This page contains unmarked spoilers for the previous installments, Wasteland and Wasteland 2.Wasteland 3 is the third entry of the Wasteland series. It was developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Deep Silver, released on August 28th, 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam and GOG.It's been a rough few years for the Desert Rangers. While Team Echo succeeded in saving the world from the genocidal Cochise AI, it came at the cost of nuking Ranger Citadel, where the AI had hidden itself away for over a decade. With their strategic center of operations obliterated and much of their senior staff dead, the Rangers have been struggling to deal with the famine and drought brought on by the AI's attacks on key infrastructure. But salvation may have just come knocking. A transmission has come through from the northeast, beyond the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico. The sender? A warlord known as the Patriarch, ruler of Colorado. He's heard of the Rangers' plight from refugees arriving in his territory, and he has an offer — help him capture his rebellious children, who seek to overthrow him and plunge Colorado into chaos, and in return he'll supply all the food and water Arizona could ever need.An advance team was sent to negotiate, led by Colonel Angela Deth, the last surviving member of the famed Team Alpha. She confirmed his story, but soon afterwards went MIA. In response, Ranger Command has sent an expeditionary force, Team November, to reinforce the Patriarch's forces and find Colonel Deth's team. But soon after arriving, an ambush by some heavily-armed cultists reduces Team November from a full convoy to a single squad. Now, it's up to you to lead the expedition, recruit new Rangers, and help re-establish law and order in these frozen wastes. No pressure, rookie...Wasteland 3 has two expansions. The first, titled Battle for Steeltown and released in June 2021, takes place in the Patriarch's Steel factory to the southwest of Colorado Springs, where problems in the factory have multiplied and stopped the shipment of various alloys. The second, titled Cult of the Holy Detonation and released in September 2021, takes the Rangers to Cheyenne Mountain following a member of the Hundred Families desperate to solve Colorado's power problems.

Monumental Damage Resistance: The Gippers' base of operations is located in what used to be the Colorado State Capitol, rechristened "the Western White House", which looks to be in pretty good shape... despite being only a short distance away from a gigantic, radioactive blast crater (presumably, where the nuke that hit Denver went off).

Creator Cameo: If the name of local don Faran Brygo sounds familiar, that's because it's a Spoonerism of the name of inXile honcho Bryan Fargo, a bit of Self-Deprecation that dates back to the original Wasteland. In that game, Brygo was the boss of the real Vegas, a history which he can discuss with the Rangers. Faran's daughter Marie Brygo also appeared as one of the minor recruits outside of the Citadel in 2. The generic privates who come to staff Ranger HQ are named after the inXile devs who worked on the game.

Heel–Face Door-Slam: One Godfisher recruit who gathered sacrifices given to them by the Patriarch decides to abandon his group and finds love with a woman, regretting all he's done. Unfortunately for him the loved ones of his victims don't care and want to kill him for what he's done. It's up to the player whether to stop them (violently or not) or decide they have the right to revenge even if it means the death of his innocent lover.

Religion of Evil

Religion of Evil: The Dorsey Clan dress up their murder, torture, and cannibalism in the guise of a pseudo-Christian prophecy about a third Deluge to follow the Deluge of Water (the Biblical Flood) and the Deluge of Fire (the nuclear Apocalypse), this one a Deluge of Blood which they intend to bring about themselves. Ironically, they dress like pagans during the middle ages, with the animal heads and pelts they wear. The ascetic, dreamy Godfishers' whole religion seems to be a very twisted version of tengriism. Starting out as hippies and stoners, they believe the gods have abandoned mankind, and seek to lure them back — by hacking off their captives' limbs and tying their still-living torsos to kites made of flayed skin which are then flown in the freezing Colorado winds, in the hopes that the sky gods will accept these offerings and return.

Gone Horribly Wrong: In a side quest you finally corner Dorsey leader Nelius Dorsey, and get the full story about the origins of the clan that bears his name. Turns out that his family was wiped out for being on the wrong end of a political power play. Rather than a simple coup, as the Patriarch says, Dorsey was actually pro-democracy and wanted to institute elections — but the Patriarch wasn't ready to give up power. Nelius managed to escape from a bloodbath led by none other than Percival Wesson, Lucia's father, and once outside the city, Dorsey and his extended family rallied the survivors to rebuild. But they lost their way, forced to survive among the other plains gangs, and as the clan started to talk about nothing but vengeance against Buchanan and bringing about the Deluge of Blood, Nelius lost all but nominal control of them, with the ambush at the beginning serving as a desperate, last-ditch attack to cut off reinforcements for the Patriarch against Liberty's advice. He even admits that yes he should have just talked to the Rangers if the Rangers say as much. It's obvious that he just wants the whole thing over with, even if you execute him on the spot or arrest him for a more formal execution.

Multiple Endings: Killing the Patriarch before the endgame, killing the Patriarch in the opening minutes of the game (which is only possible by cheating), or joining forces with his daughter will all end the game prematurely and cut off several of the usual outcomes. While attempting to transfer Morningstar's consciousness/remove his weapons system, if you stop halfway through to try and mitigate the pain without a high enough Nerd Stuff, you set off the nuclear power system and blow up everything in a mile-wide radius. Game over. The finale plays out in largely the same areas, but who you're fighting changes dramatically based on your decisions, starting with whether you side with the Patriarch or Angela Deth, heavily impacted by whether or not you allied with Ironclad Cordite and if you chose to bring the gangs along, and then by your reputations with the various factions of Colorado Springs.

All Crimes Are Equal: Almost all crimes in Colorado Springs are punished with the pillory, which is effectively a death sentence due to the cold temperature in the Colorado Wasteland. This can be averted by the Rangers; the Rangers can arrest people and send them to Ranger HQ to get locked up safely, instead of sending them to the Marshals. Even if you do let Sheriff Daisy have them, how long you stay in the pillories depends on your crime. One character survived being in them for a few hours but lost his nose and ears. The Magistrate also mentions that minor crimes like drunkenness and public misconduct are punished with a stay in the Marshall's lock-up.

Using an explosive or sniper to start a battle is no longer a Game-Breaker. Sure, you get the opening salvo, but that character will have the action points removed on their turn essentially just treating them as having taken their turn early. Also, only ONE character can shoot first in this manner, preventing the ability to simply have seven Rangers all shoot at the same enemy to down them before battle begins. The main advantage of doing this is that it guarantees your party will go first- this is still advantageous, but it's not as overwhelming as it was in the previous game.

Shoot the Dog: Comes up for both the player and NPCs. The Patriarch in particular is noted for having had to make "hard decisions" by various characters. He knowingly gave up citizens to torture, slavery, and murder at the hands of gangs like the Godfishers and made a deal with the Scar Collectors to give them money and supplies in exchange for not raiding his lands. Cruel, but as he states what else could he have done? The cost of continued war was too high. The player can be forced into a few as well. Save the lives of farmers at the expense of the caravaneers (and their cargo of power armor and the Patriarch's favor), or vice-versa? Or maybe arrest an old woman while her family watches to ensure she can't smuggle refugees into the city and drain the already stringent resources but also leave said refugees with nowhere else to go? The latter in particular will allow one to peacefully transition power in the ending and avoid a bloodbath, which involves her own sons if you side with the Patriarch.

