Fallout 76 is the ninth game in the Fallout series; a spinoff serving as the first official multiplayer game in the series. It was developed by Bethesda Game Studios for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows, and released on November 14th, 2018.It's 2102, and Vault 76 is an okay place to live. No, seriously, it is! Constructed in the heart of Appalachia to celebrate America's tercentenary in 2076, Vault-Tec really outdid themselves — everything's been running just as advertised since the bombs dropped 25 years ago, and soon the day will come when you reemerge to start rebuilding.Actually, wait, that was this morning. What time is it? Seems you overindulged a bit at the Reclamation Day party last night, and in the excitement you got left behind. Thankfully, the Vault's still in plenty good shape, and with the help of the robots that have been left behind you're able to get packed and ready at your own pace, picking up your Pip-Boy 2000 and C.A.M.P.note "Construction and Assembly Mobile Platform" on the way out.You emerge into the lush forests surrounding the Tricentennial Monument at the Vault's entrance, only to find the outside world eerily empty. While the fires of the nuclear holocaust may not have ravaged West Virginia as badly as the rest of the nation, the piles of fresh corpses and roving packs of mutants make it clear that something else did. You'll have to work together with your fellow Vault Dwellers to fend off the hostile wildlife, keep yourselves alive, and make a new life in what remains of Appalachia...Built using the Creation Engine (retrofitted with Quake netcode), Fallout 76 focuses on survival and building mechanics. Taking inspiration from other survival games like Rust and DayZ, the game allows players to play online with up to 23 other players to build settlements, fend off Super Mutants, feral Ghouls, Deathclaws, and other mutants of the land, and advance through the story presented. On June 10th, 2019, Bethesda released the Nuclear Winter DLC, which includes a 52-player battle royale where players will fight to the death for the right to become the overseer of Vault 51. Players have to scavenge gear, build structures, and avoid getting killed by other players, the wildlife itself, and the encroaching ring of fire. The Nuclear Winter mode was later removed from the game in September 2021, with most of its formerly-exclusive rewards (excluding the Vault Boy statues) being integrated into the main game as rewards for completing public events.A later DLC, Wastelanders, dropped on April 14th, 2020 and featured the much-requested return of fully voiced human NPCs, dialogue trees, and an expansion to the main quest involving two factions, the idealistic, friendly Settlers and the ruthless, pragmatic Raiders, vying for a legendary treasure hidden somewhere in Appalachia. Two story expansions, Steel Dawn and Steel Reign focusing on a expeditionary force of the Brotherhood of Steel have also been released. In December 2021, the Night of the Moth update was released, introducing a Cult of the Mothman subfaction. In March 2022, the Invaders from Beyond update was released, re-introducing Zetan aliens to the world of Fallout 76. September 2022 saw the addition of "Expeditions" (repeatable randomized missions in areas outside the main West Virginia map) to the game. The first of these Expeditions expansions, The Pitt, sends players to the ruins of Pittsburgh previously featured in Fallout 3 on two separate missions: "Union Dues" (set in Pittsburgh's industrial district and steel foundry) and "From Ashes to Fire" (set in an industrial ruin called "The Trench" and a cathedral and former safehouse known as "The Sanctum"). In December 2022, the Nuka-World on Tour update was released, introducing a Nuka-World traveling roadshow in the Ash Heap region. At the end of February 2023, the Mutation Invasion update was released, bringing mutated enemies previously only found in Daily Ops into public events at the top of every hour. June 2023 saw the release of the Once in a Blue Moon update, introducing two new cryptids to the game (the Blue Devil and the Ogua) as well as a new quest line for the Blue Ridge Caravan Company. The Xbox Games Showcase that same month also teased the future release of a new Expeditions expansion, Atlantic City, which Bethesda later announced at the Tokyo Games Show would be released in two parts, with the first Atlantic City expansion, Boardwalk Paradise, releasing in early December 2023 and consisting of two new expeditions set in Atlantic City, "Tax Evasion" (set in the Casino Quarter) and "The Most Sensational Game" (set in the city's boardwalk, pier and aquarium), as well as adding several new outposts in the Forest belonging to each of the game's major factions.March 2024 will see the release of the second half of the Atlantic City expansion, America's Playground, which will add a third expedition to Atlantic City, "The Human Condition", as well as adding open exploration of Atlantic City proper, with three new main quests and two new sidequests set within it; in addition, a third expedition to the Pitt will be introduced, called "Poke the Beehive" (set within Pittsburgh's underground train tunnels). Bethesda also announced on December 19, 2023 that an expansion of the main Appalachia map would be added to the game later in 2024, into Shenandoah in neighboring Virginia.

Fake Longevity
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_14184bc7

Fake Longevity: The legendary crafting and gold bullion systems in a nutshell. In regards to legendary crafting, the most vital components that you're likely going to need a lot of are modules, which can only be acquired by trading in unused Legendary gear for scrips, and then using said scrips to purchase the modules from Purveyor Murmrgh. The problem is then many-fold, as each module costs 50 scrips to buy, there's a hard cap of 500 (formerly 300, originally 150) every 20 hours that can be gotten from feeding Legendaries to the grinder, and rolling traits on equipment often cost between three and four modules each out of the six you can afford with this amount. Due to the random nature of Legendary crafting, there's no guaranteeing that you can roll the desirable traits with just your daily income. While seasonal rewards can give a lot of both resources, and there are the occasional double scrip weekends, they're far from being reliable methods of farming them. Gold bullion is also a pain in the neck to obtain. While it's not "hard" per se to acquire it, since unlike scrips, Treasury Notes can be farmed to your heart's content by participating in every public event that crops up, one can only exchange up to 40 of them for 400 bullion every day, and most of the valuable items that have to be bought with that currency typically cost in the neighborhood of thousands. It used to be even more frustrating, since prior to Steel Dawn, there was also a hard weekly cap of 1,700 bullion per player.

The Flatwoods Monster: Flatwoods Monsters shows up as Zetan aliens tasked with abducting test subjects for experimentation, which is made all the more easy by their ability to teleport and telepathic control. Colton Pickins is ostensibly one of their victims. They glow purple like the Frametown Monster and as per the Frametown interpretation of the Flatwoods Monster are aliens in suits.

Technically-Living Zombie: Those infected by the Scorched Plague are reduced to bleeding, burned, crazed caricatures with chunks of radioactive material jutting out their flesh, before the sickness kills them and turns them into a statue. But despite their utterly horrendous state, they’re still alive, and are just as vulnerable to mortal injury as anyone else.

Peninsula of Power Leveling: One effect of nukes is that it causes lots of legendary ghouls and ghoulified legendary monsters to spawn in the irradiated area. This can allow you to quickly level up by killing the high-level enemies there, assuming you can keep the radiation at bay. The Whitespring falls victim to nukes on a regular basis for this reason, as it's already infested by ghouls. The radioactive fallout turns them into stronger glowing versions of themselves.

