Megas XLR is a mecha Monster of the Week cartoon created by Chris Prynoski and George Krstic, two of the minds behind MTV's Downtown, that takes mecha anime tropes and crosses them with "guy culture" and The '80s to make an affectionate spoof of both.In the distant future, mankind finds itself losing a war against a race of aliens known as the Glorft. Only one hope remains: a stolen Glorft battle robot prototype, converted into the Mechanized Earth Guard Attack System (MEGAS). Humanity knows it can't stop the Glorft now, so it decides to send MEGAS into the past to turn the tide of the war — but a mistake accidentally sends the mecha too far into the past. MEGAS sits in a junkyard in Jersey City for seventy years — until a large, jovial gearhead and video game fanatic by the name of Coop unearths it.Coop repairs the robot, but he also makes a few modifications — such as replacing the mecha's absent, destroyed head with a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda, and operating the mech's systems with various video game controls. He dubs it XLR — "Xtra Large Robot" — but as he shows it off to his friend Jamie, Kiva Andru, a mech pilot who's traveled from the future, shows up to reclaim the robot she modified in the first place. Coop's modifications, however, have made him the only person who can pilot MEGAS, and a band of Glorft troopers, led by the tyrannical Warmaster Gorrath, followed her through time to take MEGAS back for themselves. Coop, Kiva, and — to a lesser extent — Jamie find themselves thrust into battle the Glorft, along with countless other threats to the Earth; too bad they usually do just as much damage to the Earth as the threats themselves. The show, originally entitled Lowbrow, began life as a pilot episode that was shown in Cartoon Network's 2002 Weekend Summerfest to determine a new Cartoon Cartoon, where it ended up the most popular one. The pilot episode was also shown during Toonami's Giant Robot Week, and the show itself premiered on Toonami.Unfortunately, Megas XLR suffered the fate of being written off by Cartoon Network, meaning that it can no longer be aired legally on Cartoon Network, [adult swim], or any of their affiliates; George Krstic said in 2014 that the show cannot be aired again without getting into legal problems. Fortunately, George Krstic, Chris Prynoski, and the Toonami crew worked to bring it back, and on February 8, 2019, Krstic stated that Warner Bros owns the rights to the show now. While it's too early to tell what it could mean for the show's future, at the very least, the show is finally in proper legal hands — it can be found on Apple iTunes and Xbox Live, and HBO Max in Latin America.Much of Megas' production team went on to create the Disney XD series Motorcity, which features very similar spoofing of '80s culture and aesthetics.Do not confuse this show with The Megas.

In the first Season Finale, Coop revealed that the car has 10 cylinders. When cornered by the Glorft, Jamie snarkily says: "Maybe you should've put in 12 cylinders.". Ominous Latin Chanting: Parodied with the REGIS Mk.5. The score breaks into ominous Latin chanting as his Leitmotif (and clearly based on O Fortuna), then immediately cuts out as soon as the camera changes to focus on something else, only to resume whenever he's on-screen again. Crossover Cameo: Several characters from MTV's Downtown show up throughout the show. Goat is an obvious one that he becomes a transplanted recurring character. Alex makes an appearance in two separate episodes (and even appears twice in the second episode, on both sides of two teams competing against each other in a robot battle *somehow*). The nerd Wedge appears at least once. Serena is in the pilot episode "Lowbrow". The girl Jamie gets a date with by borrowing Coop's car appears to be the same girl Fruity was flirting with on the subway.

comment
Actor Allusion: Wendee Lee voiced a redheaded pilot of a Gundam that would lose its head in battle in Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, rather similar to Kiva and Megas in the first episode. One of the villains is voiced by Bruce Campbell. He gets a robot that wields a chainsaw and a shotgun. And it's pretty much giant mecha Elvis. He also refers to human beings, "Earthers", as they're known, as a "primitive, backwater species." Also, in the episode with the planet of sentient robots, the two that get the most screen time are voiced by Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. Interestingly, they both have essentially swapped melee weapons from Optimus and Megatron: the robot voiced by Peter Cullen has an orange mace and the one voiced by Frank Welker has a variety of axe-like weapons, counter to Optimus's energon axe and Megatron's energon mace. Furthermore, the Cullen-bot doesn't have a human-like mouth, and heavily resembles the titular robot from Mazinger Z, while Welker-bot had the face fully visible, but with a large helmet- similar to what Optimus Prime and Megatron had in the original cartoon. In the finale, Alternate!Jamie has a much deeper voice than his normal counterpart - a voice fans will recognize as Spike Spiegel or Roger Smith. Jax, the unintelligible member of G-Force homage S-Force, is voiced by Alan Young, who also voiced the similarly unintelligible Keyop in Battle of the Planets. Ronnie Schell, who voiced Jason in series as well, voices "Sloane," The Lancer in S-Force. Scott Innes, who for a while did the voices of Shaggy and Scooby Doo, channels Casey Kasem again to voice Argo, the S-Force leader.