Modular Epilogue: The ending slides tally up your various decisions and show you the consequences of your actions in a sketchy pen-and-ink style... complete with a song! The slides and narration change drastically depending on your choices and reputation levels. Open battle or Talking the Monster to Death are both options for the Final Boss, whether that's the Patriarch or Angela Deth, and the reasons you give for fighting as well as how you deal with them once they're defeated can also change the ending. You can usually spare or execute the Patriarch, but if you brought Cordite and the gangs to CO Springs and told him you were only in it for "all you could grab", Buchanan is so consumed with despair at having lost everything he's built that he shoots himself. You can only avoid fighting Angela Deth with Hard Ass 10 check, and you can only convince the Patriarch to spare her with Kiss Ass 10; otherwise you're forced to fight her to the death. If you brought the gangs with you, you also have the choice of whether or not to let them plunder the city, which determines whether or not Colorado survives and rebuilds. After all is said and done, Team November is always given a choice of whether to return to Arizona, stay in Colorado and rebuild, or set out east on their own. If you brought Cordite along when you took down the Patriarch, he'll offer to let you join his army as well.

Revolvers Are Just Better: Generally, revolvers do higher damage compared to semi-automatic pistols of the same tier, which is balanced by a tendency to hold less ammo, cost more AP to reload, and/or use rarer higher-caliber ammo types. You can also add expanded magazines to them, which removes their one weakness, while the strongest revolver in the game uses the much cheaper and easily found spikes instead of .38 ammo.

Inadequate Inheritor: Absolutely none of the Patriarch's children are fit to rule. Liberty is a power-hungry tyrant who wants to enslave or kill everyone, Victory is an Axe-Crazy sociopath and mass murderer, and Valor is a whiny, immature Small Name, Big Ego Manchild that demands respect and can't see when he's being manipulated. Doubly so since the Patriarch comments that Victory was meant to be his heir, meaning that he would've been giving Colorado to the Joker.

Limit Break: The new Strike meter is charged by each successful attack, and at 100% a character can use a limit break specific to their equipped weapon type. The meter is per character and not per weapon, so it is possible to charge the meter with one weapon, then switch to another. Small Arms Perks combined with their low AP cost tend to make shotguns and especially pistols good at charging Strike quickly.

There is no longer one build that is simply superior all the time. In Wasteland 2, the best possible team was a squad entirely decked out in Assault Rifles, save for a single Sniper whose job it was to initiate combat. Or, which was even more broken, perform a volley salvo of burst fire from all those assault rifles on a single, tough enemy, easily killing it without any chance to even react, not to mention retaliate. In this game, while Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles still have their solid place, they are just one option among many.

Awesome, but Impractical: Some of the highest-ranked weapons such as the Lancer assault rifle or Ray Tracer sniper rifle. The former has less damage than the SOCOM rifle and fires only three times versus Atom Smasher or Daisy's Rifle's five shots. The latter is the strongest sniper rifle in the game but costs a whopping 7 AP to fire, meaning that it's much more practical to get the lower-ranked Eliminator since it can fire twice with a high enough Coordination and the right quirks/utility items.

Succession Crisis: Discussed. All of the Patriarch's children are violently unhinged (Victory and Liberty) at worst, and spoiled and ineffective (Valor) at best, and thus he hasn't chosen an heir. This has made some people worry, since he's at least in his 70's by now, and is suffering from palsy which will degrade him physically and mentally in as little as three years. Siding with the Patriarch and staying in Colorado implies that the Rangers will pick his heir when he dies, while leaving Colorado ends with the note that when he dies Colorado will be fractured and the Rangers will be alone again. Subverted if you own the Steeltown DLC and end it with Markham in charge, as an additional slide adds that Markham is guaranteed to be the Patriarch's successor. The November Reigns ending, meanwhile, has the Patriarch either imprisoned or exiled with the Rangers taking over as a peacekeeping group while the people govern themselves.

Clone Degeneration: A sidequest has you encounter several hostile clones. Once you meet their creator, you learn that they were not supposed to be hostile but apparently they did not come out entirely right. As it turns out, their creator is himself a clone: a fourth-generation clone of a villain from the first game. He actually is not so bad, but he admits that this trope is why he is not nearly as skilled as his progenitor. You can even invite him to Ranger HQ; if you do, he can 'clone' one of your characters but this trope is still in effect: the result is a very simple-minded (though loyal) follower that can do nothing but spout nonsense while it runs around and punches your enemies.

The Cover Changes the Meaning
 Wasteland 3 (Video Game) / int_3f1f6c04
comment
The Cover Changes the Meaning: Many real-life songs appear In the Style of other artists with deliberate Soundtrack Dissonance in mind, several during boss fights. '80s hits are repurposed and transposed to different genres for maximum irony, such as the normal fast-paced "Land of Confusion" by Genesis being turned into a somber, atmospheric Softer and Slower Cover, while "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" by Wang Chung goes from dance track to mournful country ballad as the backing song for the Cannibal Jamboree. A updated, sincerely creepy version of "The Monster Mash" by Bobby Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers plays on DJ R.I.P.'s radio station out of the Bizarre. One goth rock cover features what sounds vaguely like a slowed-down version of the guitar lick from Billy Idol's "White Wedding" but reveals itself as the Theme Tune from Green Acres. The theme from Welcome Back, Kotter is tweaked to be less ironic, as an easy listening folk-pop "hit". WKRP in Cincinnati, on the other hand, goes from easy listening to a retro indie-country style — twangy but dreamy guitars and Perishing Alt-Rock vocals. Christian hymns like "Are You Washed in the Blood" and "Gone to the Valley to Pray" are given a darker, more sinister edge and a driving drumbeat — the latter also has a version sung by a Cherubic Choir of sweet-voiced children which plays in opulent halls of the Patriarch's palace, in a departure from its beginnings as an African-American spiritual believed to have been written by a slave. Patriotic anthems such as "America the Beautiful" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" take on a bitter or even tragic twist. There are three versions of the former: a Creepy Children Singing version as the Patriarch lays you to waste if you make the mistake of attacking him the first time you meet (without cheats); the lounge-y guitar-and-organ version that plays during the fights with or against the Gippers, whether defending the Denver Capitol Building from the Godfishers or fighting your way out of it with the Reagan AI; and a country-western version that plays during the final fight with Vic's inner circle in Aspen. The latter is given a slow, intense gospel cover and plays over two optional 'boss fights': The first being if you choose to extrajudicially gun down a band of poorly armed teenagers and the second if you choose to spring Iron Cordite from prison, who is later revealed to be a brutal Wasteland Warlord and a slaver. Cult of the Holy Detonation adds a version of the Gilligan's Island theme to the radio songs, which is sung more or less identically to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". The change in instrumentation and key ends up making the wacky premise of the series sound a lot more somber and downcast.

