Naughty Bear is a 2010 action game developed by Artificial Mind & Movement (later known as Behavior Interactive) and published by 505 Games for the Xbox 360 and Play Station 3. The game tells a story about Naughty Bear, a teddy bear who is very naughty. There's a birthday party on the Island of Perfection, and Naughty is not invited. Upset by this, he decides to exact revenge on everyone on the island by scaring the fluff out of them and/or killing them. This game features many ways to dispatch your fellow teddy brethren. To earn "Naughty points," you perform various naughty actions, such as sabotaging powerboxes, destroying the environment, and scaring the locals. The objective of the game is to cause as much chaos as possible, increasing the score multiplier. The game was later given a sequel in 2012 titled Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise, taking place on an island resort but still having the same basic premise. In October 31, 2023, Behavior Interactive would reference their roots by adding Naughty Bear to Dead by Daylight as a Visceral Legendary outfit for the Trapper (even featuring the Narrator). Watch the trailer for the cosmetic here.

Taking Over the Town: A one-teddy version; by sinking the boat, disabling the car and phones and setting up traps at the dock that the police use, Naughty can effectively prevent anyone from escaping and immediately lock down any reinforcements at the dock.

Darker and Edgier: Subverted somewhat. While it's still just as violent as the first game, it doesn't even try to mask itself as a happy, stuffed animal quest at the beginning of the game. Unless a title screen with creepy music, a green bear with a hole in his chest and a missing arm, and an interactive double-barrel shotgun with the phrase "A good bear is a dead bear" is a happy game in your eyes.

Even Evil Has Standards

comment
Even Evil Has Standards: Both the Narrator and Naughty show shades of this. Fluffy's decision to use Zero-Point Quantum Grid Resonators to power the Robo-Bears' Superbrain in episode 6 (which would likely create a universe-ending quantum rift) is enough to horrify even the Narrator, though it's implied this is more out of pragmatic self-preservation than moral concerns. The bears' Kick the Dog moment at the end after Naughty went out of his way to save them all from the invading alien-bears audibly disgusts the Narrator, and he seems legitimately concerned for Naughty's emotional state after they cruelly reject him yet again. The Vampiricorn feeding on the fluff of a Unibear is condemned by the otherwise gleefully murderous narrator as "monstrous", who sounds legitimately disgusted or horrified at the sight. Naughty reacts similarly, covering his eyes at the sight and reacting with visible horror to the Narrator's description of it.

Disproportionate Retribution: Naughty goes on a killing spree because he wasn't invited to a birthday party and two other bears laughed at the gift he had made. According to the website, Naughty's history of rejection goes back farther than that. He acted selfishly even before the events of the game, which explains why the other bears don't really like Naughty. The Wiki implies that Naughty was simply a naughty, prank-pulling bear who was nonetheless harmless. And then the other bears started treating him like crap.

Nightmare Sequence: The Ring trailer features Naughty recreating the iconic "crawling out of the television" scene, scaring a sleeping Giggles into waking up. The Jaws trailer features a massive Naughty attacking a boat with Daddles and Trembles on it, with Naughty brutally biting Daddles to death before dragging him into the water as he retreats; cut to Daddles jerking awake, then breathing a sigh of relief as he realises it was All Just a Dream. And then cue the real Naughty exploding out of the water behind him and dragging Daddles to an unknown, but presumably grisly fate. Reaching 100% Completion unlocks a sequence in which Naughty seemingly suffers from one, dreaming that he's a Unibear having his horn cut off by Daddles. Dream-Naughty abruptly awakes and begins to advance on a suddenly-fearful Daddles, only for him to trip and awake in the real world as regular Naughty. Confused, Naughty looks down to the floor, revealing he was Sleepwalking and tripped over a saw on the floor before he slowly raises a hand to his head.

Challenge Run: Beating the main "story" level unlocks four "challenge" versions of it, which you can then beat to unlock new costumes and reach 100% Completion. Killer Challenge: Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Every bear on the level has to die, not just the episode villain, and no-one can be allowed to escape. If the bears manage to call for help, the poor schmucks answering their call have to die as well. Friendly Challenge: Don't fight them! You're not allowed to strike, shoot, or Set a Mook to Kill a Mook — doing so means an instant loss. However, traps, super-scaring an insane bear into suicide, or ultra-killing a bear wounded by a trap are all fine. Insanity Challenge: Drive them all mad! Killing a bear who hasn't gone insane is an instant failure, as is letting non-insane bears kill each other, but once they're insane it's open season on the poor, deranged sods. Untouchable Challenge: Naughty's health is limited to the absolute minimum, turning all attacks into One Hit Kills. Other than that, the level plays as normal. Better be good at dodging! Invisible Challenge: Don't be seen doing naughty deeds. If you get spotted five times, it's an instant Game Over, so pack your best costume and sabotage everything you can get your hands on. Speed Run Challenge: Complete the main level's objectives while on a time limit. Fast costumes and frozen multiplier bars are your greatest friends here, as they'll let you hit the score needed to open the next area quicker. Top Hat Challenge: All the bears have beefed-up health and wield powerful guns rather than their usual weapons, as well as sporting rather stylish top hats. Your goal is to find the story mode antagonist (identified by a snazzier, unique top hat) and kill them. The aptly-named "Challenge Challenges" achievements require you to complete the above challenge levels in specific ways, like never being seen once in an Invisible Challenge or completing an Untouchable Challenge with no weapon.

