DEATH BATTLE! is a web series hosted by Rooster Teeth (previously ScrewAttack until 2019), and presented by "Wizard" (Ben Singer) and "Boomstick" (Chad James). The point of the show is to take two similar characters from different universes and pit them against each other, analyzing their respective strengths and weaknesses to see who would win, similar to Deadliest Warrior. The series began releasing in 2010. The first 18 episodes were featured exclusively on ScrewAttack's YouTube account, and starting with episode 19 the series was posted to the redesigned screwattack.com, and now, roosterteeth.com, with a subscription allowing viewers to see it before it premieres on YouTube. Episodes 20-29 were animated by Mr. Lange, aka Short Factor (Jordan Lange), with episodes 29-onwards were done by a wide variety of animators such as 3-D animator Torrian Crawford (though since Season 7 he occasionally animated 3-D episodes), sprite and hand-drawn animator Luis Cruz (currently the animation director for the show), a group of SFM animators (DevilArtemis, Daitomodachi, Doovad Hohdan), and a variety of others including some guests. With the closure of Rooster Teeth in March of 2024, the fate of the series is up in the air, especially given both the nature of the series and the fact that, unlike properties like RWBY, Warner Bros. has not expressed interest in selling it. However, Singer and James are trying to find ways to keep the series alive. There is a character sheet for the combatants and hosts, as well as a recap page that lists the episodes. The official Twitter can be found here and the official Facebook can be found here. Have an idea for a matchup? You can suggest it here.

C. If a fighter ends up suffering Death of Personality, this will count as a loss for them even if their body is still intact.* Mewtwo can render Shadow a Blank Slate with his psychic powers, and the host notes it's difficult to win a fight when your opponent can erase everything that makes you 'you' from your memory* Ultron is more than capable of assimilating Sigma.* The Chosen Undead will eventually hollow out after numerous resurrections against the Person of Mass Destruction that is the Dovahkiin

B. Career Ending Injuries and depowering are ignored for the battle* Edward Elric gives up his alchemy at the end of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga* Both Might Guy and All Might are, in canon proper, at a point in their lives where Dented Iron is in full effect. Might Guy is wheelchair bound after a Heroic RRoD nearly killed him, and All Might is at 1/60th of his prime power after an injury forced him to pass on his Superpower Quirk, yet both are treated as though in their prime for the analysis* In canon, the Joker shot Barbara Gordon and paralyzed her from the waist down. She continued superheroics as Oracle, while her fight against Spider-Gwen treats the former as Batgirl in her prime* Star Butterfly ultimately destroys all magic including her own* Reverse-Flash's ultimate fate in his canon is losing his status as a Paradox Person and losing his memories to become the Nice Guy he used to be before his obsessions consumed him

B The animation at the end of the episode is nothing more than a fun little dramatization showcasing the fighters' abilities and does not influence the verdict, nor is it necessarily an accurate representation of how the fight would go if the combatants actually met. Because the animation is inconsequential to the analysis, it is thus allowed to show events that break any of the above rules for the simple reason of Rule of Cool.

The terrain chosen for the fight will be neutral territory. This is not a flat location with no distractions, but rather a location both fighters have experience fighting in. This becomes important if a character's skills use it.* Leonardo hiding in the shadows of New York.* Chun-Li/Mai wall-jumping.* Gaara/Toph using it as a primary means of combat. B. If the fight can't take place in neutral territory because it would render one of the combatants unable to exists in a fight-capable form there, it won't be* Darkseid cannot exist in his true form outside his own realm, and is thus relegated to fighting Thanos using one of his weaker avatars in Thanos's own universe. C. If a fighter has the ability (usually via teleportation) to change the environment into one specifically favorable to them, they'll be able to do so normally* Scorpion being able to teleport himself and Ryu to the Netherworld, which strengthens Scorpion while weakening those not native to the realm* The Flash can drag Quicksilver into the Speed Force where the former's powers further increase* Darkseid is more than capable of using his Boom Tubes to take Thanos to Fourth World where the Infinity Gauntlet does not work and Darkseid can exist in his true form* Po can use the Wuxi Finger Hold to take both himself and Iron Fist into the Spirit Realm.

