Brave Frontier was a Mobile RPG game developed and published by A-lim in Japan, where you can collect units, fuse them with others to improve them, and evolve them into even better ones. Gumi Asia released the game outside Japan. As a whole, the story is divided into three arcs taking place in different worlds. You play as a Summoner chosen by the God of the Gate, Lucius, traveling from Elgaia to Grand Gaia to defeat the Four Fallen Gods, starting with Maxwell the Fallen Creator. Having up to five units in a squad (with one more provided from a friend), you battle against a series of enemies and undergo Quests as you travel through each world. Along the way you can summon or capture more units, gather resources such as Zel and Karma, and acquire equipment called Spheres to slowly build and strengthen your own army of mighty summoned units. Towards the end of the first arc however, it is revealed that Lucius has a hidden agenda that the Summoner must stop. After Lucius is defeated, the demons of Ishgria then roam loose and this kickstarts the second arc.In the second arc, the Summoner and his/her companions go into another world known as Ishgria in order to stop the hordes of demons trying to invade Grand Gaia and save Tilith from her fate as a living barrier holding them off. To achieve this, they explore the inhospitable realm tracking down powerful demons known as the Demon Lords, defeating them to reduce Ishgria’s demonic presence. Towards the end of the arc, there is a massive power that looms around Ishgria and it is revealed that it belongs to one of the Divine Ten Gods, Holy Emperor Karna Masta, whose seal threatens to come loose and wreak havoc. In the third and last arc, despite Karna Masta being defeated by the Summoner, the Summoning Powers that were originally the curse of Karna Masta himself still existed. The power becomes unstable after Karna Masta's defeat and it's up to the Summoner to restore the Summoning Arts by defeating the Sealed Gods on other worlds and also prevent Karna Masta's brother, Alza Masta, from being freed from his slumber. Meanwhile, a shady organization known as the Abel Faction tries to stop the Summoner and his/her companions in order to achieve their hidden agenda to take over Elgaia.Needless to say, even if the main story is mostly focused on the Summoner and his/her companions, there are many other stories centered around the Units you summon, one of the most important being about the war between humanity and the Gods. Even then, there are yet more stories that also took place in other worlds such as Ishgria, Elgaia and so on. Due to this, Brave Frontier has its own character page to cover their various stories. It used to be available to play on the mobile operating systems Android, iOS and on mobile versions of Windows. Links included the Apple Store, Google Market, Kindle Fire or Microsoft Store. It was announced on January 31, 2022 that the Japanese servers for Brave Frontier, along with its sequel and Brave Frontier ReXONA, are to be terminated on April 25, 2022, with the global servers following on the 27th.The same company made a (licensed) Final Fantasy-branded clone called Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.

The ages of NPCs are revealed in the first official artbook. comment
As a result, units with high innate HP and ATK are valued (especially with the way Status Buffs works) - the Anima and Breaker Types in turn are desirable, while the Oracle Type is The Scrappy with the Guardian Type being stuck in the middle. The Lord Type on the other hand, has base stats. This disparity has been lessened with the increased importance of DEF; the developers have acknowledged this by at least changing the stat penalties of the Guardian and Oracle Types.

Game-Breaking Bug: A rather irritating one occasionally causes the game to register the current Quest as having twice as many battles it actually has, although the boss will still be fought after the correct number of battles. Once the boss is defeated, the game will try to load up the next battle, even though the Quest should have ended at this point, and then crash. Since there's no way to complete the Quest at this point the only option is to quit, throwing out all of your spoils and wasting your time and Energy.

Bonus Dungeon: Technically, the entirety of Cordelica was this, but now you need to finish it in order to unlock Lizeria, and then the Agni Region. Defeating each of the final bosses of an entire set of quests of a world (Maxwell, Grantos, Cardes, Defense System, Zevalhua, Afla Dilith, Eriole and Tesla, and Lucius) opens up one. All of them will grant a Gem when cleared, but the first two (Skramya and Grand Jelly) will net you a Burst Frog, and all others after them (Valmodora, Lagzal, Verdute, Ordas Derva, Garnes, and WST-1096) will reward you the extremely rare Sphere Frogs. The Grand Gaia Chronicles dungeons, which includes three quest levels based on the lore of a set of units (Including the Six Heroes, the Saviors of Palmyna, Kikuri and Sefia, Ten-Winged Tormentor, Disastrous Beast, the Twelve Guardians of the Gods, the Elgaian Refugee Leaders, the Six Armors, the Elgaian Leaders, The Six Pillars, The Oracle Knights, Avant, Zelnite, and Kulyuk so far) that rewards very powerful Spheres. There are also the Extra Trials of Lugina, Seria, Karl, Xenon & Estia, the Battle Maidens, and more; all of which will also reward very powerful Spheres.

