In August 2023, it was announced that the series had been cancelled.Not to be confused with Catherine the Great, a more straightforward dramatization of the Empress's life that was released in 2019.

Turns out Simitz used to sexually assault him and Grigor in front of Peter The Great, who found it hilarious. She still doesn't want her husband to kill the guy, thinking it won't help take the pain away, but she tells Simitz "I have much sympathy for his position".

The biggest liberty the show takes is compressing the timeline — and in all fairness, the real House of Romanov experienced a rapid turnover in the early to mid-18th century, with five different emperors/empresses in sixteen years, that could have been hard for viewers to keep track of and isn't really necessary to the story that the show's trying to tell. note In reality a) Peter was Peter the Great's grand-son rather than his son, and several of his relatives had ruled before he took the throne as opposed to him inheriting it directly b) Peter had yet to become Emperor when Catherine married him; he was the adopted heir of eccentric Aunt Elizabeth who was the Russian Empress at the time, as she was Peter the Great's daughter rather than his sister-in-law, c) Catherine and Peter were married for eight years before they ever even had sex, d) when Elizabeth died — seventeen years after their marriage — Peter ruled for barely six months before Catherine launched her coup and overthrew him, and (e) Catherine gave birth to three children during those seventeen years, besides having two miscarriages; a daughter, Anna, who died in infancy and two sons, Paul and Alexei, who were eight years and a few months old respectively at the time of the coup (Alexei was definitely fathered by Grigory Orlov, and while Peter was 'officially' Paul's father, Catherine implied very strongly in her memoirs that the real father was her lover at the time, Sergei Saltykov).
