Became Their Own Antithesis: Yuri's whole arc is this. It shows how she ended up becoming as evil, tyrannical and vile as the people Nanno takes down throughout the series, even more worse than the Mean Girls who abused her from her Start of Darkness episode, Kaye from "SOTUS" and Teacher A from "Liberation".

Rape as Drama: One of the boys in "Apologies" attempts to rape Nanno in her sleep after two girls drug her with sleeping pills. In “Yuri, it is discovered that Nana and Tuptim have a habit of setting their enemies up for this and in the end, Yuri sets it up for Nana and Tuptim and it serves as their cause of death.

Does This Remind You of Anything?
 Girl from Nowhere / int_14ed6ab7
comment
Does This Remind You of Anything?: Nanno and Yuri's dynamic could be that of Domestic Abuse. Just put the supernatural and karma elements aside and it's more like Nanno trying to escape from the clutches of an abusive woman in power (Yuri), which is made clear as Nanno is shown to be fearing Yuri and what all could she do to harm her due to her unpredictability. Yuri uses her higher status and connections to undermine Nanno in any way by subjecting her to psychological and emotional abuse and finally "murder" her for daring to fight back against her and gloating to Nanno she will get away with everything because of her high status. Even Nanno's first meeting with Yuri is almost like a victim being charmed by her abuser before the abuser in question reveals their true colours to them after gaining their trust.

Unreliable Narrator: In "Thank You Teacher", it is revealed that Ms. Aum's son has been dead since her husband left them (due to her own doing, she kills him shortly after her husband leaves) and is hallucinating him still being with her. The case with the BFF episodes. The first half of part 2 is Nanno revealing what actually happened during her school days, vs what was told in part 1.

The 2000s: The flashbacks in the BFF episodes take place during this period, when the former classmates were still in high school, seeing as they use old phones in them. Coupled with the fact that Nanno hasn't aged since then, this is also somewhat proof that she has existed for a long, long time.

The Stoic: Nanno, natch. Subverted in the Wonderwall episodes, where she acts nicer and more like a typical high school student. Of course, this still all part of the facade. Also subverted in "Lost & Found", a significant episode in that it shows that Nanno is capable of having a heart, and this time, the feelings are genuine. She's even seen breaking down in tears when she has to leave TK for good.

Bloodier and Gorier: Many of the episodes in the series are quite violent, but "BFF, Part 2" is by far the most bloody and gruesome. When Nanno reveals that she spiked her former classmates' drinks with poison, everyone starts brutally fighting over the syringe holding the cure, beating, strangling and stabbing each other. Chai eventually gets the syringe in the end and injects the cure into himself, making everyone else start killing him and drinking his blood. The night ends with those who remained alive passing out onto the floor due to the actual contents of the syringe, drenched in blood.

Self-Harm: In "Trophy", when Mew is asked to create a piece of art on-stage as part of an open house program at school, she bashes her own dominant arm with a hammer in order to get out of it and blames Pui as the one who did it. Spoiler alert, it doesn't get her out of it due to posting on social media prior that she supposedly can draw with her non-dominant arm. Fong is also revealed to do this in the BFF episodes, having been diagnosed with depression. However, it’s implied that her self-harm is a manipulation tactic she uses to guilt-trip Thap into staying with her, since the first time she did it was after he broke up with after she orchestrated a group attack on Nanno.

Everybody's Dead, Dave: After the entire school chases Bam when she goes to erase all the writing off the cubicle wall in "Wonderwall, Part 2", she finds out the writing is unable to be erased and instead writes that she wishes everyone would disappear to make them stop bombarding her. Everyone does... that is, everyone in the entire world. Bam is the only one left and the episode ends with her desperately calling out if anyone's there to an empty campus, only for her to slowly disappear herself.

Attention Whore: Hann gradually becomes this in "Social Love", continuing to fake a relationship with Nanno because of the clout and the attention it brings him. The principal of Lerdvidthi School in "Trophy" counts as one as well. Even when Mew paints a genuinely bad piece of art on stage proving that she did not create the paintings she said she did, and a student from the school of the real artist Mew plagiarized from exposes what she did, the principal completely ignores the cold hard facts in favor of the attention Mew's "art skills" bring him and his school.

