Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })A 2006 Chinese television series directed by Clarence Fok and produced by Tsui Hark. The series is the television series counterpart to the 2005 film Seven Swords, also directed and produced by Tsui Hark.In the mid-17th century, the Manchus Empire has conquered the fallen Ming territories and establish the Qing Empire. They forbid the common people from practicing martial arts and possessing weapons, in fear that it would entice rebellion. The Red Spears Society, an anti-Qing resistance movement, was one such rebel organization, and has been under increasingly intense siege from the army. Two young fighters, Han Zhibang and Wu Yuanying, broke out of the siege and follow Fu Qingzhu, a former executioner seeking to redeem himself, to Mount Heaven to seek help from Master Huiming, a reclusive martial artist and sword forger.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })Huiming allowed his four apprentices – Chu Zhaonan, Yang Yuncong, Xin Longzi and Mulang – to join the three on their quest to save the country from the Qing government's persecution. Each of the seven receives a special sword from Huiming, and eventually they earned the collective name of "Seven Swords".The TV series expands greatly from its movie counterpart, introducing new characters and settings, and develop the existing ones beyond the ending of the movie. Like the movie, its characters and plot are based loosely on the literary works of Liang Yusheng, but structured more similarly to the classic story of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 film Seven Samurai.
