John Patrick "Jack" Douglass (b. June 30, 1988) is an American YouTube personality, comedian, entertainer, and musician who runs the YouTube channel Jacksfilms, which has become the home of several of his series. His best-known series used to be a weekly Long Runner called Your Grammar Sucks, where he reads aloud grammatically painful and typo-laden comments left on YouTube and Facebook. Amongst regular episodes, the series contained specials including skits and songs made entirely out of badly-written comments. The first "season" of YGS ended on November 20th, 2015 with its hundredth episode, a huge hour-long special. While YGS was in the later episodes of its first season, Jack started a series called Jackask wherein his fans asks him all sorts of questions. It also infrequently featured him asking his fans questions, which eventually became its own series Yesterday I Asked You, or YIAY. This series started on his second channel, but he brought it over to his main channel, where it has become wildly successful ever since. In essence, from Your Grammar Sucks, to Jackask, to YIAY, Audience Participation fuels these kinds of series. His series are as follows: PMS (Parodies, Music Videos, Sketches), which is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. GamerGod88, an occasional Let's Play-parody series revolving around a fictional gamer. YGS (Your Grammar Sucks), a series poking fun at grammatically inept Internet comments, and his second most well-known series to date. During its first season, it premiered every damn Friday. JackAsk, a sarcastic Q&A show which was retired in October 2020 until it was brought back in May 2021. YIAY (Yesterday I Asked You), previously a daily show, now broadcasted on Tuesdays and Thursdays, where Jack reads aloud fan-submitted answers to questions he poses to them. Is unique since it's his only series to start on his second channel and continue on his main channel (after 13 episodes). It is also his most well-known series to date, and is perhaps more widely recognized as the source of inspiration for PewDiePie's LWIAY (Last Week I Asked You), a less-than-subtle copy of Jack's series albeit with a different formatnote reviewing Reddit submissions rather than answers to a question. It has over 500 episodes, putting it ahead of most of Jack's other series, and has spun off other series such as Fake Facts and Fix Your Pics.Jack's main YouTube channel can be found here, along with his second channel, his third channelnote Which is an ongoing Take That! toward reaction YouTuber SSSniperwolf, and two old, unused behind-the-scenes channels. His (parodic) channel trailer can be watched here, and a slightly-outdated one can be seen here.He has also done acting, namely playing Intern 2 on the web series MyMusic. He and his wife Erin began a weekly (later changed to monthly) podcast in 2021 titled Erin Is The Funny One. He also made a Spiritual Successor to his YIAY series in the form of a video game adaptation titled Be Funny Now!, which can be played on Android, iOS and Steam. You can vote for your favourite video here.

The Artifact: As of 2021, the YIAY theme song, which goes "Leave your answers in the comments below, I'll pick my favorites in the next episode of YIAY." It still plays at the end of YIAY episodes despite Jack almost never asking viewers new YIAY questions in the YIAY videos themselves anymore (he instead asks questions and collects answers via the community tab) and no longer choosing the best answers himself (he outsources the answer selection to his "creative council" so he can be surprised on camera).

YouTuber Apology Parody
Jacksfilms (Web Video) / int_13e13b24 | comment |
YouTuber Apology Parody: In "My Apology", he apologizes for producing content and he gets annoyed when the video constantly fades to black. In response to Logan Paul's apology video, he made "i'm super sorry", where he repeatedly apologizes for doing increasingly offensive stuff. For Halloween 2018, he made his own apology video costume, which a kid later wore as a cosplay costume at VidCon 2019. In 2020, he made a Choose Your Own Adventure style game called "Choose Your Own Apology Video", with the goal to either get the absolute best or absolute worst reaction on the hypothetical video. For YIAY #555, he asked his fans to write an apology video one line at a time, and then read the script (which was produced by the moderators of his Discord) blindly. Said script, where he insincerely apologizes for setting fire to an orphan, includes healthy doses of blameshifting, several plugs to his merch store and padding of the runtime to reach the 10-minute mark.

