Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is a Power Rangers Fighting Game developed by nWaynote the same team behind Power Rangers: Legacy Wars using the Unity engine. It was released on PlayStation 4 on April 2 2019 in the US and March 28 2019 in Europe, for Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on March 26 2019 and for PC via Steam on September 24, 2019. On May 25, 2021, a "Super Edition" of the game was released, containing all of the DLC Characters and Skins from the first three packs, along with the original game's content. Here's the game's site.It has significantly different gameplay from Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, appearing more like a traditional fighting game (albeit with more accessible controls). Fights are conducted as 3-vs.-3 Tag Team battles, akin to the Marvel vs. Capcom later entries. Its roster pulls characters from throughout the franchise's history, including the Boom! Studios comic book.Also worth noting is that Battle for the Grid is the second Power Rangers game to receive a Teen rating from the ESRB. The first was Power Rangers: Super Samurai for Xbox 360. | |

Mythology Gag: Green Ranger's P2 skin is based off of his look in the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers episode "Mighty Morphin' Mutants". Dragon Armor Trini's P2 skin gives it Dragonzord colors, a nod to Black Dragon's original form as the Dragonzord. The achievement names are replete with allusions to various series' theme songs: "Protectors of [the] Right", "Defenders Sworn to Fight", "Defend What's Right Forever", "Protect This World Together", "Powered Up for More", "Rangers at the Core", "Fired Up for More", "Even Up the Score", "Stronger than Before", "Rangers Forever", and "We Stand Together". In a non-theme song example, completing Jason (the Red Ranger)'s story mode nets you the achievement "Forever Red". Ranger Slayer's victory quote "You know what they say: too much pink power is dangerous." is a nod to the Mighty Morphin' second season episode "Wild West Rangers", where the Zordon of the late 19th century warns against activating a concurrent Pink Ranger while Kim was there because too much of the same energy was dangerous. One of Quantum Ranger's special moves is named "Time Fire", an obvious nod to his Japanese counterpart from Mirai Sentai Timeranger. A guy named Ryu becoming a Red Ranger with hawk theming? That sounds pretty familiar.... Ryu's intro quote is a reference to his originally mistranslated victory quote from Street Fighter II: "You must defeat my Shoryuken to stand a chance!"note In the original game, "Shoryuken" was mistranslated as "Sheng Long". Many of Ryu and Chun-Li's animations are direct copies of those taken from both Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Street Fighter V. Speaking of Quantum Ranger, several of his quotes are obvious references to Vergil. Given that Dan Southworth voices both characters, it makes sense. Expy: Since the game was developed by Marvel vs. Capcom players, several of the characters play a lot like MvC. For example, the Quantum Ranger plays like a mix of Cable and Vergil (the latter being an Actor Allusion) while Dai Shi is like a mix of Black Panther and Akuma, with a dash of Wesker for his super, and Evil Ryu/Kage for his axe kick. For very obvious reasons, Ryu and Chun-Li take a lot of inspiration from their time spent there for their appearances here; to just highlight them even further, the button usually reserved for performing a character's special is replaced with a launcher, replicating the control scheme of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 entirely for them. | |
