Beverly Hills, 90210 was a Teen Drama that is credited with codifying the genre as we know it today and gained immense popularity during the early 1990s. It ran on Fox for ten years (from 1990 to 2000), and had all but changed its entire principal cast by the end of the show's run.The show focused primarily on the Walsh family, particularly fraternal twins Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty), who had just moved into Beverly Hills and were (at least initially) suffering a certain degree of culture shock. The action also included the twins' friends; the brooding bad boy Dylan McKay, the goofy 'big man on campus' Steve Sanders, the bookworm and school paper editor Andrea Zuckerman, the Alpha Bitch turned Lovable Alpha Bitch Kelly Taylor, the ditz Donna Martin, and the dorky freshman turned aspiring musician David Silver. The show began essentially as an American, more glamorized version of (the original eighties) Degrassi (of which it is rumored Aaron Spelling nearly adapted instead), adopting its format of tackling social issues an episode at a time during its first season (and to an extent the second season), but by Season 3 and especially after the cast graduated from high school, it became more of a Prime Time Soap. The show's casting includes some of the most dramatic examples of Dawson Casting in recent memory (and this show predates the trope namer), to the point where many sites often refer to the trope as "90210 Syndrome". Luke Perry was 24 when he began playing Dylan as a junior; even worse, Ian Ziering was 26 playing 16-year-old Steve Sanders and Gabrielle Carteris was 29 playing 16-year-old Andrea Zuckerman. Only Brian Austin Green (David), Douglas Emerson (Scott) and Tori Spelling (Donna) were real high school-aged teenagers playing their age.It is debated when the show declined in quality; most agree that it declined after season 3, which was when the cast graduated from high school, but some put the beginning the decline to the beginning of season 5, after Brenda left. Some even argue the show really hit its stride post-high school.Had a Spin-Off in Melrose Place (which itself had a less successful spin off in the short-lived Models Inc.) and Sequel Series simply titled 90210 which ran from 2008-2013 on The CW. The new series is mostly focused on a new cast of characters, though Donna and Brenda have made cameo appearances and Kelly is an important recurring character. One of the main characters of the reboot, Erin (Silver), appeared as a plot point in the original series as Kelly's baby half-sister. A second revival was announced in February 2019, that featured fictionalized versions of themselves trying to get a reboot of the series on the air. Sadly, Luke Perry —who was announced to be showing up in a limited role— suffered a massive stroke on the same day of the announcement, and ultimately died a week later. The remaining cast members continued the project in honor of him.

The Prom Plot

The Prom Plot: Both of their proms were pretty memorable: Their junior prom had Andrea worried about her "bland" dress, only for her own to be better than Brenda and Kelly, who are dressed the same and Donna is wearing an uncomfortable, overly fancy dress that she can't even sit in. Their senior prom is more infamous, as Brenda and Kelly are now fighting over Dylan and Donna gets drunk and ends up being barred from graduation.

Dylan later learns he has a younger half-brother Jack - who's a good two decades younger than him - through his father, whom he believed was killed years earlier but actually Faked The Dead, in the final season.

Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Jen seemed like a nice, caring older sister to Naomi in her first appearance. Right until we learn that she slept with Ethan while he and Naomi were together (she would later go on to sleep with Liam while he was dating Naomi and blame Annie for it). Annie and Dixon's cousin Emily seemed like a sweet, innocent girl who looked up to Annie at first. Then she turned all of Annie's friends against her, tried to steal Liam away from her, got Annie fired from her internship, and suspended from school... all while pulling the Wounded Gazelle Gambit.

Disappeared Dad: The show loves this trope- Ivy, Naomi (and thus also Jen), Liam, Adrianna, Silver, Sammy (Kelly's son) and most recently Navid, Annie and Dixon all have absent fathers. In fact none of the teenage cast have fathers much involved in their lives by late Season 3. In Season 4, Navid has a Missing Mom as well.

