The Ancient Ones is a play by post roleplay series on the Portal To The Multiverse forums of NationStates. The first thread ran for seven months and was completed in 2016. The sequel, Age of Nothingness, started soon after and was abandoned in 2018.It was created by the Dark Brotherhood of Deros, and is co-led by Naval Monte, Mundeo, and Petrokovia. It has its own wikia, with several entries maintained by the various Roleplayers taking part.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })The Ancient Ones takes place in the multiverse, where four original races once resided. The main group, the Ancient Ones, has built walls to separate the infinite universes from each other, in order to keep stability. The premise, which is that the walls had fallen (leading to various established and original characters to interact with each other), was a part of an earlier RP created by Deros called The Walls Have Fallen. The A-Plot of the first RP involves the heroes battling against a crazed Ancient One named Infinity, and the A-Plot of the second RP involves a large-scale war against the Borg (related to a strange, secretive, antagonistic association), but there are many sub-arcs that tie into the main plot.Franchises prominently featured in the Ancient Ones include Undertale, Pokémon, Sailor Moon, Doctor Who, and many, many others, including several original Verses.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })

Heroic BSoD: Frequently occurs. Considering the implications of crossing many different universes and having villains with limitless power, this is understandable. A few notable examples: Asriel suffers from BSOD after his family is killed by Chara. Chara suffers from this after killing their entire family, and also earlier when they realize what their genocide self did. Sans suffers from this in the first RP after Chara attempts to kill Papyrus, and nearly succeeds. Frisk suffers from this after realizing what Chara has become; being half Daeva following their little tenure down in The Warrens; experimented on and constantly extracted and bled for DETERMINATION. Yotsuha Ikegami, after being violated by Gurjheim the Twitcher for seven hours straight.

Breaking the Fourth Wall: The fourth wall gets relentlessly slaughtered in the first Ancient Ones, especially at the end. This carries over into the second RP, where several characters remember about the fourth wall, and several new characters are able to break it from the beginning. There is literally a guide made by one of the roleplayers on which layers of the fourth wall are which.

Deal with the Devil: The Daevas try to do this with many of the characters in the RP, currently Asgore has accepted their deal by the end of the first RP. Elizabeth also accepted a deal from them after her half sister was murdered before her eyes. Junichirō Koizumi struck a deal with the dark spirit of Hideki Tōjō in the Hotel; in exchange for safe passage through its halls, Koizumi must eventually give eight souls to Tōjō.

Glowing Eyes
 Ancient Ones (Roleplay) / int_230c2632
comment
Glowing Eyes: Common trope. Ty and Gold's other Pokémon frequent this trope, as their eyes glow blue or white when they use Detect (some other moves also have their eyes glow in response, such as Psychic). Amplificatae (such as Agent A or Tadayoshi) have bioluminescent cells in their irises, giving them the ability to make their eyes glow (specifically, just their irises, which may be more intimidating than the entire eyeball glowing). The purpose behind this is for it to be used as an intimidation technique to aid in fighting (if your opponent is too scared, you'll have the upper hand). The light doesn't interfere with the rods or cones in their eyes, and thus does not effect their vision in any way. Apparently, the bioluminescent cells can be activated by intense focus, without the amplificata actually wanting it to happen- this can sometimes be used as a tell in combat, or to give them away in low-light conditions (along with their automatic tapetum lucidum). On a related note, amplificatae do have night vision, created by a type of "retractable" tapetum lucidum (reflective coating on the inside of the eye; in daylight, it tends to make images less focused, hence why it isn't a permanent part in an amplificata's eye). It's created by the body when it senses low-light levels, by using special proteins to make a chemical film that coats the inside of the eye (it takes about 30 seconds to fully coat, and about 20 seconds for it to wear away when not needed). The tapetum lucidum in animals is responsible for the appearance of "glowing" eyes, when a very small portion of light hits it and is reflected back out of the pupil; the light reflected looks different in different animals, and in an amplificata, the reflected light is greenish-white. The HS versions of Eric, Ann, Alena, and Ivan have magical effects to their irises, which includes a very faint glow.

