Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Ultraseven (sometimes Ultra Seven or Ultra-7), the third entry in the Ultra Series, is more serious, had very sophisticated writing and plotting, and its style is purely Science Fiction, as opposed to its kid-friendlier predecessor. Ultra Seven is an iconic character, in fact so successful that he (and actor Kouji Moritsugu, who played Dan Moroboshi) has appeared in many subsequent shows and movies, even starring in Ultraman Leo seven (no pun intended) years later. Decades later, Seven receives a Spin-Offspring, Ultraman Zero.Stationary Post Observer (or Agent) #340 from the M78 Nebula was surveying the Milky Way one time. He flew down to planet Earth when he saw a selfless mountain climber named Jiro Satsuma do a Heroic Sacrifice to save his friend on a mountain climbing journey (Think the movie Vertical Limit). Agent 340 rescued Satsuma in the nick of time, and was so moved by the man's courage that he decided to stay on our planet and patterned his human identity on Satsuma's, going by the name Dan Moroboshi. People would come to know him as Ultra Seven, champion of Earth against alien attacks.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })The show received an American dub, a co-production of Turner Program Servicesnote the syndication arm of Turner Broadcasting, which also distributed Starcade, The Wonder Years and (post-1991) Hanna-Barbera series; it was eventually absorbed into Telepictures Distribution in 1996 and in turn into Warner Bros. Television Distribution in 2003 and Cinar in 1985; however, for various reasons, the episodes weren't shown until the mid-90s, when TNT dusted them off.

Bizarre Alien Biology: Gabora (?) from "The Fugitive Fortune Teller" could only be destroyed if the spaceship carrying him was blown up, which he took advantage of by using his disembodied head to attack and bite Seven. Chibull transformed into a giant brain with eyes and tiny appendages, but only when Android Zero was destroyed. Dinosaur Tank combined a living creature with a mecha. Iron Rocks was a sentient battleship. Petero was a giant cactus-like alien who could fire jets of water from an unusually-placed mouth next to his one eye. Annon was an eyeball living in a rock, which took the vague shape of a prehistoric monster. The Pole Aliens were all limbs and head, no midsection. The Kanan and Pitt Aliens had oversized eyes, like flies The Kappa Aliens looked just like their folk tale counterpart. Both the Godora and Pegassa aliens are insect-like. Pegassas had a head like a hammer shark's. Eleking was a cross between an eel and Godzilla. Mikuras resembles a bipedal bison. Alien Wyar was all branches and leaves Alien Bira looked like a stingray with a lobster's tail. Alien Metron looks like an upright fish. Guyros is a cross between a starfish and an octopus. Alien Wild is a a yeti Alien Goron is a gorilla with a tail.

Crucified Hero Shot: Episodes 39 and 40, complete with Eye Lights Out after sending a beacon signal to Space Station V3 so that his teammates could find him. It didn't work. From the same two-part episode, Soga was stuck on the outside of one of the Guts' flying saucers, x-style. In "Showdown at -140°", he recharges his body by flying up into the Sun, hovering with arms outstretched and feet together. Seven flew with arms outstretched at about 30 degree angles, which gave him a crucified shape.

Does This Remind You of Anything?
 Ultraseven / int_14ed6ab7
comment
Does This Remind You of Anything?: That was the reaction to Episode 12 among a support group for survivors of the atomic bombs in Japan He hides inside a rock, but space monster Ammon is just one big eyeball... On a serious note, the victims of the alien spores in "The Targeted Town" go on violent rampages, pass out, and soon after forget what happened, reminiscent of some descriptions of alcoholics' behavior. One of the Godora aliens, disguised as a woman, shows up at the Ultra Garrison Boiler Room to watch the bomb in there go off. She tells Dan she's not afraid to die... much like a suicide bomber. From "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet": Robot Commander looks like Hitler. Robot Commander's treatment of his secretary looks like Domestic Abuse. His guards wear uniforms reminiscent of Soviet or DPRK army uniforms. Robot Commander claims that humans built robots hundreds of years before Dan and Soga's arrival, then took over the planet, enslaving humans. Robot Commander was by then in need of humans to sustain the machines. Seems the machines from Zero One ran with the idea ... The Spehl Aliens, apart from the real life controversy that got Episode 12 banned, give off a paedophilic vibe.

The Right of a Superior Species: In "Dark Zone", the Pegassas expected Earth to change its orbit on a dime to avoid a collision with their space colony. Since that wasn't going to happen, they would have destroyed the Earth anyhow, seeing as any planet not advanced enough to comply was not worth their time. Since the Ultra Garrison and Dr. Miyabe's Defense Barrier got in their way of an invasion and got one of their alien vessels destroyed, Alien Bado was willing to blow up the Earth.