Clickbait Gag | |
Jacksfilms (Web Video) / int_1d53cca0 | comment |
Clickbait Gag: The video "I Have Something To Tell You" has a thumbnail with Jack on the verge of tears and opens with him struggling to speak as he tries to admit something... before he says he created the video title and faked crying to emotionally manipulate the viewer into clicking the video. And then he raps about it. "The CLICKBAIT Game" has Jack list all of his fans attempts to make clickbait titles out of everyday situations like "I ate Chinese food." From prompts like that, we get divine listicles like "DOES CHINESE FOOD MAKE YOU GAY?", "MY BEARD GOT DRUNK (THREESOME!?)", and "why im shutting down my channel (not clickbait)." "YIAY #354" features fan-made thumbnails for the YIAY video, most of which exaggerate Clickbait staples, such as light nudity, giant red arrows, promises of face reveals, guilt-tripping, and the obligatory (not clickbait) text. The thumbnail that he loves the most is one that says "Youtube DELETING THUMBNAILS?", which he would've used for the video, but he didn't want to be sadistically manipulative. He instead used one he showed earlier in the video where his head is changed to a thumb; he admitted in the video that he'll probably end up using it for the episode instead of the manipulative one, but it was up to Jack in the future to determine if he'll use the manipulative one or be branded a coward: "Taking accountability" was named as such as part of the video's gimmick — a YIAY episode where the fans named the episode. Not only was "Taking accountability" the very first submission Jack reads out, but they found it so funny and such a good answer that every other submission was compared to it. Jack went ahead and used it, along with a serious thumbnail, which at the time, had no sign that it was a YIAY episode until the viewer clicked on it (it has since been amended with the normal YIAY suffix and episode number, but the thumbnail has remained the same).

Disappeared Dad: Referenced in Jackask #38, where most of the answers to his Twitter question (what do you want for Christmas?) are along the lines of "a dad"/"my dad to come home". Gets a Call-Back in the following week's PMS, "9 New Christmas Songs". And in "Top 10 Top 10 Lists'", when one of the "top 10 words from 2014 that should stay in 2014" is 'dad', and Jack adding "dads aren't even real". One YIAY question asked of fans was "How do you be a good dad?". Overuse of this trope in responses caused Jack to scrap the episode altogether.

Convenience Store Gift Shopping: A yearly occasion is "The Worst Christmas Gifts", in which every year since 2016 Jack showcases submissions of horrible Christmas gifts that his audience has gotten for Christmas. Contenders include Christmas decorations (which are useless until next year), gamer quote T-shirts, unofficial video game novels, "make a meme" card games, calendars for the same year they were received (eg. a 2020 calendar received on Christmas 2020), and a drawing book of pooping animals.

Jacksfilms (Web Video) / int_9dffef16 | comment |
Colbert Bump: invoked This is the concept behind the revamped JJJacksfilms "Creator Bingo", which has Jack react to and shout out smaller creators who send their work in for him to play bingo to. This process is supposed to mirror and satirize a common claim that internet content thieves make about how they're giving smaller creators more exposure, but in a way that actually credits the creators that Jack reacts to which (hopefully) allows them to actually get an increase in their channel numbers.

Overly-Long Gag: The first JackAsk in its entirety only consists of one question: "Are you gay?" Similarly, "JACKASK #23" consists entirely of people criticizing his mustache. Nepal's flag gets this unwanted treatment in one YIAY after angry Nepali viewers critically disliked "Top 10 Worst Flags in the World", an entirely tongue-in-cheek video that mocked several other flags as well.

Mood Whiplash | |
Jacksfilms (Web Video) / int_a4c37cbe | comment |
Mood Whiplash: Jack often uses these tropes to comedic effect, often overlapping with Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: In YGS: This expletive-filled, ranting YGS entry inexplicably ends with the words "I like that", and Jack reads it accordingly. YGS #88's final comment has this, lampshaded by Jack: In PMS: "YouTube Is Not a Job" has Jack defending his channel as a legitimate career choice to his family before they agree to watch a video of his to convince them that he does more than just "make cat videos". Cue Jack's supposed latest video, "Top Ten Farts". From "#ChristmasMiracle", "We'll cuddle by the Christmas tree/Doesn't matter if you're not 18!" In "Christmas is my favorite freaking holiday", the songs becomes intentionally offensivenote Intentionally so because it is being sung to Sean, a Jew, but then... Used near-constantly in the Kermit animations. From "9 New Christmas Songs": Candy canes, candy canes, lick 'em in a spear and kill your enemies! Stab (x16)-, and later, when ending the video: "Top 10 Top 10 Lists" has a few instances of this: 'Top 10 Songs' is comprised mostly of both real and fictitious pop songs from modern artists, before abruptly ending with #1 being "At Zanarkand" by Nobuo Uematsu. 'Top 10 Shades of Grey' ends with #1 being "my soul". And probably the biggest use comes from 'Top 10 words from 2014 that should stay in 2014', when the background music even cuts out when Jack reveals the number one word to be 'ebola'. Jack uses this trope in almost every episode of YIAY, ending with a somewhat thoughtful comment, immediately followed by a joke one. Sometimes, he just ends the video on the serious comment, although this trope is still in play.