Bittersweet Ending: As with the previous game, almost everything is resolved this way. Even the closest thing to the Golden Ending still leaves behind a bitter aftertaste with clear winners and losers. Some people will benefit from your actions, but others will suffer from those same actions, no matter what your choices were. Specific to the main quest if you overthrow the Patriarch, you depose a dictator but throw his lands into chaos, severely crippling any benefits from an alliance between Arizona and an organized Colorado nation-state. Jodie Bell among many others suffers as a result of this and comes to hate you for it. If you support the Patriarch, he's a man of his word and sends the Arizona Rangers the much-needed aid he promised, but you'll essentially be condemning Angela Deth and the other rebels to death, if you don't end up killing them yourself. However, if you make the right friends, it's possible to achieve a peaceful transition of power and bring order to both Colorado and Arizona.

This comes back in the Steeltown DLC, albeit in a less stark way. Abigail Markham is a brutal, dictatorial overlord of Steeltown who cannot even pretend she gives a fuck about her workers, and worse, she's given all major decision-making to the Computation Engine, after she enslaved the synths to it, which almost anyone could have seen would lead to trouble later. Shooting her head of security- a decision even Jodie Bell supports- and backing up Salene Crow when she demands Markham step down seems like the obvious choice. However, Crow actually doesn't know how to run a factory, so if her group of workers take over, they ruin Steeltown and do tremendous damage to Colorado's future prosperity. The reason it's a Downplayed Trope is because there's a way to make the not-quite-right thing into the right thing- if Team November allies with Blue's Ghost Gang. He helped Markham build the place, and he knows how to keep it running, meaning that him and Salene Crow can team up and keep Steeltown going, sparing Colorado the economic damage while still improving the lives of the workers.

No Fair Cheating: If you somehow manage to kill the Patriarch when you first visit Peterson AFB/Ranger HQ (he has extremely high health and armornote His armor is equivalent to a decent suit of Powered Armor and his health is even higher than that of the Final Boss, all while your party only has starting equipment which means he should be undefeatable by conventional means), whether through glitches, exploits or cheats, you will get a ending slide that states "One moment, the Patriarch was in charge. The next, he had been deposed by mysterious strangers from Arizona. It is whispered that they were gods in human form, who didn't 'play by our rules'." The Busker's song also reflects this, calling you out because you "broke the game".

What a Piece of Junk: A rare case where the vehicle itself expresses this reaction. If you install the Morningstar AI into your Kodiak, it'll express a bit of unease from being put inside a clunky old vehicle that is inferior to the one it used to inhabit. However, while the Kodiak might be a rusty bucket of bolts that potentially has a bunch of junk thrown onto its chassis to serve as makeshift armor, it's still a durable combination of a tank and APC that can tread the snowy wilderness of Colorado, and unlike Morningstar's original body, it can actually move. And Morningstar itself makes the Kodiak even more deceptively powerful.

How can you leave a tyrant like the Patriarch in power? But how can you remove him without causing worse damage in the short term, including, once again, the fact that Arizona needs his help? General Woodson points out that the latter choice is not as binary as it appears — the Rangers can re-examine their relationship with the man in the future without burning bridges in the present. And subverted in that there is a Golden Ending in the form of the "November Reigns" scenario.

Cutting Off the Branches
 Wasteland 3 (Video Game) / int_52475ffd
comment
Cutting Off the Branches: While it doesn't dump it on you all at once, scattered hints exist through dialogue and radio chatter setting canon outcomes for the previous game's quests. The gist of it is that Team Echo achieved the "good endings" for nearly every faction, but the final battle was a bloodbath that ended in a Pyrrhic Victory. Radio chatter indicates that God's Militia was reformed by Ascendance and Victoria, so Hollywood survived and both factions are, presumably, doing well. The Mannerite background — and the Mannerite you can meet at the Bizarre — indicate the Mannerites are still in good health. The Rail Nomads were brought together peacefully, but the hard times brought on by Ranger Citadel's destruction have made the fighting start back up. It remains unclear if it was Highpool or Ag Center that got destroyed, but given that food is the most commonly cited part of the Patriarch's supplies, evidence leans towards Ag Center. Given further revelations below about cyborgs, this also most likely means it was Lexcanium who died at Ranger Citadel, taken over by the Cochise AI. The presence of Pizepi and Scotchmo indicate that Team Echo recruited them and kept the presence of mutants at Darwin village secret since Pizepi leaves if you tell Thrasher. Scotchmo will also confuse Ironclad Cordite with Lexcanium. Gary 'NaCL' Wolfe mentions running with a Ranger squad so the canon ending for the Canyon of Titan is the Diamondback Militia gaining control of the nuke. Brother Thomas, Pistol Pete and Takayuki also show up as part of Angela Deth's squad so they were canonically recruited. Judging by Gary Wolfe's comments if your character becomes a cyborg it's also likely that Rose and/or Lexcanium were present at the final battle, and got taken over by the Cochise AI, which would explain his hatred of synths and cyborgs of all kinds.

Affably Evil: Though curt and not exactly warm, the Patriarch is nonetheless fair in his dealings and lets the Rangers get away with a lot more than his reputation might suggest. Victory "Vic" Buchannan counts as well, in a more Faux Affably Evil manner, cheerfully greeting you with a smile after he forced you to go through a gauntlet of his men and the bodies of innocent people he's murdered. He even offers to join your group and, should you refuse, won't fight back and and simply let you cuff him. The Monster Army from the Bizarre are so nice and helpful that you almost forget that they were one of the worst gangs in the country before the Patriarch subdued them (though since that was 50 years ago, it's unlikely any of the current members outside of Flab were part of that). Even Flab recounting their atrocities sounds more like an eager grandfather reminiscing about the good old days. Faran Brygo and his underling Charley Knowes are rather polite and friendly to the player, fitting with their mobster aesthetic. The evil part is removed for Charley assuming he takes over the Bizarre and Brygo is dead/arrested. See Heel–Face Turn below.

Gang of Hats: All the tribes and raider gangs have their defining gimmick and costumes. Many of these are practical, but several are largely for effect: Faran Brygo and his mooks dress like movie mobsters, in hats and suits with tommy guns, complete with stagey, stereotypical Joisey accents and Rat Pack patter. None of them having been further east than Colorado, they learned it all from old tapes. The Monster Army wear rubber monster masks and currently embody a light-hearted Theme Park Version of old horror movies, but they were once one of the most terrifying conquering armies in the region, believing it was not the masks themselves that were scary, but what hiding behind a mask let a person do. The Gippers dress like old-time movie cowboys, love guns, hate communists, and worship an AI version of Ronald Reagan, the Gipper himself. Their leading priestesses all rename themselves Nancy and are ceremonially married to the God-President. Most people think they're crazy, but between their guns and the Eye Beams of their robot statue of Reagan, their control over the oil wells in Denver is mostly uncontested. The Payasos (Spanish for "clowns") are a cross between Latino Gangbangers and nihilist Monster Clowns. They wear full makeup, wigs, and noses, and have a circus motif and a penchant for high explosives, cannibalism, and very Black Comedy, believing the current state of the world proves that existence is inherently absurd and the only thing to do is laugh through the pain.

Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The Patriarch is very clear that he wants the his children back alive and will be displeased if the Rangers can't follow through. Liberty in particular, if taken alive, is removed from prison and allowed back into the palace (albeit still restrained) while her father tries (and fails) to bond with her. He also, at least publicly, excuses away Valor and Victory's crimes by saying the former was kidnapped by the Gippers while the latter wasn't really responsible for the Aspen massacre. Erastus Dorsey despises the Rangers for killing his brother in the intro and swears vengeance on them. The fact that he massacred your team and you were just defending yourself doesn't seem to register.

Jerkass Has a Point: Gary 'NaCl' Wolfe is a synth hunter who continuously insults the rangers and responds to small talk with barely restrained contempt. He's also completely right about the Synths being dangerous and needing to be put down. Synths were made by the Cochise AI for the sole purpose of helping it exterminate mankind and even 'innocent' ones like October-11 were made for the express purpose of being infiltration units and to make humans hesitate. If you let it go it kills another human. He also insults you if you get the cyborg implant but considering what could happen to Rose and Lexcanium if you take them to fight the Cochise AI he has good reason to be wary. Charley Knowes is a gangster who wants to raid the Bizarre and install his own personal cartel in its place. This would involve killing and ousting the Monster Army inhabiting it, who despite their past as a vicious gang, are now a generally harmless crew of eccentrics who run a fair business. However, he raises a valid concern when he points out that they're militarily weak and that it's only a matter of time before a more powerful group conquers them and takes the Bizarre for itself, cutting off one of Colorado's most important trade hubs. The Monster Army is unknowingly being held under siege by the Payasos, and isn't in any position to defend itself once the gang penetrates its defenses (by tunneling into the Warrens), and would likely have been slaughtered by them had the Rangers not intervened. It gets even worse when one remembers that the Payaso is the weakest of the Plains gangs.

The name is both a pun on his weight as well as how he says "Vlad the Impaler" with his fake Vampire Vords accent and plastic vampire teeth — he dresses like the classic image of Dracula (or Grandpa Munster), with a gut that's constantly threatening to burst the buttons of his shirt and waistcoat. He'll even approve if you tell him the name suits him, since, as he points out, very few people in the Wasteland are successful enough to get fat.

Balance Buff
 Wasteland 3 (Video Game) / int_6e1e24a
comment
Balance Buff: The gun jams are removed, making Heavy Weapons more practical along with the general avoidance of the annoyance of your guns constantly jamming, which required specific weapon mods just to avoid the hassle. Attributes are more balanced and now offer a variety of benefits, with Intelligence no longer being One Stat to Rule Them All and Strength no longer being the Dump Stat you (melee fighters not withstanding) grudgingly put points into to deal with the annoyances of encumbrance. Strength is now valuable for any character who is not a Sniper due to giving you a decent batch of extra Hit Points and the ability to wear armor that will keep you alive. After the last game and its Director's Cut botched armor pretty badly, armor is pretty much a necessity in this game. The ten weapon skills of Wasteland 2 were largely condensed into six for this game, reducing the need to spend points into too many different weapons (which in practice left many weapon types ignored). The game combined Pistols and Shotguns into Small Arms, Assault Rifles and Submachine Guns into Automatic Weapons, Bladed and Blunt into Melee weapons, and Energy Weapons were simply folded into other categories as an alternate type of ammo, such as Laser Pistols, Laser Blunt weapons, Laser Assault Rifles, etc. This was so efficient they even added new weapons, like flamethrowers, shrink grenades, and a Frozen Ferret Launcher- most of which use Weird Science as their skill- making the game even more diverse when it came to weapon options. In addition, most weapon skills start at a higher base level of accuracy, providing more incentive to have a back-up weapon. In the previous game, not having at least 3-4 ranks in a weapon skill made even switching to that weapon as a backup or alternate choice mostly pointless. Skills are much cheaper for the first three ranks. Putting ranks into a few skills when starting the game only to find a companion who is much better at that skill is not as harsh this time around. Non-combat skills like Lockpicking were turned into binary pass/fail and let you know the difficulty in advance, removing the incentive for Save Scumming which clogged the previous game.

Guide Dang It!: The prerequisites for the November Reigns ending, which allows you to peacefully convince The Patriarch to step down from power with the support of Angela Deth, the Hundred Families, and the Patriarch's Marshals, are incredibly strict. Not only do you need to be loved by both the Hundred Families and The Marshals (with most of this reputation gain being made in early game, with very little room for error), but choosing incorrectly in at least two different missions can lock you out of getting the ending completely (siding with Mama Cotter over Gideon Reyes and sending the Reagan AI to the Machine Commune or otherwise wiping out the Gippers at any point in their questline). It's telling that two weeks after release, only 0.6% of players on Steam managed to get this ending.

The Patriarch's hands are by no means clean — he's a clear tyrant who associates with some the worst people in Colorado, and if two murderous children and three dead wives are any indication, he's not much better to those closest to him. Nevertheless he really has achieved something closer to bringing back the America of old than anyone else in the wasteland, on a far greater scale, and out of a seemingly genuine desire to see the majority of his people safe and happy — even if that means others suffer unjustly along the way. In the ending where you fight to remove him from power, you can refute his methods or the idea that he's the only one who could achieve this, but he's not wrong when he tells you how difficult it will be not to lose ground or make some sacrifices, whether in Colorado and Arizona, if the Rangers overthrow his rule.

Not Quite the Right Thing
 Wasteland 3 (Video Game) / int_7a19a69b
comment
Not Quite the Right Thing: Fitting with the theme of harsh decisions and compromises, sometimes doing the seemingly good thing can backfire terribly. Eliminating the Gippers means that there won't be any oil for the rest of Colorado since they're among the few left that know how to drill for and process it. On the other hand, allying with the Machine Commune means they can start processing oil as well... which, depending on your actions, they might sell to everyone including the roving bands of raiders, cults and slavers. Choosing Angela's ending without securing the right alliances leads to Colorado becoming fractured and Arizona either not receiving as much help as they could or being abandoned entirely with Jodie Bell in particular having her family killed in the latter choice. Many of the NPCs (and by extension the decisions related to them) end up going down this path: Mama Cotter wants to help the wasteland refugees by smuggling them into Colorado Springs...despite the fact that the city is already overcrowded and straining to supply its citizens as it is, and that adding more is definitely not making things any better. As a result, refusing to arrest her will lock the player out of the November Reigns Golden Ending, as it means Gideon Reyes will not be willing to play ball with the Rangers while in the midst of the refugee crisis. Surprisingly averted in the Cult of the Holy Detonation DLC. The major decisions involved really only have three possible outcomes, one obviously wrong (albeit leading to a joke ending), and two of which are treated more neutrally, with neither falling under this category.