Hidden Depths: Elizabeth has many layers of emotional and psychological barriers that prevent people from knowing how she really feels. With team members that she feels that she can trust, and with little to no-one around to hear her, she's willing to peel back some of those layers to allow her true feelings to be known. Malkult once stated that the Gnosis verse has many hidden aspects to it that most characters are unaware of.

Older Than They Look: Muffet looks younger than she is, though part of it could be attributed to her fashion sense. Elizabeth is in her late thirties yet still looks to be in her twenties. Goku is 37 but has the appearance of being 33 because he died and was revived seven years later. During that time he didn't age, and before he participated in the DBZ Universe 6 & 7 tournament he trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for 3 days with Vegeta, the equivalent of 3 years in the time chamber. Vegeta is 44 but has the appearance of being 42 because of Hyperbolic Time Chamber training. Henry Saladass, who looks 50, is actually 69. Tadayoshi was promoted from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant immediately following basic training, at the age of 18. This is due to Project X's method of command; basic Amplificata Squad Leaders must be at least 1st Lieutenant (he was designated the leader of his squad due to his clever strategic thinking, still of some note among others in Project X). He was promoted to Captain only three months later after completing special operations training, which all amplificatae may take directly after basic training; special forces officers are at least Captain rank. Tadayoshi was promoted to Commander in Project X not even a month later, due to a major Noodle Incident involving Agent A; many in Project X say that he was promoted mostly by a mix of good and bad luck. The equivalent rank in the US Army would be Major, and the average age of a Major in the US military is 33. He has not been promoted since, despite more than six years since the beginning of the Ancient Ones, and his involvement in saving the multiverse. It was rumored that he would be promoted directly to Colonel, but Project X decided not to promote him due to the unusually young age he is for his current rank.

Our Angels Are Different: None of the angels that serve the Archons tend to be your typical angels, and those that bare a human shape often have enough physical mutations and deformities to not make them your typical blue-eyed, blond-haired, feathery angel type. Crazy-Prepared: Tadayoshi has a wide array of equipment, weighing about 90 pounds altogether. Amplified by the fact that he seems to never trade out equipment or leave anything behind; if he obtains a new item, he tends to keep it around just in case, sticking it somewhere in his trench coat. In addition to the items in his trench coat, standard police issue items (such as a baton, two-way radio, pepper spray, and handcuffs), and specialty items (including flight jets, two folding swords, grappling cables, and bombs), Tadayoshi has a multitool, a small tool kit, a telescoping magnet, a supercomputer that can backup his memories, retractable boot spikes, a portable gravity diffuser, a plasma/laser blaster (he still carries around his USP), a reflector, an indestructible sword, and various other small things. Most of this is equipment given to any Project X agent, but much of it is also stuff he obtained through his journeys. Tadayoshi's preparedness gives Batman a run for his money; too bad most of his equipment doesn't serve much combat purpose. Conundrum seems to also have whatever he needs at his disposal, though this can be attributed to him not needing much to get the job done. Ivan's coat is full of extra ammunition and medical supplies, just in case.

Chara is a DETERMINATION-fueled destroyer of worlds and a conceptual entity constant across all multiverses to an extent, while Frisk is in possession of a wand that allows them control over entire races of multiversal to hyperversal beings, and has an even greater DETERMINATION potential. Dark Is Not Evil: While a half-demon with an evil side, Marie is not an evil character. While she appeared cold and distant at first, that was due to her being alone for so long and keeping people away so they won't be harmed by her. When Marie warmed up to the group it was revealed that she was a loyal and kind woman who has a fondness for cute things. Elizabeth wears dark clothing, practices what can be best describes as dark magic, has a roguish personality and looks and has made deals with what can be best described as the offsprings of Satan and Cthulhu. But she is a anti-hero who secretly wants to do good in the world even though she will never say it openly.

Old Soldier: Simon Petrikov. He's in his 50's by the time of his involvement in the second Ancient Ones, but even without the magic provided from his crown, he can naturally lift large bookshelves and toss them (for a normal human in his 50's, this is quite impressive). When including his powers from the crown, he turns his badassery up to eleven. Though, as he is more of The Strategist, he tends to hang back instead of fight. AEGIS has plenty of old agents who don't let their age slow them down.

