Created by Scott Fellows (Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, Johnny Test, Supernoobs), the show debuted on November 28, 2009 and ended on July 25, 2013.Kendall Knight, James Diamond, Carlos Garcia, and Logan Mitchell are four hockey players from small-town Minnesota. James dreams of becoming a pop star, so when Gustavo Rocque (Stephen Kramer Glickman), the ridiculously stuck-up producer for Rocque Records, comes to their town looking for talent, he gets all of his friends to audition with him. Unfortunately, Gustavo hates him but loves Kendall, who doesn't do the whole rich and famous act. In the end, he agrees to record some demos in Los Angeles as long as Rocque takes his friends, too, and makes them a singing group. They find out they only have three days to become a passable band, and Hilarity Ensues.The four eventually manage to succeed, and the series chronicles the group's rise to stardom as they move to Los Angeles (along with Kendall's mother and little sister) and do their best to keep the band and their new careers alive through the workings of a demanding (and, at times, controlling) industry while likewise getting into silly shenanigans. The show's sense of comedy is so over-the-top at times that it seems to resemble a real-life cartoon, down to using a slew of classic cartoon tropes.The series ran a respectable four seasons, additionally receiving a Made-for-TV Movie in between seasons 3 and 4 aptly titled Big Time Movie wherein the band tours England, foils a plot to Take Over the World, and sings a number of songs by The Beatles. The girls get off to a roaring start, eliminating the boys much faster than the boys can retaliate, but then Kendall pranks most of the remaining girls. In the end, Kendall and Katie, the only two left, are facing off when Bitters attempts to shut down the contest and proclaim that he wins and they all lose. Kendall and Katie choose to team up against Bitters, and share the prank champion crown. From then on, anyone is allowed to take part in the Day of Pranks. In fact, in "Big Time Pranks II," it is actually Katie who declares that the last person standing in the new prank war would be crowned its King, and Kendall who adds, "or the Queen." In "Big Time Girl Group," the boys become jealous of Kat's Crew, a new girl group Gustavo intends to produce, because the girls are given a poster (which the boys don't have) and get to sing the boys' new song. The boys try to make the girls look bad, which leads to Gustavo deciding not to produce Kat's Crew because he doesn't want to deal with another rivalry between bands. Realizing they were wrong, Big Time Rush urges Gustavo to keep Kat's Crew on, and the two groups create a music video together. In "Big Time Camping," Gustavo refuses to let the boys camp in the wilderness, fearing they will get hurt. The girls convince the boys to join them in sneaking onto a Hollywood sound stage set up to look like a forest, despite the boys not wanting girls on their camping trip. In the ensuing "best camper" competition, the girls thrive while the boys are freezing, starving, and miserable, mainly because the boys keep trying ideas that would only work if they were really in the wilderness, e.g. lighting a campfire, only to be drenched by the overhead sprinklers. The girls invite the boys to join their campsite, but the boys refuse to give in and instead search the studio lot for food and warm clothing. Eventually, the two groups set aside their differences and team up, when the blond Jennifer is caught by a security guard and Carlos and James must rescue her, and Logan, in a bear suit, is mistaken for a stuntman and attacked by ninjas, and everybody fights the ninjas to save him. The episode ends with the boys and girls all waking up at the end of their camping trip together.

This leads Gustavo to go crazy and owe over $14,000. At the very end of "Big Time Girlfriends", after Sasha wants to try things with Carlos for real and was making up her insane behavior the whole time...she says that she hates corn dogs, so he dumps her. Throughout "Big Time Move", Kendall is desperate to convince the boys to stop fighting and move back in together. After five minutes at the table together without any fighting, when the violent video game they're playing is brought up, they're right back to being savage. They find out at the end that the game was the cause of their fighting from the beginning.