DEATH BATTLE! (Web Animation) / int_7ef9fa03 | comment |
All consistent and canon sources available during the time of the episode's release will be examined by the hosts, Non-canon sources will be allowed only insofar as they do not conflict with canon* As stated with Goku. Expanded universes, like GT, are only allowed to be mentioned if they do not conflict with the original canon, like the Dragon Ball manga* The old Star Wars Expanded Universe was accounted for Luke Skywalker because the Luke vs. Harry Potter fight was produced about three years before Disney declared the original EU to be Alternate Continuity, and it was still accounted for the new Samus vs. Boba Fett fight one year after said declaration because it was produced 10 months before the release of The Force Awakens, which completely overwrites the post-Return of the Jedi timeline in which Boba Fett got a greater number of appearances. Characters with multiple incarnations, such as Link, Spider-Man, Deadpool, and Godzilla, will be composites combining the best aspects of their various incarnations, unless said incarnation is drastically different from other incarnations. If a specific incarnation of a character is chosen, the canon used will most likely be the most popular depiction* G1 Starscream, G4 Rainbow Dash, and post-Crisis Superman and Batman. The research will avoid biases. B. If one warrior is allowed abilities from a non-canon source, the other warrior must be allowed to use their own non-canon sources as well. C. Also, if a certain depiction of the warrior has them ridiculously overpowered or inconsistent* Shao Khan turning into a hydra in the live-action films, or powers that would be difficult to examine logically* pre-1986 Superman could destroy entire solar systems with a sneeze and could both "super-weave" and "super-shapeshift", then it will not be used. D. Not every weapon owned by the warriors in every canon will be used. Instead, only the ones they are commonly using or their best or most iconic weapons* Link and Cloud were equipped with their best armor and magic.* Raiden used the Murasama he gained at the end of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance rather than the weaker HF Blade he used for most of the game will be used. E. If a warrior originated from non-English language media, the English dub will not be used if it contradicts the original source in any way* Goku's abilities used the Japanese canon, not the English dubs and mistranslations — which, for sake of example, slowed down his Instant Transmission from being literally instantaneous regardless of distance to "just" allowing him to move at the speed of light. F. A piece of media that claims to be canon but clearly isn't will be avoided* For instance, the 1998 Godzilla film is not used to measure Godzilla's abilities because, as was shown in Godzilla: Final Wars, the monster Zilla is clearly not Godzilla. Also alternate forms of media might be avoided if they are inconsistent with the main media series* like Shao Khan's film depiction (where he can transform into a hydra). G. Because the warriors are examined by their prime per rule 4, they cannot use abilities that they canonically lost in their past before reaching said prime* ie how Shukaku was removed from Gaara or how Kratos, Spawn and Raiden gave up their divine immortality. H. invokedClaims made by fans will only be considered canon if the official franchise or character from an official source recognizes it as such.