Author Avatar: Many of Kaidou's characters heavily reflect aspects of his own personality, physique, and temperament. Some more prominent examples include Lam Jan-ci, Ceiji, Yoichi Mineta, and Seishirō Akita. Tadayoshi and Gold are both this, by the same author. Oddly enough, while their tendencies are the same, Tadayoshi keeps a much cooler head.

She can also command them to dim the lights around her surroundings, distort sound to either make new noises or to cast silence, change the temperature in a room, alter a victim's emotions to produce feelings of fear, dread, anxiety, and panic, bend light to either cast illusions or invisibility, hide in the shadows, or even enter the Tenebraes realm of shadows. The tenebraes can even make the shadows themselves into three-dimensional, solid objects to interact with the world.

Bottomless Magazines: There has almost never been a situation where Ignis runs out of ammo, except in the battle against Hades and when her guns are broken by Rodin. Averted by Tadayoshi, in that he constantly keeps track of how many bullets are left in his gun, and switches out the magazine when it would be needed. This being said, he rarely ever shoots his gun enough to necessitate him switching out the magazine.

Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Elizabeth has insulted and flipped off many powerful beings that can easily destroy her from the gods and cosmic horrors from her world to Hades and even Infinity. Her greatest act of flipping off the higher powers is when she punched Hades right between the legs and face with an enchanted brass knuckle that can harm spectral beings (at the times Hades was using astral projection). When Clefairy flipped off Zalgo. When Ignis and Ty mocked Asriel's hyperdeath form. When Quetz called Hades a pedo.

Supernatural Sensitivity: Halfbloods and Ancient Ones have this for each other as well as hybrids. This includes natural halfbloods (such as Conundrum), Ancient One Hybrids (such as Kronus, the only known non-halfblood hybrid) and temporarily ascended Ancient Ones (such as Tadayoshi), though the sensitivity the latter feel is lessened. The reason behind this sensation is that beings with Ancient One blood flowing through their veins radiate an energy that can only be sensed by those of Ancient One lineage and those who have temporarily ascended into Ancient Ones. The higher the percentage of Ancient One DNA in your genes, the higher the intensity of the energy radiation (e.g if an ancient one was in a room with Conundrum, Infinity and Kronus. Infinity's energy would have the highest intensity while Kronus would have the lowest. Conundrum would be in the middle.) Elizabeth can sense when magic and other supernatural beings and forces are present in the area. Goku and Vegeta are capable of sensing Ki. Knuckles the Echidna and Shadow the Hedgehog can sense Chaos Energy.

The Dark Arts: The magic from Gnosis falls into this because of the sanity damaging effects and corruptible influences it does to the practitioners. More over magic in Gnosis has a price which can range from annoying inconvenience to ghasty and often invoke dangerous and reality shattering forces and entities that most be under the mage's control at all times less they wreak havoc upon the world, sometimes the beings and spells in question still cause havoc when everything is done correctly. However the applications isn't for destruction alone as the magic of Gnosis has great versatility on how it can be used and more often is used to gain insight to the secrets of the cosmos and to defend the practitioners from hostile supernatural beings and forces, it also has great utility use. Another reason for the negative connotation is due to the negative reputation magic has with certain groups and with the gods of that world that feel threaten with the idea of humans possessing such power to not only bend reality to their will but also try to change the status quo. It is generally regarded that magic itself is an amoral force and that the real darkness from it are the practitioners who either go mad or fall into their temptations and inner darkness.

Improbable Age

comment
Improbable Age: Tadayoshi was promoted from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant immediately following basic training, at the age of 18. Marguerite was promoted all the way to Sergeant Major in Project X by the time she was 19, and was soon promoted to Lieutenant. Her current rank (held since before the 1st Ancient Ones) is Captain, received when she was 22- the average age of a Captain in the US military is 27. She has not been promoted since, despite more than six years since the beginning of the Ancient Ones, and her involvement in saving the multiverse. She may have been up for a promotion, but the higher brass noticed that she works well with Tadayoshi, and prefer her to be in the same squad as him. Due to the rules on squad leadership in Project X, one of the two would have to be of a higher rank; the guy who can bench press your average four-door sedan will always win out against a normal human in this regard. In general, the officers in Project X are unusually young. This is due to the inability to find enough volunteers willing to join Project X- most would rather join their national military, where the chance of getting into a fight with a superhuman is, oddly enough, lower than it is in Project X- and the inability to use conscription (as an international police organization, it is barred from conscripting members). This is especially true for amplificatae, who start at 18 (normal for enlisted military), but are instantly given ranks as officers as compensation for the procedures, despite not even having a degree. This is partially made up for in a special technical academics course that's given during the basic military training, though this isn't useful outside of Project X, and doesn't count as a degree or even credits.