Parental Abandonment: Zig-zagged. Several of the main characters' parents are absent for long periods, or were hardly mentioned. Examples include Kelly's dad Bill Taylor (sure he was shown, only to disappear for years at a time), David's mom Sheila Silver (had mental issues, a nervous breakdown, became homeless, later recovered, only to disappear again), and Dylan's parents Jack and Iris McKay (at first; they recurred in several episodes in the first four seasons, though never lived with Dylan)

False Rape Accusation: Naomi falsely claimed that Mr. Cannon was sexually harassing her towards the end of season 2 (when in actuality, Cannon believed that Naomi was coming onto him when she said she "would do anything" to bump up a test grade). Eventually Naomi recanted her statements, but unfortunately this rape accusation became a real one.

Family Relationship Switcheroo: Gina was introduced in the show's ninth season as Donna's cousin, and caused much havoc within the group. In season 10, the audience discovered that Donna's father had an affair with Gina's mother in the 1970s, resulting in her birth, making Gina her half-sister. Downplayed example as Gina is still Donna's cousin. Donna's father, Dr. Martin, discovered this, and was quick to accept Gina as his daughter, though he later died soon after.

Advertised Extra: In the early episodes of Season 1, Donna was initially just a Satellite Character to Brenda and Kelly, with her characteristics being underdeveloped and different from the ones she was known for. By the end of the season, Donna's traits started to become clearer, and started branching out for her own storylines. In Season 1, David and Scott were nothing more than Plucky Comic Relief, and hardly interacted with the other, older teen characters. Eventually, by season 2, David formed into the group, while Scott was sidelined for most of the season until "The Next 50 Years," when he is killed off. Andrea's husband Jesse, and Brandon's boss Nat. Both were credited main characters, though they were usually used as means to serve the other, more prominent characters. Nevertheless, they did have some storylines, though were comparatively minor to the others. Even more surprising, considering that Jesse was the sole minority character in the main cast.

Taking the Heat: Austin took the blame for arson to protect Annie. Neither of them actually did it but the fire was started by Annie's friend Bree who was destroying evidence both she and Annie had been prostitutes; had Annie fingered Bree she would also have to reveal her own brush with prostitution and would have faced being kicked out of college at a minimum. Austin decided that Annie had more to live for so 'confessed' to get her off the hook.

comment
Early-Installment Weirdness: It started as an episodic high school drama mainly focusing on the Walsh twins. Each episode had its own story and aesop, and played out basically like a glitzier version of Degrassi High. From season two onwards, the plotlines started to arch over several episodes and the friends of the Walsh kids were given some limelight as well. Also, during the first season, the opening was very different. It was a series of scattered scenes with the main characters hanging out in Beverly Hills rather than the Opening Credits Cast Party used from season 2 onwards. The theme was also arranged in a typically-late-80s dance-pop style, unlike the harder-edged, guitar-driven rock theme that would come into use later. Dylan doesn't appear in the pilot, despite being the show's Breakout Character, and appeared in less episodes than the other main characters during the first season. Donna Martin was originally "Donna Morgan" and had a different personality altogether during season 1. Donna and Kelly's mothers in their first appearances are completely different from their later incarnations (not to mention played by different actresses than the regular ones); the more laid-back and fashionable Nancy Martin is a far-cry from the strict and conservative Felice Martin, for example.

The season four episode "The Time Has Come Today". Brenda finds a notebook in the floorboards of her bedroom, and discovers that it was written by a girl who lived in her home during the Vietnam War. By sheer coincidence, the girl had a twin brother and the same amount of friends as Brenda (sans Andrea), attended California University, and had a "Bad Boy" boyfriend that her father disapproved of, and all of her problems seem to mirror the problems Brenda is having with her friends at the time.

Artistic License – University Admissions: Steve gets into California University (which, in-universe, is the actual name), despite his terrible grades, his book dumb personality, and he seemed to have only one reference from his principal. Additionally, he broke into his school's computer system to change his grades (admittedly with the help of a Black and Nerdy freshman and was actually expelled from West Beverly High for the incident (albeit temporarily). And by the frequent remarks by other characters, it seems as if California University was a very hard school to get into. Ditto for non-studious students like Kelly and Donna. Consider the fact that they are wealthy (hence connections, including Steve's father being an alumni of California University), though in reality, it may take more than just connections to get into the school they want. Also, Brenda entered the same school after leaving the University of Minnesota earlier in Season 4. She may have been accepted to CU earlier, though since classes had started at that school, it doesn't really make sense since Brenda should've at least applied for late admission, though no such mechanics are ever mentioned.