Brainwashed and Crazy: The Blood Eagles swell their ranks in part by subjecting captured hostages to various cocktails of highly-addictive chems and then exploiting their fractured mentality when withdrawal sets in to break and turn them into one of their own. Necessary Drawback: Turrets offer a significant defense for your C.A.M.P. or workshop. The game limits your ability to place them by making them take up a considerable portion of your construction budget when built (15% for the missile turret, for example). You accomplish this by going out and killing starred legendary monsters and Scorchbeats, or by finishing Enclave events. Ten of any combination of those will make you a General. A cut quest was supposed to go even further, where players would compete with each other for the position of President of the Enclave in a PvP-enabled public event that involves traveling across Appalachia and accumulating ballots in your favor, culminating in a king of the hill-style standoff at the Watoga Civic Center where the winner takes all.

It's an incredibly hilarious sight to see where a perfectly visible player is just sitting peacefully in the middle of a room, while every single hostile around them is searching fruitlessly and frantically for minutes on end. In most cases, the only way for enemies to find you is if you physically bump into them.

Mythology Gag: The player uses a Pip-Boy 2000 MK VI, an updated version of the Pip-Boy from the original two games. Mutations and their effects on the player's stats can also be seen as a reference to how one's attributes could be permanently altered when exposed to too much radiation in the first two games. The Scorched are a likely reference to how Feral Ghouls acted in the first two games before they were Rewritten as Technically Living Zombies in the later games — The Ferals were still hostile to virtually everyone else, but could also utilize weapons and armor. A wooden toy soldier, designed in the same style as MacCready's, can be seen beside the TV in the teaser trailer. The crashed satellite seen in the trailers is almost an exact recreation, both visually and thematically, of the BOMB-002 satellite from Fallout: Van Buren. Once you exit Vault 76, you can never return ever again. This time, you really can't. The Gourmands raider faction share their name with the White Glove Society's restaurant "The Gourmand" in Fallout: New Vegas (which likewise serves human flesh). A computer log mentions that the Mire was created when Vault 94's GECK went haywire, mirroring the plot of the cancelled Fallout Tactics 2. One location in the Cranberry Bog is called "Pylon V-13". Within you can find a log by a scientist attempting to create a portal to travel to an Alternate Universe and Alternate Timeline. It's a nod to the original, cancelled Fallout Online by Interplay, which was codenamed "V13". Scavengers will occasionally say "A desk fan? Who carries around a desk fan?" in reference to a similar line of dialogue from a random raider encounter in Fallout 4.

Awesome, but Impractical
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_2bdae2ae
comment
Awesome, but Impractical: Vendors. They provide quick and easy access to items you need, are relatively common, and are a good way to get rid of unwanted items. Unfortunately, the game is very stingy with caps, items only sell for a fraction of their total value, vendors only retain a fraction of the caps you sell them, they have a hard limit of 200 caps regardless of any purchases you make, and the vendors share cap limits based on one of the seven factions they're aligned to (Responders, Brotherhood, etc). All of these factors add up to vendors being way too costly to use for anything other than purchasing workshop plans and maybe certain rare materials. Stimpaks and other necessities are best earned through scavenging so caps can be saved for more important things like fast-travelling or moving your CAMP. This was later fixed somewhat by giving the vendors a common pool of 1400 caps regardless of faction. While selling prices are still very low, at least you don't have to travel from vendor to vendor to max out the amount of caps you can get per day. Black-powder weapons are among the most powerful weapons in the game, capable of inflicting obscene amounts of damage with only a single shot. This is balanced out, however, by the overall rarity of the weapons' ammunition, as well as being able to only fire one shot before reloading, which takes longer than any other type of weapon. Exaggerated with the Dragon. It's a 4-barreled musket that deals incredibly high damage, but because of this it breaks quickly and it takes a whopping 10 seconds to reload. Gauss weapons are among some of the stronger options you can acquire for specific types of weapons, and they also fire explosive rounds that are further amplified by Demolition Expert for even more damage. The catch is that save for the Gauss rifle, which itself is already quite scarce out in the world, the other three Gauss weaponsnote Shotgun, Pistol, and Minigun require ludicrous amounts of gold bullion to obtain the plans for, and then some for their mods (and the shotgun and minigun are additionally faction reputation-locked). Additionally, they are surprisingly fragile for their cost, with the three bullion weapons breaking very quickly through use and slapping damage-boosting mods onto them will reduce their durability even more, thus requiring frequent trips to the workbench or a stable supply of repair kits to fix them on the go. And, as the cherry on top, the 2mm EC rounds they fire are disturbingly heavy to lug around if you don't have Batteries Included, thus resulting in INT perk bloating, and forcing the player to either sacrifice something else to slot that card in, or learn to live with the giant stack of ammo in their pocket that takes up most of their carry capacity.

While there was a player version of the Scorched Plague that was cut from the game during development, the game scripts simply treat it as a 5% Damage-Increasing Debuff when fighting Scorched enemies and nothing else.

Even Evil Has Standards: The Raiders as a faction in this game surprisingly enough still have standards and lines that they will not cross. Under the leadership of Meg Groberg, they strictly forbid slavery and excessive violence, preferring to only plunder what they really need instead of sacking communities wantonly, and find the more zealous and/or bloodthirsty factions such as the Cult of the Mothman and Blood Eagles too morally abhorrent to their liking. Even their significantly more lawless predecessors, despite being what they were, still found certain practices like the Gourmands' cannibalism to be going way too far.

Money Sink: Fast-traveling costs caps depending on distance from your current location; however the cost is waived for traveling to Vault 76, your C.A.M.P. and any owned workshops, your team members' C.A.M.P.s, and their workshops provided they were captured while you were on their team. The cost isn't spectacularly high, in the single digits for short hops and in the high 20s/low 30s over greater distances. On a similar note, it costs caps to revive at a landmark if it's not close enough to where you died. The same exceptions as above apply. Moving your C.A.M.P. to another location costs caps, unless a placement conflict occurs when switching servers, in which case it's free. The cost seems to be determined by level, capping out at 40. Claiming public workshops costs caps, and the claim only lasts as long as you remain logged in, assuming another player doesn't steal it from you. This generally costs 20-30 caps, depending on the main function of the workshop and the zone it's located in. One example of this is the workshop outside of the Poseidon Energy Plant. If the timed event quest to turn the plant back on is completed, the plant can be used to power many of the buildings from the workshop that require power to run, including resource extractors, and comes with both a pair of heavy turrets and a Vertibot to help protect the workshop from enemies. Shops only retain a fraction of any caps you trade to them, making any purchase a net loss. They also only keep 200 caps on them to begin with, refreshed daily, and will not store any caps above that limit, making purchases above 1000 caps an even greater loss than normal trades.

In this game, players will carry the entire suit in their inventory when not deployed or stowed in the Stash, frame and all, and so to avoid the issue of having your character be weighed down by hundreds of pounds worth of power armor, only the weight of the (relatively light) chassis will be counted, while the fitted pieces and plugged in Fusion Core will be essentially weightless until manually removed and transferred to your bag.

