Valkyria Chronicles 4, known in the Japanese market as Valkyria of the Battlefield 4: Eastern Front, is the fourth game of the Valkyria Chronicles series. It was released in Japan on March 21st, 2018 for the Play Station 4, with a worldwide release on September 25th, 2018 that also included the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC platforms. This game marks the return of the series to mainstream consoles (not counting the spinoff Valkyria Revolution), and is set in the same timeline as the first Valkyria Chronicles game.The game returns to the events of the Second Europan War of EC 1935, which focuses on the Atlantic Federation, the major power fighting against the East Europan Imperial Alliance, as the two vie for dominance of the Europan continent in their quest to secure Ragnite, a strategically important resource. Three months into the war, the Federation begins losing ground against the Empire's might, forcing them to enact Operation Northern Cross, a desperate gambit to end the war by raiding the Imperial capital.Joining the offensive is Claude Wallace, a tank commander in the Atlantic Federation's Edinburgh Army 101st Division Platoon E, who fights to end the war and take back his homeland. Together with his comrades in Platoon E including his estranged childhood friend Riley Miller, prodigy sharpshooter Kai Schulen, and the hot-blooded Darcsen Raz, they undertake a campaign that will take them across the frozen north as they fight against the numerically superior Empire. Does This Remind You of Anything?: Operation Northern Cross was an attempt by the Federation to march directly into the heartland of the Empire and dictate peace at the latter's capital of Schwartzgrad. This was to be accomplished before the onset of winter. Unfortunately, winter came early in October and doomed any chances for Federation success. note This is also what happened in the real life Operation Barbarossa. Winter came early in October, and bad weather significantly hindered the German Wehrmacht's progress. Moreover, most of the fighting occurs in what the Federation designates as the 'Eastern Front'; the Empire calls the conflict 'Great Patriotic War'. However, this is downplayed somewhat in the official English localization, as the Federation refers to the area as the 'Eastern Theater' and the Empire calls the conflict the 'War for the Motherland'. Operation Northern Cross also bears very heavy resemblance to the real-life abortive Operation Market Garden, the plan (thought up by Bernard Law Montgomery himself no less) to take Germany's Ruhr Valley and cut the Third Reich off from its remaining industrial might. Both plans are very similar on several points: Both were joint operations which involved supporting a large armored formation making a straight, deep-cutting push into enemy territory with the intention of seizing a vital strategic area before the enemy could properly respond, both promised to end the war before the winter months, and both operations failed due to a combination of insuperable logistics, bad (or ignored) intelligence, and the unexpected presence of elite enemy forces that resulted in the main elements of the operation being cut off from each other and routed. Most notably, the Minute and Hafen tanks which make up the bulk of the Federation's armored forces resemble the American/British Sherman and Firefly tanks, respectively, both of which were primary tanks used in Market Garden by the British XXX Corps, which was the aforementioned "armored formation" to be supported by infantry. The Federation main battle tank is known as the Minute/Minutemen, a Vinland design. This is in reference to the speed of its production as well as to commemorate the militia who fought the War of Independence, which led to the founding of the United States of Vinland. The scene of a friendly Imperial civilian lynched by Imperial soldiers recalls tactics employed by hardcore Nazis in the last year of World War II. This practice has still not completely died out - the last recorded attempt was made in 2016 in the aftermath of a failed revolt in Turkey. There is a resistance force within the Empire made up of Imperial citizens known as the Blue Rose. This is based off of the real life White Rose, which was an anti-Nazi resistance group based in Germany mostly made up of students. The presence of foreigners willing to serve in the Edinburgian military is a reminder on how Americans have fought with the Allies in the two World Wars despite America having a neutral stance at first. It's also a reminder on how the French and Spanish Foreign Legions continue to operate even today with foreigners in the rank and file. The fact that ragnite implosion technology and Valkyria bombs are perfected by Riley and scientists in Vinland is a a clear parallel to the US' development of nuclear technology and weaponry during World War II, which are being helped along by several scientist from other countries working for them. Azusa's last personnel entry also hints to a possible Pacific Theater-style war between her homeland and Vinland. | |

The boss fight against the Lophius in Chapter 18 is meant to have the player slowly destroying each of its radiators one by one, taking multiple turns to do so as it retracts the intact ones after one has been destroyed. However, if the player can bust all of them at once, then the battle immediately ends in victory. Despite being important for the mission objective, Riley is often the best squad member to pull this off, preferably with an Elias-series launcher and a few Demolish/Penetrate/Blast Boost orders stacked on her. You can do a slightly modified version of this tactic in the Hard version of this mission, only with one of your other Grenadiers, since in the Hard version, you have to move Riley to her spot. | |