On the other hand, veteran Ranger Angela Deth ghosted on Arizona command, went against orders, and embarked on a campaign to oust the Patriarch and assassinate the man and his children to give Colorado back its freedom and justice... without considering whether this is something most Coloradans want, given the encroaching presence of half a dozen major gangs on the plains, scanning Colorado Springs for signs of weakness. Angie's heart might have been in the right place, but as General Woodson says, she's always seen things purely in black and white — there is a real possibility that without the Patriarch to hold the new nation together, Colorado will fall apart, Arizona won't get its much-needed supplies, and a lot of good people in both states will starve, freeze, or die to raider bullets or in slaver shackles. During the ending where you side with the Patriarch, you can point out that her saying she wants to save lives rings somewhat hollow in light of all the blood that's been shed on the streets of Colorado Springs and in Ranger HQ.

Depending on what you do when you're confronted with the choice of whether to save an Arapaho caravan or some homesteaders, you might make things harder for yourself in the future. If you save the former, but choose to oppose the Patriarch, you'll now have to fight his Marshals who are now decked out in Power Armor that the caravan delivered to him. Siding with Angela and toppling the Patriarch's regime without taking the precautionary steps to allow for a peaceful transfer of power. Congratulations, you ended a tyrant's rule and made sure his evil children will never harm another soul again. Cool Car: Ranger Team November's vehicle, the Kodiak, an armor-plated semi mounted on tank treads with an interchangeable tank turret and mortar. Not only is it the Rangers' main transport in the Colorado wasteland, it also serves as a custom weapon platform when the Rangers get into a firefight, making it a cool tank as well. It can be upgraded with various parts found or purchased throughout the game world, including a self-driving computer (and later a fully-sentient experimental AI), and customized with the hood ornament and horn of your choice.

Exploding Barrels: There are lots of them, generously scattered about fighting arenas. They're usually justified in their placement, though, such as barrels of gas by gas heaters and liquid nitrogen barrels outside walk-in freezers. A dispraportianate amount of them can also be found near Payaso combat encounters, probably because they think it's funny to watch their friends get killed by one in a gun fight.

Deconstructed Trope: For all the post-apocalyptic tropey goodness Wasteland 3 plays perfectly straight, several tropes regarding player choice are thoroughly broken down — in particular the common CRPG point of no return of a choice between which talking head mission advisor you're going to side with. The game is full of Well-Intentioned Extremists who did what they had to do in the unforgiving wastes, most prominently the Patriarch, but also the Marshals, Liberty Buchanan, the various gangs/tribes who aren't simply bloodthirsty raiders, and possibly even the Rangers themselves. Yet repeatedly throughout the game, what seems like a Sadistic Choice with no clear "good" outcome is instead revealed to be less binary than it first seems. With a little effort, investigation, forethought, and luck, you can Take a Third Option. Which is then further deconstructed when it turns out that the third option may still force you to choose who to save, as in the November Reigns ending, which requires you to repeatedly Shoot the Dog, such as siding against the Wastelander Refugees in favor of more influential factions like the wealthy Hundred Families, and killing, not capturing, all three of the Patriarch's children, as would-be heirs.

A free suit of power armor long before it becomes available in the store. It's up to the player whether these benefits are worth the cost.

Asshole Victim: Too many to count considering it's the Wasteland; thankfully, Team November can choose to hose them down with bullets if they find their crimes too abhorrent to let them live. If you opt to kill the Patriarch's children rather than arrest them, before taking the fight back to the Patriarch himself... couldn't happen to a nicer family. Liberty and Vic are both unrepentant mass murderers, Liberty a warmonger and Vic a supervillain-level sadist. Valor's the only one who hasn't got it coming for doing worse, and whether or not he deserves it, he's a condescending, cowardly, unpleasant Manchild with whom the player is unlikely to sympathize. And for all the Patriarch's speeches, he's got a lot of blood on his hands, and the way he talks to you and others when he's not behind a microphone show he's calculating and ruthless... even if his noble intentions are genuine. Scar Collector warlord Ironclad Cordite and Clouds-Drifting-West, deposed head of the Godfishers, are imprisoned by the Patriarch in his family's old, forgotten survival bunker. Considering both of them are unrepentant raiders/cultists with innocent blood on their hands, it's hard to pity them. Zigzagged with the Monster Army. While they're perfectly nice to the player and run the Bizarre fairly, it has to be said that they were one of the worst raider groups in the country during the backstory. If you ask Flab about stories, he'll cheerfully recall past atrocities they committed, such as the murder of a hundred farmers, with only a faint show of remorse if Lucia is present. This makes it easier for the player to side with Charley Knowes when he suggests killing them all to take over the Bizarre. On the other hand, the war with the Patriarch was a long time ago (so much so that Flab might be the only original member left), much of the current Monster Army weren't directly involved, and the veterans seem to have genuinely reformed, which can't be said for Charlie's designs on a coup and his previous backroom beatings with or without Brygo's orders. By that same token, taking care of Charlie Knowes for Flab also counts.

Karmic Death: Contrasting Karma Houdini above, it's quite possible to make sure that the scumbags of the wasteland gets what's coming to them. All of the Patriarch's children can receive this in various ways if you choose to not arrest them. Valor can have his personality erased by the Reagan AI, finally getting the respect he craved only after he's gone; Victory will either blow himself up with his own grenade, be shot as he awaits arrest or be force-fed a clown burger only to die of poisoning by the Payasos, another group of Monster Clown raiders; and finally Liberty can simply be gunned down and denied mercy when she surrenders, fitting with her world view of mercy being a weakness. The Patriarch can be killed outright at any time in the game (though this is an extremely bad idea) or commit suicide if you bring the Raider gangs to Colorado Springs and tell him you plan to take everything from him. Depending on your view Angela's death counts as well since she does lead half your base to revolt if you side against her.

Take a Third Option
 Wasteland 3 (Video Game) / int_950bbfa7

Take a Third Option: The choice of ending seemingly boils down to whether one sides with The Patriarch or Angela Deth which leads to half of your base revolting and a bloody shootout in the streets. If you get your reputation with both the Marshals and the Hundred Families to Loved and talked to both Sheriff Daisy and Gideon Reyes about transitioning power, however, you can simply arrest/exile The Patriarch in a bloodless transition of power. This way you avoid half of your base having to be killed and companions like Lucy and Kwon leaving/being killed while still allowing Arizona to receive the supplies it needs. Instead of siding with the Gippers (which kills Valor and angers the Patriarch) or the Machine commune (which kills the Gippers and stops oil from flowing), one can steal the Reagan AI and hold it hostage. This allows you to arrest Valor and keeps both factions from dying, but both of them end up hating you, and the ending mentions they're stockpiling weapons. In the questline in which November deposes the Patriarch with the help of "Red"/Angela Deth, not so dead after all, the team is told they have to work with Ironclad Cordite, an unrepentant slaver, warlord, and all-around bastard, to take over the Plains Gangs so that the latter can aid the Rangers against the Patriarch. It's the only way, you're told: you need the gangs' manpower, and as bad as they are, the Patriarch is worse. If the player goes along with it unquestioningly every step of the way, it achieves the worst possible ending for everyone: Arizona dies without the Patriarch's supplies, Colorado dies without leadership, and Ironclad Cordite leads an army to go destroy Kansas. Instead, it turns out you don't actually need Cordite or the gangs in order to seize Colorado Springs by force. In fact, what Angela has failed to consider is that you can win the city's factions over to the Rangers' side peacefully — up to and including the Patriarch himself in the November Reigns ending. Notably this is never considered by any of the major NPC leaders, so it's something Team November must come up with on their own, which the player must engineer through careful decision-making across Colorado. In the Steeltown DLC, siding with Markham leads to a final choice of either supporting Markham by brainwashing and re-enslaving the Synths that drive the Calculation Engine, or supporting Blue and the Synths by releasing them from slavery (you can also kill the Synths and blow up the Calculation Engine, but no-one will like that). With very high Kiss Ass and Hard Ass it is instead possible to negotiate a compromise on behalf of the Synths where they are freed from the Calculation Engine and instead voluntarily employed as administrative staff in Steeltown, maintaining Steeltown's machine-driven central planning while avoiding the outright slavery of sentients.