Boring, but Practical

comment
Boring, but Practical: Certain weapons like the 10mm pistol, assault rifle, hunting rifle, and the pump-action shotgun tend to be more practical than some of the fancier weapons (like the handmade rifle and combat shotgun) due to the fact they're found very commonly (being carried by pretty much every firearm wielding enemy), thus making it simple to acquire buildable modifications, find ones prebuilt, and to replace broken guns if you lack the items to repair yours. It also helps that a lot of the ammo is dirt common. In public survival; eating pre-war foods like Cram, Potato Crisps, and boxed steak is much better than lugging around foods that rots like soups, warm steaks, juices, etc, as eventually all that food you prepared is going to be nothing but fertilizer. Same with Boiled Water, since as long as players have a water pump and good source of wood they can make their base more prosperous, whereas Purified Water is used mostly as a secondary Stimpak. The Excavator Power Armor is definitely not the most sturdy or high-resistance model of all available options, but it's considered to be far and away the very best suit by the playerbase due to how easy it is to obtainnote The schematics are learned as part of an early-game quest, and suit pieces are equippable starting at level 25 and the +100 boost to carry capacity, which is a stat that's often one of the harder ones to meaningfully increase for this type of build without the expensive Calibrated Shocks, lopsiding your entire perk setup with various weight reduction cards, or only using power armor for fights while keeping the suit in your back pocket most of the time.

Crapsaccharine World: Appalachia may seem lush and idyllic, but that's only because its problems stem less from the aftermath of the nuclear war and more from the mutagenic killer pathogen plaguing the region. Indeed, the situation is arguably worse than Fallout 3 which was a full on Crapsack World. The entire population of West Virginia has been killed off by the Scorched Plague, the Scorched, and the Scorchbeasts. That's in addition to the hostile wildlife, irradiated water, and regular threats like Feral Ghouls. For once, Super Mutants are the least of the region's worries.

Foregone Conclusion

Foregone Conclusion: It's strongly implied that most of the world events in 76 will be coming to an end within the sixty year timespan between it and the first Fallout, due to there being no more mentions of them later in the series. The Scorched Plague was either eradicated or quarantined inside Appalachia before 2277, as none of the immediately neighboring areas in the Capital Wasteland ever acknowledged it being a thing. Both the Pitt Fanatics and Union factions will dissolve long prior to the events of the third game, regardless of the Resident's actions, being entirely replaced by raiders and slavers that the Lone Wanderer will encounter in Fallout 3. Since 3 established that Owyn Lyons' Capital chapter was the only one in the East Coast region, this indirectly implies that the Appalachian organization either fell apart or seceded from the chain of command entirely, thus hinting that Paladin Rahmani's route was the canonical one for Steel Reign.

Every Car Is a Pinto: Exaggerated, even, considering how they run on nuclear fusion in-universe. As a carryover from its immediate predecessor, almost every vehicle you can come across in Appalachia is a Hair-Trigger Explosive just waiting to blow up in your face. They can be set off by damaging their chassis, which surprisingly enough don't take much punishment at all before exploding with the force of a point-blank mini nuke. While careless players can find themselves blown to high heavens by one of these cars, the crafty ones can just as easily use them to wipe out large mobs of enemies that are bunched up together next to one.

Surprisingly Realistic Outcome
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_3ed23024
comment
Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Most of the people selected to be in Vault 76 were highly educated, often fresh out of college individuals or in general well educated compared to most vault residents, who were so used to being praised for their intelligence that once a bunch of them were thrown into the vault together, they began arguing with each other over their accomplishments to the point where the Overseer was forced to create trophies for people to be appeased. Turns out a culture of people based on achievements and skill can create conflict when they all want to flaunt their skills and talent, but are around people of equal talent or intelligence. You can get diseases from various sources. Certain animals, marked by a biohazard symbol and usually having some form of "disease" in their name, have a chance to infect you if they bite you. Spoiled or rotten food can make you sick if you eat it, the percent chance indicated in the description of its effects. Beds found outside, stewing in the elements for who knows how long, will do the same, the likelihood increasing the longer you use them. Untreated water can give you parasites if you spend too long in it. The Ash Heaps, which are home to various automated mining and industrial concerns, has air so toxic that simply breathing it without a gas mask will cause lung disease eventually. Water in this this game is much more irradiated than in past installments, which applies to both swimming and drinking it. It's only been 25 years since the atomic bombs dropped, even if the area is not as irradiated as it was when they dropped nor was as heavily affected as other places, the water is still highly contaminated, especially compared to the nearly two-hundred years later of games like New Vegas or 4. Water ranges from merely "dirty" to "toxic", depending on your proximity to sources of contamination. Cooking food and boiling water only removes the disease chance and increases healing, unlike in the past two games where it would remove radiation as well. It's impossible to cook radiation out of food in real life, and fully purifying water requires a much more in-depth process, which you can only do by constructing and powering water purifiers. You'll never appreciate your refrigerator more than when you play this game. As you might expect in real life, perishable goods go bad if you just let them sit in your inventory doing nothing. This applies to most forms of meat, plants, and fruit/vegetables. Once something spoils, it becomes harmful to eat, though you can use it as fertilizer for new plants. However, there are perks, and a modification to backpacks, that increases the survivability of perishable goods for longer times until reaching a cooking station or needing to eat them before they spoil. The game on a whole applied this to the normal style of Fallout games until the release of Wastelanders. There were no hub areas to go to and rest, there are no NPCs to interact with and learn about, and if you want to survive, you have to work and create something to live off of. There are much less caps to find, and even if you do, expect to find only a small amount at a time, food and water are now major resources for you to worry about, and your weapons can break easily on the fly. The player has to work and accomplish things like repairing items and creating a farm themselves. Basically, the player has to actually treat the world as a real, livable place if they want to survive. However, since Wastelanders and Steel Dawn, there are three hub areas, with many NPCs to interact with across the world. The Appalachia branch of the Brotherhood of Steel clashed with the Responders, often threatening them for supplies or technology. However, when the Brotherhood found the Scorchbeasts, they attempted to get supplies from the Responders to fight them, but the Responders refused again because the Brotherhood had bullied them so much that they had no reason or desire to offer them help, plus the Brotherhood didn't bother informing them of the threat and why they needed their help. As a result, the Brotherhood ended up without allies and were wiped out because they hurt relations to the point where the Responders just told them off. In turn, this caused the Responders to fall because the Responders were not prepared for the Scorched until it was too late. The remaining survivors of Appalachia were more than enough to fight the Scorched...or they would have been, had everyone not been too busy fighting amongst themselves to unite.

Bleak Level: The Ash Heap contrasts vastly against the Forest and even other wastelands in the series, being where the majority of West Virginia's coal mining industry was centered. After the Great War, it has essentially been blanketed in dust and soot, poisoning the air and causing sludge lung to any unfortunate enough to not be wearing gas masks. There are also coal fires that burn eternally across the landscape.

Always Chaotic Evil: New to the series are "the Scorched", a hostile hive mind of creatures and former humans infected by a deadly plague that are intelligent enough to use weapons (like firearms and blades) in combat, but still near-mindlessly attack anything in their path a la the Marked Men. On the more traditional side of things, there are the Blood Eagles, who are always entranced in a chem-induced high and so hyper-violent even by raider standards that would give the Fiends of New California a run for their money.

