Two Best Friends Play was a Web Original comedy series found on the Machinima YouTube channel.The series was an MST of sorts; two friends named Matt and Pat play video games, argue, and mock the game they are playing and each other. The series does not focus on the two friends; they weren't even named until the second season. According to the show's Facebook page, it started when The Switcher (Matt) invited his friend Snapshot King (Pat) over to play Kirby's Epic Yarn and record themselves taking their playthrough way too seriously.The videos are edited so the audience only sees highlights of their gaming session; they are around ten to fifteen minutes long. The friends also have a spin-off show called TBF: Funtime Adventures, an animated show about discussions the two have about games when not playing them.Since its inception, the concept of "Two Best Friends" has expanded to the "Super Best Friends Zaibatsu", with the inclusion of additional friends Woolie and Liam. Pat: Streams on Twitch as Pat Stares At. On occasion, he also joins his fiancée Paige's streams at her channel, PeachSaliva. Archives from their streams are re-posted on YouTube. Woolie: Established WoolieVersus as both a YouTube and Twitch channel. Hidden Depths: Despite his constant swearing, Pat is well-read and educated. This really shines through for both of them, as well as Woolie, during their commentaries on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metroid: Other M. When not making jokes, they discuss themes and writing with a shocking amount of depth and eloquence. During him and Woolie's Deadliest Warrior competition, Matt makes a lot of his usual jokes, but offhandedly confirms that he does in fact know who Hannibal is by using his somewhat obscure last name. Pat is a certified minister in a number of states. Though by Pat's own admission, that doesn't really mean much as he was offered by chance a form that would certify him if he filled it out, which he did for kicks. Matt attended art school and it shows at times. Pat also apparently took psychology in college according to their Silent Hill: Homecoming playthrough. All of them are fluent in French, since they noticed a lot of awkward translations in Heavy Rain from the original French script. This was more surprising when Matt and Pat pretended to be American instead of Canadians from Montreal. Liam is presented as the guy who likes creepy anime starring little girl protagonists for most of the videos he's in or even by the others when he's not there. It's enough to say that even the other Best Friends were surprised to find out that he's an experienced hunter during the podcast. Strangely enough both of these traits would be the subjects of his spin-off shows with Matt. Matt used to be a high-ranking game tester for No More Heroes and other games. The Silent Hill: Downpour Let's Play is like this as well, with offhand conversations of past Silent Hill games, as well as the usual offtopic discussions, being common. This is part of the reason they refuse to Let's Play their favorite games such as Resident Evil 4, because the wouldn't have anything to say about the game besides obvious compliments. Subverted when they started a playthrough of Resident Evil 4 HD. Matt explains the plot of Kane and Lynch to Pat during the ladder sequence in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Stunned Silence: Being that they're offscreen, it's fairly ambiguous, but there was a moment of silence during Kane and Lynch and Disaster: Day of Crisis which had both friends completely silent as opposed to their normal behavior, probably to play up how ridiculous the game was at that moment. There's another one during Heavy Rain, when in contrast to them talking loudly over the prologue, they sit silently and watch Ethan's sad life until Matt calls Ethan a loser. Another in Shadows of the Damned: Matt hears a noise, then begins looking around for it. He turns the character to see dozens of severed heads rolling down the hill toward him. Both guys watch in silence before quitting the game. In the Beatdown Fists of Vengeance video, the two encounter an enemy NPC on the street and pick the option to rob him. However, rather than needing to fight the character for the money or having any kind of resistance, the sequence turns into a curious scenerio of their victim saying "You say you need money? I'll try anything once.", only for the screen to cut to the player's wallet showing their monetary value slowly increasing. Catchphrase: Probably the most famous of Matt's is "America!" when he sees something patriotic or sometimes just at random. This has actually been toned down since the early days of the show, but references to the concept still pop up, and Matt's character background will forever be red, white and blue, despite the boys being Canadian. "You LOVE it!" used by either when the other complains about an aspect of the game. "He loves it!" - a variation usually said by Matt when an enemy in a video game doesn't react at all to whatever weapon or tactic is being used on them. "I made ze bad game." It was first used by Pat in Indigo Prophecy and was picked up by Matt later in the same LP and which he carried over into Beyond: Two Souls. "This game is for babies!" Said mockingly by Matt when someone's having trouble with an E-rated game. "Excuse me, sir." said by Pat in their The Evil Within playthrough whenever an enemy interrupts him in the middle of doing something. Lampshaded later in the LP when Pat realises just how often he says it. "Girls are watching" Said by Matt whenever a member of the Zaibatsu is engaged in difficult gameplay or messing up. Pat has another phrase he tends to say at random moments: "Ruh-roh". Ever since encountering Onionsan, Matt has actively picked up the monster's use of the phrase "Big Favorite." Epic Fail: Matt "failing everything" in Dead Rising 2. Pat's LP of The Last of Us is (in)famous for this. He dies at least once per video, he constantly misses plot critical items, and in general makes a complete fool of himself on more than on occasion. In fact, the questionable quality of the LP quickly became a Running Gag in future videos. His LP of Resident Evil 4 also went this way, to the point where the TBFP wiki was keeping a running count of his deaths and epic fails, everything from missing treasure to accidentally shooting Ashley (twice!). Woolie has had a number of these in Dark Souls II, mostly from getting turned around (while they're attempting to head back to Things Betwixt he repeatedly turns around to head back towards Majula for no reason) or, in the case of Part 54, he attempts to fight Royal Sorcerer Navlaan (who has a lot of very powerful Dark spells that can kill you very quickly) two