coma as a result. DeAngelo Bailey, one of the people accused of being a bully in the song, filed a lawsuit, but the judge later dismissed the case. Eminem also blames his teachers and his mother for not helping him. In reality, his mom sued the school for not protecting her child better. The line where the principal joins in beating up Eminem is also fantasy. Eminem wrote "Rock Bottom" after being fired from his cooking job at a restaurant. Eminem attacks his own mother in "My Name Is", rapping that she does more dope than he does and that she couldn't breastfeed him as a child since she had "no tits". His mother directly responded to the latter line in her 2008 autobiography, writing, "This line was horrible and upsetting, because I'd contracted toxemia-blood poisoning when I gave birth to him and hadn't been able to breast-feed." Eminem also attacks his own wife Kim in "'97 Bonnie & Clyde", and even felt the need of letting his then-infant daughter go to the recording studio and make a vocal contribution to the latter song. "Guilty Conscience" has Dr. Dre play the good angel to Slim Shady's bad angel in several men's consciences, but Shady tries to convince one man to listen to him with the line "You gonna take advice from somebody who slapped Dee Barnes?", in reference to a real-life incident in 1991 where Dre allegedly either beat up or just pushed TV presenter Dee Barnes at a party; he was fined, put on 2 years' probation, given 240 hours of community service, and made to appear in an anti-violence PSA. Eminem was nervous what Dre would think of this line since he had only known him for a few days, but to his delight, Dre "fell out of his chair laughing."

Establishing Character Moment: The image quote at the top, which is the opening line of the album's first verse (in "My Name Is"), sets the tone for Em's persona pretty well. It has further been interpreted as having been specially made to not only rope in the young audiences that would become big fans of him, but also to make a satirical point about how parents get worked up about him yet let their kids watch desensitized violence in the form of cartoons like Tom and Jerry.

Good Angel, Bad Angel: The basis of "Guilty Conscience", with Dr. Dre playing the good angel and Eminem playing the bad angel (reasonably) and quarreling over their attempts to respectively talk people out of and into committing illicit acts. And no, he isn't related to Stanley Mitchell, the character from "Stan" on The Marshall Mathers LP. In "Brain Damage", Em mentions his palms being sweaty, a line which was slightly tinkered and reused in "Lose Yourself", released three years later.

The end of the song's chorus goes, "See you in Hell for the sequel." Afterwards, the two had a lengthy falling out, but once their mutual friend Proof died, they patched up their issues and released a joint album called Hell: The Sequel in 2011. Besides its name, given how long it took Em and Royce to get around to making it, one can say we saw the sequel in Development Hell.

The Slim Shady LP (Music) / int_c75df49a | comment |
Shout-Out: All over the place. "My Name Is" namedrops Nine Inch Nails, The Spice Girls, The Incredible Hulk, Pamela Anderson and Kris Kross. The music video also makes reference to Johnny Carson, The Brady Bunch, Marilyn Manson, Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. The line preceding the Nine Inch Nails reference ("Hi, kids, do you like violence?") is censored in the clean version to replace "violence" with "Primus" (another rock band), effectively killing two birds with one stone. "Guilty Conscience" has several references. Dr. Dre refers to a store clerk as "older than George Burns". In the second verse of the song, where Dre and Shady are debating over the conscience of a 21-year-old man about to take advantage of a 15-year-old girl, Dre tries dissuading him by bringing up the film Kids, which contains a scene where an unconscious girl is raped, resulting in the rapist contracting AIDS, while Shady brings up the rapper Sun Doobiest, who later made a porn movie. Near the end of the song, Shady references Dr. Dre's earlier album Straight Outta Compton with N.W.A, rapping, "Mr. Dre, Mr. N.W.A, Mr. AK / coming straight outta Compton, y'all better make way". "Role Model" "Just Don't Give A Fuck" references Jim Brady, assistant to Ronald Reagan who got paralyzed after being shot during the 1981 assault on his life. He also namedrops American football coach Marty Schottenheimer, boxer Mike Tyson, rapper DeShaun Holton, O. J. Simpson murder victim Ron Goldman, "Fuck the World" by Tupac Shakur, Voltron and Rage Against the Machine. "As The World Turns" references the character Les Nessman from WKRP in Cincinnati, loss-of-weight book author Jenny Craig and Inspector Gadget. "Cum On Everybody" references Kurt Cobain, Lauryn Hill, Beastie Boys, Kid Rock and the Loch Ness Monster. "Bad Meets Evil": "Still Don't Give A Fuck"

The Dog Bites Back: "Brain Damage" contains many fantasized scenarios of Em getting back at bullies that have tormented him. For example, after he gets brutally assaulted by a bully near the end of the song (the school principal even comes in only to assist the bully in beating him), Em plays dead to get his assailants to leave. Once they do, he turns the tables by defeating the bully with appliances from the janitor's closet.

Brick Joke: In the case of "Bad Meets Evil", Em's song with then-friend Royce da 5'9. This joke got even more elaborate in the wake of "Cold Wind Blows" (from Recovery), which was released just a year before H:TS, wherein God tells Slim Shady that He will send him to Hell if he does not change his ways. Apparently, he didn't.