Boring, but Practical

Boring, but Practical: The Status Immunity Extra Skills of 7-Stars and Omni units who specializes in curing and nullifying status ailments. They may seem redundant at first and extremely boring when compared to other flashy potential Extra Skills, but the ability to give your anti-ailment unit unrestricted variations of other Spheres is extremely valuable, turning it into one of the best Extra Skills you could ever ask for. Grahdens' Leader/Friend Skill improves all of your units' stats and mitigates some damage from Light and Dark enemies. It may sound lame, but he improves your survivability considerably and gives elemental advantages to your entire team, both of which are further helped by the massive amount of Light and Dark enemies and bosses in the game. And he's a free unit to boot! If you beat his Trial, that is. Overall, there is a good reason why Grahdens is regarded as one of the best units in the game despite his lower evolutionary level... which has since been raised. As of 2018, Grahdens' Omni version is considerably outclassed by other units with mitigation leader skills that do much more damage, such as Keres.

Heroes Prefer Swords Four of The Six Heroes wield swords as their weapons, and one of the two who didn't use a sword ended up with a forked lance that looks more like a sword. Zigzagged among the Sibyl Sisters, where each side has one of their members use a sword in battle. However, both sides were originally for saving humans before one side did a Face–Heel Turn.

Constructed World: As a whole, Brave Frontier features multiple worlds. Initially, the player goes back and forth between two High Fantasy worlds, their homeworld being Elgaia, where most of humanity now lives after fleeing from a genocidal war in the other world, Grand Gaia, which once had prosperous nations until the aforementioned war ruined them all. The second arc of the story then takes you to Ishgria, a world full of battle-hungry demons kept chaotic because of constant warring everywhere, then the third arc takes you across a few other worlds with their own cultures: the first used to be a technologically advanced place until a robot went on a rampage, the second was a feudal society that is much like ancient Japan in all but name, and the third locked in an eternal ice age. Exclusive to the Global version, ever since the Paradox Blossoms, there have been vague mentions of some world Zeruiah lived in that Juno-Seto arrived and Ensa-Taya invaded, with more information about this world given through related Units and full-blown multiple Grand Quests that shed light on this now-named world, Aimyhr, with even Grand Quests that take place long after the Void's invasion. There are other Grand Quests and Unit batches that take place in their own worlds, which are then all tied by one Grand Quest where the Summoner meets a few characters from these worlds, like the Light and Seth.

Status-Buff Dispel: Comes in two nasty varieties, which you'll see frequently as you take on the game's harder content. Some bosses will strip away whatever buffs you currently have cast on your units, and this includes the all-but-necessary 50% Damage Mitigation. Others can also cause Leader Skill Lock, a debuff that negates the effects of your team's Leader Skill for multiple turns.

The Bariura chapter has Tilith fully explain the concept in the game’s setting. The gods as humans know them are not necessarily gods so much as really powerful entities that they began calling them as such; Tilith compares the diversity of gods to how birds of every shape and color exist. For these gods, the only ones they consider 'true' gods are the Divine Ten: Lucius, Karna Masta, The Four Fallen Gods, and, unmentioned, Kulyuk, Felice, Sarturus and Raval.

Disc-One Nuke: Recruiting a friend with a much higher level and a unit stronger than yours can give you a huge advantage early on in the game. However, this effect is lessened since your friend's unit has a cooldown timer until you can use it again, making it essentially so that you can't have that overpowered unit doing everything for you. With a little luck, you can get Mifune as soon as you beat the Monsters' Nest, i.e only the fourth area in the game. And as mentioned under the Game Breaker entry, Mifune is a nuke that keeps on nuking, much like Starly. Exaggerated with the release of 7-Star units and Omni Evolution units, where Selena can solo nearly everything if she has her Extra Skill activated when equipped with the Lexida Sphere, namely the first two Trials and Vargas' Grand Gaia Chronicles dungeon quest set. Scratch that, if you managed to summon Erza during the Fairy Tail collaboration, she can almost literally solo every single thing in the game, apart from end-game content such as Frontier Rifts

Bribing Your Way to Victory: In the form of Gems, which you can buy with real money, and are used for recharging your Energy, filling up your Arena, Frontier and Raid Battle orbs, summoning rare units, instantly reviving all your fallen units in the middle of battle, expanding your unit and item inventories, unlocking more Raid Emotes, and as well as increasing your maximum number of friends. Needless to say, players who can afford to pay for Gems enjoy a great advantage over those who can't. However, it is possible to acquire Gems for free in-game, but they come very few and far between.

