Weezer (retrospectively known as The Green Album to separate it from the band's other self-titled releases) is the third studio album by Weezer, released in 2001.After the critical and commercial failure of their Darker and Edgier sophomore album Pinkerton (1996), Weezer went into hiatus while bassist Matt Sharp left the band in 1998 to focus full-time on his own band, The Rentals. After they officially returned to performing in 2000, lead guitarist and frontman Rivers Cuomo wanted to take the band in a simpler, lighter direction to avoid a repeat of Pinkerton's backlash and to reclaim their former commercial success. The result was a short, poppy, feel-good rock album with simpler lyrical themes, completely unlike its complex and ambitious predecessor.Weezer even went as far as re-hiring Ric Ocasek (who previously produced The Blue Album) to produce this album as well. To replace Matt Sharp, Rivers hired bass player Mikey Welsh (pictured far-left on the album cover), who played in a variety of bands such as Left Nut, Heretix, and Jocobono. This would be the only Weezer album that Welsh would be featured on.The album spawned three singles: "Hash Pipe", "Island in the Sun", and "Photograph", all well-received by critics. Director Marcos Siega would direct videos for the former two, while Spike Jonze (who directed the music videos for "Buddy Holly" and "Undone – The Sweater Song") would direct an alternative video for "Island in the Sun", which received much more airplay on MTV and became the better-known version. Friend of the band and webmaster Karl Koch would also direct a music video for "Photograph".While The Green Album was a critical and commercial success, charting at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and going Platinum a few months later, the intended plan for the album's success to overwrite Pinkerton in the public consciousness did not go as anticipated.Unbeknownst to the band, during the transient period of them returning to live shows, their fanbase was connecting and growing through the Internet, and Pinkerton's critical and commercial standing was seeing significant positive change. By the time The Green Album was released, reevaluation had lifted the consensus on Pinkerton from "a juvenile, sloppy mess" to "the band's undisputed masterpiece". As a result, many people saw this album as a betrayal to the direction they'd established on Pinkerton, and would use this as grounds to declare that they had "sold out".This greatly frustrated Cuomo, as he specifically designed this album to be as far-distinguished from its predecessor as possible due to its poor reception. It didn't help that Cuomo became disillusioned with Pinkerton due to the public's negative reaction to it, and wanted nothing to do with it for the longest time, only playing one or two songs from the album during live shows only to satisfy the album's fans in their crowd. On a more tragic note, the album was dedicated to Weezer Fan Club founders Mykel and Carli, who died in a car accident during the last stretch of the Pinkerton tour. The album also marked the only appearance of bassist Mikey Welsh on a main Weezer releasenote He had also contributed bass and backing vocals on the band's 2001 Christmas CD EP before he left the band following a suicide attempt from a breakdown onset by mental illness, drug abuse, and strain from touring.

Product Displacement: The cover of the "Hash Pipe" single features Pat Wilson holding a carton of Natural American Spirit cigarettes. In some editions, the logo is blurred out, while others feature the flying W logo edited on top of the carton.

Easter Egg: The album shipped in a clear jewel case, except the photo behind the CD is mostly blank save for one section in the back of the front spine simply saying "No". There was speculation over what this could've meant, with the most common theory being that it's a light jab at Radiohead's OK Computer (which features a lengthy mock-advertisement blurb in the same spot on its own CD packaging, ending with a request for the reader to accompany the blurb's narrator), though Karl Koch simply said "No means no." The CD booklet folds out into a poster of the band onstage as shot from the audience - digitally blended in with the shadows of the crowd are the silhouettes of Mike Nelson, Tom Servo and Crow. A slight hint is that the liner notes include a copyright acknowledgment to Best Brains, which was the production company behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 at the time.

Record Producer: Like The Blue Album, the band considered self-producing, though due to the initially disastrous sales of Pinkerton, which actually was self-produced, DGC forced Weezer to bring in an outside producer, so they decided to bring in Ric Ocasek again. This was the second of three Weezer albums that he would produce.

Soft Reboot: Due to the backlash over Pinkerton, The Green Album was supposed to be a deliberate example of this, meaning to take the band back to the simpler sound (perhaps even moreso) of The Blue Album. The cover even resembles the cover of The Blue Album to invoke this.

Lighter and Softer: Big-time compared to Pinkerton, but it's this trope even to The Blue Album. The Green Album contains none of the heavy themes of either (alcoholism, crippling loneliness, etc.), while aiming to be much more commercial than the former. Even the complexity of the music was severely downplayed, with the guitar solos being an exact same melody as the vocal. This was done as a response to the critics of Pinkerton, who complained that the guitar solos were "too complex".

Alternate Music Video: The original music video for "Island in the Sun", directed by Marcos Siega, features the band performing at a Mexican couple's wedding. The executives at MTV disliked the video, so the band commissioned director Spike Jonze (who had directed the "Buddy Holly" and "Undone" videos) to film another video, this time featuring the band playing with wild animals on a hillside (notably, this is the video where Mikey Welsh is nowhere to be seen). The Jonze version was accepted by MTV and became the more popular version of the video. The Siega video was later released on Weezer's Video Capture Device DVD.
