Echo is a 2015 Psychological Horror Furry Visual Novel developed in Ren'Py by the Echo Project group. The story follows Chase, a river otter and a journalism student, on a reunion with his friends in the down-on-its-luck southwestern desert town Echo (based off the real life town of Echo, Utah). He is there to document the town's turbulent history for his college project over the spring break of 2015. At first, the otter is all too happy to reconnect with his old friends, but soon tensions rise as an incident from the past resurfaces and threatens to tear the group apart for good. Chase also comes to realize that Echo may not be all it seems, as unsettling phenomena reveal a more sinister side to the small town he's called home for most of his life.Following the prologue, Chase can spend the remainder of his week with one of five childhood friends: "TJ" Hess, a religious and somewhat naïve Canadian lynx who would rather go on a hike than get into arguments with friends, Flynn Moore, a belligerent down-for-anything Gila lizard with a razor-sharp tongue, Jenna Begay, a playful but studious fennec fox attempting to work her way into a psychology degree from a background of poverty and dysfunction, Leo Alvarez, Chase's wolf ex-boyfriend who suggested the idea of a reunion after hearing that Chase would be returning to film the town for his school project, and Carl Hendricks, an anxious stoner ram currently mooching off of his wealthy parents in their Big Fancy House. The resulting plot events and relevant side characters will vary widely depending on which of the friends you choose, with the only real constant being that things will inevitably reach a breaking point. You can follow Echo Project on Patreon and Twitter for updates on Echo and other projects, as well as download the novel for free on itch.io.. A short prequel titled Echo: Route 65, which follows Chase & the main cast during a Day of the Dead party in 2008, is also available for download here. In addition, several short stories from the perspectives of the six members of the main cast were written for Patreon members, with one of them (titled Benefits) later being distributed for free on itch.io as well. The visual novel finally reached completion in April of 2021, with a full anniversary update an year after, with both a prequel and sequel for the story currently in development as full-length visual novels of their own; the prequel, titled The Smoke Room, (itch.io page here) follows the events of the initial hysteria incident in 1915note The prequel's original Working Title. that inspired Chase's project to begin with, while the sequel Arches follows a pair of entirely new characters visiting Echo 5 years after the events of the game. See also Adastra (2018), a full-length visual novel by the same creators that shares its name with a Show Within a Show (which In-Universe is closer to a Star Trek pastiche than a political thriller about falling in love with a wolf man). Another project, Glory Hounds, was also created by the same team, but is about super-heroes (amusingly, Echo there is a telenovela, same as Adastra is a Star-Trek like show in Echo). Yet another project, A Role To Play, will mark the team's departure from furry stuff altogether into the world of tabletop gaming. This visual novel contains violence, sex, and disturbing imagery that is unsuitable for readers under 18.note Note that the majority of the routes avoid having explicit sexual scenes with Flynn’s being the exception. Otherwise, Echo depicts themes of mental illness, bullying, substance abuse, and abuse. As an additional warning, all of Echo Project's material will be of an adult nature and readers must be 18 or older. Therefore, all novels and external links posted here are potentially NSFW so please proceed with caution if you prefer not to see explicit content.

Dying Town
 Echo (Visual Novel) / int_1045c71a
comment
Dying Town: The town of Echo has been in a constant state of decline for decades prior to the novel's story. It started out as your typical Gold Rush-era Boom Town that reached its peak population of 6,500 in 1877. Several mass hysteria events lead to numerous residents fleeing over the years. Other contributing factors to the town's decline were the mines shutting down in the 1940s, the railroad branch feeding into the town shutting down in the 60s, and the Interstate highway bypassing the town soon after. By 2015 (the time of the novel's main story), the population was only 50 people, with the town littered with abandoned homes, closed businesses, and disused industry. Most residents commute to the nearby city of Payton for work and school. Echo doesn't seem to have its own hospital or police department either since it's mentioned those resources come from Payton as well. The 2015 hysteria was the final nail in Echo's coffin, with most of the surviving residents leaving for good. Arches takes place five years after the event and shows Echo as a completely abandoned Ghost Town with only two known residents remaining: Duke and Brian.

Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: While Jenna and Jeremy don't exactly seem to have the best sibling relationship, Jeremy seems genuinely curious about her welfare when speaking briefly with Chase (even smiling slightly upon hearing she's doing "better than everyone else"), and on Jenna's side of things the necklace she always wears as part of her Limited Wardrobe is one that was implied to have been given to her by Jeremy. Unfortunately, it's still not enough to stop him from willfully leaving her and some of her friends at the mercy of the local Serial Killer.

Earn Your Bad Ending: Getting the worst ending for Jenna's route involves giving the "wrong" answer to two seperate questions (the "correct" answers for which are fairly easy to figure out from context) at one point during her route, meaning it can be difficult to get said ending even on purpose without knowing what to do beforehand.

Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Carl, when playing a Drinking Game version of "Never Have I Ever" with TJ & Chase (both choosing to use their fingers instead), begins seeing some of TJ's suggestions ("Never have I ever failed a test", "Never have I ever been in a car accident", etc) as deliberately personal slights against him and counters with "Never have I ever killed someone.", resulting in TJ giving him a surprisingly cold dressing-down before stomping out.

comment
The Sociopath: James Hendricks fits the trope to a tee. He shows absolutely no concern or remorse for his actions, threw away his lover John the moment it became beneficial to him, was apparently well-known for being manipulative among the townsfolk at the time and his sole motivation is to preserve his name by covering up any potential evidence of his crimes, never once considering his own actions (past or present) to be wrong in any way. Pretty much the only decent thing we hear of him doing is an article that Chase finds early on in the route that mentions he regularly sent money to his sister and her family just as he promised her he would.

Not Helping Your Case: John Begay would probably have a somewhat easier time getting the group to help him to prevent James from disposing of evidence and getting away with his crimes if he wasn't blatantly possessing his descendant's body against their will and generally acting as suspiciously as possible. Somewhat Justified though, as not only does Leo's route imply that he's more of a "simulation" of the real John Begay than his actual ghost, but he and James are also being physically prevented from giving Chase and the others vital information by some other entity running the whole thing.

Chase's justification is that he's asking questions to buy time before escaping, but it's implied he's simply too afraid to try and run away as Brian is blocking the exit, and has a weapon in his hand along with a demonstrated size and speed advantage.

Bittersweet Ending: The best you can hope for in nearly all routes (and explicitly stated to be the intention by the author), provided you don't get the outright bad endings. In Carl's route everyone trapped in the mansion makes it out alive and all four become good friends... but Leo, TJ & Flynn's lives are implied to be ruined by their experiences with the hysteria and Carl breaks off your romantic relationship. In Leo's route Chase makes peace with his ex, finds new love and escapes the town with the rest of his friends... but is still plagued by nightmares while Leo's life remains stagnant in Echo and he chooses to cut off contact with Chase for the time being, although he is at least recovering from his obsession with their relationship. He does say that he would be willing to see Chase again if he ever returns to Payton, once he's in a better place mentally. He also moves back in with his family, finally leaving Echo after spending two years there alone. In TJ's route Chase kills Flynn in a tragic repeat of the past, it's ambiguous how TJ feels about him (and whatever it is, it's probably not romantic in any way) and the epilogue doesn't involve Chase or his friends at all, making his and the rest of the main gang's eventual fate ambiguous... aside from Flynn, who's implied to have become yet another one of the town's vengeful spirits, making the whole thing a full-on Downer Ending. In Flynn's route it's implied that most of the main cast survived the hysteria, but Flynn (who was possessed halfway through the route) has a supernatural experience that ends with him permanently turning into a monster some of his friends had seen in the past. note  Said creature is mentioned in some of the other routes, being described as having a face that resembles a wall outlet and showing up when someone in the group was going through a very dark time in their life. Flynn/The Creature then goes back in time and encounters Daxton, TJ and Jenna, where the latter twos previously mentioned scenes of witnessing the monster play out the exact same way. Also, the optional epilogue reveals that Chase has been living alone for five years in the now abandoned Echo, with the rest of his friends presumably cutting ties with him after discovering he killed Sydney and his journalism career completely failing soon after, making the route also finish mostly at a Downer Ending. In Jenna's route The trope is actually completely avoided for a change, with the gang not only escaping the hysteria in one piece but their friendship becoming stronger than ever as a result of the experience (even gaining a member to their friendship group in the form of Micha), as well as implying that Chase can finally come to terms with what he did to Sydney and will no longer have his life controlled by Sam. Pretty much the only low points to the ending at all are Carl being heavily traumatised by his experiences with Brian's Torture Cellar and hints that Flynn's aunt was killed offscreen during the events of the hysteria, but even these are tempered somewhat by them having eachother (not to mention the rest of the gang) to rely on.