Guide Dang It!

Guide Dang It!: Most materials acquired from Raid Battle. Some of them drop from certain parts of a boss, like their wings or legs, and you need to kill that part first to even have the chance of that item dropping... But the problem comes when that part has CRIT Resistance, more DEF and HP than all of the other parts together, or when you have people who have no idea what to do joining you to help kill the boss, which basically and automatically ruins your chances of killing that part first unless you manage to do so before they do.

Status Buff
Brave Frontier (Video Game) / int_7b4ac30a
comment
Status Buff: Most are not named by any guides, but they include: The Regen status. An increase in the HP, ATK, DEF, REC or CRIT status of a unit. An increase in the Brave Burst, Spark or CRIT damage of a unit. A slight increase in a unit's Brave Burst Gauge for every Spark or Critical Hit dealt. An increased number of hits that a unit can deal per normal attack. Enhanced chances of Brave Crystals, Heart Crystals and Items dropping from enemies. More effective Brave and Heart Crystals. Prevention of the above status ailments from happening. The enhancing of a unit's capabilities with additional elemental or ailment-inflicting properties. The former allows your units to have an elemental advantage against enemies regardless of their original element, while the latter allows them to debilitate their enemies despite normally lacking the ability to do so. Damage Mitigation, which reduces the damage that your units will take by a percentage. This becomes crucial when enemies begin using attacks with a ridiculous amount of hits, begin to apply DEF-ignoring buffs on themselves, and fixed damage attacks that can kill most units in an instant without this and Guarding... or both. Shield, where a percentage of a unit's HP is used to create a temporary protective barrier that soaks up damage in place of the unit, without having to sacrifice the unit's current HP. Resurrection, where a unit will automatically revive once when it is close to being downed, usually healed from 1 HP to full HP. Stealth, where a unit will be unable to be targeted by an enemy until the effect comes off. Taunt, where a unit will force enemies to target only it, allowing other units to attack, heal or buff themselves without repercussion.

Luck-Based Mission: Since whether or not a defeated enemy gets added to your collection is based entirely on chance, any venture in which your goal is to acquire a specific unit inevitably becomes this. It gets especially grating in cases where getting the unit you're looking for to even show up at all is in itself a Luck-Based Mission, since the order of enemy formations that appear in the various dungeons is also completely random. Basically, you'll get what you want - when you want it - if the game happens to be in a good mood.

Competitive Balance: Each unit, on an individual basis, has a different Type containing bonuses and penalties that affects their stat growth, much like Natures. Each Type can play to the strengths or weaknesses of a unit, which in a meta sense, determines their overall worth as a unit. The types are like the following equivalents: Jack of All Stats for Lord, Glass Cannon for Breaker, Mighty Glacier for Anima and Guardian and Fragile Speedster for Oracle (if you interpret speed by how fast the unit recovers).