Defiant to the End: The beginning narration says this about the Rangers. Even as they've been ambushed, even as they are being slaughtered left and right, Rangers never stop fighting. Mixing with Face Death with Dignity, this is The Patriarch's fate if you depose him. Whether he's exiled into an unknown fate, stuck in the pillories to freeze to death or simply thrown in prison till he dies from his palsy, he refuses to break or apologize and insists that everything he did was for the good of Colorado. The only time this is averted is if you brought the raider gangs to loot Colorado Springs and tell him you plan to take all you can get. In that case he shoots himself out of despair.

Interface Spoiler: The game inherits the "talking head" dialogue feature from Fallout 2, wherein a small number of characters have dialogue accompanied by a lip-synced and (in Wasteland's case) fully motion-captured character model with appropriate sound effects. As in Fallout 2, finding a character with one of these is a hint that they're either a major story figure or a recruitable companion. This is especially true for Fish Lips, a companion introduced without preamble in a side quest.

Late Character Syndrome: Pizepi joins far later than the other companions, requiring her to be rescued at the Aspen hotel from Victory Buchanan before she can be added to the party. While she has decent stats, including a fully maxed out Automatic Weapons bar, the fact that she comes so late means there's very little time to use her before the player goes after Liberty and initiates the endgame. She also doesn't get any perks from HQ staff that the older party members have unless the player waited to talk with them until after she's recruited. Victory Buchanan is even worse since he has spent skill points on two combat skills and Hard Ass, which the player has likely raised already considering how late you can get him.

Action Pet: Team November can acquire animal companions (ranging from a cat in a Ranger hat to a two-headed ram) with the Animal Whisperer skill. Said animals will provide your rangers with a passive bonus and can attack enemies during battle- and some even have unique abilities, like wolves howling to frighten foes or goat headbutts knocking people out for a turn. The most action-oriented of the pets is the honey badger, found surrounded by corpses and requiring a hefty maxed out Animal Whisperer skill to recruit. It makes up for the investment by having absurd stats and the ability to solo most fights. In a variant on this, quests add additional non-controllable party members who basically function like pets, save they don't give a passive bonus. These include a failed clone, a security drone from a crashed Russian space station, a cute little golden toaster that fires multiple spreads of flaming toast, and Poultron, a Combining Mecha made up of cyborg chickens. However in the "Battle of Steeltown" DLC they will gleefully try to murder the workers you are trying to just subject to Non-Lethal K.O. so if you're doing a Pacifist Run you'll have to dismiss all of them, at least until near the end. The game at least has the curtesy to inform you of this during the DLC specific tutorial.

One Riot, One Ranger: The Rangers were supposed to have fifty people to accomplish the Patriarch's task of getting his children back, but due to the Dorsey ambush at the beginning, this number is whittled down to two (three if you manage to save Jodie Bell). Karma Houdini: Numerous examples depending on your choices. You can help a slaver regain a lost slave and, assuming you don't shoot her, can even just tell her to leave to do it elsewhere. Tinker from Wasteland 2 survived its confrontation with Team Echo and repaired itself. If you convince it to throw aside its hatred of humanity then it essentially gets away with murdering an entire town and converting both Lexcanium and an innocent girl into machines against their will. Ironclad Cordite if he's busted out of his cell. If you don't fight against the Patriarch he'll simply leave (without giving you the chance to kill him) and the ending states he's making plans to take over Kansas again. Fishlips, if recruited, will go back to his gang in the Patriarch ending to continue his cannibalistic raider ways. Also applies if you have him take over Denver since he and his gang of cannibals get a monopoly on the oil. The Patriarch and Angela Deth in their respective endings. Assuming you side with the Patriarch he receives no punishment for his Shoot the Dog moments unless you count his inevitable physical and mental decay from palsy. Likewise Angela receives no punishment for essentially fracturing Colorado and leaving it vulnerable to the roaming gangs of raiders and cultists. The November Reigns ending is the only one to avert this since the Patriarch is either imprisoned or exiled for his crimes while Colorado isn't fractured. Liberty will escape and create another gang to vie for the throne again assuming The Patriarch is dethroned and Team November leaves Colorado. The ending notes she has a good chance of getting the throne this time around. Averted by Victory Buchanan. Even if the player allows him into the party the ending states that he tries to create another gang only to be force-fed a clown burger by the Payasos and died from poisoning. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Alternate History: In the Wasteland background story, the Soviet Union never broke up and the Cold War turned hot in 1998 after Americans got duped by their own AI and struck first under false alert. All Hail the Great God Mickey!: A gang named the Gippers in Denver have taken to worshiping Ronald Reagan as a god. Their "god" is an AI modelled after the president in the last days before the Apocalypse, and their priesthood models themselves after Reagan's wife Nancy... as well as Reagan's movies, being fond of cowboy mannerisms. Hilariously, they also seem to have found meme pictures of Reagan as well, and don't know enough to separate them out from the reality; one portrait in their mansion is of Reagan riding a Velociraptor, an image familiar to anyone who's spent time on the Internet. Morningstar, since he knew Reagan, is driven to spluttering fury over the stupidity of the whole thing, and points out the man would hate to be worshipped since he was a devout Christian.

Soundtrack Dissonance: Most battles utilize ambient or techno tracks, but the boss fights are another matter. Cloying Christian standards such as "Are You Washed in the Blood" and "Down in the Valley to Pray" are arranged to be dark and drum-heavy with jangling guitars — making them suitable to the context in their new form, but with the added cognitive dissonance of knowing where those songs originally came from. "Battle Hymn of the Republic" is also a pretty ironic song to be playing if you intend to actually free Ironclad Cordite. A straight version of "America the Beautiful", accompanied by electric organ, plays as an animated statue of Ronald Reagan annihilates members of a psychotic hippie cult with his Eye Beams. The DLC gets into this as well, with Battle for Steeltown using a minor-key version of the pro-union hymn "Power in the Union" for a boss battle that's essentially a union bust though players are allowed to side with the workers on both occasions, playing it straight instead, while siding with Steeltown's odious chief of security will net you a minor-key and very sarcastic-sounding cover of Harry Nilsson's "Best Friend" instead. Cult of the Holy Detonation uses a relentlessly cheery country rendition of "Making our Dreams Come True" for its final battle against a hideous invulnerable mutant who is planning to drench Colorado in radiation.