I Surrender, Suckers: In "Project Blue", Alien Bado pretended to beg for mercy after Seven had the upper hand during their fight, only to produce some kind of stabbing weapon, which he tried to poke Seven in the face with. Seven then tosses him headfirst against some rocks. Alien Plastic did something similar, so Seven tried to fly off, only to be frozen in place. Dan was promised by Dorothy Andersen's imposter that the Pedan aliens would stop their invasion of Earth after he convinced her that Earth's "invasion" of Pedan was a misunderstanding. Turns out they wanted to invade Earth anyway.

Daylight Horror: Most alien threats take place during the day. The human incidents in "The Targeted Town", as well as Dan's encounter with Alien Metron and their earlier threat to him (he was run off the road by a "driver-less" truck), nearly all took place in broad daylight. (Soga and Furuhashi had their freakout incidents indoors, so it's hard to tell when they happened.) The Guts aliens invoked this with their planned execution of Seven.

Stock Footage: The destruction of major world cities in Episode 49 was lifted frame-by-frame from The Last War, which featured effects by Ultraman creator Eiji Tsuburaya. Footage was also used for various segments on the original Cartoon Planet in the mid-90s, generally as "universal travel guides" narrated by Space Ghost; this was possible thanks to Turner having commissioned the dub and subsequently running it on TNT (making it fair game for the editors to use- everything in the Turner library was up for grabs).

Humans Are the Real Monsters: The rationale for most alien attacks. Poignantly so in "Dark Zone" and "Envoy from Nonmalto", the latter comes to a conclusion where even Dan is left wondering if it's true... The show was pretty big on this, yes. In one episode an alien puts funky space seeds in cigarettes to erode the trust between humankind and cause our civilization to collapse. The narrator assures us that the episode could only happen in the future. Why? Because people don't trust each other enough in the present. Then again in a slightly later one the narrator almost seems to be encouraging this, when he says that if you see a suspicious person you should call the Ultra Garrison, because they might actually be an evil space invader. The Pedan impersonating Dorothy Andersen calls out the Ultra Garrison for sending an "exploration" rocket to planet Pedan. Their "invasion" caused the Pedans to invade Earth in retaliation. Ends up being a subversion, because despite Dan convincing them it was a misunderstanding, The Pedan aliens admit they wanted to conquer Earth anyway. The Ultra Garrison blew up Starbem Guyron's home world by accident, thinking it was uninhabited. Cue kaijuu attack.

Meaningful Background Event: In the episode "Escape From Area X" Dan is seen covering his ears while an Ultra Garrison staff officer is explaining the concept of virtual space to Kiriyama. This may look like a blooper, but Alien Bell, which was hiding in that virtual space, emits an ear-piercing ring that bothers and eventually harms humans, but it can and does stun a Human Alien like Dan. It seemed like Dan's hearing could pick up the sound no matter how faint. Cue the ear piercing ring coming out of the radio a few seconds later.

Even if Dan is not in his best shape, how could he zone out for 40 minutes and fail to warn the UG in time to prevent the arrival of Pandon without incurring the ire of Kiriyama? Double dose of subversion in "Stolen Time". After an act of sabotage in the Radar Room, Dr. Yushima, under alien control, calls Dan an alien spy (half-truth). Dan claims that Dr. Y is under alien control (he's telling the truth). Since Dr. Y is a respected scientist and Dan attacked him (Dan saw him plant a bomb in the boiler room), Dan is thrown in a cell. The Ultra Garrison doesn't believe either claim, anyway.

Dramatic Timpani: The opening theme begins with one, which Tohru Fuyuki borrowed from a Leitmotiv used within the show, possibly the one called "Space Monster"note that theme has two versions: a slow one with a horn section, the same one Fuyuki rearranged for Ultraman Leo; and a faster one with only percussion, used for example in Episode 20

What Happened to the Mouse?
 Ultraseven / int_863fa679
comment
What Happened to the Mouse?: Episode 17 features a literal example of this trope. In the beginning a miner named Jiro, who is identical to lead character Dan Moroboshi because Ultra Seven saved Jiro's life and based his human appearance on him after the latter nearly died performing a similarly selfless act, runs back to save a miner's pet mouse from death during a mysterious cave-in. Both are trapped in the mine, and the plot of the episode centers on the Ultra Garrison attempting to free him. Throughout the episode Jiro talks to the mouse (named Lucky) for comfort and yet when Ultra Seven rescues Jiro towards the end of the episode ... we never see what happens to the mouse. Ultra Seven didn't even know it existed, so in all likelihood it was just left to die in the mine or killed in the explosion that follows. Which means that not only does the audience (many of whom would have been children) never receive any resolution to that character arc, but for all we know the entire point of Jiro becoming trapped in the mine, and thus the entire point of the episode's plot, has been negated. Agira and Mikuras weren't mentioned in the show after their final appearances. In Agira's case, Dan never called him back in Episode 46. All Capsule Monsters would show up again in other continuities.