Infinity +1 Sword

comment
Infinity +1 Sword The Summoner's Research Lab gives you a nerfed version of the boss from the Trial you've just beat, and they tend to be on the higher end of the power spectrum. So far in the Global Server there's Karl, Grahdens, Maxwell, Cardes, Zevalhua, Afla Dilith, Ark, Xie' Jing, Gazia,Lucius, and Karna Masta Exaggerated with the release of Strategy Zones, which offer Omni versions of Maxwell, Zevelhua, Afla Dilith, Xie' Jing, Cardes, Lucius, Karna Masta, and his brother, Alza Masta Grand Quests gives you the materials to evolve some Mock units to their 6-Stars form and also house some powerful Spheres on their own. They aren't too hard, although getting the most out of them requires some dedicated grinding and Energy commitment. For example, to get the 6-Stars form of Grahdens, you'll need 4 different squads and a minimum of 240 Energy to cover for the cost of getting the 100% achievement score. The Grand Gaia Chronicles quests will give you powerful Spheres after clearing a set of three or so difficult dungeons. Every one of them is required to be completed to get them so they can activate the Extra Skills of their respective owners' 7-Stars or Omni forms. The first six sets gives you Spheres based on the weapons of the Six Heroes. The Palmyna set gives you a Sphere based on Edea's armor, Lafdranya. Sefia's and Kikuri's set gives you Spheres based on Sefia's blades, Kikuri's hairpin, and an ownerless crown that manifested itself from the sheer power that Sefia and Kikuri unleashed during their duel. Michele's set gives you Spheres based on Melchio's armor and Duel-GX's remains. Lira's set gives you a Sphere based on the core that contains the soul of her father. The Twelve Guardians of the Gods' set gives you two Spheres that were found in the battlefield where the Guardians' conflict took place. Refugee Leaders' set gives you the stone that guided the group to accomplish their mission. Reeze's set gives you a part of the device that Reis sent to Reeze. The Six Pillars set gives you a part of Feeva's crystal that was left behind after they fought Lucius. Arus's set gives you a necklace that was passed down for generations, with it's current holder being Arus. The Oracle Knights' set gives you the bracelets of Ark and Ilia, which were given to them by Lucius. The Resurrected Flame gives you Avant's original sword, Dandemagus, before he lost it due to amnesia. Zelnite is Here! gives you The Jewel Ghost that Zelnite befriended. A Master's Wisdom gives you the gem that Kulyuk held. Heroes of a New Era gives you the sword given to Rouche by Reed. Blue-Blood Revelation gives you a crystal that could predict the future, created by Mariela for Karl. Obtaining high ranks in Frontier Hunter, Arena, and Raid Battle will give you purposefully overpowered Spheres and units. The units you can acquire in Frontier Hunter are Seria, Lugina, Paris, Tilith, Tesla, and Eriole. And for Raid Battle, there's Noah and Owen. Lin and Elise are in there too, but they're acquired through their respective Grand Quests instead. The Sacred and Demonic Treasures are this both in-lore and in-game. To the point the sole human to survive the War of the Gods was the one who equipped the complete Sacred Treasures set, Will. Beating some extra Quests and Trials will now also give some materials to evolve some Mock units to their 7-Star forms. Mission-wise, it's Paris, Lugina, Seria and Karl. Trial-wise, it's Owen, Grahdens and Tilith.

One Stat to Rule Them All
Brave Frontier (Video Game) / int_b798d379
comment
One Stat to Rule Them All: The HP and ATK stats used to be so much better than everything else, since HP is extremely influential to your units' survival and ATK increases their damage output, while DEF often scales badly with them and REC is redundant past a certain point unless they're at very low health.

Summon Magic: You amongst many others use a magical technique called the Summoning Arts, hence you being a "Summoner". This magic calls forth the souls of ancient heroes to fight for their Summoner, translating to you fielding five units (the sixth being a friend’s unit) in gameplay. Lucius is the one who grants you this power in the beginning, but in Bariura, Ark drops this bombshell: before being sealed by Lucius, Karna Masta cast a 'curse', that any human who steps into Grand Gaia will receive the Summoning Arts and potentially use it to slay the gods, especially Lucius. Not wanting to throw the world’s balance of power into jeopardy, but needing pawns to kill the Fallen Gods since he’s nursing wounds from the War of the Gods, he selects people in Grand Gaia to become Summoners by letting the curse through his gates. Once the Fallen Gods were down, the unpredictable, destructive element that is humanity was next.

Damage Mitigation, which reduces the damage that your units will take by a percentage. This becomes crucial when enemies begin using attacks with a ridiculous amount of hits, begin to apply DEF-ignoring buffs on themselves, and fixed damage attacks that can kill most units in an instant without this and Guarding... or both.

Outside-Context Problem: The final bosses of each world (as well as a former special event boss) are not obtainable units.

Area of Effect: Although most units have Brave Bursts that affect their enemies, most bosses are also able to damage all of their opponents at once, with or without using their Brave Bursts. This also especially applies to some of them as their Brave Bursts often involves healing or supporting their team instead.

Grand Gaia Chronicles, a loose adaptation of the Grand Gaia Chronicles, starting with the Six Heroes' story and then the Twelve Guardians of the Gods. Light of the Meirith, another Prequel detailing the last Guardians of Meirith's early days, focusing on Colt and a newcomer named Rahm.

Our Gods Are Different

Our Gods Are Different: In this game there are different gods with varying degrees of greatness, including: Helpful gods like Lucius and his disciple, Tilith, who asks you to beat the villainous Fallen Four Gods. At least at first. Unit characters who have reached the title of God when evolved, like 5 of the Six Heroes in their 5-Stars forms. Unit characters who are already Gods, or close enough such as the Disciples.

