Mayans M.C. is a television drama series from the FX network; it's a spin-off from Sons of Anarchy, taking place two years after the events of the finale. Created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, Mayans M.C. revolves around the titular Mayans Motorcycle Club, the "frenemies" of the Sons of Anarchy. It tells the story of Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes, a prospect in the Mayans charter on a California/Mexico border town. EZ is the gifted son of a proud Latino family, whose American dream was snuffed out by cartel violence. Now, his need for vengeance drives him toward a life he never intended and can never escape. It stars J. D. Pardo, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Richard Cabral, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo, Danny Pino and Edward James Olmos.

comment
Dying Town: Santo Padre is a pretty poor town to begin with but it survives due to being close to a border crossing. When the border crossing is closed in season 3 due to Potter's machinations, the town quickly goes bankrupt and can't afford basic services like trash collection. The increased law enforcement presence means that even illegal businesses start to lose money.

Anyone Can Die: Just like in Sons of Anarchy. So far, Kevin Jimenez, Devante Cano, Riz, Ramos, Montez, Dita Galindo, Steve, Ibarra, Anna Linares, Coco, Gaby, Canche, Erin, Jay-Jay, El Banquero, Manny, Happy Lowman, Sirena, Luisa, Jess, and Creeper have bit the dust. By the end of the series Diaz, Hope, Felipe, Isaac, Downer, Miguel Galindo, Sofia and EZ himself join the list as well.

Underestimating Badassery: EZ and Angel are confronted by two white motorcyclists on "being in our territory" and laugh at what they think are just some punks who saw some TV show and dressed up". When the two exit later, they find themselves met by nearly twenty members of a very real and strong gang. This is then subverted because while these "Swole Boys" are mean and tough enough to force two Mayans to flee, they quickly fold when the Mayans and Sons of Anarchy show up in force to retaliate.

Framing the Guilty Party: Needing to show progress against the rebels, the Mayans point a group of mercenaries at a vicious gang of human traffickers and claim that they are actually a rebel cell. While backing up the mercenaries, the Mayans make sure that none of the Olvidados are taken alive and then plant evidence like propaganda pamphlets and cell phones used to call rebel leaders.

Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Santo Padre is a financially strapped town that requires a lot of dirty dealing to keep running. In season 2, it's reported the town suffered from various issues but can't get the budget to care for it with the Mayor openly complaining about millions spent "on a fucking Wall" but nothing in federal funding. This means Miguel and Emily face competition for any of their bids as the city simply can't afford to play favorites, even for someone like Miguel. This comes up again in season 3 when the border is closed and now the town is suffering majorly without the wave of immigrants or various services coming over the border. It's openly stating over half the town is now unemployed and they can't even pay the garbage men.

Bittersweet Ending: Very bitter, but a couple characters do get a decent ending. EZ's treachery is exposed, culminating in the Mayans stabbing him to death. Angel, although traumatized for killing his brother, is allowed to go free with Maverick. Shortly after, armed police units storm the clubhouse, presumably arresting or killing everyone inside. Sofia is murdered by Bottles right after discovering she's pregnant. Miguel is murdered by Emily before he can grant himself full immunity. Letty chooses not to seek vengeance against the Mayans and seeks refuge with the Broken Saints. And Alvarez finally gives up his life with the MC, choosing instead to be with his wife as she gives birth to their new baby boy.

Would Hurt a Child: One of the rebels is a young girl whose face has been viciously burned by the application of a hot iron, a mark of a past encounter with one of the cartels. Galindo burns a taco vendor's son alive, alongside his father, as a message to the rebels for kidnapping his son. When the rebels identify Galindo's young spy in their midst, they push him off the roof of a building onto a pile of discarded glass panes, killing him. Leaning on the Fourth Wall: In the series finale, Isaac begs EZ not to kill him just yet, saying that "this can't be it." and "there has to be more." This eerily mirrors how both the viewers as well as the writers felt going into the final episode, especially given that many plot threads were forced to be resolved quickly, anticlimactically, or not at all. The way EZ blows Isaac's brains out in the middle of him saying "I'm not ready for this to be over" could not further prove the point that the writers wanted to make the show longer, but couldn't.

