Pawn Stars is a reality show on The History Channel about a three generation pawn store called the "Gold & Silver Pawn Shop" operating in Las Vegas (713 Las Vegas Boulevard South, if you're ever in town). It features historical and rare objects being bought and sold by a family of characters.The owner of the shop is Rick Harrison, a shrewd businessman who often finds the most obscure and sometimes bizarre things being brought to his shop to be sold. As he has been in the business for a long time and has other hobbies of his own, Rick is generally knowledgeable in music and American History (especially firearms). When presented with something that is outside of his expertise and/or needs a more detailed appraisal, he calls upon an assortment of experts who are Proud to Be a Geek, who are usually the ones giving the history lecture.A big part of the show, which anyone familiar with basic business sense would know about, is that Rick is generally not willing to purchase an item unless he can get it for about 60% of its market value, and that's not considering any additional costs such as restoration or cataloging, because otherwise he won't make a profit for himself. And not all items are brought into the store itself, as they are often asked to look over exceptionally large items or collections.Also on the show is Rick's father and co-owner Richard, known as "The Old Man". His purpose is to reprimand workers for being lazy, be the butt of old jokes, and tell When I Was Your Age... stories. Rick's son Corey, known as Big Hoss, also works at the store and is learning the business in order to someday inherit the store (as of season 6 he's given a 5% partnership) - which leads to some father/son conflict. The fourth main character is Austin "Chumlee" Russell, a longtime friend of Corey and the shop Butt-Monkey, who is hinted to be smarter than he looks. Tragically, Richard "The Old Man" Harrison died at the age of 77 on June 25, 2018, causing production to halt for some time. Thankfully, however, the other three soon picked up where he left off, and the series resumed airing new episodes shortly thereafter.The 2022-2023 season, for the first time, saw some sweeping changes to the familiar format. Instead of following potential sellers who have come to Las Vegas to visit the pawn shop, the Pawn Stars themselves have hit the road, traveling to cities across the country in a Retool known as Pawn Stars Do America.The popularity of Pawn Stars has led to it becoming something of a franchise for History, and has launched the following spinoffs: | |