If you're successful, the creature will travel to your C.A.M.P., where it will be counted against your construction budget. These creatures can then be used to defend your C.A.M.P. or be sicced on other players. The type of creature determines how much of your budget it will take up, which will obviously be higher for stronger creatures like Yao Guai or Deathclaws, limiting the amount of them you can tame.

Situational Sword: Certain types of weapons are only useful against very specific kinds of targets that severely limit how practical they are. The Scorched Killer mod on specific weapons does exactly what the name suggests, in that it provides improved damage output when fighting Scorched enemies, but with the caveat of doing way less against anything else. Weapons that deal radiation damage like the Gamma Gun and Radium Rifle are mostly impractical in PvE due to how regular enemies don't suffer from Maximum HP Reduction. While they do still have ballistic damage components, that's about the full extent of their power against non-player enemies.

Body Horror: Later stages of the Scorched infection cause the skin of the victims to physically split open, virtually skinning themselves alive and exposing the raw, red flesh underneath, in addition to the green ultracite crystals growing out of their bodies. One of the new mutants is the Grafton Monster, a headless bipedal monster that takes Top-Heavy Guy to a grotesque new level. Reading through the Enclave's research into mutations in the Whitespring Bunker can be a rather harrowing experience, due to the sheer level of bodily mutilation that occurred in the recorded test subjects who failed to develop the Required Secondary Powers to compensate. Some of the more grim examples include greatly enlarged eyes without the required expansion to the skull's eye sockets, resulting in permanent blindness (Eagle Eyes), moving so quickly that the body's musculature and bones tear themselves apart trying to catch up (Speed Demon), or the subject becoming a literal Walking Wasteland (Plague Walker). It's amazing that you yourself won't have to experience these same debilitations when mutated, regardless of if you've contracted them naturally through radiation exposure, or by drinking the refined serums made by the Enclave. The Wendigo is a tall, potbellied ghoul-like abomination with a thin layer of flesh growing over its bones leaving holes in its arms where the bones are too far apart for the flesh to connect. Honey Beasts are giant mutated queen wasps with beehives embedded into their bodies.

Job-Stealing Robot: Before the bombs fell, Appalachia pushed for automation of every conceivable job, from coal mining to military training. This even led to strikes around the mines, as many unemployed miners demanded their jobs back. In an especially egregious case, a ballot measure passed that would replace all members of West Virginia's government with robots by 2087, apparently as a form of punishment for the aforementioned strikes. This ended up being the deciding factor in the founding of the Free States secessionist movement. Parodied and inverted by one of the quotes of the Lumberjack Protectron found near Gilman Lumber Mill:

Similarly, after the subterranean Burrows settlement near Harpers Ferry was hijacked by its security detail (who became a raider clan known as the Burrow Boys), the remaining residents relocated to a nearby shanty town called Mosstown. Since V.A.T.S. criticals cannot miss, it's possible for your shots to make ridiculously wide curves to steer themselves into your target, even if said target is at a sharp incline relative to your position. Hero of Another Story: With no human NPCs to speak of at launch, most of the backstory of the region came from various notes and audio logs left behind by the people of the region who tried surviving before Vault 76 opened. Apparently there were several different factions all with distinct leaders and goals trying to overcome the Scorched threat and the raiders to rebuild civilization. They're all long dead, but the Resident can at least continue their work and finish what they started. With the Wastelanders DLC, various NPCs came back to, or journeyed to, the region, with various stories and goals of their own now that they have new lives and careers in the area, with the Resident able to assist or develop these stories.

In an especially egregious case, a ballot measure passed that would replace all members of West Virginia's government with robots by 2087, apparently as a form of punishment for the aforementioned strikes.

Bribing Your Way to Victory: Severely downplayed compared to most MMOs, in that the Atomic Shop doesn't offer any kind of equipment, resources, or power upgrades of any kind that can be bought with real money, though content release bundles that are offered separately may or may not include valuable items that cannot be obtained elsewhere. What it does offer are scrap and repair kits, as well as carry weight boosters that significantly trivialize the scavenging and managing of your resources, which comprise a considerable portion of the core gameplay experience. The Fallout 1st subscription provides even more egregious examples in the form of the Scrapbox and Survival Tent, the former of which lets you offload all of your crafting materials at the press of a button, and the latter is an indestructible, scaled-back C.A.M.P. that can be deployed separately at no cost almost anywhere in the world (and also contains the aforementioned Scrapbox). For those who regularly make use of power armor and/or gatling lasers, the Fusion Core Recharger station exclusively included with the Pitt Recruitment Bundle is an invaluable boon, but the $29.99 price tag of the pack is a considerable investment for basically free ammo and fuel. At least there is now a way to finally do something about those half-spent cores found in the game world.

Dump Stat

comment
Dump Stat: An invoked discussion among the development team. The question was brought up of how the Charisma stat works in an online multiplayer game that initially had no human NPC characters to influence. For solo players, there are very few perk cards that the charisma stat can be used for, but the stat itself benefits most when playing with other players, as it lets you buff them with your own perks. A later update also opened up the ability to share a specific single-player perk with your entire group and giving them the benefit of that card, as long as your own Charisma stat is at least three times the point value of the card itself. With the release of Wastelanders and the return of actual human NPCs, Charisma has once again seen some real use in dialogue checks in addition to just allowing for more stacking of perk cards, though these opportunities are few and far between, and often require inordinately high point values to pass that meeting the thresholds could render one's build severely lopsided.

The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Super mutants and Scorched frequently wield weapons against you that will not be in their inventory when you loot them. They will be carrying a weapon, but there's a decent chance it won't be the one they were just attacking you with. For example, you may kill a Scorched that was going after you with a sledgehammer, only to loot the corpse and find a switchblade, which isn't even in the same melee category. There are limits to this, however; if you're being shot at by a heavy weapon like a missile launcher or minigun, that will be on their corpse.

Gameplay and Story Segregation
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_6320eced
comment
Gameplay and Story Segregation: The power source requirement for powered armor that was introduced in Fallout 4 returns. It made sense that a game that takes place 10 years after the power sources in pre-war power armors have naturally expired would require makeshift batteries that would power them for about 30 minutes. If there's any mention to the gameplay mechanic change in Fallout 76, then it's a legitimate Retcon. Vault 76 itself has a canon capacity of around 500 occupants and is programmed to seal itself and vent out all oxygen 24 hours after Reclamation day. Being a MMO, a practically limitless amount of players can be coming out of it at any given time, which is even stranger when the world events outside of it have been progressing for more than a year. The 24-hour self sealing is also never witnessed, as a new character can loiter indefinitely inside of the Vault with no ill effects other than hunger and thirst. Supposedly this has been retconned as of the release of Wastelanders, and is even lampshaded by the Overseer if one speaks to her at her home in Sutton, whereupon she will express incredulity of your ability to last "all these months" inside of the Vault after it was opened, suggesting that not all Residents vacated it when it was officially reopened in 2102. This implies that the Vault's resealing now refers to the moment the last occupant left it, instead of a fixed time period after Reclamation Day. Despite the implications of the "Mayor for a Day" quest, the robotic servants of Watoga will keep being friendly to the player indefinitely after its conclusion, regardless of how long ago that was. The player characters inexplicably cannot be infected by the Scorched Plague regardless of how many of these enemies they fought. Even if one were to somehow surmount the many Beef Gates of the Savage Divide and Cranberry Bog to skip the vaccination entirely and battle Scorchbeasts unprotected, they will never be turned into a Scorched. While there was a player version of the Scorched Plague that was cut from the game during development, the game scripts simply treat it as a 5% Damage-Increasing Debuff when fighting Scorched enemies and nothing else.

