The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, also known simply as Man of Medan, is an Adventure Game slash Survival Horror developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is the first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology, a series of horror games that share a framing device but which are otherwise standalone. It was released on August 30th, 2019 for PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4.The story focuses on a group of American adventurers traveling to the South Pacific in search of the wreck of a B-29 Superfortress that crashed just after the end of World War II's War in Asia and the Pacific. While successful in locating the wrecked plane at the bottom of the seabed, they soon end up dealing with supernatural forces onboard a Ghost Ship dating from the same time period. In addition, the group comes under threat from Ruthless Modern Pirates along the way.The game is followed by Little Hope, which was released worldwide October 30, 2020.

The game will make note of any weapons you pick up. The kitchen knife Alex finds can end up taking the life of Brad, Fliss, Julia or Alex himself if you're not careful. Brad and Fliss can also find weapons while exploring the ship alone, which can result in them killing each other if they hallucinate and see each other as monsters.

Among the three, Junior has at least a vague understanding of the strange phenomena and can pull a Heel–Face Turn if you can help him calm down.

Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After the prologue, the game introduces the Curator who then serves as the host or guide, telling the proper story as if it is written in a book, while the player themselves is presented in the first-person perspective, listening to him. Major shifts to the story will then bring the player back to the Curator, who comments on the player's progression, while giving them advice on the way like an Exposition Fairy. The Curator tells you early on to look for pictures for clues, as this is actually a gameplay mechanic made as the Hint System. When the first horrific encounter happens, the Curator muses that things have seemingly gone for the "supernatural". Like the totems from Until Dawn, the players can have characters stare at pictures of ships in distress to get hints on possible outcomes. Unlike that game where the characters don't comment on them, Fliss will question "Why do I even have this?" after the player gets a tip.

Downer Ending: There are multiple ways for a player to get a Downer Ending, the most obvious way is all protagonist dies by the end of the story. Another one happens if Conrad failed to escape on the speedboat, the military was never called, and the distributor cap was destroyed. With the Duke of Milan unable to run, and having no other lifelines through Conrad or the military, the surviving group is left stranded on the Ourang Medan. Alex (if alive) volunteers to go back inside of the ship, in the hopes of finding canned food. Fliss, on the other hand, thinks there is a better chance of survival by hopping back aboard the Duke and rowing out to sea, hoping to catch a current to land. Depending on Alex's and Fliss's respective relationship with the remaining survivors, the group will split up and pray for each other's safety. However, both plans end up failing. The group that left with Fliss will be shown on the Duke, tired, sick and sunburnt as the camera pans out to show the boat drifting on a seemingly endless ocean. The group that stayed with Alex will be shown inside the Ourang Medan screaming as they slowly become delirious from the effects of the Manchurian Gold. Another one happens if Conrad fails to escape on the speed boat, the distributor cap is destroyed, and the group called for help from the military, but also told them the name of the ship they were stranded on. The remaining survivors see a military helicopter coming towards them. They wave it down and it lands on the ship's weather deck. They all excitedly run over to it, thinking that they have been rescued. But the soldiers exit the helicopter with weapons drawn and aimed at the survivors. After only few seconds for the group to question what is going on, the soldiers open fire. This happened because of what the Ourang Medan was carrying and because the contents were top secret, they killed the surviving group on sight for potentially knowing too much.

Glamour: The ghost of the blonde white woman, if Conrad didn't escape, initially looks stunning, but at the last second, she reveals her true form of being a ghoulish, disheveled hag. She is actually Fliss (or Brad if Fliss already died), but Conrad is hallucinating. From the latest trailer, it becomes pretty apparent that the "ballroom" shown is nothing more than a spectacular illusion cast by the malevolent spirits there (revealed to be hallucinations induced by a leaked chemical weapon), as the ship the game is set in is a troop transport, not a luxury liner. As such, when the illusion fades, it's revealed to be a cargo hold full of trucks, weapon and ammunition crates, and the corpses of dead US servicemen.

Foreshadowing: Quite a bit about what's truly going on aboard the ship. During the 1940's prologue, lightning strikes the ship and travels down to several wooden crates, which start leaking some sort of fog. This is the chemical weapon known as Manchurian Gold. The theme song being more digital and metal compared to Until Dawn's opera sounding one isn't just artistic. It's a hint that everything is much more man made and artificial, including the supernatural elements. At a certain point, it becomes clear that some of the characters are seeing things that the others aren't. A notable scene that highlights this revelation occurs when the pirate Junior rambles about a "mist" that makes him agitated about seeing monsters or "people turning". This is because they're all hallucinating under the effects of Manchurian Gold. Many of the dead soldiers and servicemen on the ship have no obvious wounds, and some even look like they were literally scared to death. This is because of the terrifying hallucinations induced by Manchurian Gold. Towards the end of the game, you can find a dead soldier wearing a gas mask and carrying instructions about what to do in the event of a gas leak. After Fliss discovers the Manchurian Gold and the "ballroom" turns into the cargo hold, the "spell book" that was there turns into a book on handling biological agents.

Only a Flesh Wound: If Conrad fails to escape on the motor boat and pushes his captors too far, it can result in one of the kidnappers shooting Julia in the head, leaving her crumpled and bleeding on the floor of the boat. Unusually for this game, though, it doesn't prove fatal - by the next scene she's regained consciousness and is being bandaged up by Alex, who explains that the bullet merely grazed her. All things considered, she seems remarkably fine. Conrad can also get shot in the leg if he messes up negotiations with the pirates. Unlike Julia's head injury, this one is acknowledged by the game a few times and seems like it's going to have dire consequences... until the game just forgets about it and he can have entire chase sequences without so much as a limp.