Surprisingly Realistic Outcome
 Megas XLR / int_3ed23024
comment
Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: In "Battle Royale", Jamie is holding on for his life over a quantum singularity, with Kiva hanging by his legs. Naturally, Jamie's a wimp. When Kiva tells him he won't find the planet of the Space Amazons if he drops her, he seems to suddenly have the strength to pull her up, only to wimp out shortly after. Kiva simply climbs him afterward and pulls him up. In "The Bad Guy", Coop's Destructive Savior habits get him the attention of a group of alien heroes, who think he is a villain endangering Earth. When your heroics leave a lot of destruction in its wake, not everyone's going to see you as the good guy. Subverted in the same episode, when Coop tries to give some extra power to Megas by combining with the S-Force's Zorps. While Coop's plan does work (to Kiva's surprise), the S-Force's machines were not designed to combine with Megas, which translates to Coop violently shoving Megas's limbs into the Zorps' rears like gloves and boots. This also results in the Zorps getting completely wrecked, their pilots humiliated, and adding so much extra weight that it initially causes Megas to fall over. In "The Fat And The Furious", Coop is forced to operate Megas via manual controls (inspired by an Expy of DDR) to fight off the Glorft while Kiva repairs Megas's computer core. While Coop is pretty strong for a man with his build, he's spent most of his life eating food and playing video games in his mother's basement, meaning that his stamina is rather lacking due to a lack of physical training. As a result, he soon tires himself out within minutes.

Acrofatic: Hilariously subverted with Coop. He can move when the time calls for it but his rather large gut makes it hard. A notable example would be in one episode when Coop tried jumping into the window of Megas and got stuck. Or jumping into a car Kiva was driving in "The Fat and the Furious". Another would be when he launched himself off of the stage at a rock concert; no one caught him. Averted in "DMV" where he needed to run to the Impound Lot to get MEGAS while Kiva and the Bounty Hunter fight. He is completely winded and exhausted when he gets to the lot despite the fact that you can still clearly see Kiva and the Bounty Hunter fighting from their location. Another one where he is running away from the Glorft because the CPU is out, Coop ends up adding how he had to "run half a block" in his Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking speech later. Another episode showed that the Megas could be controlled using a pair of NES Track Pads and Power Gloves with a DanceDanceRevolution style interface. He does well for a while, until he gets tired (it doesn't take long).

Downer Ending: Some episodes end on an unpleasant note, such as "Breakout" (where the remaining alien prisoners freed from the containment device start terrorizing a nearby town), "Bad Guy" (where Coop's bad habits rub off on the S Force and Targon declares the team "ruined"), and "Ultra Chicks" (where Kurdock is revealed to survive falling in the volcano and prepares to attack the Ultra Cadets' now vulnerable home). These are all Played for Laughs of course. Though the ending credit scene to "Ultra Chicks" shows one of the Ultra-Cadets hanging out with Goat while watching a movie. Which implies that they solved the issue of their planet being destroyed by an unstoppable monster, or like many stingers in the show, it's just supposed to be silly and not be taken seriously (if even canon).

Parodied during Coop's battle with REGIS. He laments that their battle has destroyed every Mega-Slush machine in the city (going to Hoboken was completely unacceptable), when getting a Mega-Slush was his goal for the entire episode. Note that they also destroyed the city itself, and that didn't bother Coop. (Lucky for Coop, he found a working Mega-Slush machine in a pile of debris after defeating the robot for good.)

Achievements in Ignorance: Coop manages to make it through his battles in spite of being dim. He's even proud of it. Also, in the second episode, Jamie managed to find the Planet of the Space Amazons, which, up until then, was thought to only exist in a comic book. Coop also found a food court there. In S-Force SOS, this is used twice. First, to explain how Coop was able to punch his way out of the Infiniti-sector, a prison pocket dimension, and how the S-Force were able to survive a missile barrage launched by Coop accidentally. In TV Dinner, Coop destroys a planet-sized space monster by exploding it thanks to pop-rocks and soda. The resulting explosion sends debris of the deceased alien into the Glorft mothership just as it exits null-space and destroys its brand new planet-destroying cannon before it can be fired. All this done without any of the heroes knowing anything about the Glorft's plans.