The Chinese Stealth Armor offers a persistent Stealth Boy effect as long as you're crouching, has decent radiation resistance and reduces your fall damage, but can never be Legendary and pales significantly in comparison to most standard armor builds protection-wise, which helps little when you're detected and stealth breaks, so while the sneaky aspects of it are superb, its defensive values are so weak that an enemy can hurt you significantly simply by sneezing in your general direction.

Formula-Breaking Episode: Although the Fallout series has dipped its toes in many gameplay pools over the years, 76 is the first to incorporate open world online multiplayer (Fallout Tactics had team-based multiplayer and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel had two player co-op), and the first non-mobile game in fourteen years to not be a story-driven RPG (though there is still a main storyline.) 76 features no human NPCs, although this changed with the arrival of the Wastelanders update. After the first trailer dropped, certain higher-ups at Bethesda warned fans that it would not be a "traditional Bethesda single-player RPG"; Bethesda has, however, assured fans that those who are preferable to the single-player games can rest easy; 76 is a spin-off game, and not meant to take the place of Fallout 5.

Gargle Blaster: Comes in two kinds, both of which are variations of moonshine mixed with a bevy of radioactive, sometimes even harmful ingredients. Drinking these understandably gives the player a significant dose of rads as well as potential unconsciousness in one case. Nukashine. It requires Nuka-Cola Quantum (which already contains nuclear isotopes) and additional nuclear material to brew. When drunk for the first time, it causes hallucinations. Otherwise, it only increases unarmed damage by 100%, reduces the AP cost for sprinting, causes AP to recharge faster, and eventually causes the player to "black out" and wake up in a different part of the map. This only applies to the normal variant, however, since the incredibly rare Sugar-free Nukashine lacks the ensuing hangover effect. Mire Magic Moonshine is Nukashine's raider counterpart, and spiked with acidic gulper venom for an additional kick, which gave the raider gang who originally brewed it severe diarrhea according to the journal entries found around the stills. It's even implied that prolonged consumption of Mire Magic can render a normal human horribly ill as well, since the head of the moonshiners became bedridden after drinking too much of it, where he also died later on. Unlike Nukashine, however, Mire Magic does not result in unconsciousness when consumed.

Bizarrchitecture: Player-made C.A.M.P.s more often than not fall squarely within this trope, due to the wonky geography of Appalachia compared to the infinitely flatter and agreeable terrain of the Commonwealth in build mode. It's not at all uncommon to run around Appalachia and see enormous, gravity-defying megastructures hovering dozens of feet above ground and connected to it merely by a tiny fleet of stairs, especially since erecting that large of a building at ground level will also open your house up for uninvited guests to attack. There's also the issue of the building system being so obnoxiously hard to use that it's far easier to make a structure that defies the laws of physics than it is to build one that obeys them.

Driven to Suicide: Underneath Vault-Tec University is a simulation vault where Overseers-in-Training must undergo a four week simulation where they test out an experiment. If the Overseer requests outside assistance for any reason, then the experiment fails and they fail with it. Right before the bombs dropped, an Overseer was conducting a test with a type of food paste, but soon learned that a person died of a heart attack from it. Upon learning that the dwellers had been eating the regular food supply because they hated the paste, the overseer asked for assistance but never got any because the bombs fell and there was nobody left. Eventually, he backed himself into his room and ate rat poison to end it all. Worse still, the University's dean deliberately sabotaged the experiment to see what would happen if people started dying by modifying the paste so that consuming it would harden arteries leading to fatal heart attacks. Vault-Tec deliberately killed people just to see if it would lead to a revolt or if the Overseer could keep things under control.

It's a given that players may want to kill each other in this game, but the game accounts for this through multiple methods. Players can turn on the "Pacifist" option and opt out of PVP mechanicsnote Pacifist only disables your side of the exchange, meaning that you can't directly pick fights with other players by attacking them, and won't be able to answer their duel challenges, but they can still damage you. Overtly-aggressive players will be assigned "bounties", which other players/groups of players can claim by killing the aggressive player. Furthermore, players below level 5 will be immune to attacks from other players, with or without the Pacifist option.

Godzilla Threshold: More or less the point of the Main Quest. Nuclear weapons are generally treated as a unforgivable evil in the game world with rare exceptions. The Scorched, Scorch Beasts, and Scorched Beast Queen can destroy all of humanity, however. As such, using nuclear weapons to destroy them first is justified.

Depleted Phlebotinum Shells: There are the Prime receiver mods for most guns that convert them to firing depleted Ultracite rounds, which increases their damage output by 25% to any non-Scorched target, and a whopping 60% to Scorched enemies due to the volatile reaction between the shots' composition and the pure Ultracite growing out of their bodies. Even energy weapons like lasernote Not to be confused with the separate Ultracite laser weapons, which use Ultracite crystals as prisms in their beam focusing mechanisms, and do not confer the same damage bonuses and plasma guns can be modified with Prime receivers and benefit from the damage bonus, despite conspicuously not firing physical Ultracite bullets. The caveats to using Prime receivers are that they can only be semi-reliably found on Scorchbeasts and the Scorchbeast Queen, whether as pre-built components or the plans to make them yourself, and Ultracite ammo require the rare flux materials to craft, making them significantly more costly to accumulate in large quantities.

From Bad to Worse: The situation in Appalachia years after the bombs dropped didn't actually seem to be too far off from that of The Commonwealth nearly two centuries later; small settlements, raiders, cults, ghouls, a variety of mutated creatures, and even a Minutemen analogue in the Responders. That all started to change in 2096 when the Responders started finding evidence of a new plague ravaging local towns. The Responders set off to find the source, and disappeared, with those left behind to man their outposts themselves dying. That was in July; by mid-November, everyone else was dead, too. All this coincided with the cult of the Mothman predicting a great flood, and one true believer saying that a great evil would be emerging from deep beneath the earth...

Cap: Vendors of most kinds tend to have a daily cap for trading to prevent players from exploiting the game's economy, such as standard merchants only having a shared global limit of 1,400 caps, and Legendary grinders only outputting a maximum of 500 scrips outside of double weekends. Most forms of currency also have set upper limits to them that the player can carry (e.g. 40,000 for caps, 6,000 (formerly 5,000) for Legendary scrips, etc...), whereupon earning in excess of these thresholds will cause the extra amount to be wasted.