Boring, but Practical: Some of the standard weapons used for units are preferred over the unique/special weapons the players can earn in certain missions. For Scouts & Engineers, players often resort to equipping all of them with the Brown Rifle. It has only average accuracy with no added effects, but it’s also the only rifle in the game that fires seven shots instead of five when leveled up, and it has more damage-per-shot than most other rifles, including unique weapons; meaning that it does the most overall damage. And while it is technically more inaccurate than other standard rifles, this drawback is minuscule compared to the immediately more-powerful unique enemy rifles, (it maxes out at a “B� accuracy rating whereas unique guns rarely get above a “D�). Once the Brown Rifle gets its 7 shots, players ditch their unique guns for it. For Lancers, most players choose the SB9 model as their default lance for a good portion of the game. It's actually one of the weaker lances the player can equip to units in-game. However, it has the best accuracy out of all anti-tank lances. Other lances may be more powerful but they struggle to hit the broadside-of-a-barn, even at point-blank range, thus wasting ammo and unit-actions. The SB9 is simply more likely to actually hit where its pointed at, thereby saving lancers' limited ammo capacity; plus most lancers are used to hit enemy tanks at their ragnite-engine rears for a One-Hit Kill, which even the SB9 can still do for nearly every tank in the game. The Cactus Armored Personnel Carrier (APC). It has two main advantages over the other tanks in the game: it is extremely mobile, and (being an APC) it can carry units across the battlefield safely from harm. The only drawbacks it has are that it has no anti-tank weapons and has less protection than the Hafen or even the Glory tanks. But it more than makes up for it since it can carry the largely slow lancers & grenadiers over greater distances than if they walked, which nullifies the former drawback. And finally, the Cactus, when controlled, can easily pick up units without expending a turn or action. Even when the players get access to the Glory or even the Edelweiss via DLC, they choose to rely on the APC in most battles as their secondary vehicle (after the typically-required Hafen). In-Universe with anti-tank lances. Compared to Gallian and Imperial anti-tank lances, which are actually shaped like lances, the Vinland-produced M2EQ is downright sane - while still normally fired from under the arm instead of over the shoulder, the M2EQ has something resembling a stock to brace it with, and it is much lighter at only 10.3 kg vs 16.2 kg for a Gallian Lancaar (and even the higher-accuracy SB9 model, which does have a large blast shield, comes in somewhat lighter than its Gallian and Imperial counterparts at 15.5 kg), likely due to lacking the huge and ornate blast deflectors seen on other lances, which is in turn likely due to operating like the M1 Bazooka (as a recoilless rifle, as well as having a much smaller projectile at 60mm), rather than like a massively overgrown (and reusable) Panzerfaust. Also, its design almost certainly provides better balance than the massive lances used by other nations. That said, despite being designed much more like a serious weapon of war, it's still inaccurate and lancers using it still have all the same drawbacks as their Gallian, Imperial, and Rebel counterparts did in the previous games. | |

Fantasy Counterpart Culture: This game adds a few more nations to the list of fictional countries in the franchise based off real world countries: The Federation itself is an alliance of Western Allied equivalent nations with the glaring exception of Vinland, America's counterpart. However, it's invasion of the Empire only to be struck by the Winter references the failed attempt by the Nazis to do the same to the Soviets, with the Empire itself being a mixture of both inspirations. Finally, the Federation also draws from the Soviets in terms of taking leases from Vinland akin to America's aid to the USSR whilst also emphasizing women in combat, much to the bafflement of the reactionary Empire. While this is more obvious in the first game, the Federation, much like the Soviets, is much more in practice under the heel of a domineering central government instead of being a true alliance, and clearly desires to make puppets out of the countries it liberates. The United Kingdom of Edinburgh is the game's version of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, complete with being located on an island off Europa. As per the real UK, in-game supplementary materials note that the Kingdom was the first nation to industrialise, has a highly trained and respected military force, and was the major global power decades prior. The name of Edinburgh, of course, is borrowed from the capital of Scotland, one of the four countries that make up the UK. Interestingly, Minerva is from a noble family in Edinburgh and she sports vibrant red hair, with Scottish people in real life being stereotypically associated with being redheads themselves. The United States of Vinland is the obvious equivalent to the United States of America. "Vinland" is the name given to the lands settled by the Norse in Northern America. Unlike America in real life, Vinland is more content to give leases to the anti imperial forces rather than enter the Europan war themselves. Like America however, Vinland is developing weapons of mass destruction and may soon enter a war with the game's equivalent to Japan, that like Vinland, is also mysteriously absent in a conflict mirroring World War II. The far north country of Nord Republic that's conquered by the Empire is the Europa's equivalent of Norway, or the Nordic countries in general, especially given the country's name. | |