Catchphrase | |
Jacksfilms (Web Video) / int_b01abe4f | comment |
Catchphrase: Since Your Grammar Sucks #1, he's used the word "biches" to refer to his fans. In fact, a lot of his Catch Phrases originated from Your Grammar Sucks. Quite a few of them also double as Running Gags. "That's almost a hundred..."Explanation: At various points throughout YGS' history, he's said something along the lines of "Episode X? That's almost a hundred!" Becomes an Ironic Echo when Jack does it in YGS #99. ":a what a fucke?!" Explanation Ever since this entry from episode 21, he's used this sound bit/video clip/quote whenever he comes across a particularly baffling comment. Behold, all of them. "Oh, Olga!" Explanation Fellow YouTuber/IRL friend Olga Kay, of Russian descent, has some trouble with the English language in written form (she's fluent in speech) despite having lived in the U.S. for quite a few years, and Jack features one of her comments every once in a while in an episode of YGS, followed by him exclaiming "Oh, Olga!" "Help me clean up YouTube! If you see an amazingly bad comment on the Internet, take a screencap of it and send it my way either via Twitter or my Facebook fanpage." Explanation His plug at the end of every episode for sending him possible YGS entries. He eventually turned it into a jingle. When he gets two contradicting comments in YIAY (ex: "fuck bitches get money", "get bitches fuck money"), he'll say "Which one do I believe?" "Me Me Big Boy!" was coined when Jack trolled a telemarketer by constantly repeating the phrase. Now it’s become a mainstay of his channel, with Jack even putting the phrase on a shirt.

Epic Fail: He once tried to prank call Toby Turner and say that his girlfriend was pregnant, with him not knowing what to do. Toby was watching the livestream he was doing this on, and Jack didn't bother checking to see if he could. Jack once spent five days attempting to recreate a Reddit stunt on YouTube by writing over 700 comments for one of his own videos... and never once realized that most of them would get buried after a few minutes, thus ruining the joke. He laments this in his next video. Guess the Wikihow Article is basically Jack doing one long string of incorrect wikihow article guesses from out-of-context images from genuine articles. Of the 36 his council picked for him to read, he got 13 right (four of which were close enough to the real answers the editor let them have the point).

Take That! | |

Take That!: A merciless parody of Taylor Swift’s songs basically has sad groaning as lyrics and the actress playing Taylor making pained expressions in the video. From Bro 90 X: In his Vsauce parody, he discusses a unit of measurement in music that our bodies reject once we listen to it. He calls the unit "biebs". He also says that Nickelback songs have many, many biebs, and that is why people who listen to them feel like committing suicide. In one of his JackAsk videos, he says that everyone has listened to Linkin Park at some time in their life, but then something clicks in their mind and they say, "Wow. What the fuck am I doing?" His video, I NEED TO HOST =3. "But what if it were funny?" This episode of JackAsk has a particularly sharp dig at Sam Pepper, a YouTuber who was at the time being investigated for sexual abuse. Subsequent episodes also took sharp digs at him. TubeNews is essentially a giant one to Drama Alert and Keemstar's desire to milk drama for all it's worth on YouTube. He parodies Logan Paul's infamous apology video after he found and filmed the dead body of a Japanese man who hanged himself in a forest known for being a site of suicides, where Jack apologizes to his audience for doing increasingly weird and criminal things. Loud YouTubers has Jack be on a fake reaction show listening to loud YouTuber intros, with wind blowing into him when the intros start. "$10,000 DOG VS. $1 DOG", which sees Jack pretending to treat his dogs as if they're electronic gadgets, including shaking them inside their boxes and poking a knife into one of the boxes, has Jack proclaim at the end that the video is sponsored by PETA.

Berserk Button: Jack tends to react badly when particularly bad comments get a high amount of likes. It's taken to its logical conclusion in YGS 57, where his reaction to a particularly bad comment getting an absurd amount of likes is to angrily lunge at the camera. He is also not a fan of Ray William Johnson, although he has made it clear that he respects Ray's ability to get people such as Robin Williams into his videos, and would also try to keep conversation polite despite not liking his work. One made apparent by JackAsk is when people submit incredibly random questions in attempts to sound funny, citing the rule that "RANDOM doesn't always equal FUNNY"- especially made clear in JackAsk #10.