Artistic Title: Episodes 1-13 feature an opening logo with scattered paint particles that shake to form the word Ultraseven in Kana; the remaining episodes feature a swirling twin-whirlpool paint effect similar to Ultraman's opening, the logo appearing in two words, one at the center of each whirlpool, the word Ultra higher and to the left. In all episodes, the logo is followed by the opening credits sequence proper, consisting of silhouettes of Space Station V3, mecha, Dan, and Seven set against a wavy (think lava) multi-color background that changes color as it moves. The Cinar dub of the series had an Animated Credits Opening, which featured lots of laser effects and an animated Ultraseven flying towards the screen.

Filling the Silence: The Cinar dub adds synth music during moments of silence or sound-effects-only scenes. Take the dump truck scene from "The Targeted Sound", for example. In the Japanese version, the scene with the dump truck trying to run Dan off the road has no dialogue or music until the truck stops. In the dubbed version, the scene begins with a droning synth chord, taking away from the suspense. Same with Furuhashi's sudden fit of anger.

Mood Whiplash: Examples: Part of the setup for Episode 39 (a daytime patrol by two Ultra Garrison members that came up with nothing but a happy scene at an amusement park full of unsuspecting people), compared to what happened after Dan and Anne run into the Guts aliens... The was a hilarious moment in Episode 24 "Return North!" when the Kanan aliens, operating out of a lighthouse, place Windam under their control, causing him to attack Dan. Dan transforms and "defeats" his friend by wearing him down, complete with "Fight! Ultraseven" playing in the background. This happens just as Furuhashi has a close call with an airliner.

In episode 40, the Ultra Garrison tried to rescue a crucified Ultra Seven from the air by firing an Applied Phlebotinum beam into Seven's Emerium lamp. Too bad it was a hologram.

Dan's got 15 minutes to free himself and disarm a bomb, or the base will blow up in "Come in, Max". In 15 hours, the victims of the alien spore in "The Human Farm" will die if a cure from Saturn isn't administered. Ultra Hawk 2 is too slow; it'd take the rocket 3 days to reach Saturn. Cassandra Truth: Double dose of subversion in "Stolen Time". Played straight in "Dark Zone" with the Ultra Garrison's telling Alien Pegassa the Earth can't change its orbit at will as well as their offer to evacuate their Space Metropolis inhabitants to Earth.

What the Hell, Hero?: Both Kiriyama and TDF Chief Yamaoka got one from a subordinate for not evacuating the base quick enough during the huge blizzard in "Showdown at -140º", causing unnecessary casualties. In "Glory for Whom", Dan calls Aoki out on his recklessness. Soga and Kiriyama call out Kurata in the last episode after he accused Dan of failing to prevent the alien invasion and being a coward. The Pedan alien who negotiated a truce with Dan in "The Ultra Garrison goes west Part 2" laughed when Dan defended the UG, who according to him went to planet Pedan on an "observation" mission. Imported Alien Phlebotinum: In "Seven Assasination Scheme", the rock that Furuhashi's car racer friend sent him from Africa could produce a powerful beam to revive Seven in time to prevent his execution by the Guts aliens. "Radiation Alpha 73" from Saturn in "The Human Farm" is the only thing that can cure an alien infection. The big rock in "The Green Terror" is made of Tilsonite 808, a metal not found on Earth.

Public Execution: In "Nightmare on the Fourth Planet", Robot Commander staged live executions of insubordinate humans that aired on TV for his amusement. Dan and Soga didn't realize these executions were real when they first witnessed them as they happened. Instead of quietly killing Dan, the Guts Aliens figure they'll capture Seven, show him to the world for less than 24 hours, and assassinate him just as the world looks on. They thought the people of Earth would surrender quickly after.

The end of "Showdown at -140 degrees", when the snow melts. The sun came out in full force after Seven was revived in "Seven Assassination Plan" Part II. The end of Episode 22.

You Are Number 6: The explanation for Ultra Seven's name is he's the unofficial seventh member of the Ultra Garrison with the way he keeps showing up to save their bacon. Lampshaded in the Cinar dub. Also, Stationary Post Observer # 340, as his commander called him in "The World's Greatest Invasion". Dan Moroboshi is a Sixth Ranger, and based on the above rationale, the sixth Ultra Garrison member. In Ultraman Leo, he's MAC # 1 (Commander) to Gen Otori's # 7.

Power Degeneration: Due to injuries from his previous battles, Seven became weaker by the time his superior appeared to order him to return home. Dan's vital signs were so far out of whack (pulse 360, blood pressure 400/?, temperature 90ºC) that he should have been dead if he'd been human. Seven could barely stand, his Emerium beam wasn't strong enough, and he had poor control of his Eye Slugger, which thankfully he recovered in his second fight with Pandon.

Dark Reprise The darker version of "Fight!