Exactly What It Says on the Tin
DEATH BATTLE! (Web Animation) / int_8409a385 | comment |
A battle is to the Death, and the victor is the last combattant standing, regardless of who slayed the most combatants or whose matchups are otherwise favourable.* It is noted that a large part of Venusaur's loss comes as a result of his quadrouple weakness against Charizard's typing, despite Blastoise being ultimately declared the winner of their Battle Royale.note So far, only one episode have avoided this rule and its subrules: Deadpool vs. Pinkie Pie due to both of them using their knowledge of the fourth wall to decide they had better things to do. B. In cases where death is impossible or a single death is not sufficient to put a combatant out of commission for good, they must be rendered unable to continue the fight in the relevant planes of battle for the opponent to be declared the victor.* Starscream's spark is indestructible, but he is unable to meaningfully affect his opponent in this reduced state* Gods and similar characters left with no working mortal avatar to continue fighting with* Popeye possesses the ability to forcibly transform anyone into their constituent elements with a punch. C. If a fighter ends up suffering Death of Personality, this will count as a loss for them even if their body is still intact.* Mewtwo can render Shadow a Blank Slate with his psychic powers, and the host notes it's difficult to win a fight when your opponent can erase everything that makes you 'you' from your memory* Ultron is more than capable of assimilating Sigma.* The Chosen Undead will eventually hollow out after numerous resurrections against the Person of Mass Destruction that is the Dovahkiin D. If a character possesses a means to come Back from the Dead - whether by means of Resurrective Immortality, Expendable Clone, Me's a Crowd, Paradox Person, or other abilities - this will be treated as an exceedingly powerful Healing Factor, necessitating their opponent(s) find ways to counter these abilities within the rules of the battle itself - but this only applies if their method of cheating death is expedient enough for the one with the ability to conceivably return to the fight after their death(s).* The Chosen Undead will keep returning again and again until he hollows.* Rick has access to both Project Phoenix which uploads his conciousness to a ready body at the time of death, and a gun which implants his DNA in others, causing a fully-cognizent clone to Chest Burster out of the one who was shot.* Both Reverse Flash and Goku Black can die just fine, but because they are both protected from causality, that doesn't slow them down one bit. Otherwise, they may essentially lose the battle per point B of this rule since they are unable to continue the battle. * Discord is the Anthropomorphic Personification of Chaos and will always return as long as chaos exists, regardless of both his body and soul being destroyed, but there's nothing to suggest it would happen fast enough to keep fighting Bill Cipher in a timely manner. E. If neither combatant possesses a means to kill their opponent(s) per this rule and its addendums, the battle can be declared a draw. * Chuck Norris vs. Segata Sanshiro ended in a draw because it was ruled that absolutely nothing could kill, let alone injure, either of the combatants. Given that these two are invokedmemetic badasses, neither of them will even tire - and thus the battle will continue forever * Scooby Doo vs. Courage the Cowardly Dog ended this way as both combatants had shown themselves to be capable of being completely disintegrated and return within seconds no worse for wear, and they both lacked means to strike at other aspects of their opponent - like, for instance, the soul. This meant that while they could utterly disintegrate each other time and again - per point D of this rule, they'd pop right back within seconds and thus continue the fight until one or both of them tired out - but even then, tiring out is not a death, and thus no victor is declared.

C. The above also goes for summoning additional fighters to the battle, but these fighters must be directly at the control of the summoner and cannot act on their own accord.* Batman can summon bats using his gadgets* Zatana's magic can create simulacrums of her allies.* Bayonetta summons Madame Butterfly for many of her most powerful attacks.* Tony Stark is able to command more than one set of Iron-Man Power Armor at once.* Alucard has millions of souls at his direct command.* Steven Universe can create Watermelon Stevens on his own, but none of his possible fusees are allowed as they would all be outside help* the Dragonzord combining with the Triceratops, Sabertooth Tiger, and Mastodon Zords to form its Fighting Mode.

"Death Battle vs. The World" Result The Death Battle T-shirt wins against every other T-shirt in the world. This is mainly just a joke. And also to sell t-shirts. Aired between Episodes 13 and 14 of Season 1.

B. While fighters start out only with their standard kit, as defined by rule 5-D, if they possess a means to obtain, or summon, additional equipment at a moment's notice and without outside preparatory time or aid, then it is fair game for them to use it* Harry Potter can call upon his Firebolt Flying Broomstick using a magic spell he knows* Captain Falcon can call upon The Blue Falcon from anywhere, thanks to the reactor might under its hood* James Bond is never far from his remote-controlled Aston Martin, opponents may interfere with this if they are capable of doing so* It's mentioned that while Lobo could deduce Ghost Rider's weakness to holy weapons and was more than capable of speeding off to an intergalactic weapons shop for it, Ghost Rider could keep up with him if he tried, as his bike was faster.