Bait-and-Switch: A two-fold example during the ending. The bears seem to be throwing a party to celebrate Naughty beating back the Alien invasion and have seemingly accepted him for once, but then they smash the cake into his face and run him off, laughing at him all the way. Following this Kick the Dog moment, Naughty is shown from the back, seemingly crying to himself in the woods as the Narrator gently asks if he's alright; Naughty promptly turns around, revealing that he's been loading a RPG-7 and is aiming it at the cabin where the bears are. Episode 8 opens with one - Naughty is seemingly invited to a party, only for it to turn out the bears are luring him into a trap with the X-Bears waiting to take him down. The intro to the Friendly Challenge features a bear blowing a raspberry in Naughty's face, with Naughty visibly becoming more and more angry (complete with a kettle whistling) until he hits the Rage Breaking Point and draws back a fist to punch the bear. Instead of doing so, however, he simply grabs the bear and drags them over to the toilet to drown them.

Asshole Victim: The other bears vary from being petty and unpleasant dog-kickers (Daddles, Giggles, most of the bears) to outright villains (Episode 6 Fluffy, Episode 10 Stardust), so it's pretty hard to feel bad for them when Naughty goes on a rampage. After the bears Kick the Dog one time too many in the ending sequence, Naughty responds by launching an RPG into their cabin (killing everyone again) before returning to his hut. The Vampiricorn is a monstrous Vampire Monarch in charge of a large coven of fluff-sucking monsters, who makes his entrance by casually murdering a Unibear and drinking its fluff, something that horrifies even the otherwise gleefully Ax-Crazy Narrator. Suffice to say, no tears are shed when Naughty puts him down for good.

Death by Irony: The target will usually be killed like this. Chubby is on Paradise Island for a "fluffosuctomy" procedure to reduce his weight; Naughty kills him by draining all the fluff from his body through the weight-reducing machine, leaving him a weightless, shrunken shell. Fluffy has slipped back into his Mad Scientist phase and is trying to find a way to teleport; Naughty kills him by throwing Fluffy into a portal opened by the teleporter. Nibbles, the cook of the island, gets thrown into a cookie-making machine that turns him into a cookie (which Naughty promptly crumbles). Trembles, the oil baron, gets force-fed a can of his own signature crude oil then set alight by Naughty.

Too Dumb to Live: OK, Daddles. You go out of your way to humiliate, embarrass, and do other nasty and vicious things to Naughty Bear despite the painfully obvious fact that he has a breaking point. He gets what he deserves when he finally snaps. Same goes to the other bears, who are complete dicks to him for little reason. Makes what happens next slightly understandable. "Oh no! Naughty's gone berserk and is murdering everyone on the island! Let me fix this broken telephone right out here in the open!" In the ending, the other bears invite Naughty to a celebration. As soon as he gets there, they smash a cake into his face and laugh at him, without trying to kill him or anything. No surprises as to what happens next.

Neck Snap: The Bear Trap's ultra-kill involves Naughty seizing the trapped bear in a headlock from behind, then snapping their neck with his bare hands. Alternatively, if killing a bear helping another out of the trap, Naughty places a foot on the bear's back to keep them in place then wrenches their head back, breaking the victim's neck. Closet Elimination also features this, with Naughty dragging his victim out of the closet and then pressing down on their neck with his foot until it breaks.

Boom, Headshot!: The pistol executions involve this: With the standard revolver, Naughty simply kicks the target to the ground then shoots them in the face with one bullet from the revolver as they rise onto their knees. With the silenced pistol, Naughty kneecaps his victim to prevent them from fleeing, then walks forward and places the muzzle to their jaw before firing one bullet into the bear's head.

Non-Standard Character Design: Naughty is the only one of the bears with a scar and brown fur; the others all have various colours of fur and no scars at all. The Alien-Bears all lack fur of any kind, instead having a smooth, greenish-yellow 'skin' and much larger, pitch-black eyes. They also leak a yellowish foamy substance rather than regular fluff. This is presumably to play up their alien appearance next to the regular bears.

Unexpected Kindness: At the end of the game after Naughty has saved the island from the aliens, the bears who usually mistreat him hold a ceremony for him, and the narrator notes that this is quite a surprise. Naughty appears to be surprised and touched by this. Video Game Cruelty Potential: The game actively encourages doing horrible things to the bears so you can wring the most points out of them, with an entire section of the in-game guide dedicated to this strategy (referred to as "stressing the meat"). While it's not necessarily required for most levels, you will need to do this if you want to get the higher scores. This is practically enforced by the Insanity Challenge — the only way to proceed is to torment every bear on the level until they go insane, as killing any of them before they go mad is an immediate failure. Push bears past insanity, and they kill themselves - which gives you a massive point bonus, particularly if they kill themselves in front of other bears. One of the easiest ways to get a platinum ranking in a level is to drive literally every bear in the area to suicide.
