The Legend of Dugu (Chinese: 独å¤å¤©ä¸‹, Dugu Tian Xia) is a Chinese series starring Hu Bingqing, Li Yixiao and Ady An as the titular Dugu sisters. The series is set during the final years of the chaotic Northern and Southern States era in Chinese history, in the state of Western Wei and its successor, Northern Zhou. Since the fall of the Eastern Han dynasty more than 300 years prior, China has never been unified under a single dynasty (apart from the years between Sima Yan's rule after unifying the Three Kingdoms to the fall of the Western Jin in 316); the Disaster of Yongjia in 311 opened the floodgates for non-Han tribes to invade China. The series dramatizes the lives of Dugu Xin and three of his daughters, as the clan deals with a prophecy: " å¸�星未明. 然， 独å¤å¤©ä¸‹". (Di Xing wei ming. Ran, Dugu Tian Xia, "The Emperor Star is unknown. But, the Dugus shall have China.") With the prophecy hanging over the clan, the three Dugu daughters soon find themselves embroiled (willingly or otherwise) in political alliances and upheavals, as factions seek to prove or disprove the prophecy.However, history has the answer: Dugu Banruo (An) would only become an empress posthumously, after her husband Yuwen Yu ascended the throne during the Northern Zhou dynasty; her youngest sister Qieluo (Hu) would become the founding empress of the Sui Dynasty, which would finally unify all of China note Qieluo's daughter Yang Lihua would become the penultimate empress of the Northern Zhou; Qieluo's husband Yang Jian would later rely on him being the father of the last empress dowager of the Northern Zhou (Lihua) to seize power.; Mantuo (Li), the middle sister, would become the matriarch of the Li clan, who would establish the Tang Dynasty 37 years after the founding of the Sui.Not to be confused with Queen Dugu, a 2019 series that focuses on only one of the sisters (Qieluo/Jialuo) while the other two are minor characters. | |

Artistic License – History: Like The Empress of China, several settings have been simplified or changed. The 8 Pillars (柱国, "zhu guo") existed during the previous Western Wei Dynasty and not the Northern Zhou Dynasty. note The title of "Pillar" had been given to individuals before and after the Western Wei. However, the 8 Pillars of Western Wei and their families formed part of the core of what would be known as the Guanlong Faction, which would heavily influence imperial politics during the Sui and early Tang periods. Also, even during the Western Wei era, the head of the 8 Pillars was not Dugu Xin but Yuwen Tai, regarded as the founder of the Northern Zhou. On the other hand, Yang Zhong himself was never a Pillar, but he was one of 12 Generals who served under the Pillars. note Like the 8 Pillars, the 12 Generals and their families also formed part of the core of the Guanlong Faction. Yuwen Hu was Yuwen Tai's nephew, but he was only younger than his uncle by a few years; by the time the Northern Zhou was established, he was already in his early 40s. Also, when Yuwen Jue died, he was still in his teens and not an adult as depicted in the series. Historically, Yuwen Yu was a formidable character, so much so that Yuwen Hu poisoned him in order to get rid of him quickly before he could reclaim more power. Historically, Li Cheng is the name of (Tang Gaozu) Li Yuan's elder brother, but there were no records of Li Bing having any other wives or concubines other than Lady Dugu. note Historically, Li Yuan had other older brothers, all of whom were posthumously declared as princes after Tang was established in 618 C.E.. Also, it was Li Bing's father Li Hu who was one of the 8 Pillars of the Western Wei, but he had passed away before the founding of Northern Zhou. In the series, Banruo lived to become empress; historically, she passed away before Yuwen Yu became emperor. note Yu crowned himself Emperor about 2 years after taking over from Jue. Also another Pragmatic Adaptation, as this change allows the series to avoid answering the historical mystery of why Yuwen Yu chose to declare himself Emperor. Before that, he had been ruling under an alternative title "Heavenly Prince" (Tian Wang), which was also used by Jue. Also, Yuwen Yu did at least have one other consort, Lady Xu. Historically, by the time Gao Zhan was emperor of Northern Qi, both Dugu Xin and Banruo had passed away. In-series, Lihua was portrayed as the daughter of Banruo and Yuwen Hu, with Qieluo falsely claiming her niece as her own daughter in order to protect the child. Historically, her parents were indeed Qieluo and Yang Jian. Historically, while Yang Jian did pass away 2 years after Qieluo, the circumstances of his death were not as simple as depicted in the series. note Qieluo passed away in 602 C.E. while in her late 50s. However, the series left out the changing of the crown prince from Yang Yong to Yang Guang, and her role in said change. 2 years after her death, Yang Jian fell ill at Renshou Palace and later died there. How he died was a historical mystery; while some accounts said that he died of illness, others claimed that Yang Guang had his father killed. An amalgamation of the two theories suggests that while ill, Yang Jian had received a letter from Guang which was meant for Yang Su, an important official, (but was erroneously delivered to him) discussing matters to attend to after the emperor's death. Angered by this, Yang Jian then attempted to contact the former crown prince Yong and intended to make Yong heir. Guang then got wind of the arrangement, and sent troops to surround Renshou Palace. Thus, Yang Jian died due to a combination of the illness and the shock and stress from the coup attempt. | |