Hailfire Peaks: Present in water-based levels, where you'll see Mermen and pirates (Pirate Verica) in a snowy path (Mistral's Egor Snowfield) or a yeti (Wendigo) deep in a ship sunk down the ocean floor (Amdahl's Ghost Ship Legnia). This is because Water and Ice are grouped together as a single element. And things get weirder as you go through seemingly single-elemental levels mixed with different elemental monsters like encountering a small tree (Polevik) in a room filled with lava (Past Special Event's Blistering Cave).

Combination Attack: When two or more units hit an enemy at the same time, they create a Spark that deals more damage. If two Omni units of the same element spark and do a certain amount of damage, they trigger a Resonance effect, where they get bonus Atk/Def/Rec, Overdrive fill, and elemental mitigation. The new Dual Brave Burst feature allows certain pairs of units (Juno-Seto and Ensa-Taya, for example) when fed Elemental Golems of one or both attributes, to perform a super powerful Dual Brave Burst. They also activate an Elemental Synergy buff depending on the attribute combination of the two units. The synergies are: Aurora, Blaze, Tsunami, Tremor, Abyss, and Plasma (Light/Light, Fire/Fire, Water/Water, Earth/Earth, Dark/Dark, and Thunder/Thunder respectively) deal Damage Over Time to any enemies of the attribute that they're strong against. Blast (Fire/Thunder) resurrects all dead allies and makes your team invincible, but when the turn limit runs out, everybody dies. Cyclone (Thunder/Dark) lets everybody resist one attack that would normally knock them out. Eruption (Thunder/Earth) has a chance to negate the Purge status effect. Magma (Fire/Earth) has a chance to negate the BB and Overdrive Drain status effects. Miasma (Water/Dark) reduces the power of healing skills used by a single enemy. Mist (Water/Light) removes the Amnesia status effect and reduces the amount of BC needed to activate Brave Bursts. Obsidian (Earth/Dark) replenishes some of the items you have on hand. Nova (Fire/Light) has a chance to purge Lock effects from your party. Prism (Earth/Light) deals a lot of damage after the actual DBB, and boosts the Attack of everybody else, but the user is knocked out until the next battle. Quagmire (Earth/Water) breaks all enemy shields and activates a Non-Elemental shield on your party. Radiance (Light/Thunder) has a chance to purge HP and Heal reduction debuffs. Steam (Fire/Water) adds 5 Synergy Shards to your current count, then goes on cooldown for up to 5 turns. Tempest (Thunder/Water) has a chance to purge and negate the Turn Skip status effect. Twilight (Light/Dark) raises the party's max HP in relation to their Rec, and raises the max HP buff limit.

April Fools' Day: In 2014, a special dungeon opened up involving Burny and Friends (who are pretty much the weakest enemies in the game) taking over the Adventurer's Prairie, the beginning area of the game. If you completed said dungeon for the first time, you would get a special Sphere. But the dungeon was anything but easy, seeing as how Burny and Friends can attack your units multiple times in the same turn and pretty much had the health of powerful bosses. Done again in 2015. This time, they put a farmable material called "Jem" that dropped in that dungeon which was required to craft a Sphere that decreased a unit's stats by 50%. 2015, JP: The Vortex's music was changed into an 8-bit version of itself for half of the day, and then into an orchestral version for the rest of it.

Crossover: The Battle Maidens, the Soul Bound Saga units, and two of the three Christmas units are all borrowed directly from Puzzle Trooper, another mobile game developed by A-lim. They've been given different names, but otherwise they remain identical to their Puzzle Trooper counterparts. As of 2018, Global has also had a Fairy Tail collaboration, along with multiple crossovers events with Brave Frontier Europe. Currently has nine in the Japanese version: The first is with the Emperor's SaGa, which is a case of No Export for You for Global Server players. Deemo, Vocaloid, Chain Chronicle, Tales of Link, Phantom of the Kill, and Final Fantasy Brave Exvius have also shown up in both versions of the game. Other crossovers include Terra Battle, Thousand Memories, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, The King of Fighters, and Guilty Gear. I AM HERE! Summer 2018 brought My Hero Academia into the mix.

Alternate Self: Omni Evolutions are based on What If? versions of the characters, had they avoided their original fates. This is more pronounced with the Japanese version of the game, where they are known as Dream Evolutions.
