Stargate Origins is a Prequel series in the Stargate-verse, and the fourth canonical series, following SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe. It consists of ten webisodes, each about ten minutes long. The first three episodes were released on February 14, 2018, with the remaining episodes released weekly thereafter. In 1928, archaeologist Paul Langford (Connor Trinneer) unearthed an unusual artifact in Egypt: a giant stone ring, about twenty feet in diameter, with hieroglyphs not matching ancient Egyptian. Ten years later, he and his daughter Catherine (Ellie Gall) have made no more headway in understanding the object, but SS occultist Wilhelm Brücke (Aylam Orian) knows what it really is, and plans to use it to help the Nazi cause. The Langfords must team up with British officer James Beal (Philip Alexander) and local guide Wasif (Shvan Aladdin) to stop him.MGM announced the new series at SDCC in July 2017, in conjunction with a new streaming platform, Stargate Command, which has since gone offline.

Stargate Origins / int_19fc58a2 | comment |
A Lighter Shade of Black: Aset may be as power-hungry as any other Goa'uld — but she genuinely loves her Harcesis, seems to be quite well regarded by the Abydonians, isn't into sadism as much as her contemporaries (her breaking the Wand of Horus seems to be motivated by a desire to not look weak in front of Brücke rather than genuine malice) and when she discovers Catherine is Langford's daughter mindwipes them both instead of killing them in recognition of their family bond).

Foregone Conclusion | |
Stargate Origins / int_3bc88a7f | comment |
Foregone Conclusion: Professor Langford, Catherine, and Kasuf will all survive (as the Professor will oversee transport of the Stargate to the United States and Catherine and Kasuf will be still be alive by the time of the original feature film). Likewise, something will happen to make them forget about these events (as the elderly Catherine has no memory of Abydos, nor does the older Kasuf recall encountering the Tau'ri when Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill, and their team arrive decades later).

Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome
Stargate Origins / int_3fafbfd4 | comment |
Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome: Downplayed. In "The Torment of Tantalus", Catherine says that she was twenty-one during the experiments in 1945. Origins takes place c. 1938–39, but she's clearly not 14–15 years old (dating a British Army officer, and played by 21-year old Ellie Gall). Granted, the original Stargate film portrayed her being about ten years old in 1928, so there was always a timeline problem with Catherine's age anyway.

Downer Ending | |
Stargate Origins / int_4e3d253b | comment |
Downer Ending: Ra returns to Abydos, and prevents Catherine and co. from making a clean escape. James is killed, along with Aset and nearly all of the Abydonian villagers. Wasif and Motawk survive but are brainwashed into becoming Horus Guards, Kasuf survives but is also brainwashed into returning to Nagada and has his memories of meeting the Earthlings erased, and Catherine and her father survive and return to Earth, but also have their memories of the journey erased, and a lack of funding means their study of the Stargate will go on hold for several more years.

Continuity Nod | |
Stargate Origins / int_9dab0a6e | comment |
Continuity Nod: Many to the film and early SG-1: The ground shakes when the gate is dialed. Travelers exit the wormhole cold and covered in a thin layer of frost. Catherine still has the Eye of Ra pendant. She'll eventually give it to Daniel Jackson. Both of them are mistaken for agents of Ra by Kasuf because of the pendant. Catherine is the one to break off the seventh symbol on the cartouche depicting the gate address for Earth; when Daniel found this same cartouche in his original trip to Abydos, he assumed that the seventh symbol had been worn off over time rather than deliberate action. The Germans used a Jeep to provide enough energy to dial the gate. Thirty years later, a time-displaced SG-1 will use the exact same technique. Brücke hints that the Nazis have a DHD in Berlin. We know that it will eventually end up with the Russians, then destroyed in an attempt to save Teal'c's life.