Deconstructive Parody: Breaking down a whole lot of Humongous Mecha tropes? Check. Funny as heck? Double-check. Affectionate Parody: The writers clearly enjoy the series they're parodying. Reconstruction: Arguably, the last episodes of the the second season are this. Despite Coop often destroying planets and civilizations by accident, an alternate reality shows how the universe would be if Coop became more ambitious. AU evil Coop not only scours the Earth of all countries,* though the neighborhood where he previously lived is mostly intact, including Megas's garage he more or less conquers the Galaxy and continues his conquest in alternate universes. Averted in "Clockwork Megas", where Coop frees "innocent robots" from being brainwashed in a prison. Unfortunately, said prisoners happened to be the universe's most dangerous criminals. So apparently he can respect sentient robots, but his Idiot Heroness among other things always gets the best of him. That one wasn't entirely Coop's fault. Quarrol (the warden) kept attacking MEGAS, had his guard machines kill seemingly innocent robots who were going to tell Coop how to get home, and generally acted like a bad guy. Until the end, even the audience didn't know that the robots were criminals and that Quarrol was a good guy. If he'd taken the time to explain the situation to heroes, instead of trying to have them ground into shavings, and given them directions back to Earth, Coop would have likely sided with him.

Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Coop is the undisputed master. It seems that nearly every single threat he faces was directly or indirectly his fault in the first place. And even when it's not his fault at all, his actions to resolve the problem generally cause more devastation than letting it rampage unchecked would have done. According to Word of God, had the show continued it would have been revealed that this even extends to creating the Glorft. This quote in the first season sums it up nicely:

Oh, and he did all three of the acts, not the bad guy. Lampshaded by Kiva and Jamie. Inverted in "Terminate Her" wherein Coop actually lists the offenses in order of ascending severity, before elements of the Glorft plan utterly confuse him and he trails off. I Know Mortal Kombat: Coop learned his incredible piloting skills from playing too many video games. Justified because he designed the controls of the robot to simulate a video game, complete with Nintendo, Sega and Sony controller pads. As well as a DDR pad and a pair of Power Gloves for "manual control" when the CPU unit isn't attached. There's also the "secondary cammand bridge" (sic) with retro Atari controllers, in case the car isn't attached.

Cool Car: It's a car mixed with a Humongous Mecha. Coop is entirely aware of this, and Jamie even more so. When Coop enters Megas in a car show, he's actually worried about the competition. Hilariously, he still loses to Kiva who wins the award for being a better engineer and repair jockey. Assuming it really is a 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda convertible with a 426 Hemi and manual transmission...Coop somehow got his hands on an absurdly rare car (as in, extant models can be counted on one hand) and turned it into the head of a giant robot. Muscle car enthusiasts would regard that as nearly as much of a travesty as Kiva. Coop probably found it in Goat's junk pile. "Two bucks!" In the first Season Finale, Coop revealed that the car has 10 cylinders. When cornered by the Glorft, Jamie snarkily says: "Maybe you should've put in 12 cylinders.". Turns into a Call-Back when in the first episode of Season 2, Coop lists "adding another pair of cylinders" as one of his upgrades, though whether its for the car or the mech is not specified.

Leader Forms the Head: As expected, the show parodies this. The Glorft's UMD is a combining mecha made from other combining mecha, repeated for a couple of cycles. At its final stage, It is completed by Gorrath's personal mech docking in the center. Without Gorrath's part, it doesn't seem to be useable at all, enforced when he leaves the battlefield, and the dozens to hundreds of mechs and pilots that also made up the UMD. Gorrath having a Never My Fault mentality, all of this to be expected.

What Measure Is a Non-Human?
 Megas XLR / int_9c45b5a2
comment
What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Coop ignites a planet of sentient robots and it explodes. Not before he slaughtered a couple dozen of them himself, though.

Pyrrhic Victory: Coop argues with a fellow gamer over who is the bigger gaming expert. As the latter rattles off games which Coop has mastered, he finally gets one over on Coop by naming Love Them Lerps, a mashup of the Care Bears and the Smurfs. Jaime gets one back on the gamer by pointing out that he's just admitted to liking a child's game.