Likewise, they cannot fire properly in interior settings since their shots would hit the ceiling above them. And finally, their mortars & explosives are heavy to individually carry. This means that grenadiers are the slowest & least mobile class in the game, making them easy targets for enemies when moving. Three of the four superpowerful infantry in this game are supercharged scouts. They're extremely fast and pack a fair punch, but what really sets them apart is their durability and evasion skills. Almost impossible to kill, but this kind of enemy is vulnerable to the kind of tactic one would expect - sneak up on them and blast them with a machine gun. Can't dodge what you can't see! Chiara and Nikola are also crimped by merely lobbing a smoke round from the Hafen. As their visibility is reduced to practically zero, you could march a Shocktrooper right up to their noses and blast them to bits without them dodging out of the way. | |

A number of mess hall scenes involve the cast cracking jokes and taking potshots at each other. The beach DLC, even compared to the DLC involving the main characters from the first game, is highly comical with lots of jokes and wacky music to make light of an inappropriate beach episode amid a war. Special mention goes to Raz embracing the situation, with his highlights including witnessing Kai putting on a tight swimsuit that further emphasizes her rear, which prompts him to grab her ass and get buried in the sand as payback. As if that wasn't enough, he says what's on everyone's mind when witnessing Minerva bent over while putting on a very revealing bikini, yelling to the heavens that he's glad she has a huge pair of boobs. The Hot Springs episode one unlocks in the post game has the Federation heroes run into a group of Imperials in a snow storm, and upon realizing their weapons are frozen, decide to a truce instead of fight it out. After discovering a hot spring, Kai and Riley jump naked to warm up in while the Feds and Imperials begin to argue about Federation women being fighters and not staying in the kitchen. Rather than getting violent, this instead has Riley get out and scold them, forgetting she was naked and forcing Minerva to use Hand-or-Object Underwear to save her, not that it doesn't stop an embarrassed Claude or lecherous Raz from getting the view. All the while, Kai decides to enjoy herself and Just Ignore It. Strangely, this seemingly funny and fanservice episode is necessary to watch to unlock the true ending that confirms Riley's survival. | |

And seeing the squad flashback showing the real Kai with the rest of the squad, its apparent he will play an important role in the story later, particularly when he deserts. After arriving at their new base camp at the beginning of the game, the rest of the squad see naval officers visiting & inspecting the army. Not only does the navy play a major role in the second half of the game, but its implied that they know more about the prospects of Operation Northern Cross than they let on. Later in the game, when the Federation Navy arrives, they describe a new plan called "Operation Cygnus". It is an operation to send three advanced dreadnoughts through the frozen sea to assault & capture the Imperial Capital directly, a plan that requires the element of surprise & complete secrecy. However, when the dreadnoughts are discovered by the empire, their planned objectives deciphered, and even losing one of the ships, the Captain in charge still presses forward with the operation despite losing the element of surprise. This is because the real objective of "Operation Cygnus" is to destroy the Imperial Capital, not capture it, via a Fantasy Nuke that each of the dreadnoughts are equipped with in their reactors, something that only requires one ship to accomplish. And finally, aboard the Federation Dreadnaught, Squad E & the Ship's Engineers discover a young stowaway girl in the ship's engine room, more specifically, near the ship's central reactor, its also noted that the ship is struggling to operate properly after she's discovered. This is because Angie, the young girl, was providing power to the ship itself via her latent Valkyria powers, and was forced to remain in the reactor to do so. | |