Disproportionate Retribution: The Mayans find out that the Vatos Malditos M.C. are operating a human trafficking ring in their territory. The Mayans shut it down by killing every VM member north of Mexico, which might seem justified except that Bishop questioned why they should get involved at all until he found out the traffickers were another M.C. who failed to make a phone call letting the Mayans know they were going to be operating in their territory as a courtesy. While the Mayans hate trafficking they don't have a hard rule against it like the Sons do about drug dealing in Charming. Conversely, Coco may have told Bishop offscreen about Leticia's arm being sprained by one of the two VM she met. Coco was too low-ranking to be in the room, but Bishop would have been motivated on his behalf.

Right for the Wrong Reasons: When Alvarez and Bishop find out that Coco is having secret meetings with a mysterious Latino woman, they start to suspect that Coco and Angel might be giving information to the anti-cartel rebels. Coco and Angel are indeed working with the rebels but Coco's secretive behaviour is caused by a personal matter and has nothing to do with the rebels. The Latino woman is his estranged daughter, Leticia, but they think she's Adelita, the leader of the rebels, due to their sharing the same diminutive nickname. Loophole Abuse: In "Kukulkan" two Mayans are harrassing EZ because they were friends/the cousin of a Mayan that EZ revealed to be stealing from the club which got him killed. As a prospect EZ is not allowed to hit a full patched member until Coco "Orders" EZ to beat the crap out of the two of them, when they complain about it, Coco points out he was following a patched brother's orders.

Big Bad Wannabe: the "Swole Boys" M.C. try to look and act tough but are really a bunch of gym buddies who seem to think throwing on a patch and riding a bike was cool, when they pick a fight with the Mayans it gets answered quickly when the Mayans and Sons show up at their clubhouse (Gym) armed to show them why you don't mess with outlaw M.C.'s.

Latino Is Brown: Thankfully averted. While most of the Mayans depicted are the typical brown Latino depicted in most USA media, there are Mayans of Caucasian-Latin complexion, like Luisa, Angel, Ibarra (who is blue-eyed even) and Guero.

The Coup

The Coup: In season 3, the relations between the Santo Padre chapter and the other Mayans chapters reach a new low and Bishop refuses to obey orders from the other two Kings. The Arizona chapters are caught in the middle and fear for their survival without the heroin brought in by Santo Padre. EZ proposes that Santo Padre and the Arizona chapters ally and cut ties with the other chapters unless they also disown the Kings. The ultimate goal is to dethrone the Kings and have Santo Padre take over full leadership of the Mayans organization. Later in the series EZ invokes a founding rule of the MC to dethrone Alvarez, the founder of the Mayans himself, in order to wage full war on the Sons of Anarchy And in the final episode, after "Kady" reveals EZ's deal with the DEA to Bishop, the latter carries out another coup against EZ with the aid of Hank, Gilly, Guero and Nestor.

Anti-Climax: The final fight against Isaac and the Sons of Anarchy...isn't. The Mayans effortlessly storm a SAMCRO bar armed with bats and slaughter many of the Sons in a one-sided fight. Shortly after, EZ beats the snot out of Isaac in an equally one-sided fight before shooting him in the forehead. The whole confrontation lasts less than five minutes.

Earn Your Happy Ending: Most of the characters end up dead, arrested, or traumatized by the series finale, but Emily Thomas is the one character who makes it through mostly unscathed. She ends up murdering Miguel before he can grant himself immunity, and later kills Luis, framing him to make it seem like a murder-suicide. Because there's no security footage of her, it's likely Emily won't be charged with anything, meaning she and Cristobal can live their lives free of Miguel. Angel is forced to take part in EZ's execution as a test of loyalty to the Mayans but is allowed to leave the club in order to raise Maverick away from the violence and criminal activities rooted in MC culture and give him a chance of a peaceful life.

Generic Ethnic Crime Gang: A Samoan crew appears as minor antagonists. The Mayans themselves could be seen as this; while lots of outlaw M.C.s have Hispanic members, very few are all Hispanic, and most pop culture portrays outlaw M.C.s as all white — the Mayans, however, are an almost exclusively Hispanic motorcycle club.