Take That!: Once an Episode, something belonging to their MTV pastiche, PoPTV, gets destroyed. Do you think the creators are still bitter about the cancellation of Downtown?note In one episode, despite the expected PoPTV destruction, something with the MTV logo appears in a scene of high-octane action...and survives. One of the buildings Coop has destroyed was marked "A Dot Com (And Therefore Obviously Empty)".note The ball just bounces all around inside the building and leaves, and then, crushes to bits the building next to it. Yes, a PoPTV building. The B-story of "DMV: Department of Megas Violations" is, as you can probably guess, an extended one at the expense of the Department of Motor Vehicles. In "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Coop", Megas lands on the Moon so that Coop can amuse a bored Skippy (his pesky, overweight cousin)—and crushes the Apollo XI parked there. Coop tells Jamie how they 'always thought' they rigged the lunar landing thing, a reference to conspiracy theorists who thought NASA's moon landing was a hoax. In "Thanksgiving Throwdown", the parade has balloons for different characters, including the Fabio Brothers, all of whom Coop and Jamie like. Then comes a balloon of Auggie the Adorable Aardvark, for whom both of them voice their hatred. They don't seem too gentle with the adorable aardvark. The game Love them Lerps from "Breakout" is a less-than-affectionate mashup of the Smurfs and the Care Bears. Children's programming and games often get hit- shown as cheery, sugar-coated, heart-shaped and so sweet it's disgusting. This is occassionally done to cities in New Jersey, such as in "All I Wanted was a Slushie...". "The Return" has Coop dread that losing his membership to Vid Hunt means he'll have to rent videos at Mega Blockers, a not-so-subtle jab at the Megaflicks and Blockbuster video rental chains. Berserk Button: Coop not getting a Mega Slush or any delicious, artery-hardening food. Gorrath actually uses this to torture him at one point. Also, don't even think of insulting Megas in front of Coop. Or trying to kill Jamie and Coop in front of Kiva. Insulting Kiva because she's a girl always seems to make her more serious. She even beat Coop in a videogame when he gave her the "girl handicap". Jamie will drive off a parking garage to reconnect the car to Megas for Coop, because "No one treats my friend like that-except for me". Do NOT try to ruin Jamie's date. Basically there's one in every episode, which causes Coop (or someone else if the formula is subverted) to give his angry speech of the day before whupping the bad guy.

Non-Standard Character Design: The REGIS Mk. V has a more spindly, cartoonish, non-mech design, looking more like something out of Invader Zim. Warmaster Gorrath. While the rest of the Glorft that we see resemble slugs with non-visible mouths, he is almost never seen outside of bipedal power armor and his mouth (and several sharp teeth) are always visible. Subverted in "Battle Royale" where, in attempt to get Jamie to climb a pillar, Kiva tells him that if he doesn't, he'll never find the Planet Of The Space Amazons. Jamie then gets a determined gaze while dramatic music swells, only to stop trying to climb and whine about how he still can't do it. They ended up on said planet by the end of the episode anyway.

Despite his Destructive Savior nature, Coop is protecting the galaxy by being a lazy slob. He also dedicates himself to stop the tyrant's rampage doing more good than harm for once.

No Endor Holocaust: Thoroughly abused and played with. One day, Coop fills New Jersey's air with smog to disable a solar-powered robot while triggering an artificial winter, and next thing you know, New Jersey is good as new. Later, the Science Ninja Team Gatchaman-like heroes show up to punish Coop for being the Ultimate Destructor of the Earth. The artificial winter is explained though. The two aliens that lost the REGIS had to clean up the robot bits. They said that the pollution is just smog and will be cleansed from the atmosphere in a month. Worse cause scenario: a few hurricanes and month of winter and driving accidents. Nothing apocalyptic. Totally averted when Coop blows up a good chunk of the Moon, causing lots of natural disasters and leading to him having to reconstruct it during the credits. Partially averted with the planet of the space-yetis. Though none of them died, Coop's destruction of their rival planet completely screwed up their ecosystem.

Brick Joke: Occurs very, very often — almost Once an Episode. In the pilot, for example, Coop launches a missile which flies up instead of straight, striking a PoPTV satellite... to finally crash atop the ridiculously huge final robot right on time to save the cast. In the second episode, Jamie asks about the planet of the Space Amazons (based on the comic he's reading) and Coop asks if it has a food court. The end-of-episode panning still shot shows them at the food court on the Space Amazon planet - Coop eating, Jamie annoying a bunch of women. In the episode "Breakout", we heard about the Lerps, a Smurfs/Care Bears parody- and we see the game towards the end of the episode, with Grrkek the Planet Killer trapped in it. In the credits of the final episode of the series (Rearview Mirror, Mirror: Part 2), we see a clip from the game again, only for Evil Coop and Evil Kiva, who are trapped between dimensions, to appear in the game.