SNK Boss: The Vulcan and its upgraded form break the well-established rules about interception fire and small-caliber weapons. First, interception fire can only be done during the other side's turn. Everything else in Valkyria Chronicles 4 and the three preceding games adheres to this rule. Even multi turreted vehicles like the Imperial Medium Tank and Batomys and powerful and frustrating bosses like Selvaria, Maximilian, and Baldren Gassenarl would adhere to this rule. The Vulcan breaks this rule - so long as it is in range of any of your units and is not actively aiming its main gun, its ball turret will shoot constantly for very high damage. Second, it is a consistent rule that small arms other than anti-tank rifles cannot even do Scratch Damage to tanks unless they're shooting the radiator and only do Scratch Damage to APCs. The Vulcan's miniturret can punch right through armor, shredding the Cactus and doing major damage to the Hafen and Glory. With these two factors put together, the only reason the Vulcan is beatable is because the AI fires the main gun when given a chance and ends its turn after firing the gun or running out of AP. | |

All the while, Kai decides to enjoy herself and Just Ignore It. Minerva tries to shield her with Hand-or-Object Underwear, but the player can still see most of her naked body. Kai, as Raz will constantly point out, has a nice rear and bust that the camera and her running animations will emphasize. Like Riley, she also gets to strip naked in the hot springs scene, with just steam obscuring her but leaving enough to get an idea of her Amazonian Beauty. Kai also gets a once-piece swimsuit that is so tight it looks like she's wearing body paint, all the while emphasizing her legs and rear once more. It also highlights that she's got a big bust. Minerva is a glasses-wearing a Reluctant Fanservice Girl who despite being supposedly above this trope due to her nobility, still has a Buxom Beauty Standard figure that is often the subject of Male Gaze camera shots, comments and admiration from her colleagues and have prominent Jiggle Physics while she's moving. The camera even introduces her once breasts-first and her battle taunt gives a close-up of her chest. And the bikini she gets is the most revealing out of all the girls. The boss fight against the Lophius in Chapter 18 is meant to have the player slowly destroying each of its radiators one by one, taking multiple turns to do so as it retracts the intact ones after one has been destroyed. However, if the player can bust all of them at once, then the battle immediately ends in victory. Despite being important for the mission objective, Riley is often the best squad member to pull this off, preferably with an Elias-series launcher and a few Demolish/Penetrate/Blast Boost orders stacked on her. You can do a slightly modified version of this tactic in the Hard version of this mission, only with one of your other Grenadiers, since in the Hard version, you have to move Riley to her spot. | |

Later however, Klauz's personality is able to shine a light on Crymaria's cold and distraught heart to the point where she develops feelings for him, and he clearly reciprocates. In fact, Klauz's love for Crymaria is able to save her from almost killing herself with overloading her powers in a manner not unlike how Crymaria's counterpart Selvaria died in the original game for her love, who was not Klauz's counterpart Jaeger, but rather Imperial Prince Maximillian who never truly loved her back. Therefore, the two are shown to be on more truly loving terms when they meet with Squad E later on. | |

A.K.A.-47: Much as various Gallian tanks strongly resemble German tanks, Squad E's Hafen is nearly a dead ringer for an early-production, welded-hull M4 Sherman, save for a few minor changes like the driver and radio operator hatches appearing to open forward instead of being on the topside of the hull, oversize front drive sprockets, and the use of an Edelweiss-style hood mantlet (which the normal Minute it's modified from lacks). Its upgrades take it further, adding bolted-on side armor and a heavier main gun which gives it an appearance closer to the Sherman's M4A3E8 "Easy Eight" and "Firefly" variants, or experimental prototypes incorporating a 90mm gun in an M26 turret◊. The M91 Robinson Submachine Gun is clearly modeled after various models of the Thompson Submachine Gun. To drive the comparison home, it's also known as the "Robby Gun". Some aspects, however - most notably the magazine well, the retention bar under the muzzle, and the hooded front sight- seem to draw their influence from the German MP38 and MP40. The Lenfield is, as the name implies, based on the Lee-Enfield, though the Lenfield has been modified into a self-loading rifle (No self-loading variant of the Lee-Enfield was ever mass-produced and adopted. They were limited to prototypes and experimental models, such as the BSA Howell and Charlton automatic rifles, and Russell Turner's self-loading conversion of the SMLE.), while the LF Wasp variant used by snipers has remained bolt-action. A bit muddled, however, in that appearance-wise the Lenfield seems to have more in common with the M1 Garand than Lee-Enfield. The Brown rifle (higher attack series) is, as the name implies, based on the aesthetics of the Browning Automatic Rifle. However, it does not draw much from the fuction of the BAR - it does not fire in full auto, has a very low magazine capacity, has its charging handle on the right hand side of the receiver as opposed to the Browning's left-handed charging handle (likely for animation commonality with the Lenfield and Gallian-S), and has a significantly shorter barrel. The Brown rifle also focuses on shooting overcharged ammunition as opposed to the Browning's purpose of squad supporting sustained fire. The Type-F1 Grenade is, like all other hand grenades in the series, based on the German Stielhandgranate. The new Imperial "Assault Tank" is heavily based on the T-34, though it has the suspension of the Panzer III and its armor is less sloped due to its shorter length and greater height. However, unlike the T-34, its flamethrower variant replaces the main cannon, rather than the hull machine gun, and it has a variant with a turret-mounted heavy machine gun. The new Imperial "Ultimate Tank" is pretty much a dead-ringer for the IS-2 heavy tank, down to sharing its armament, a 122mm D-25T cannon of nearly equal length to its real-life counterpart and the same as the cannon seen previously on General Jaeger's Lupus, which may well have been a prototype for the "Ultimate Tank", considering that it strongly resembled a rear-turreted version of the IS-2. Walz's personal tank, the Vulcan, strongly resembles the Jagdtiger(P) "Ferdinand", albeit with a rotating turret instead of a fixed casemate gun. | |