Meaningful Background Event: The van scene in Route 65 may come off as just another Dream Sequence showing the same exact things that haunted Chase being in full swing at that time as well. It focuses on reusing symbols from other routes and tying them together, including the van itself, potentially Shadow Chase or some other monster, and Chase's fear of spiders. Treat it as a legitimate walking hallucination with Chase's mind warping things that he's really seeing into these, and everything takes a supremely different context that reshapes Leo's entire following conversation with Chase, in all of its evasiveness and inconsistency, and the foundations of their relationship as a whole. It also establishes some key things about Leo's sense of self worth.

Cannot Spit It Out: A big theme is that Leo and Chase’s relationship falling apart was due to this, with Chase refusing to outright break things off with Leo to his face even when it became exceedingly clear to everyone else involved that he was no longer interested in the relationship; this becomes massively important later on in the route, where unless the choice is made to have Chase explicitly tell Leo "it's over", the latter's possession-induced obsession goes into overdrive and leads him to accidentally drag Chase under the wheels of a train in an attempt to stop him from leaving.

Jerkass Has a Point: While Jenna's remark that Leo is "Just perfect for Echo" comes across as rather harsh, even Chase admits that the reveal which spurred the comment in the first place (namely, that Leo had once recorded himself having sex with a 14-year-old while still just shy of 18 years himself, just minutes before entering into a relationship with the then 15-year-old Chase) had left a bad taste in his mouth. Thankfully, she gets over the "Jerkass" part on the good ending for her route. Not so much in the bad ending.

This actually turns out to be something of a Subverted Trope however, as it's implied and later confirmed during Jenna's route that Flynn is still just barely aware of himself enough to recognise his old friends, to the point that he even listens to Jenna's commands when she pleads with him to save Micha when the gang is trapped in Brian's trailer, and again on her good ending when she stops him from killing Heather.

"The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jenna gives a pretty scathing one to Heather during the bonfire party because they used to be friends with the former helping the latter cope with her dysfunctional home life. Heather however took advantage of this and had Jenna constantly do favors for her until Jenna saw what she was doing and put an end to this while still trying to be a supportive friend. Which wasn't good enough for Heather so she started spreading rumors that Jenna was the town slut which got her bullied, lost a part-time job, and lost most of her friends except for the main cast. Jenna also berates Heather for constantly lying and gaslighting people while Playing the Victim Card to avoid taking any real responsibility for her actions or make any effort to better herself. This leaves Heather running out of the party in tears. Chase assumes this was something Jenna was thinking about for a long time considering how detailed and passionate her delivery was.

The good ending of Carl's route has everything turn out fine for Chase, Carl, Jenna, and Raven with them still maintaining a close and healthy friendship by the route's end. However it's stated that Leo, Flynn, and especially TJ had such traumatic experiences during the hysteria which changed their lives for the worse and are no longer speaking to their old friends. What happened to them specifically and where they ended up is not elaborated.