'80s Hair: All of the characters in season one and two (albeit a bit more muted in season two) but it disappeared throughout season three. Ironically, the character of Kelly, most obsessed with superficial things, kept her Madonna-inspired 80s hair and makeup into season four, but finally ditched it by season 5 for a post-grunge inspired look.

comment
Time to Move: The first season finale of the original Beverly Hills, 90210 featured Jim Walsh getting a promotion back to Minnesota, and was met with resistance from Brenda, Brandon, and surprisingly, Cindy, all of whom grew accustomed to life in Beverly Hills. It went as far as a going-away party thrown by Brenda and Brandon's friends before Jim changed his mind, thus allowing the family to stay in Cali. Subverted in season 5, when Jim and Cindy Walsh did leave for Hong Kong, thus becoming The Moving Experience...on a different continent. They intended to sell the house, which led to their son Brandon (daughter Brenda having left for London a year earlier) deciding to have a destructive rave at the home, as the new potential owners were intending to destroy the house after the sale was made. However, the real estate agent came during the rave, and informed Brandon that the house fell out of escrow, thus the Walshes were still the owners of the house. This led to Brandon and his friends having to clean up the mess after the rave ended. Brandon and numerous of his friends (Steve, Valerie, David, etc.) lived in the house through the remainder of the show, even after Brandon himself left for Washington D.C. in early season 9, which meant that none of the owners or related family members lived in the house in the final two seasons.

In addition, she also got actually raped in a later season. My Beloved Smother: Donna's mother, Felice, was often shown to be extremely arrogant, elitist even, and often disapproved of her daughter's love interests, even setting her up with some who later turned out to be more than meets the eye. Dylan's mother, Iris, was a strange combination of this and Missing Mom. She had abandoned Dylan and was absent almost all of the time, but when she suddenly showed up at Dylan's (which she only did occasionally and for short bouts of time), she was dominant towards him and meddling in his life. Most notably, the time she showed up at his house unannounced just after he had broken up with Brenda and gotten in a relationship with Kelly - Iris tried to get him to break up with Kelly and get back with Brenda.

Demoted to Extra: Jim and Cindy Walsh's role on the show diminished as their children went off to college, and they were basically there to react to whatever they did. Eventually, both were Put on a Bus (or plane) to Hong Kong at the end of season 5. Scott Scanlon was prominent as David's best friend in season 1, though when David got involved with the group, he left him in the dust. In season 2, he only appears in four episodes before being killed off .

Since the very first episode shows Brenda entering a club using a fake ID and Kelly being barred despite also using one (seen here), a Shout-Out to a famous 1983 Brazilian song was made to reference the fact that all the protagonists are underage and thus legally unable to get into clubs.

Did They or Didn't They?: After botching her audition for the lead in the school play, Brenda shows up at the director's house in a sexy dress, insisting that she's perfect for the role. He says, "Okay, show me what you've got." as it fades to black. By the next episode, Brenda has the part. But when rumors spread that the director has a habit of seducing his students, it doesn't take long for people to assume that Brenda employed the Casting Couch to get the part. Brenda's defensive refusal to directly answer the question doesn't help her case either. It turns out that they didn't, she merely went to his house to re-audition and that the sexy dress was her costume.

Incest Subtext: According to IMDb: On the special, Beverly Hills, 90210: 10-Year High School Reunion (2003) Shannen Doherty revealed that the hardest thing about doing the show was pretending that Jason Priestley, whom she referred to as "being so hot", was her brother. She then revealed that, years later, people often approach her and ask her about the "weird incestuous vibe" between Brandon and Brenda, their characters. She said her response is always "Uh-huh, you better believe it!".

Slut-Shaming: All of the girls do this to each other at varying intervals: Brenda taunts Kelly about her previous reputation as the school bimbo after running into Kelly on a date with her ex-boyfriend Dylan. Throughout the series, it was well established that this was a sore point for Kelly. Brenda herself gets this when she's wrongly accused of using the Casting Couch to secure the lead in the school play. They, along with Andrea and Donna, apply this to newcomer Emily Valentine, upon noticing her flirting with all of the guys in the group. Especially bad as that's ALL she's doing—despite her unconventional looks and "Bad Girl" attitude, Emily is just as virginal as the latter two. Emily herself accuses Brandon of treating her like a tramp after he breaks up with her even though he's actually done nothing of the sort—although he's (rightfully) complained about her crazy behavior, he's said nothing to indicate that she's promiscuous. Valerie gets this after coming to town—from Kelly.