handed, without his shield. Needless to say he dies multiple times before just saying "Screw it" and doing everything he can to avoid fighting Navlaan again. Pat and Liam's full LP of Super Mario RPG. How bad is it? It took them seven episodes to figure out there is a RUN button. Pat running the playthrough of XCOM 2 on Commander difficulty, with Ironman enabled. He only succeeds in a single mission (the very first one), and every other mission ends with the objectives failed and usually only a single survivor on Pat's squad (and sometimes not even that). He barely has enough resources to sustain his research and replace his losses, and the campaign ultimately ends with the completion of the Avatar Project. He even had zero damage dealt to an enemy at one point (he was too weak to complete a vital black site mission, so he tried a crash and grab that failed). While Matt manages to do pretty well and ultimately manages to get Kara and Alice out alive in Detroit: Become Human, the same cannot be said for Pat and Woolie. Pat constantly ends up getting Connor killed, tanking his affinity with Hank, and his attempts to get into Hank's good graces usually fall flat on their face, ultimately culminating in Pat ending Connor's story in a literally unwinnable life or death situation due to failing to get enough affinity with Hank to learn about Cole. Meanwhile, Woolie's constant cowardice and refusal to take risks leads him to constantly cripple Jericho's power, turn the public against the revolution, and make Markus make an utter fool of himself to the other revolutionaries, ultimately culminating in getting Markus gunned down during the Freedom March, dooming the revolution. This ended up being such a colossal fail that the trio decided to replay the game entirely (a first for the channel) in the hopes of getting a better ending. Pat's failure is especially noteworthy as only 1% of all players managed to get the ending he did. | |

During the XBox Live Indie Games 4 video, while playing yet another crappy platformer: Episode 3 of the full Disaster LP has a moment where Pat worries about whether or not if the guys have "become sellouts" because they've started selling merchandise, and Matt stating that they really haven't because they're not doing something like doing a sponsored LP of the Dead Space 3 demo, basically taking a jab at all of the Lets Players who were a part of EA's infamous Dead Space 3 marketing tactic. They also say it'd seem more like they were selling out if they happened to LP every generic military FPS game released on the market, specifically name dropping Battlefield (which they already made fun of in their Persona 4 video). In part nine of their Metal Gear Rising Revengeance series, they make more than a few jabs at DarkSydePhil. The third Xbox Live Indie Games episode ends with a "scorecard" evaluating all the games they covered. Several have glowing reviews attributed to well-known websites and critics, the implication that they all have terrible judgment. Audience Participation: A week before the Street Fighter III video went up the friends put a message on their Facebook page telling them at what time on Friday they would be playing and inviting everyone to join. The online matches make up the middle part of the video. Ditto for Soulcalibur V. During the Indie Games II vid, Pat tells everyone to put pictures of Basking Sharks on the Facebook fan page. In the next week's video, Mass Effect 3 he urged the fans to stop because they did it far too much. A Facebook poll helped fans pick which game would be featured in a TBFP. Slender was chosen, much to Pat's rage. After the success of the SBFW of Metroid: Other M, they put up a Facebook poll with other possible games to watch, including Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Deadly Premonition. Also in the poll was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which was apparently put in as a joke. Sure enough, it won, much to the chagrin of Matt, Pat, & Woolie. After they teased Aliens: Colonial Marines as their next game in one video, many posts were made telling them they didn't need to play it. They acknowledged this and then played the game because people said not to play it. When Matt got a new cat, he decided to let the fans put it to a vote what they should name him. Matt goes particularly nuts during Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and eventually just starts punching out and stabbing everyone, culminating with telling Megan's mother about how her daughter died horribly and painfully followed by punching her in the face. Years later, when they make the game a full Let's Play, Pat mercilessly executes people he knocks out for their loot. note This doesn't actually net any more loot. He even does this to civilians for a while, only stopping (mostly) when Matt points out that civilians don't have anything to steal. Late in the Sleeping Dogs (2012) episode, a girl they've been dating in the game breaks up with them because she found out they've been cheating on her. Cut to them throwing her down a flight of stairs. After accidentally killing a cat in Assassin's Creed III, Pat goes nuts and stabs a pig, a lady, and punches a beaver. In Beyond: Two Souls, Pat makes a point of choosing what he considers as the worst options in order to see how far the game will let him go. Brick Joke: Early on in the Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks video, they established that unlike some of the other games they have played co-op, they actually are working together and can't kill each other. Matt points out that they'll probably find a way to kill each other later. Sure enough, they did. In the Funtime Adventures episode Draw or Die, Pat mentions that anything could be in the void him and Matt fall into, including "mummified lobsters." Three guesses as to what ambushes them at the end of the video. In Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2013, Matt and Pat argue over whether hippos are rad or not. Guess what kills them when Pat decides to run through a marsh near the end of the video... In part 34 of their Dark Souls II LP, Pat tells Woolie the "Dark Souls way" to play is to kill every NPC to get their drop items when you finish the game and start New Game+. Right after finishing the game, Woolie murders every NPC in Majula. In the second episode of the Bloodborne playthrough, Pat and Woolie get killed by the lone Executioner in Yharnam. Three episodes later, the boys decide to get revenge by testing out their newly acquired Kirkhammer on it. They kill the Executioner successfully and, because they hadn't died again up to that point, end up getting all their stolen Blood Echoes back that they previously forgot about. | |