Apocalypse Not: Subverted. Appalachia didn't suffer terribly from the nuclear exchange due to being a strategically unimportant stretch of rural mountains, and its people handled the aftermath fairly well — most notably the Responders, a volunteer disaster relief force comprised of former firefighters, police officers, and medical personnel. Then the Scorchbeasts arrived, and with them a mutagenic pathogen that ravaged the region. By the time Vault 76 opens, the number of uninfected survivors can be counted on one hand, and the entire region is more or less devoid of human life.

Continuity Nod: The "Tales of the West Virginia Hills" holotape program "Who Goes There, Part 1" found in Flatwood talks of a pioneer scout who mentions seeing a bright light flying around in the sky. He remembers his feet feeling weightless before finding himself in a dark room with a little girl named Sally. He was abducted by the Zetan Aliens and ended up meeting a little girl with the same name of Sally. Located in Flatwood is a letter addressed to a "Janet", who was accepted into a vault. The writer of the letter had to decline joining her, as he took a job in Washington D.C. This is likely a reference to Janet Rockwell, one of the inhabitants of Vault 112, who you meet in Tranquility Lane.

Joining a public event or Daily Ops group will make all participants Friendly Fireproof, meaning gunfire, grenades and other explosives thankfully cannot accidentally trigger a friendly fire warning, so throwing a few frags or even shooting a Fat Man into a group of fellow players won't instantly tag you for PvP against all of them, for example.

Unlike its predecessors and their hilariously excessive physics system, most quest or otherwise important items (e.g. holotapes, notes, keys, recipes, etc...) that are placed in the environment cannot be knocked out of position by explosions or other objects bumping into them. This means that you no longer need to gingerly pick off enemies in a room containing an objective that you need to collect, since even firing a mini nuke at the targets inside won't cause it to fly off the tabletop and be lodged into an unreachable location.

Cozy Catastrophe: Averted. The West Virginia Wasteland is the first time that the population of a region was completely and utterly exterminated. Played straight in Vault 76 which seems to have enjoyed the entirety of the nuclear war and its aftermath in style. The worst thing they experienced were fights over trophies and the occasional angry drunk.

Cool House: The Garrahan and Hornwright estates in the southern reaches of the map. Both are massive mansions built on top giant towers that require a keycard to access and contain several floors of various goodies just waiting for someone to come along and find them. The years weren't kind to the inner decor but the infrastructure of the houses seem to have weathered the apocalypse rather well and could give even the Lucky 38 a run for its money in the post apocalyptic luxury department. Just remember to bring a gas mask since both are located in the Ash Heap and watch out for the ghoulified residents and security bots patrolling the grounds.

Nuke 'em: Site Alpha, Site Bravo, and Site Charlie. Three nuclear launch sites scattered all across the land. Resourceful and determined players can acquire launch codes to launch a missile at numerous locations across the map. Anything in the blast zone will be killed instantly. Once the blast has finished, players can scavenge the irradiated blast site afterward... at their own risk. The main storyline of the game focuses around finding the launch codes to destroy the Scorchbeast dens, especially the Queen's at Fissure Site Prime. Nuclear weapons can be launched about three hours at a time during the week before the launch codes are reset for the following week, and the irradiated blast zones will last for a few hours. All players are alerted to the launch and will be told to run for their lives if they happen to be in the targeted area. However, there is an area in the Forest region around Vault 76 that is off-limits to nuking as part of a protected area to prevent griefing of new players that just emerge from the Vault.

Apocalyptic Log: More or less Apocalyptic Log: The Game. Because the game initially launched with no living human NPCs, all of the base game's story and lore had to come from nonliving sources. These incluce audio recordings, notes, terminals, and robots. The vast majority of stories follow individuals who are either killed in the initial outbreak of the Great War or survive it, only to succumb to the Scorched. Which means almost all of these are Downer Ending stories.

Breakable Weapons: Weapon and armor degradation have returned after being left out of Fallout 4, though in a much more streamlined iteration compared to similar mechanics in prior titles, since damaged equipment will continue to operate normally before abruptly breaking upon hitting 0 durability instead of gradually failing to function like in 3 and New Vegas. Various perks exist to reduce the rate of decay and increase the maximum conditions of items you craft repair. There are also luck perks which randomly cause your weapons and armor to repair themselves as they deal/take damage.

Story Breadcrumbs: Before the Wastelanders update, due to the lack of any humans (aside from your fellow players), all quests in the game were given by either robots or environmental details (i.e., holotapes and terminals). One of the first quests you can find is from the Vault 76 Overseer's computer terminal. She left the vault and admittedly doesn't want to be found. After the release of Wastelanders, many of the new quests continued in being delivered by environmental details, but were also supplemented by human NPC dialogue.

The power source requirement for powered armor that was introduced in Fallout 4 returns. It made sense that a game that takes place 10 years after the power sources in pre-war power armors have naturally expired would require makeshift batteries that would power them for about 30 minutes. Temporary Online Content: Comes in a few kinds: Limited-time events (not to be confused with the usual public map events) as well as S.C.O.R.E. seasons offer unique content that are largely unavailable elsewhere after they concluded. While some Seasonal stuff have since made it to the Atomic Shop or been added to specific permanent vendors, the vast majority of the cosmetics and functional items introduced during the original runs have not, thus leaving players who joined late without a means to acquire them. Most Atomic Shop items are likewise only offered for limited periods of time before going away, as indicated by the timestamp on the store card, though many do return on occasion so they largely can't be permanently missed. The recruitment bundles that can be purchased separately every time a new major DLC is released also fall into this category, due to them being permanently retired when the next expansion comes out. Players are typically given a last chance to pick up the bundle items for Atoms a few weeks before they go away for good. Legacy Legendary items are pieces of equipment that possess trait (e.g. Explosive on energy weapons) and modification rolls that can no longer be obtained in current versions of the game due to balancing reasons, but can still be used and traded by those who originally had them.

In a Single Bound: The Marsupial mutation lets you do this with its significant boost to jump height and distance. As long as you don't mind or can counteract the sharp INT drop that can potentially turn you into a bumbling moron, that is. That being said, the increased jump height can sometimes be a double-edged sword, as while Marsupial makes you jump higher, it also doesn't account for the potential falling damage you might take since you will now be dropping to the ground from a much greater height, so things like the Goat Legs perk, power armor, or the Bird Bones mutation pretty much become Required Secondary Powers if you can't manage your landings.