Sadistic Choice: Similar to the Highpool/Ag Center choice from Wasteland 2, the moment you get out of Colorado Springs, you're faced with the choice of whether to save the lives of an innocent family of farmsteaders (they did ask first) or a shipment of Powered Armor for the blatant corrupt Colorado Marshals — whose approval is your best hope of sending help back home to Arizona. The stakes are slightly smaller, in this case, but the theme is set: there isn't always going to be a Golden Path that lets you get everything you want and save everyone you're trying to save.

Unlike the previous game, however, he's not your superior officer, so he doesn't give orders or hand out promotions. November are their own COs, and with General Woodson largely out of radio contact on the other side of the Rockies, all major decisions are made at your own discretion.

Boom, Headshot!: One not uncommon outcome of gunplay, with targeted Subsystem Damage available (albeit only with rifles and pistols when the Strike meter is full), in classic Wasteland tradition; headshots do more damage, with a percentage chance to do even more, rather than inflicting Status Effects like other targeted shots. Also appears in-story: what is ostensibly the game's first boss Killed Midsentence by a sniper bullet that removes a good third of his skull and splatters it all over the screen.

Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: It's clear that some of the companions don't exactly get along. Lucia looks down at Kwon for being a Dirty Cop, while he calls her a pain in the ass to her face, for example. (They also have a dialogue in which he tries to flirt with her and gets shut down.) Victory Buchanan and Fishlips have it worst since practically no one likes them, and Lucia suggests shooting Victory even after he's been recruited.

Big Bad Wannabe: Victory and Valor. Valor is simply being used as a pawn of the Gippers and they don't hesitate to essentially kill him to give the Reagan AI a body. Ironically enough, arresting him is probably his best outcome. Victory, while a dangerous mass murderer, has little chance of actually invading Colorado Springs with his gang and ends up dying an Undignified Death after being force fed a clown burger by the Payasos in any ending where he's not arrested or killed.

Religious Robot: Comes in a few flavors. The Morningstar AI was designed to have ideals compatible with those of Ronald Reagan, including a belief in the Christian God and Heaven. It confesses that, as a machine, it probably doesn't have a soul, but it was programmed to be hopeful about its chances to go to Heaven after death and finally meet Reagan. Null Stack and his scavengers seem to have developed their own religion independently, focusing around a "Great Programmer" god figure who will initiate a "Great Reboot," perfecting all organic life and machines in the process.

Shout-Out: It wouldn't be Wasteland without '80s references! A massive shout-out to Knight Rider in the form of Morningstar, an AI designed to drive the most advanced presidential limousine for Reagan. Countless quotes from the real President Ronald Reagan, with references to his careers in both Washington and Hollywood. The Gippers take their name from Reagan's nickname of the Gipper, which in turn is a reference to his role as George Gipp in Knute Rockne, All American. One of their holy texts is called the Book of Bonzo. The Reagan AI's appearance as a polygonal Huge Holographic Head on a screen, his rainbow-tinted wireframe/shifting multicolored screen-saver background, and his constant distorted robot stammering are all references to the title character of Max Headroom, another '80s standby. As usual, the descriptions of items are filled with countless references to other works, for instance a book that proposes to teach you how to "Turn Your Jan into a Marcia" or a lunchbox that says "These bears left a stein on our memory" as a reference to the Pop Culture Urban Legend of the Mandela Effect. Gather all the cyborg chickens and they'll assemble themselves into Poultron. Collect all the golden toaster pieces and the golden hammer and your character will craft the fabled golden toaster. Take it to the secret shrine of the age-old fraternity of Toaster Repairmen and it's brought to life as a follower named Courageous — yes, a brave little toaster. Rollan Giff, pitmaster of the Cannibal Jamboree, is named after Roland Gift, lead singer of New Wave band Fine Young Cannibals. David Steeler and Andy Coss are bassist David Steele and guitarist Andy Cox, and Parry Marlin and Grahaminahamham are touring members Martin Parry and Graeme Hamilton. The record on the player is labelled "Dapper Youthful Cannibals". Someone was a fan. Billy is a common enough name for a (billy) goat, but having a second head named Jean makes the Hoons' two-headed goat Billy (&) Jean a Michael Jackson reference. The hidden achievement "November Reigns", awarded for managing a peaceful transition of power from the Patriarch to the Rangers, is a reference to the Guns N' Roses song "November Rain" from 1991's Use Your Illusion I. A rather obscure one: A fortune teller can give your party some items with the phrase "May it be of no use." The exact same phrase was used by Hakunin the shaman in Fallout 2 when asked for healing powder. In the Machine Commune, a group of robots are standing around a (frozen dead) tortoise. Said tortoise is on its back. The robots are discussing what they should do about it, but none of them are helping. Why aren't they helping? Early in the Steeltown DLC content the party is subject to a series of tests, one of which is an ocular test. Said test involves a display of variously colored lights, and the player being asked how many lights they see. Of course, "There are four lights!" is an option. The Steeltown DLC also features an NPC named Newt who can be encouraged to infiltrate the facility via the ducts. Just to establish that this is not coincidence, she will at one point comment on the rats by saying that "They mostly come out at night. Mostly." Then you meet her mother, Ellen, who mentions her friend, Bishop. Also in Steeltown is an old rusted-out police car emblazoned with the number 54. Near said police car is an old Volkswagen Beetle marked with the number 63 (maybe a relative of Herbie?). The Steeltown work assignments to repeatedly tighten and loosen the same nut are based on the short story "The Good Work" by Theodore L. Thomas. After you try Masato’s pork noodles in the Bizarre, he will happily exclaim “a man who never eats pork is never a whole man!â€ In a random dialogue, two of the servitors in the Ranger HQ's command center dispute which of them is the "prime" servitor. Greatski tells them to knock it off because "you can't fight in here, this is the War Room!" The Cult of the Holy Detonation DLC, taking place in the legendary Cheyenne Mountain Complex, centers around an immensely powerful piece of technology that holds a giant glowing energy source within a spinning metal ring... well, several rings, but still. In addition, the Holy Detonation cultists fight primarily with radiation spitting submachine guns built out of what looks like FN P90s.

Nothing Is Scarier: The Abandoned Oil Well location has a circle of "juvvies", teenagers in gas masks (likely a Continuity Nod to the teenagers who lived and died in Highpool during the Rangers original visit there), standing around some sort of huge Tesla coil. They don't answer when you try speaking to them, but they all turn to watch you in perfect unison wherever you go on the map. They don't seem to do anything... until you try pulling a weapon to attack them, at which point the area fills up with noxious gas and your party passes out. When you come to, the juvvies are gone and all that's left of the coil is a pile of dust and debris containing the Exoskeleton Helmet and Purist Patty Creepy Doll (+5% damage vs. mutants).