Fun with Acronyms: The mainline content is classified as Parody, Music Videos and Sketches. What's the grab-all term for them? PMS. His advertisements at the end of the Jackask videos and some of the PMS episodes use this as a Running Gag, making a company's name (most commonly Audible's) into an acronym. Finally lampshaded and defied in #38: One video's premise was meant to be the opposite of YGS, "Your Grammar's Awesome", or "YGA". On its own, "YGA" doesn't mean anything, but he deliberately made the logo loop continuously around the backdrop of the video, running together into "G AY".

Jacksfilms (Web Video) / int_c75df49a | comment |
Shout-Out: One comment in Your Grammar Sucks #48 is most certainly a reference to My Music. Another one in #49 attempts to sum up Doctor Who, which works as well as you'd expect. In Jack's "dream interpreting" episode of YIAY, he came across a comment that described a dream where a satellite came down and crashed on someone's house. Jack gave two explanations: they had Instagram haters, or they've been watching Donnie Darko. Another dream was that someone was a dragon who got hungry and ate their own family. Jack explained that this represented the dreamer's Appetite for Destruction..."which is the best Guns N' Roses album". The single best answer from every YIAY ever has the number of the episode be in a different logo style every 100 episodes; such as a parody of DC Comics's circle and stars. "$10,000 DOG VS. $1 DOG" has a segment where Jack attempts to test the dogs' ability to play fetch titled "Will It Fetch?", an obvious parody of Will It Blend? To This Very Wiki when showing a well-known trope of disappearing dads.

Self-Deprecation: Approximately 80% of comments featured in YIAY are direct insults to him. At least one of those was by his parents. Olga Kay showed up in person in YGS #40 to acknowledge her poor grammar skills. In his "acceptance speech" YIAY episode, one commenter stated that they would thank Jacksgap for being the only successful Youtuber named Jack. Jack himself then disproves this... by stating that there's also Jack Septic Eye. Jack lists a group of fellow YouTubers who could beat him up, and they include Link, Tyler Oakley, and Marzia. At the YIAY Live Show, Jack gives out copies of his book as prizes.

Dude, Not Funny!: Jack's reaction to serious comments in YIAY will actually be more of a "dude, not UNfunny" sort of thing, since Jack will seem very shocked by the comment and might even tell the commenter to calm down, stating that YIAY is a comedy show. In one episode of YIAY, Jack read off some answers that viewers gave him of book sequels they'd like to see. One answer was The Diary of Anne Frank: Anne Goes to Hollywood. Jack reacts with, "That's awful," though he does hide a smile.

Precious Puppy: Jack owns three adorable toy American Eskimo dogs named Klondike, Sundae, and Chipwich, and loves to show them off for the sake of cuteness. Klondike was introduced in the 59th YGS episode (in September 2013), Sundae was introduced in the 230th YIAY episode (at the start of 2016), and Chipwich was introduced in the 501st YIAY episode (near the end of May 2020). As a fun fact, as stated by Jack, Sundae and Chipwich are biologically sisters - this is because Sundae's mom and dadnote named Chloe and Glacier respectively had a second litter. Before this, Jack had Sammy in his earlier videos.

Brick Joke: In "Escape the Friendzone" (YIAY #89), one commenter leaves an answer to the question from YIAY #88 (superhero names and powers) instead: Jack uploaded a video on jackisanerd called My shot glass collection (part 1 of 2) which was used for Every Leafyishere video ever, in which GamerGod88 briefly mentioned that it will have a part 2. That part 2 is the majority of his 1000th video special Throughout 2019, Jack had posted the phrase "Twitter for Android" on his Twitter, while interspersing the tweets with seemingly unrelated phrases on certain days. One year and three days later, Jack uploaded Twitter for Android, a song that turns the unrelated words into a piano piece. In "Fix Your Pix #4," Jack struggles to fix a picture of a man in a trenchcoat and a fedora, other than putting a sign in his hand saying, "One at a time, ladies." He notes that they'll come back to the trenchcoat guy in a little bit. Sure enough, a few images later, he "fixes" a picture of a woman who said her husband pointed out cross-eyes in her photo. Jack instead gives the girl Fish Eyes...and adds an image of the trenchcoat guy, declaring that it's the girl's husband coming back, and photoshopping his sign to say "HOORAY! You're no longer cross-eyed! I love you now!"