Weapons of Their Trade: As befitting a region known for its industries, many tools of Appalachia's trades can be used as weapons in this game: Axes are one of the more common weapon types to be found in the lush forests of the map. Small hatchets make a return from New Vegas after being absent in 4, multi-purpose woodcutter axes appear also along with fire axes used by members of the Responders. In addition, an industrial saw called the Auto Axe was introduced to the game with the Expeditions: The Pitt update. Similarly, drills and pickaxes can be found throughout Appalachia's various mines, and pitchforks can be found on many of Appalachia's farms. In addition, a shepherd's crook is given to the player during a brahmin-herding quest, and cattleprods become available as weapons after the player completes the Wastelanders questline. This even extends to the series' signature Power Armor, with an Excavator set designed specifically for mining; the left and right arms quadruple all mineral vein yields when worn together, and a full intact set of Excavator armor boosts the player's carry weight by a whopping 100 pounds. One of the game's "Survival Guide" loading screen tips even lampshades this:

Irony: The Overseer found that giving out awards to vault denizens would keep their egos in check. She points out that a "low point" was when someone lost a tooth in a fight over claiming the "Best Dental Hygiene Award". In one log, the Overseer notes that she chose to stay in Appalachia to run Vault 76 instead of going to Vault 101 in Washington, DC because 76 was a control vault, with none of Vault-Tec's usual horrific experiments taking place. Vault 101's experiment turned out to be fairly tame (the study of enforced, indefinite isolation from the surface) and its inhabitants lived fairly comfortable lives, while Vault 76 wound up having to contend with the unexpected and deadly complication of the Scorched Plague.

Large and in Charge: The 3-star legendary level 95 Scorchbeast Queen is significantly larger than other Scorchbeasts. She's the ultimate boss of the game's main story, spawned when a nuke is dropped on Fissure Site Prime. When she does her shockwave attack, it can potentially summon dozens of Scorched and Scorched-infected creatures to draw attention away from her, ranging from weak Mongrels and Rad-rats to deadly Mirelurk Kings and Queens. She is only matched by the Wendigo Colossus introduced in the Wastelanders DLC, who is also a 3-star legendary, but is only level 90. However, it carries an area-of-effect attack that can cause any players caught in range to be temporarily put into a state of uncontrollable panic for a few seconds.

Self-Deprecation: One of the characters that is killed in the E3 2018 gameplay footage in a rather brutal fashion is called PGARVEY, no doubt a nod given by Bethesda to Preston Garvey's reputation as The Scrappy among the community. Bethesda also announced a "Break-it Early Test Application" (a "BETA" test) for before launch, admitting that their game may be buggy: a very common complaint of Bethesda games, almost to the point where the bugs are part of the company's identity. All joking aside, the game itself uses the Creation Engine, which despite numerous improvements over its predecessor (Gamebryo), is still notorious for being unstable and buggy.

Taking You with Me
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_caf89e54

Taking You with Me: As a holdover from 4, several kinds of robotic enemies can blow up on death and take an unwary player with them. Sentry bots in particular are especially guilty of this, due to them appearing to be inert for a few seconds after dying, only to then explode with the force of a mini nuke shot that will most definitely one-shot anyone close enough to them at the time. Floaters of all three variants will explode on death and do significant, if not fatal, damage to players who aren't wise enough to book it out of there when the things started swelling when depleted of health. If the explosions failed to kill an inattentive player, then their resulting area damage most definitely will. You can do this yourself by equipping the Last Laugh perk card, which has a chance to drop a live grenade from your inventory when you're incapacitated. Of course, this grenade has a pretty good chance of killing you as well depending on where it rolled to, but hopefully you'll have managed to take whatever killed you with you in the explosion, or at the very least hurt it badly enough that you can finish it off after respawning. Back when Nuclear Winter was still playable, that mode's variant of Last Laugh had a 100% grenade chance.

Horror Hunger: This is the observed side effect of the Carnivore mutation on the Enclave's test subjects, whose metabolism completely disregarded the presence of vegetables and fruit, but developed an extreme craving for flesh, raw or cooked, that allowed them to sense meat being prepared at the other end of the compound. The mutation serum trials came to an abrupt end when the subjects started finding the researchers "tasty". It's not revealed what happened to these subjects, and you yourself are fortunate enough to not be affected by this craving in actual gameplay.

Taken for Granite: The Scorched infection is a very slow version of this. As the virus progress, the victims suddenly stop in one place. Break Out the Museum Piece: An extreme example, given the circumstances. This includes an MG42, black powder guns, and a Single Action Army, which would have been outdated in present day, never mind one century and one apocalypse into the future. This isn't new, of course, with New Vegas having an M1 Garand and earlier games having more modern weaponry that was slowly phased out by more fictional examples, and that's obviously not counting mods. Slightly averted with the M2, however, as the weapon's still in production today. Also, given its use of .308 (7.62 NATO) it's likely that the MG42 is actually an MG3, a modern version of the gun also still produced today. One available weapon is a hand-cranked, Schizo Tech Gatling-gun.

Anti-Frustration Features
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_d6f284a3
comment
Anti-Frustration Features: It's a given that players may want to kill each other in this game, but the game accounts for this through multiple methods. All players will always be visible on the world map, so you can prepare accordingly if you know an aggressive player is heading your way. Players will not be able to build structures until some distance well beyond Vault 76 in order to prevent Griefing to new players. In the event that two different players build their C.A.M.P. in the same spot, which is reasonably common since certain areas are preferred for various reasons — access to water, lack of enemies, resources, etc. — the second player who joins the server will have their structures automatically converted into blueprints that they can instantly rebuild elsewhere. You'll be given the choice of hopping to a different server in hopes of finding one in which the designated build area is clear, or a one-time pass to move your C.A.M.P. somewhere else at no charge. As long as you make a blueprint of the structures you build in a camp, you can easily deconstruct them and set them back up in other areas. The developers pointed out that this was quite common among the internal testers. All crafting stations are connected to your stash, allowing you to modify your gear at any station without having to lug your gear. Every Red Rocket station and Train station has a cloud based container for you to store your gear so you don't have to haul everything back to your C.A.M.P. There is both a team-chat and local area voice chat to communicate with your party and other players. Any crafting bench (minus cooking and brewing) allows you to scrap the junk you're carrying into their base components, saving weight. However, certain items needed as is for crafting, like baseballs for baseball grenades or beer bottles for Molotov cocktails, won't get auto-scrapped. Once you get your hands on a suit of power armor, it's yours forever: gone are the days from Fallout 4 where you have to worry about random people climbing into your vacant armor and walking away. If you leave your chassis vacant for a few minutes, it will be returned to your inventory automatically and can be redeployed at your leisure. In addition, because the armor is some of the heaviest equipment in the game, the game only counts the chassis against your carry weight, regardless of what the armor equipped to it actually weighs. You cannot launch nukes into the region surrounding Vault 76. As such, new players never have to worry about emerging from the Vault only to end up in the middle of a lethally-irradiated legendary-monster-infested Blast Zone. Fast-traveling will now work indoors, and even when the player is surrounded by enemies, though in the latter case there will be a short countdown before they will be teleported away, and taking damage of any form will cancel the travel prompt. Although the specific power armor parts are level-gated, the chassis itself is not. This lets a lower-level player commandeer a frame in a pinch by unequipping the pre-placed parts and still benefit from the increased resistances and carry weight it provides. Dying and then respawning will always remove some of your rads if you happen to be irradiated, and for at least ten seconds after respawning, you cannot accumulate more radiation. This gives high-rad players a better chance at escaping whatever caused their death, especially if they happened to croak inside of blast zones or other irradiated areas, though those running builds centered around the Bloodied Legendary effect may not appreciate having to re-rad themselves and having an even harder time doing it every time they die. Before it was taken offline, Nuclear Winter was the only mode that doesn't let you wear clothes over your armor, to make it easier for other players to know what you're equipped with.