What the Hell, Hero?: Almost every major character has been at the receiving end of this. For example, the season 4 episode "Blind Spot", after he discovered that his fraternity's leader was gay and he accidentally outed him to the other fraternity members, has Steve being chewed out by the man for his homophobia and his decision to out him. Kelly and Dylan face this by Brenda when they reveal that they cheated with each other while Brenda was in Paris during the summer. Andrea calls David out for his apolitical stance when an accused anti-Semitic speaker is allowed to speak at the California University campus. This eventually leads to David coming to terms with his Jewish identity and going along with Andrea. Brandon is called out by Robinson Ashe III in a season 2 episode because the latter thinks that Brandon's only befriending him to get a story out of him (in the aftermath of his sister's boyfriend getting arrested for walking at night in Beverly Hills) and implicitly accused him of racism because of it. Brandon gets fed up with the accusation, leading to Brenda to tell her brother that he wouldn't be so upset if he felt that Robinson didn't have a point.

Estranged Soap Family: Big time, even excluding those relatives who departed on bad terms. Notable examples include Naomi's mother Tracy who has not appeared since 2009 despite her daughter being raped, scammed out of her money by a cult, expelled from high school and nearly getting married. Harry didn't show when Dixon almost died. And both parents were absent during his struggles with drugs.

Fake Guest Star: Kathleen Robertson (Clare) in season 5, plus Jason Wiles (Colin), Emma Caulfield (Susan), and Cameron Bancroft (Joe) in season 6. Most appear in over 25 episodes of their respective seasons, though still placed under "guest star" billing (though Kathleen Robertson was Promoted to Opening Titles come season 6). Especially egregious in the case of Wiles, who appears in every episode in season 6. Luke Perry is credited as "special guest star" for the final two seasons though is, for all intents and purposes, a main character. Joe E. Tata appears in a majority of the episodes of the first five seasons. He's Promoted to Opening Titles come season 6.

Contrived Coincidence: The season three episode "Midlife...Now What?" has several: When Brenda and Kelly are getting back massages at a spa, one of masseuses recounts a story of her two friends fighting over the same guy, which fractured their relationship. What...are...the...odds? In the same episode, Brenda learns that David's dad Mel Silver, then-married to Jackie Taylor, Kelly's mom, is having an affair when she overhears a conversation between two unrelated masseuses. Both Cindy and Jim, from friends and associates, gain the same book, the titular "Midlife...Now What?" which seems to be the go-to book on how to deal with a midlife crisis.

Expy: At least initially the Wilsons where clearly intended to invoke the Walshes from the original series (Annie especially was very obviously the new Brenda) though it's lessened with time. Dixon shares a few similarities with Clay Carlin from South of Nowhere. He may be an example of what Clay would be like if he hadn't met Sean. Campbell is pretty much Sebastian Smythe, except straight. They're even played by the same actor.

Second Year Protagonist: Most of the students spent two years in their junior year before moving onto senior year in the show's third season. This was done to sustain the show's longevity as the series became popular. However, the trope is averted with David Silver, who begins as a freshman, and unlike the rest of the gang, ages normally but graduates a year earlier than expected in season 3, with the Hand Wave being that he took more classes to catch up.

The Moving Experience

comment

Law of Inverse Fertility: Kelly gets unintentionally pregnant while in college, even though she uses birth control. This results in a miscarriage and she then finds out she has a medical condition called endometriosis, and is told by the doctor that that will make it very hard for her to ever get pregnant again, which she feels devastated about (although she hadn't planned getting pregnant while still in college, she apparently wanted to have children later in life). note — In the sequel/reboot series, she has a son, so apparently she did have a child at the end though — Brenda goes through a pregnancy scare after sleeping with Dylan for the first time, even though they too used birth control. Andrea unintentionally gets pregnant in college (and thus eventually has her daughter, Hannah, and marries Jesse). Then there's Kelly's mother Jackie, who was surprised when she learned that she was pregnant again while she was dating David's father (whom she married at the end of season 2).
