Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Xonic S is an abridged series of Sonic X from KyoSo. It is Reputable Dubbing Pictures' second series after Sonic the Other Movie. The six episodes so far can be found on the series playlist on YouTube.Well, three of them can't because YouTube blocked them. Episode 1 can be found here, 2 here and 5 here on the series' DailyMotion channel.Xonic is noteworthy for its Hidden Depths Character Development, allowing the interaction and exploration of its warped ensemble cast to become almost more of a focus to the series than even parodying Sonic X. Tails in particular has shown the most fleshing out, the fourth episode even throwing out the source material's plot in favor of an elaborate story driven by his unique characterization.Sonic and his friends are the stars of a popular franchise, though they bear little resemblance to their video game counterparts: Sonic is the Cloud Cuckoolander, Pollyanna, wannabe comedian with the attention span of squirrel (who might be a secret genius); Tails is His Own Worst Enemy, a self-loathing Shameless Self-Promoter Driven by Envy of Sonic's skills and popularity; Knuckles is the calm voice of reason, a complete inversion of the hot-headed Knuckles of canon; Amy is a borderline Yandere who sees Tails as nothing more than a rival for Sonic's affection; and Dr. Eggman is the Affably Evil Lord Robotnik, ruler of a feudal micronation within Missouri known as Robotnikslovakia. All his robots and defenses are purely protection against the harassment of Sonic, who regularly shows up to trash his stuff for no good reason.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })After Sonic invades the Robotnik Collosus Make-up Factory (for Women), a freak accident involving a chaos emerald results in the city of Branson being teleported on top of them. The city now legally falls under the control of Lord Robotnik, who soon takes control. After a run in with the police and even Fast Flenderson of the Federal Bureau of Car, Sonic decides to lay low for a while with his self-proclaimed biggest fan, Chris Selfenzert. Chris is an emotionally stunted Fan Boy with a strange accent that can't be placed who values Sonic above all else in his life. In fact, he cares so little about the rest of the characters he refers to Tails only as "the Fox".The Shout Out section is so big it's been moved to its own tab.

Editing Works: Of course. The show's writer has expressed that the first episode was written more as a direct attempt to address major flaws of their earlier work (particularly things like slow pacing), whereas the second was when the show began to find its own identity.

Heroic BSoD: A light example. Pollyanna Sonic loses his shit after Tails spends the entire episode trying to beat the tar out of him, and even after he goes out of his way to try and make Tails feel better the fox still essentially says "Screw you," to everyone and runs off with Knuckles' body.

Xonic S (Web Video) / int_14beeefd | comment |
Darker and Edgier: Despite being a parody, the series occassionally dips its feet into treating things seriously. Episode 2 feels this way compared to the first one thanks to playing the danger to Sonic and Cream as completely legitimate, with compulsive wise-cracker Sonic of all people even asking Cream to knock off the jokes during the worst of it. However the overall episode is no less humorous than the first one. Episode 6 later delves into this territory with Tails, portrarying him in a much more sympathetic light and showing a lot of his issues to be caused by the way Sonic treats him. Especially in contrast to Episode 4, in which he appeared to be the aggressor toward Sonic.

Character Development: For as one dimensional as Sonic may have seemed in Episode 1, after four episodes he's clearly got a lot going on under the hood. Despite seeming to have no attention span at first, Sonic is able to take charge and save people with a laser focus when they're truly in danger, and is eventually revealed by Episode 4 to be a secret genius marred by his severe ADHD. Nothing compared to Tails, though, who has gone from being a showoffy version of his Sonic the Other Movie portrayal to the chaotic neutral bipolar attention whore who will go to insane lengths to compensate for his own lack of self-worth.

The Stinger: Usually an outtake from the episode, in which the VA says something ridiculous in character. Early-Installment Weirdness
Xonic S (Web Video) / int_4f4372e9 | comment |
Early-Installment Weirdness: The first episode feels fairly different from the rest of the series. A lot of this can be attributed to the source material itself being so different from the other episodes, but there are some key differences. The humor is Denser and Wackier, more focused on individual gags and especially references than the character interplay that defines most of the series. Again, part of this is because the episode focuses on Sonic running around just bouncing off of antagonists. The pacing is lightning fast, with the overall episode running two minutes shorter than the next shortest (the third) and a full five minutes shorter than the longest (the sixth). Arguably more like six minutes considering the first episode's credits are much longer and are followed by an extended stinger. Knuckles is given a thick Southern accent that is dropped by his next appearance, although a toned down version of the dialect remains to an extent. Sonic's personality very exaggerated and flat compared to his much more rounded portrayal in the second episode and onward, which we only begin to see a glimpse of in the final scene when he meets Chris.