Call-Forward: The game contains a surprising number of similarities with the Lonesome Road DLC for Fallout: New Vegas. Both works have a race of half-Feral Ghouls that can use weapons (the Scorched and the Marked Men), a dangerous species that makes their lairs underground and will potentially spell doom to the entire surface when they arise (the Scorchbeasts and the Tunnelers), and active nuclear missiles that can be launched as part of the main story. One of the Overseer's holotapes says that she was offered the Overseer position in Vault 101, but declined in order to stay in West Virginia because a) she wanted to help "her people" and b), the promise that Vault 76 would be a control vault. Finally, she wanted to stay with her fiance, Evan, and Vault 101 would've required leaving him behind. The FEV vat room within the West Tek Research Center is almost the spitting image of the ones found in The Master's lair (seen during the "dipping" ending) in the first Fallout. Fortunately, the virus culture is inert and won't turn you into a Super Mutant if you fall into it, and can even be collected and drunk like normal water, though it doesn't serve any practical purpose other than giving you a lot of radiation. Reading a terminal at the Riverside Manor reveals it was home to Shannon Rivers, the voice actress for the The Mistress of Mystery in the Silver Shroud radio plays. Her fan letter section has a fan letter from none other than Kent Connolly, who complains about a Continuity Snarl that occurred in one season of the show. In the Whitespring Bunker, you can find the record of a communication between MODUS and the ZAX computer of Raven Rock, whose inquiries portray an odd fascination with biographies of famous Presidents, chief of which is Abraham Lincoln. Three guesses what would become of it a hundred and fifty years later, and the first two don't count. In Vault 51, you can find an archived message that, unlike the other requests, succeeded in getting a suit of Prototype Enclave Hellfire Armor sent to Vault 51. The person that was able to successfully request it? Dr. Stanislaus Braun (or rather, the ZAX computer that was able to imitate his writing mannerisms to a 99.6% accuracy)! One of the paintjobs you can find for your power armor is a red and black paint scheme called Outcast Paint, referencing the Brotherhood Outcasts in Fallout 3.

 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_e9f517e1
comment
Artistic License – Geography: The game's version of West Virginia is almost The Theme Park Version in terms of geography, going beyond the usual Space Compression of a video game. Lewisburg, Grafton, Clarksburg, Flatwoods, Helvetia, Summersville, and "Morgantown" have all moved about 50 miles west. "Morgantown" is located roughly where the town of Buckhannon should be, east of Flatwoods. The real Morgantown is a ways north of Grafton. Monongah has moved about 50 miles southwest. In real life it's just north of Clarksburg. Summersville's relocation means it nearly collides with Charleston. Its real-life location contains Huntersville, which itself is supposed to be east of Watoga. And lastly, the interstate numbers are wrong.

No Ending: Defeating the Scorchbeast Queen and sealing up a den is the primary purpose of the game. The game's open-ended nature means there aren't any cutscenes to tell the aftermath of the event, as the game just continues on.

Big Creepy-Crawlies: Radroaches, ants, radscorpions, bloatflies, and bloodbugs make a return from previous games. New to the series are the addition of giant ticks roughly the size of a small dog, giant queen Wasps called Honeybeasts with their hives built into their abdomen and mandibles large enough to split a person in half, Cave Crickets with sickle-like claws, and West Virginia's own local cryptids, the Mothmen.

Downloadable Content: The Atomic Shop contains a lot of cosmetic elements you can purchase like emotes, vampire costumes, and more. Very few items have any practical value, and none of them possess any functionality the in-game variants lack. However, recently the shop has started carrying items that do affect the game world, such as repair kits for weapons and junk stashes. These aren't strictly necessary, as most players will be swimming in materials by mid-game. The addition of these in-game items purchasable by real money was the subject of many discussions.

Critical Status Buff
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_ef8ee709
comment
Critical Status Buff: The Bloodied and Unyielding Legendary effects from 4 make a comeback in this game, and there are several more buffs that can supplement a low-health build even further, such as the Adrenal Reaction mutation or Radicool perk, the former of which massively increases your gun damage the lower your HP is, and the former gives you more STR the more irradiated you are, so with this kind of build, the player would be an absolute damage monster when they are within an inch of their lifenote For those wondering at home, the bonus damage from Bloodied caps out at 5% of your health remaining. When built right, one can reduce even Deathclaws to chunky salsa just by looking at them a bit funny, but god help you if your enemy manages to get a good hit in, since as a Glass Cannon you will definitely feel it.

Mundane Utility: Nukes are meant to seal Scorchbeast hives for the good of Appalachia. From a meta perspective, they are useful for creating an irradiated hellhole that produces lots of high-level creatures for grinding, as well as supplies of flux to craft into some of the game's most powerful items. Whitespring was an especially popular target, since it's already infested with ghouls, until they nerfed the spawnrate of legendary Ghouls.

Arbitrary Headcount Limit: Zig-zagged. Play groups are limited to four players at any given time for no discernible reason, though public events are free for all to join, and in fact often highly encourage large crowds to join in on the fun. Certain specific events were even designed to accommodate several groups of four at once, such as Eviction Notice or Scorched Earth, due to their significantly higher difficulty compared to the smaller-scale ones.

Dog Food Diet: Canned dog food is a consumable item, and the game encourages you to use it as a staple of your diet. Video Game Cruelty Punishment
 Fallout 76 (Video Game) / int_fcd993bd
comment
Video Game Cruelty Punishment: You can kill any player who are at least level 6, but your first few attacks will do very little damage: the point of these attacks is to inform your target that you wish to fight them. If they refuse and don't fight back, you can still kill them, but this earns you nothing. Not only that, but you are also marked as a "wanted murderer" on the map for everyone in the server to see. "Wanted Murderers" will receive full damage from other players (even their own teammates) as if they're actively participating in PvP, and will not be able to see anyone else on the map. This means they will never see their own punishments coming. If someone kills you after that, they earn a bounty of caps paid out of your own pocket, and should you be unable to cover this bounty for some reason, you will then be slapped with a 50% damage penalty against other players for the next four hours that cannot be dodged by server-hopping, on top of the aforementioned damage reduction. In other words, running around killing helpless noobs for fun is generally a bad idea. This also applies to damaging or breaking into another player's property. Even something as simple as picking a lock on a player-installed door earns you a bounty. If you treated Jen badly during Invisible Ties and killed her mother, she will take a part of the gold you find in the Vault 79 raid and call you out on being an asshole.

Tree Top Town: The Mire has two of them: Tanagra Town is essentially a giant clod of rock, dirt and junk that's been ripped from the ground and lifted into the air by huge vines with a giant metal face like the one at the bottom of Dunwich Borers in a cave in the center. Treehouse Village was built by the Free States to avoid the swamp and creeping strangler vines in the region. It consists of a series of treehouses interconnected by bridges, keeping the residents close to each other but also allowing them privacy. The settlement was later overrun by raiders and remained empty for many years until a group of villagers led by Jennie Brown resettled the village, renaming it The Retreat.
