LoliRock (2014-2017) is an animated Magical Girl series produced by French company Marathon Media (also known for Totally Spies! and Martin Mystery) and co-produced by Zodiak Kids in association with Disney Channel France. The show follows Iris (Kazumi Evans), an ordinary teenage girl whose beautiful singing voice causes strange occurrences to happen around her. After being rescued by two other teenage girls named Talia (Ashleigh Ball) and Auriana (Tabitha St. Germain), whom she met earlier at an audition for the eponymous Girl Group, she learns from them that she is actually a princess from a magical kingdom called Ephedia, which has been taken over by Gramorr (Mackenzie Gray) as she was sent away to Earth as an infant to be kept safe from him. To save her kingdom, she must now hone her newly-discovered magical powers with their help as they are tasked to locate and recover the Oracle Gems before Gramorr and his underlings, Praxina (Kelly Sheridan) and Mephisto (Vincent Tong), find them. All the while maintaining their Masquerade as young Idol Singers on Earth and helping out the locals along the way.The music aspect is used heavily in marketing, with five music videos per season released outside the show. The title itself comes from the name of the band itself, and according to an interview on the official site, it’s a play on "LOL," "i" as in the Spanish conjunction "y" meaning "and", and "rock."As of March 2022, both the first and second seasons of the show are available for streaming through Netflix and Prime Video. Through an Instagram post by show creator Jean-Louis Vandestoc, a third season is currently in the works.

In "Xeris", Talia sneaks out of her home to attend a party. As she's gone, Gramorr attacks and cripples Xeris and presumably kills her parents while utterly defeating Izira, who is not at her full strength because she gave Talia her medallion. When Talia returns home, having had a good time, Xeris is in ruins, and once she realizes what happened to her family, she breaks down in tears. The very same thing happened in Dragonball Evolution, only the survivors were killed.

Single-Stroke Battle: Happens a couple times in the series. In "A Promise is a Promise" Talia and Auriana perform this on Praxina. While Prax is visibly harmed, she laughs it off as a No-Sell. Happens twice in "Desert Heat". A non-sword example with Talia and Praxina. Talia prepares to attack Praxina with a spell, only for Praxina to attack first and imprison her in a bubble. The second time is similar to "A Promise is a Promise", where Iris and Talia perform one on a Scorpion Monster. The Monster falls.

There's also two unknown regions with yellow and red magic, based on other characters we see. Colour Coded Magic: Again, pink for Ephedia, orange for Volta, blue for Xeris, purple for Calix, green for Borealis. Comic-Book Adaptation: Four episodes have been adapted into bande dessinée-style comics: "To Find a Princess," "Batty," "Sirens" and "Shanila Surprise." They were illustrated by Marco Albiero, are amazingly faithful to the show's art style, and are incredibly hard to find, especially the first and last volumes. Also, they were only released in French.

What Happened to the Mouse?: At the end of "Heavy Metal" (episode 17 of the first season), Mephisto successfully gets an Oracle Gem. It doesn't show up again, nor is it mentioned, until the second season. Mephisto's staff from "Lucky Star" wasn't destroyed, but it hasn't been used since, either. With his death in the Season 2 finale, it will never be used again.

Wizards Live Longer: Ephedians live longer and age slower than humans. According to the official blog, this is due to their ability channel Crystal Magic and the sheer amount of it on their home planet. **Which puts Aunt Ellen's distress at discovering she has greying hair on her birthday into perspective. Because she lives with Iris in Earth's magically deprived atmosphere, she ages faster than she would on her Ephedia. The Queen of Ephedia herself hasn't changed a bit in the 15 years she was held prisoner and they were about the same age. Strangely, her wrinkles disappear when she transforms, even on Earth, so maybe Crystal Magic has a rejuvenating effect.

Didn't Think This Through: In "I Want My LTV", the girls, who are trying to make a music video, stumble across Mephisto and Praxina who are trying to film a music video. While it's lampshaded that it's suspicious, the one thing that sticks out is that they ask for them to remove their jewellery during filming. And the girls need these jewellery. Let that sink in for a minute.

Shout-Out
 LoliRock / int_c75df49a
comment
Shout-Out: Usagi Tsukino (as a little girl) and The Nostalgia Critic can be seen in the background of a few episodes for brief moments, that you won't really notice if you're not looking for them. In "Castles in the Sand", the magic words used by Mephisto to control the monster are "Klaatu Barada Nikto". Mephisto himself is named after the demon in Faust. In "Dance Craze", at the Halloween Party, there's someone dressed as Link. In "The Haunting", some of the Dragon Balls can be seen in Ella's things. In "Musical Magical Tour", Carissa references a sport called "Ephedian Blitzball", and the gameplay she describes sounds like Quodpot (or, America's answer to Quidditch). The title of the episode is, of course, a reference to The Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour. In "Wicked Red", it's possible that the brainwashing shampoo Auriana and Amaru use is one to Kim Possible. Lev's last conversation with Iris is nearly word-for-word taken from Anastasia: Iris turns back time in "Princess Brenda Part II" and uses her knowledge from the alternate timeline, where Nathaniel finds out her secret, to set things right. This is one to The Flash in "Out of Time" and "Rogue Time" where Barry does the same thing. Special bonus to both series having a character named Iris, and the identity revelation involves Barry revealing his secret to Iris West while Iris reveals her identity to Nathaniel. In "Sirens", the Princesses reach a sunken ship to rescue a character who had previously been there. After they fill the ship with air, that character asks them how they did that. Iris states that it was really complicated and that they had to use ping-pong balls. This is a reference to a Donald Duck story by Carl Barks, where a sunken ship was raised by lowering a hose from the surface and pumping it full of ping-pong balls. A couple of the English episode titles are music references: "I Want My LTV" is 'I Want My MTV', "No Thanks for the Memories" from Fall Out Boy's "Thanks for the Memories", "Strawberry Fields for Never" is from "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles, "Musical Magical Tour" again The Beatles "Magical Musical Tour", "Stop in the Name of Lev" is from "Stop in the Name of Love" by The Supremes, "Talia and Kyle Sitting in a Tree" is from a popular kids' song.

Suspiciously Specific Denial: Comes up whenever anyone comes remotely close to learning about The Masquerade. Especially awkward whenever the muggle is already laughing at the absurdity of what another character (usually Auriana) says, and Bad Liar Iris still feels the need to ensure the other person thinks Auriana is joking.

Mundane Utility: What do you do with magic borne of music and crystal-generating powers? Why, use it in lieu of expensive special effects during concerts! Outside of their concerts and crime-fighting, the girls also use their crystals in mundane manners such as umbrellas.

Symbol Motif Clothing: In addition to Color-Coded for Your Convenience, each kingdom (and by extension, princess) has a symbol that is found on their clothing (including the non-royal people) — a Pink Heart Symbol and a red, pink, or white four-pointed star (red on the King) for Ephedia, an orange crescent moon for Volta, a green Fleur-de-lis for Borealis, blue diamonds for Xeris, and a purple compass rose for Calix. The villains have an animal motif (except for Kakos and Deinos): Mephisto (green snake), Praxina (red butterfly) and Lev (yellow bird).

Shown Their Work: The magic spells are not complete gibberish. They have legitimate Latin roots, words or even phrases. They might not be pronounced or declined correctly, but if you read the subtitles, they're there, especially with the longer spells from the twins.