Wacky Wayside Tribe: The Bizarre, a fortified bazaar entrenched in the ruins of an underground shopping mall, and one of the first major locations you're likely to visit due to its low level, proximity to Colorado Springs, and importance to some important early sidequests. Despite being a pretty important part of the backstory (the Monster Army is one of the most important and infamous of the Patriarch's conquests, and the Bizarre is the economic center of the region), the location and its quests barely affect the main plot at all. This is likely due to their inclusion being a crowdfunding stretch goal; by necessity they were likely written in a way that would make them easy to remove if the goal wasn't reached.

Recruitable companion Marshal Darius Kwon (technically ex-Marshal, though it's a bit hazy as he was tapped to report officially to the Patriarch by Buchanan himself) manages to be both a cop and a Lovable Rogue thanks to the corruption of the Colorado Springs police force. He plays fast and loose with the law and isn't averse to taking bribes and looking the other way for what are technically crimes, but his heart is generally in the right place and he's very much A Lighter Shade of Grey compared to Daisy and her loyalists — though he's fine with most of it and doesn't see it as his job to try and fix things. He can live with the status quo, given what he sees as the alternative of leaving the door open to the plains gangs, and doesn't envy the Patriarch for having to make the hard decisions. He'll also leave your party if you try to attack an innocent person.

What the Hell, Hero?: Team November will almost certainly end up on the receiving end from numerous NPCs, no matter what your choices. Nobody can begin to guess why the Rangers are palling around with Vic Buchanan if you recruit him after Aspen. You're never really given the option of offering any sensible explanations in dialogue, either. Perhaps it boils down to the sheer entertainment value. If you opt to bring the gangs with you to Colorado Springs during the endgame, even Cordite himself is surprised. He warns you he won't be able to control them, and pretty much everyone else turns on you, including most of the NPC recruits back at HQ. Vic is delighted, Gonzalez and a few generic recruits seem to assume you must know what you're doing, but otherwise only the most evil of Token Evil Teammates (Fishlips, Gary Wolfe) stick by you (and Scotchmo, who seems not to have been paying attention), while most others rue the day they ever met you and try to kill you. Pizepi washes her hands of you and makes tracks back to Arizona. A pair of cultists in the Children of the Holy Detonation DLC will use the intercom at Cheyenne station to constantly decry Team November for whatever you chose to do during the game. Since they're hostile, they'll basically chew you out for all outcomes of quests until they run out of things to criticise you over.

Hypocrite: Angela Deth abandoned the mission to get supplies for Arizona because they would’ve been ‘stained’ due to the Patriarch being a tyrant and that Rangers were always meant to fight against those. This doesn’t stop her from allying with Ironclad Cordite, a raider and slaver who killed and enslaved many, and will likely continue doing so if allowed to continue his "destiny" in Kansas. Lucia actually calls her out on this if present and she simply says the situation isn’t ideal. Of course, she had a similar moment in Wasteland 2 where she cold-bloodedly murders the guy who ran away from a fight in which her lover died despite the fact that he wasn't a fighter, yet would start a fight with you if you didn't do everything on the up and up.

Yuki Onna: Unbelievably, an entity quite like one of these is hanging around the Denver Ruins. Spawning only if at least one Godfisher camp has been cleared and Denver re-entered, there is one standing near the frozen container and safe in the corner between the camps. The mysteriously-strange woman with blue skin is called the Woman in White; all interactions with her, save talking to her and leaving her alone, will cause her to disappear in a blur of snow, and the entire party to get the Chills condition.

Dystopia Justifies the Means: Liberty's grand plan is to sweep into Colorado Springs with the combined might of the plains gangs at her back, replacing her father's relatively free society with brutal serfdom. As the Patriarch says, she wants to rule, not govern. The same can be said for Ironclad Cordite's plans for an empire in Kansas in which he would enslave everyone to weak to fight against him.

Nerf: Using an explosive or sniper to start a battle is no longer a Game-Breaker.

Insistent Terminology: The sentient machines found in the game often have very specific quirks in how they speak about their kind and humanity, particularly in contrast. The Machine Commune prefer to be known as "machine intelligences," because "artificial intelligence" implies that they are not truly sentient. Likewise, Religious Robot Null Stack insists on referring to all sentient beings as "machines," with robots being "inorganic machines," and conventional lifeforms referred to as "organic machines."

Talking the Monster to Death

Dirty Cop: The Colorado Marshals, and everyone knows it. They openly take bribes and brag about their Police Brutality in front of you, under the guise of a necessary evil to keep order in Colorado. Sheriff Daisy seems to be genuinely loyal to the Patriarch, or at least believes someone like him is necessary to project strength in the region, and doesn't seem interested in power or money for their own sake. She is, however, a brutal authoritarian who believes violence and intimidation are the best way to uphold the law. Frank Pappas, a down-and-out former lawman living in obscurity, is made out to be the worst of them, but this is subverted if you let him join the Rangers — it seems like he was forced out because he was too disgusted by his fellow officers to keep letting it slide.

Easily Forgiven: Oddly, if the player goes to the Patriarch's secret bunker/prison black site, likely killing almost every merc inside along with possibly two of his valuable prisoners, then tells the Patriarch about it, he just sternly warns them not to do it again and never brings it up afterwards. Liberty in the Patriarch ending, to an extent. She's returned back to the palace, albeit restrained at all times, while the Patriarch tries to be a family with her again. Victory and Valor don't get this mercy and presumably, since they aren't mentioned in the ending, remain imprisoned.

Earn Your Happy Ending: The November Reigns ending is the most difficult ending to get with around 1~2 percent of players having gotten it. It requires getting oil back from the Gippers (meaning either you hold their AI hostage or sacrifice Valor) while getting a Loved reputation from both the Hundred Families (arresting Mama Cotter is a requirement) and the Marshals, meaning one mistake and the ending is inaccessible. It does, however, lead to the most idealistic outcome with the Patriarch punished for his crimes, democracy being re-introduced, Arizona getting its much needed supplies and the Rangers expanding now that they have a presence in two areas.

Player Character: You start out with two Rangers, either custom-made or chosen from the ready-made options; the latter have unique background traits you cannot select any other way. Unlike companions, these characters are unvoiced and entirely controlled by the player — they won't leave, and while they have full access to the entire party's highest available skills during dialogue, they can also be swapped out for alternate recruits at any time while at HQ, making it somewhat hazy where Team November as a unit ends and leadership of the Arizona Rangers in Colorado begins. The pregen character duos cannot be customized, but have unique background traits, trinkets, and party banter amongst themselves.

Well-Intentioned Extremist: The Patriarch's hands are by no means clean — he's a clear tyrant who associates with some the worst people in Colorado, and if two murderous children and three dead wives are any indication, he's not much better to those closest to him.

Gondor Calls for Aid: Successfully solving Steeltown by getting Crow and Blue to join forces by freeing the Synths will lead to a coalition of the workers, the ghosts, the synths and the civilians outside the walls joining forces to defend Steeltown against Liberty's raiding party in the DLC's final battle. Unfortunately due to Redemption Demotion they will not benefit from the Level Scaling of Liberty's forces and be horribly under-leveled, meaning the Rangers will still have to do most of it themselves, but they can be a significant speed-bump and would have inflicted a Curb-Stomp Battle on the invaders if they'd kept their level-inflated stats.