Cool Tank: As a staple of the series, Valkyria Chronicles 4 also features a tank, in this case the Hafen, which can be upgraded and customized as the game progresses. The Hafen is accompanied by the Cactus APC to provide infantry transport. Later joined by the Glory, a Gallian Light Tank requisitioned by Squad F and later joining Squad E when most of Squad F is wiped out and what's left is rolled into Squad E. From the Imperial side, we have Klaus' custom-made tank, the Vulcan Herzog/Procus. Made from the most cutting-edge technology available to the empire, it's incredibly fast, has an independent mounted machine gun that can fire during movement, and its radiator is placed inside its front armor instead of rear-mounted, making anti-armor Grenadiers or high ground the only realistic ways of dealing significant damage, at least until you learn high level orders which let you beat up tanks much more easily. Slap-Slap-Kiss: The relationships between the main guys and gals appear to be defined by this trope in the game: Claude's relationship with Riley and Minerva are full to the brim with this, especially the latter. The slapping is mostly verbal and from the side of the two girls, though in Riley's case literal slapping is involved too. The reason for said slapping is actually quite darker than one might expect. Riley blames Claude for the death of her family in a fire while Minerva has deep seated issues about Claude managing to outperform her and gain all the glory despite her attempts to work and study hard to be the best. As if Minerva's complex wasn't enough, she gains far more venom for Claude as she has reasonable grounds to blame him for the deaths of Squad F due to his detour instead of backing them up amid an Imperial attack. Regardless, both are able to also show affection towards Claude and bury most of their deep seated issues, and come to trust him as a great leader. It's even to the point where both are shown to have feelings for him. However, Minerva clearly has no intention of actually pursuing her feelings with Claude while Riley hooks up with him in the true ending. Raz and Kai are also prone to verbal spats mostly stemming from Raz's foolishness and recklessness, which makes Kai feel that she has a reason to keep him on a leash as his minder. Their slapping is also literal too, though in Raz's case it's due to him being a pervert and slapping Kai's shapeply ass on multiple occasions, which naturally prompts Kai to literally slap him back. Regardless, the two do manage to develop respect and actual feelings for each other, though Raz sadly perishes at the end of Chapter 16, but it's clear that his death filled Kai will resolve and that Her Heart Will Go On to carry his memory. Even the Imperial side has this with the Valkyria Crymaria and Blood Knight Tank Commander Klauz. Their verbal spats also have a dark undertone, since Crymaria, despite being an all powerful Valkyria, is still tortured on multiple levels and her powers are quite unstable while Klauz's jovial personality doesn't exactly make her feel better at first to the point where she' almost willing to send her wolf companion to chow down on him. Later however, Klauz's personality is able to shine a light on Crymaria's cold and distraught heart to the point where she develops feelings for him, and he clearly reciprocates. In fact, Klauz's love for Crymaria is able to save her from almost killing herself with overloading her powers in a manner not unlike how Crymaria's counterpart Selvaria died in the original game for her love, who was not Klauz's counterpart Jaeger, but rather Imperial Prince Maximillian who never truly loved her back. Therefore, the two are shown to be on more truly loving terms when they meet with Squad E later on. | |