What Happened to the Mouse?: Routes where some of the main cast are Out of Focus in the end can result in little information given on what happened to them or where they are in the end. Similarly TJ's route ends with Chase killing Flynn and running away with TJ, making a pact to keep their secret safe. With Jenna leaving the trip early, Carl being in the hospital for a broken ankle, and Leo being absent for most of the ending; we never find out how they react to or cope with Flynn's death. Flynn's route switches to Flynn's POV near the end and the rest of the gang are out of focus after they escape from the lake. The route ends with Flynn's transformation and it's never stated if the gang manage to escape town or survive the hysteria. An optional epilogue taking place five years later does show that Chase and Leo made it out and the two haven't talked since. What happened to the rest of the gang isn't elaborated but it's safe to assume they escaped as well and are no longer on speaking terms with Chase either.

Asshole Victim: When the hysteria officially hits Echo during the route, the body of a local resident named Salem is brought to the crowd gathered outside the town hall as proof that supernatural threats are involved (as his eyes and chunks of his flesh were torn out by an unknown creature, with Flynn not noticing him at first). While the boars brutal death is treated as a horrific and tragic event In-Universe, near the end of the route it gets revealed that Salem was involved in aiding Brian with one of his murders (where the victim was barely alive and in misery, with Salem clearly enjoying watching him in his broken, helpless state while filming what is presumably his last moments). This in turn ends up making Salems death become Laser-Guided Karma.

Riddle for the Ages: It's never revealed who is truly responsible for leaving behind the treasure hunt clues the gang finds in seemingly impossible places . Chase believes that Flynn and Carl conspired together somehow, while TJ insists that it was Sydney; although given that TJ is seen under some kind of possession-induced trance by Chase at one point, seems to immediately pinpoint exactly where some of the clues are as they go along, and the real final clue is revealed to have been a childish scribble of Chase killing Sydney not dissimilar to the one TJ draws on the restaurant napkin early on, it's entirely possible that the true culprit was in fact TJ himself, consciously or otherwise.

"Test Your Strength" Game: Jenna and Leo compete with a high striker at Southwest Adventures. The game is heavily implied to be the "rigged" version, as Leo's attempts all end in failure, even when he strikes the target hard enough to cause the ground to shake, while Jenna is able to win the game in one round on her turn by simply striking the mallet in just the right place to send it to the top.

Cassandra Truth: Much of the conflict between Flynn and TJ regarding Sydney's death revolves around Flynn's refusal to take TJ at his word regarding the matter. Subverted when it turns out midway through Flynn's route he was right and TJ was leaving out key details of his account (although ironically it was to prevent further occurrence of this trope); and even when TJ tells the group the whole truth of what he saw, it soon becomes clear to the others that his interpretation of events missed over a key detail.

Regularly Scheduled Evil: Subverted in that the date itself is actually completely unimportant and it just happened to be coincidence that Chase and friends returned to Echo exactly 100 years after the previous mass hysteria incident; indeed, the epilogue for TJ's route reveals that, due to the events that occured, the hysteria incident did not occur during the present day for that route until 2 years later - which is implied to be the result of Chase making good on his promise to Leo earlier in the same route to return to the town one day to visit.

It is essentially our world with anthropomorphic animals, but the place names have alternate names for some reason. A fully comprehensive list can be found here, with notable examples including Pueblo for Arizona (or Utah?), Huxia for China and Southlands for Australia.

Hunting "Accident": Sydney's father was apparently killed in one of these and while the adults of the town, and Chase himself, believed that this was under suspicious circumstances a flashback from Sydney's point of view reveals that his father's death was actually a suicide and that Sydney actually tried to stop him.

Ghostly Gape: The monster that chases the protagonists when they attempt to leave town via vehicle in Leo and Flynn's routes is described this way, with Daxton likening it to a plug socket at one point when the gang discusses their previous sightings of it in Flynn's route.

Earn Your Happy Ending
 Echo (Visual Novel) / int_f64a9cf7

Happier Home Movie: Subverted; Carl and Chase watch a video of an old birthday which starts off like one of these, only for the good mood to take a sudden downturn when Sydney shows up, shutting it off completely after Carl's father holding the camera mutters about "the damn mormon kid" under his breath.