What the Hell, Hero?: Ty (Gold's Typhlosion) in the first RP. During a confrontation with Neyla, Ty drew a gun and attempted to shoot Neyla, but instead shot her daughter. During the interim period between the first and second installments, Gold and Ty attempted to work on their training as a way of making amends. Sonic the Hedgehog decapitated Chara with a spindash. It's all good though, because Chara got a 1-Up. Chara, on multiple occasions, has done some pretty weird and messed up stuff. For one, they killed their entire foster family and several of their friends out of hunger. They also nonchalantly murdered random civilians to prevent themselves from going out of control, too. Kayla, back when they were apparently "on the good side", still managed to have a very recent past of abducting Chara, torturing them and using them in various rituals, putting The Cynosure through utter agony, and raising entire armies of Gnosis Verse abominations that would just as soon kill every human in Britain as follow their orders. Elizabeth was in the receiving end of this when it was discovered that demons and other creatures can follow her since she was a magnet for them and she kept it a secret from the group. Goku almost annihilated Serena when he used a Kamehameha on Zalgo, not knowing that she was in the way. Serena's fine now.

Younger Than They Look: Due to the stresses of working in Project X, Tadayoshi and Marguerite both look a bit older than they are, by at least a few years. Before the events of the Ancient Ones, Tadayoshi and Marguerite were 20 and 23, respectively; however, people had mistaken Tadayoshi for a 25 year old, and Marguerite for a 31 year old at one point (one tends to gain years in appearance when in an active war zone). Simon Petrikov looks almost 80 by his facial hair and general appearance, but it's all just fatigue from the strain the crown has put on him. He's actually only 54 in the second Ancient Ones roleplay. Oddly enough, he's rather energetic, and has the gait of a 30 year old. Prince Ryūsuke Asano falls into a months-long depression, and during this period, because of his horrific eating habits, lack of sleep, and grossly excessive masturbation, looked far older than his 57 years.

Stock Foreign Name: Yamada Tadayoshi is the nickname given to an American Project X agent stationed in Japan by the locals. Both names are pretty stock, meaning that as a joke the citizens of Tokyo basically nicknamed him "Bob Smith." After Ceiji experiences difficulty in pronouncing her Cantonese name, Lam Jan-ci allows her to call her "Jenny". The nickname is later abandoned.

Well-Intentioned Extremist: Wilfre, who is attempting to separate his world from Mike's, in order to ensure the safety and stability of his world. Aegis is overzealous and reckless with their mission of protecting humanity, taking bold and quite often morally questionable steps to insure mankind's continual existence. Ji-Yeong. She grew up under the Kim regime, and after being convinced that all governments were like that she went on a crusade to 'liberate' the world by destroying all governments.

Dark and Troubled Past: Some of characters in the RP have terrible past experiences, with some being worse than others. Ceiji and her younger brother were psychologically abused by their father from a young age; this abuse drives her brother to commit suicide, and Ceiji herself to run away from home to join the military at age 17. Yotsuha Ikegami's parents separated when she was 6, and just shortly afterwards, her entire planet became the target of a holocaust perpetuated by Thero as Director of Intelligence of the Niril Republic. Yoichi Mineta was thrown out of his house at the age of 16 after his parents found out about his intimate correspondence with another boy, and would have starved to death had Itsuki Hitachi not taken him into his dojo. Anthony Haikarakainen was ordered to have been euthanised by his father, Harakiri Haikarakainen, and only survived thanks to Dr Lam Jih-yeung, who instead tried to ghoulify him, resulting in the then 15-year-old losing his left arm.