Character Exaggeration: Played straight and subverted depending on who you look at. All the characters have changed and developed from their personas on the series' predecessor Sonic the Other Movie. Knuckles in particular is intended to be a complete subversion of his hot-headed canon persona.

Cutaway Gag | |
Xonic S (Web Video) / int_961c6c22 | comment |
Cutaway Gag: Infrequently used, but used well. After Sonic mentions Cream owns four copies of his album, we get short excerpt of said standup album in which Sonic breaks the microphone trying to make sure it's correctly plugged in. As Knuckles complains about "being stuck in this hellhole" (Branson), a "Missouri Welcomes You" sign briefly appears over the word "hellhole". Episode 4 utilizes one during the big halfway point Info Dump to convey some further exposition in a concise and amusing way. Episode 5 turns this trope up to eleven, with two cutaways in the same scene. One is the setup of a Brick Joke involving Big the Cat. Episode 6 has Tails recall the beginning of Wing Fortress Zone in Sonic 2, in which he gets shot down in the Tornado.

Leitmotif: Despite having very limited original scoring compared to use of existing music, Xonic S's specially composed music utilizes this. Tails in particular is represented by remixes of his Adventure era theme song "Believe in Myself" and Eggman's theme is a mixture of his themes from Japanese Sonic X and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Take That! | |
Xonic S (Web Video) / int_b53077b3 | comment |
Take That!: Frequent enough to probably become its own page down the line. In Episode 1: Episode 2: Sonic shouts, "Oh shi-" at which the 4Kids logo appears over his face and a completely different voice dubs over him, flatly saying "darn." A man implied to be Ken Penders is at the airbase in Episode 2. After a computer announces "Welcome, Dr. Penders," to him, he accuses it of trying to steal his name. Episode 3 has several: When Knuckles loudly proclaims, "We wouldn't be stuck in this hellhole if that airheaded hedgehog hadn't trashed Lord Robotnik's keep!", a sign reading "Missouri Welcomes You" briefly appears over the word "hellhole". The "Burn-man" exchange is a subversion of the infamously punchline-free Burnbot routine from Sonic Boom, something Sonic the Other Movie had previously taken a shot at. Episode 4: Surprisingly absent, although the episode is far more character and story-driven than the others. Episode 5: Chris' dad is Aaron Webber, head of Sonic PR (its social media pages included), who only speaks in broken English promoting Modern Sonic and bashing the older games. His wife translates this into English. Eggman takes a shot at states that teach Creationism in school as he prepares to send his robotic teacher to take over.

Xonic S (Web Video) / int_c3ae004a | comment |
Re-Cut: Episode 2, released in January 2017, ended up being pulled in early 2019 due to the use of the song Lowrider by the band War. The situation was taken advantage of to bring the quality of the editing up to par with the most recent episodes, being upscaled to 720p (bringing it in line with 3 and onward, a major visual boost to added graphics like Sonic's comedy album cover), the volume mixing improved (to the massive benefit of the stairwell scene), and general tightening to improve the pacing (namely cutting the Fraiser-style caption, a joke that actively hurt the audience retention and wouldn't make any sense unless you got the reference).

Once per Episode: Several. A classic rock song, although this has transitioned to Sonic-related songs after the pulling of Episode 2 over the use of Lowrider. Sonic game quotes, mainly from Adventure, A voice clip of Ryan Drummond's Sonic yelling "Woah!", known primarily from the approaching avalanche in Ice Cap Zone, which has been in every episode except the 5th.

Xonic S (Web Video) / int_f1d3f0c9 | comment |
Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: The series can feature some pretty verbose dialogue, though this has also been used for comedic effect; see Antiquated Linguistics, above. Sonic's ridiculously expansive vocabulary in Episode 4 is an especially intense example, and maintained throughout the majority of the episode. Word Of God was wall too eager to note that said dialogue was written entirely without the use of a thesaurus or outside research.

Fun with Subtitles: In the first two episodes. Fraiche's exclamation of "Chao chao!" is subtitled with "Chao chao!" Cream exlcaims "I can't believe you saved me, Sonic!" in Manadarin Chinese. The subtitles helpfully misidentify it as Japanese.