Fan favorite TK from "Lost and Found" is a notable exception. When Nanno points out that she gave him what he wanted most, his father's attention, at the cost of being arrested and spending time in juvenile detention, he considers that a fair price and thanks her for her help. Dark Is Not Evil: Nanno has dark hair and is supposedly the daughter of Satan, but she's only there to expose the sins of humans who are worse off than her and she even is shown to fall into a relationship with TK. Averted with Yuri who is fully pure evil.

Enemy Mine: Nanno and Yuri are primarily at odds with each other through season 2. However, they'll (nominally) work together to hurt their more evil targets. "Liberation" in particular features the duo working against a strict, oppressive school system. Granted, Yuri finds a way to shove Nanno out a window as part of the scheme, so they still find ways to hurt each other while focusing on other targets.

Kids Are Cruel: A running theme throughout, but is most exemplified with how downright evil Nanno's former classmates treated and alienated her in the BFF episodes and with how Nana, Tuptim, and Yuri would hire men to violently assault girls from school they didn’t like for blackmail material. As the series progress, Yuri herself proves to be as worse as the students Nanno takes down. Averted in the cases of "Lost and Found", "True Love" and "Liberation" as T.K. in the former episode is a kind person who Nanno falls in love with while in the latter two episodes, the students agree with and support Nanno.

Mugging the Monster: Nana and Tuptim really thought they had an easy mark in Yuri, setting her up to be raped violently for blackmail material and being their obedient poverty pet, who they could boss around and throw money at. Even before Yuri absorbs some of Nanno’s powers from her blood in the bathwater the rapists drown her in to keep her quiet, she was a force to be reckoned with. This also foreshadows Yuri being an Unreliable Narrator, making Nanno and the audience question whether Yuri is really a sociopathic fraud who fabricated her entire life.

Breather Episode: In a very much dark and gritty series, there are bound to be at least one episode which is much lighter and ends on a positive note: "Lost and Found": Nanno falls in love with TK and at the end, reunites him with her father. However, she is forced to leave him because of her job. "True Love": Nanno helps students and Ms. Nareumol find love at the end of the episode, with the latter finally embracing her sexuality and getting together with the teacher, Linda. Considering this was only the second episode of Season 2, since the rest of the season grows more and more bleaker with Yuri's entrance.

Laser-Guided Karma: The premise of the series. Nanno makes sure that her victims get their deserved karma. It's especially noticeable in "The Ugly Truth", when Mr. Win has sex with Nanno, she asks several times if he's sure he wants to have sex with her and whether he knows what he's doing is wrong. In a lighter but bittersweet version of this, TK gets what he wants in the end (to be with his father) but karma comes in and he has to lose something just as important, Nanno. Subverted with Yuri and Junko in "The Judgement", who are the only ones to be a Karma Houdini in the series and walk off without any consequences of their actions.

Status Quo Is God: In "Social Love", Nanno falls into a coma after falling off the school rooftop, leaving Hann to take care of her for the rest of his life. Nanno is A-OK in the next episode, now in a different school as per usual. At the end of Wonderwall, Bam's final wish erases the entire human race, and possibly even Nanno herself, from existence. This is only the seventh episode of the first season, and the rest of the series continues as if nothing happened. This is horrifyingly Subverted in Season 2, since Yuri has got Nanno's powers, she makes sure that Nanno never recovers and comes back for another mission, leading to a lot of Surprisingly Realistic Outcome.

Dramatic Irony: In "Lost and Found", Nanno questions why TK is thinking she'll disappear. TK responds that he thinks that she'll just go away when she finally has had her fun. Considering that previous episodes had her laughing maniacally at the chaos she sows, he has a point. Most of the students and teachers would refer to Nanno as a "psycho bitch", not being aware that she was not the person they should be worrying about...

Despair Gambit: In the last two episodes of Season 2, Yuri plans a huge one against Nanno to make her mortal and die as a result, as a "karma" for Nanno for punishing and subduing her in "Liberation". Starting in "Jenny X" when she sees Nanno helping Jane out of her situation, she decides to needlessly meddle in that as well so that it will drive Nanno into stealing Jane's identity which will make her feel guilty as a result and later in "The Judgement" when she sets Junko free in order to attack her own mother, deducing that Nanno might end up trying to save her, which she does and it results in Waan spitefully stabbing her for interfering. Yuri is finally happy that her plan to overthrow Nanno is a success and forms a Big Bad Duumvirate with Junko. Though it's still debated at this point if it was a Failure Gambit on Nanno's part.

Sliding Scale of Beauty: The all-girls school in "The Rank" uses a system to rank its students based on beauty. It's treated like somewhat of a caste system, with the top ten students being treated like the elite or royalty, living in a pristine mansion while other students have to deal with sub-par living conditions. Being fat is also treated as unbeautiful, with Chompoo, a plus-sized student, being in the lower ranks and treated like a lower lifeform by others. Only when she loses weight, thanks to Nanno's advice, that she rises up the ranks and wins the Shining Star award. This, of course, satirizes how much our society values outward appearance versus what's inside.

Expy: Nanno is one of Tomie with the main difference being that Nanno is not as evil or self-absorbed as Tomie. However, after "The Judgement", Yuri is revealed to be the true expy of Tomie since she fits all of her qualities like torturing people for her own sadistic amusement just to gain profit and wealth. TK from "Lost And Found" is partially based on Tracy Di Vincenzo from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Like her, he is also Nanno's first love who at the end becomes a Lost Lenore for her, luckily unlike Tracy, he survives. But sadly after the events of Season 2, it's unknown if the same can be said for Nanno... Speaking of which, Nanno and Yuri's dynamic could be compared to Walter and Jesse's from Breaking Bad/ In both situations, Jesse and Nanno take in an abused doormat (Walter and Yuri) to help them out with their issues surrounding their bullies and financial problems. But as the series progresses, both Walter and Yuri end up getting drunk with power and grow more and more unhinged and psychopathic to the point where they begin to abuse and torture both Jesse and Nanno, the ones who took them in to help them.

Hate Sink: Yuri. While it's understandable that she was tortured by the two mean girls in the past, it doesn't justify the fact that she turns into a sadistic and power-hungry bitch after getting Nanno's powers, to the point she uses them to kill people out of pettiness and amusement, regardless of whether they are innocent or evil and asserts her dominance over Nanno. Dark Secret: In the BFF episodes, most of the former classmates are established to have grown up to live successful lives as adults. However, Nanno shows up at the reunion to expose their dirty secrets: Thap cheated on Fong in their high school days with Nanno under the alias of "Tan". Fong knew about this and was the one who spread rumors about Nanno being a psycho to get revenge. In the present day, Thap is cheating on her once again with Proud, Fong is diagnosed with depression and self-harms, Meng uses his career in fashion photography to take advantage of underage women, Bell's cosmetics company sells fake products, Chai doses on steroids to help him as a bodybuilder, Kai is a money launderer and Wit escaped prison, paying for someone else to take his place. Yuri is also revealed to have her own dark secret where she is a sociopathic sado-masochist who masks her true identity with an innocent and friendly poor schoolgirl facade in order to look for her next victims to torture and inflict pain and suffering on them.

Darkest Hour: The Season 2 finale "The Judgement" serves as a huge Trauma Conga Line for Nanno. Yuri defeats Nanno by trading her life to gain more power and become the new god along with Junko as her henchman and go on to kill millions, with nobody being able to stop their reign of terror.

Faking the Dead: Season 2 culminates in Nanno seemingly being Killed Off for Real, hinted at by an offhanded line by Yuri claiming that she's become mortal. However, the epilogue implies that this is what's really happening; Nanno seems to be faking her death to get away from a world where everyone always does as they please.

Literal Genie: In form of the, well, bathroom stall wall in the Wonderwall episodes. Writing anything on it will make it come true. As you might expect, things go horribly wrong.

Pet the Dog: Despite her cruelty, Nanno is known to do some acts of kindness. "Lost and Found": She may have had TK be framed for stealing the money of the principal, but it was all in the hopes that he gets to be with his father again. Unlike most students being angry at her, TK thanks her and understands that this was karma for his thieving ways. "True Love": Thanks to Nanno revealing everyone's secret loves, Mrs. Naruemol gets to find love with her female co-worker, with applause from faculty and students alike.
